ALBUM NEWS: Fans who follow Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie Daniels online may have noticed what appears to be a serious infestation of boll weevil bugs on his social media accounts and website. As it turns out, those critters aren’t boll weevils at all. They’re actually, “Beau Weevils,” and are a nod to Daniels’ upcoming studio album, Beau Weevils - Songs in the Key of E, released on October 26. The new ten-track album features lead vocals, guitar and fiddle by Daniels, James Stroud on drums and percussion, Billy Crain on guitar, and Charlie Hayward on bass. “Beau Weevils - Songs in the Key of E is the culmination of a long held desire of James Stroud and myself to do a project together,” says Daniels. “We had worked together, with James in the capacity of producer, which had resulted in some of our most successful albums for The Charlie Daniels Band, but James is one of the finest and most soulful drummers in the business and I figured we could get together, musician to musician, and come up with something special. We just needed a vehicle in the form of songs that would fit the bill.” Daniels describes the new recordings as “Downhome, Swampy Rock meets Funk with a little taste of ‘Delta’ type of style.” Details at charliedaniels.com..
Tom Mackell hails from Philadelphia and debuts a unique sound resembling a cross between outlaw country and Americana. The Nashville based singer/songwriter has released his latest single “Hannah” - the first single from a forthcoming E.P. slated for early 2019. Fusing elements of classic Americana and outlaw country revival with youthful sincerity, “Hannah” explores an old country adage through the lens of a millennial songwriter. Despite the challenges that inspired the song, Mackell has managed to turn 2018 into a banner year musically, crafting a new album on which “Hannah” will appear, in addition to touring with 90’s stalwart Sister Hazel and securing forthcoming dates with “The Voice” alum Tony Lucca. Published by Thomas Nelson and available now. “I have leaned heavily on my personal journey and the times I’ve knocked my head against various walls through the years while learning life’s lessons,” Daniels said. “I’ve excerpted segments of my highest and lowest times, my most devastating defeats and most rewarding victories, and how I’ve come to truly value making the day count, every single day.” More at charliedaniels.com.

Steve Cropper Receives BMI Icon Award at the 2018 BMI Country Awards Broadcast Music, Inc.®, (BMI®), the global leader in music rights management, presented its 2018 BMI Country Awards, honoring the prolific musical career of BMI Icon Award recipient Steve Cropper, as well as the Country Songwriter, Song and Publisher of the Year. The 66th annual event, which is the genre’s oldest awards ceremony, also celebrated the songwriters and publishers of the mostperformed country songs of the past year. BMI President and CEO Mike O’Neill hosted the ceremony at the Company’s office in Nashville, along with Jody Williams, BMI Vice President, Creative, Nashville. Cropper, who was named this year’s BMI Icon Award honoree, joins an elite list of songwriters including Mac Davis, Dolly Parton, Bob DiPiero, Vince Gill, Hank Williams, Jr., Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson, and others who have distinctly and profoundly influenced the music industry. During the evening, heavy-hitter John Legend, CMA New Artist of the Year nominee Luke Combs, up-and-comer Maggie Rose, and Lucie Silvas with blues musician Mike Farris and guitarist Kenny Greenberg paid musical tribute to Cropper. Silvas, Farris, and Greenberg together gave a rocking mashup of “Soul Man” and “Hold On, I’m Comin’,” honoring both Cropper’s extraordinary guitar prowess and his musical contribution to the American classics. Maggie Rose gave a powerful performance of “In the Midnight Hour,” followed by Luke Combs’ rendition of “Knock on Wood.” Finally, Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter John Legend brought the house down with “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.” In addition to Cropper’s Icon Award, Jesse Frasure was named 2018’s Country Songwriter of the Year. His writing credits include five of the most-performed songs of the past year, including Thomas Rhett’s “Marry Me” and “Unforgettable,” Easton Corbin’s “A Girl Like You,” Old Dominion’s “No Such Thing as a Broken Heart,” and LOCASH’s “Ring on Every Finger.” The coveted Song of the Year award was given to “In Case You Didn’t Know,” written by Tyler Reeve and Trent Tomlinson. Published by Big Mosquito Music, Big Spaces Music, Brown Hound Publishing, Kirbfinder’s Mucho Love Music, and Smack of Ham Songs, the Brett Young track was the most-performed country song of the year. Taking home the Publisher of the Year accolade was Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Group, which is responsible for 20 of the 50 most-performed songs of the year including megahits “Meant to Be” by Bebe Rexha featuring Florida Georgia Line, “When It Rains It Pours” and “Hurricane” by Luke Combs. The Group also publishes Keith Urban’s “The Fighter,” and “I Could Use A Love Song” by Maren Morris. During the ceremony, BMI as well saluted the songwriters and publishers of the 50 most-performed country songs of the previous year.

2018 Ascap Country Music Awards The 56th annual awards marked a tremendous occasion in Nashville as songwriters for the country music genre were honored with a special awards ceremony. Held at the Renaissance hotel in downtown, the night celebrated ASCAP songwriters and the works they’d created over the last year. Among the artists in attendance to celebrate this year’s songwriting was Cassadee Pope, who knows full well that it means to create music with meaning and praised those who do it so effortlessly. “We all lean on songwriting and music, in general, so much,” she shared. I just know for me over the past year, it has been essential that I write and get things out and off my chest, so to celebrate people here that are amazing and excel at that is really, really special.” Country and Americana singer-songwriter Lee Ann Womack was honored in song before receiving the ASCAP Golden Note Award, presented by ASCAP President and Chairman Paul Williams along with Big Machine recording artist Carly Pearce. Chris Stapleton performed “Either Way,” a song he co-wrote that Womack first recorded, Buddy Miller turned in his rendition of “Don’t Tell Me,” and Alison Krauss with writer Tony Lane delivered a gorgeous version of “A Little Past Little Rock.” Hit songwriter Ashley Gorley took home ASCAP Country Music Songwriter of the Year for the fifth consecutive year and sixth time in his career, making him the first songwriter ever to earn the award six times. As previously announced, Brett Young was celebrated with the ASCAP Songwriter-Artist of the Year Award. Sam Hunt, along with songwriters Zach Crowell and Josh Osborne, performed “Body Like a Back Road,” which was named Song of the Year. The star-studded audience enjoyed performances of some of ASCAP’s top country songs of the year, including “What Ifs” by special guest performer Trace Adkins, and “Small Town Boy” by ASCAP songwriter Ben Hayslip along with recording artist Dustin Lynch and co-writers Rhett Akins and Kyle Fishman. We presented ASCAP Publisher of the Year Award to Warner/ Chappell Music Publishing for publishing 19 of the most-performed ASCAP country songs of the year. Big Machine Records trio The Cadillac Three opened the show with their forthcoming single, “Hard Out Here (for a Country Boy).”

52nd Annual CMA awards
Then a quick segue into “Life Changes” performed by Thomas Rhett with the Ravenwood High School Marching Band. All the award attendees were on their feet. Dan + Shay then performed “Tequila.” The harmonies and sound were spot on -- they truly are a powerhouse duo. Carly Pearce, Jimmie Allen and Dustin Lynch presented the award for Single of the Year to Chris Stapleton for “Broken Halos.” He said the song was written about those that had gone before their time and he dedicated the award to those who lost their lives in California.
Annual 52nd CMA Awards, started off with a moment of silence lead by Garth Brooks for those lost in Thousand Oaks California followed by a uplifting rendition of “What Makes You Country” by Luke Bryan and then joined by Ashly McBryde, Cole Swindell, Luke combs, and more. Brad and Carrie’s opening this year did not disappoint - especially with their spoof on A Star is Born with A Star is Bored. And then the puns continued, with talk about Carrie’s pregnancy with the baby boy announcement and a funny yodeling tune with Mason Ramsey aka “Little Hank.” They touched on all the new artist bars in Nashville and joked about Brad’s Whiskey Lullaby Bar and Day Care Center. We even got to watch Luke Bryan floss which we are sure has already been turned into a meme.
The first award of the night was presented by Lady A for Song of the Year, which went to Chris Stapleton for “Broken Halos” written with Mike Henderson. Jason Aldean and Miranda Lambert performed “Drowns the Whiskey,” leaving us no doubts about this being a live show -- the finish was powerful though. MacKenzie Foy and Noah Schnapp presented New Artist of the Year to Luke Combs. “God, I love Country music man,” Luke Combs said at the end of his award speech. NashvilleMusicGuide.com 38
To honor Dottie West at the awards Lauren Alaina sang the chorus for Dotty’s hit “Lesson in Leavin.” Kelsea Ballerini then performed her latest hit “Miss Me More.” The choreograph was professionally fierce as was her voice. Following, was Old Dominion performing “Hotel Key” and then Carrie Underwood performed “Love Wins.” Kane Brown and Olivia Culpo presented Vocal Group of the Year award to Old Dominion. They were honored to accept the award and spoke about how much they had to be grateful for. Brett Young performed a smooth acoustic rendition of his song “Mercy.” Brett then thanked Country radio for making “Mercy” his 4th consecutive No. 1 radio single.
Ricky Skaggs and his band then performed “Black Eyed Suzie.” Talk about some amazing picking! Then he was joined by Keith Urban on “Highway 40 Blues.” And if that wasn’t enough out came Brad Paisley, Sierra Hull, and Marty Stewart to join Ricky for “Country Boy.” It was a perfect collaboration tribute. Ricky Skaggs is the newest member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. After a short commercial break, the awards returned with a performance of “Eastbound and Down” by Midland. The song was originally recorded by Jerry Reed for Smokey and the Bandit so it was quite fitting that clips from it were played in the background.
Little Big Town then presented the award for Album of the Year to Kacey Musgraves for Golden Hour with Producers Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian. Kacey moved to Nashville ten years ago today and this award couldn’t have been a better way for her to celebrate. FGL then performed “Meant to Be” with Bebe Rexha which was nominated for Musical Event of the Year. Luke Combs then performed “She Got the Best of Me.” Following was Keith Urban performing “Never Comin Down.” Garth Brooks debuted “Stronger Than Me” for the first time
Male Vocalist of the Year to Chris Stapleton. “I’m real proud of this award and try to be a good singer. But I want to thank my kids for putting up with me and sharing me with all these people. I want to thank my wife for being my rock,” says Stapleton. “There’s so many people to thank that there is not enough time on this show.” Kacey Musgraves followed with “Slow Burn” off of her album Golden Hour, which won Album of the Year. Then Eric Church performed his latest album title track “Desperate Man.” Dennis Quaid and Trisha Yearwood presented the award for Female Vocalist of the Year to Carrie Underwood. This was Carrie’s fifth win for Female Vocalist of the Year. “Thank you God. I have been blessed with so much in my life. Thank you family. Thank you Country music. Thank you Country music family. It’s all about family around here.” says Carrie, “This means so much.” Lionel Richie presented the award for Entertainer of the Year to Keith Urban.
to the world during the CMA Awards. The song was written for his wife Trisha Yearwood. It was Garth and his guitar under a spotlight. It was beautiful and Garth made it through without crying - which he admitted was his biggest worry before the show. But I am sure their wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Sharna Burgess and Bobby Bones presented the award for Vocal Duo of the Year to Brothers Osborne. This is the third time they have won Vocal Duo of the Year and they gave a shout out to Dan + Shay who were fellow nominees in this category. Pistol Annies then performed “Got My Name Changed Back” from their latest album Interstate Gospel and washboards were included. Pistol Annies consists of Miranda Lambert, Angaleena Presley and Ashley Monroe. Dierks Bentley and Brothers Osborne performed “Burning Man” in a ring of fire, literally. There was a ring fire on the stage floor surrounding them. Great use of pyrotechnics for imagery. Rita Wilson then welcomed Maren Morris, Mavis Staples, Marty Stewart, and Chris Stapleton to the stage to perform “Friendship” and “I’ll Take You There.” What a spiritual experience and amazing collaboration. After a brief commercial break, Brad Paisley performed “Bucked Off.” Martina McBride and Lara Spencer presented
“Thank you so much. I am shocked beyond shocked. I have the most amazing team in the world. So many people to thank. The fans, Country radio... everyone. God I thank you so much and I wish my dad was alive to see this but I am sure he is watching me up there,” says Urban. “God Bless Country music and God bless all of you.” CMA Award winners: Song of the Year: “Broken Halos” - Chris Stapleton & Mike Henderson New Artist of the Year: Luke Combs Single of the Year: “Broken Halos” - Chris Stapleton Vocal Group of the Year: Old Dominion Album of the Year: Golden Hour: Kacey Musgraves Music Video of the Year: “Marry Me,” Thomas Rhett Musical Event of the Year: “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” David Lee Murphy with Kenny Chesney Musician of the Year: Mac McAnally, guitar Vocal Duo of the Year: Brothers Osborne Male Vocalist of the Year: Chris Stapleton Female Vocalist of the Year: Carrie Underwood Entertainer of the Year: Keith Urban

features the full recordings from the two ‘Stand Up’ Shows. You can see Elvis in his element here. He has rediscovered the magic electricity that first thrilled audiences during his early appearances on the Louisiana Hayride but now he has the experience and self-confidence that was absent in the nineteen-year-old Elvis. As Elvis finishes ‘All shook Up’ to rapturous applause, he says, “It’s been a long time, baby.” This was his first live performance since 1961 and he makes the most of it. It’s obvious that he’s enjoying every minute and knows that he needs a live audience, not a movie camera, to shine as an entertainer.
Still the King: Elvis at his best ‘Elvis: ’68 Comeback Special: 50th Anniversary Edition’ 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of one of the most iconic events in the history of rock and pop music. The television event originally titled simply ‘Elvis’ soon became known as the ’68 Comeback Special.’ To mark the anniversary, Legacy Recordings/ Sony Music has released ‘Elvis: ’68 Comeback Special: 50th Anniversary Edition.’ This 50th Anniversary Edition is much more than simply a re-release of the original taped TV show. It’s a 7-disc box set that includes the NBCTV show, ‘Elvis,’ along with enough extra goodies to keep any Presley fan enthralled for days. A total of seven discs includes 2 newly mastered Bluray discs with all-known recordings and rehearsals from the RCA vaults and
NBC’s videotapes, plus never-before released interviews and out-takes. It seems hard to believe now, but by early 1968, Elvis was depressed about the way his career seemed have plateaued. Critics and fans felt the same way: since January 1967, only two of his eight single releases had charted and didn’t even crack Billboard’s top twenty. He was churning out movie after movie with ever-weaker storylines and largely forgettable soundtracks. (The soundtrack album linked to the 1968 movie Speedway stalled at number 82 on Billboard’s album charts.) Elvis’ frustration can be felt during one point during the ‘Sit Down’ Show. Sitting in the round with musicians that include his old buddies guitarist Scotty Moore and drummer D.J. Fontana, surrounded by a small audience, Elvis stops a song to demonstrate his famous ‘lip curl.’ “You remember that don’t you?” he says with a resigned smile. “I got news for you baby. I did 29 pictures like that.”
It’s worth noting that the video and audio quality is superb throughout and it is easy to forget that you’re watching a production from fifty years ago. The song selection is unbeatable with live performances of his biggest hits, some of his favorite Gospel songs – that’s Darlene Love behind him – and just a couple of Christmas songs because the original show aired on December 3, 1968. (We can be thankful that Elvis and the show’s producer resisted manager Colonel Tom Parker’s original plan to make it simply an hour of Christmas tunes.) The TV show put Elvis back in the spotlight and revived his career. ‘If I Can Dream,’ a song written specifically for the show, reached number 12 and the show’s soundtrack album made it to the album charts’ top ten. Elvis was back doing what he did best and had never looked or sounded better. ‘Elvis: ’68 Comeback Special: 50th Anniversary Edition’ is not just another re-tread or a musical curiosity. It is a superb production that shows why Elvis Presley was – and still is – one of music’s finest and most original performers. Now we can see him and hear him at his best. The box set will ship on November 29, 2018. It is available at Amazon, WalMart, Target and all retail music outlets. Review by Preshias Harris
In addition to two ‘Sit Down’ Show recordings, the Anniversary Edition
