THE MISSION TO SEAFARERS: NOR-SHIPPING FUN RUN 2015

The Mission to Seafarers: Providing a Vital Lifeline to Crews in Need The Mission to Seafarers (MtS) is the world’s leading maritime welfare charity and we are delighted to be the chosen charity for Nor-Shipping in 2015. To celebrate our strategic partnership, we are organising the Nor-Shipping Fun Run, a new charity 5km run around Oslo city centre, on Monday 1 June 2015, with Nor-Shipping and our media partners Lloyd’s List. This new and exciting challenge will see 500 runners taking on the course to raise an estimated £85,000 to help support seafarers and their families in times of crisis. We are seeking ‘seed funding’ from the maritime, finance, insurance and banking industries, to cover the costs of the run; and further sponsorship to ensure that this great sporting event will make a real impact on the lives of seafarers everywhere. We are entirely funded by voluntary donations. We do hope you will help us. Best wishes

Martin Sandford, Executive Director, The Mission to Seafarers

Nor-Shipping Fun Run The industry all rely on the work of seafarers, we thrive and prosper in world trade based on their hard work, drive and energy. At Lloyd’s List we have supported the Mission for many years and recognise the charity as an important aspect of the industry, offering a vital support network for seafarers around the world. 2015 is the 50th anniversary of Nor-Shipping and we want to make a mark with something extra special; bringing people together in Oslo city centre to help seafarers whilst creating a buzz around the much loved and well-attended show piece for the shipping industry. I first dreamt up this event a few years ago while running through the city in the summer months, and thought it would be a great way to have some fun during Nor-Shipping whilst raising money for a good cause. We are delighted to partner with the Mission for the Nor-Shipping Fun Run and we encourage others to do so. There are many ways in which you can work with us to support this event through corporate branding opportunities and of course by donning your running shoes on the day. With global media exposure a partnership with the Nor-Shipping Fun Run will engage stakeholders and set you apart from the competition – do come and join us. Thank you. “Seafarers are so often forgotten, at times they are neglected and, in some parts of the world, those who spend their lives at sea continue to suffer abuse and exposure to danger. Thank you to all in the industry for supporting us” Revd Andrew Wright, Secretary General, The Mission to Seafarers

The Mission to Seafarers: Who We Are and What We Do n T he Mission to Seafarers has been in operation for nearly 160 years in the world’s

most inhospitable ports. HM The Queen is our patron and our president is HRH The Princess Royal n O ur vision is to strive to improve and safeguard the wellbeing of the world’s 1.5 million men and women who crew the world’s fleet, regardless of their rank, nationality or belief n L ife at sea remains hazardous, lonely and forbidding; yet the seafarers who bring us over 90% of the essential goods we use every day are often overlooked and forgotten n P iracy, shipwreck, danger and suicide are the seafarer’s constant companions. Particularly in the most remote ports, suffering, abandonment and the physical and mental abuse of sailors are commonplace. But help is at hand n T hrough The Mission to Seafarers’ teams of port-based professional maritime chaplains and volunteer ship-visitors, we offer a place of sanctuary and real support ashore to those in distress Our Services Include: n S eafarers’ centres: we have centres in 121 ports, offering refreshments,

communication facilities and welfare staff

n T ransport: many ports are located in industrial areas miles from towns, shops

and amenities. We provide transport so that seafarers can make the most of their brief time ashore n E mergency support: in cases of pirate attack, shipwreck, abandonment, serious injury or bereavement, the Mission is on hand to offer assistance n S hip-visiting: to provide a friendly welcome and offer help, support and advice n P ost-trauma care and counselling: staff in ports are trained to recognise and respond to signs of post-traumatic stress disorder or distress. In the aftermath of pirate attacks, shipwreck, industrial or personal crisis we offer a caring response. n A dvocacy and justice: we work to uphold seafarers’ rights and are in constant dialogue with the shipping industry, international governments and regulatory bodies

Nor-Shipping and The Mission to Seafarers in Partnership Nor-Shipping, one of the world’s leading maritime events, and The Mission to Seafarers have signed a partnership agreement, to raise vital funds for seafarers in need and their families worldwide. Nor-Shipping attracts the international maritime industry to Norway every other year, with their top-quality exhibition, high-level conferences and prime networking opportunities. 2015 will see their 50th birthday celebrations and The Mission to Seafarers will be involved with joint activities to mark that historic moment and share in their success for the benefit of seafarers.

“It is natural for Nor-Shipping to partner with The Mission to Seafarers. Highlighting the help this organisation provides to seafarers does not just show that we take our social responsibility seriously – it also shows that we recognise the invaluable contribution seafarers make to the industry. Without them, it wouldn’t exist! We look forward to a productive cooperation” Vidar Pederstad, Nor-Shipping Director
