HAJRA SHAFI/ GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY PERSONAL PROJECT: ABSTRACT NATURE
UNDERSTANDING ABSTRACTION Abstract photography, sometimes called non-objective, experimental or conceptual photography, is a means of depicting a visual image that does not have an immediate association with the object world and that has been created through the use of photographic equipment, processes or materials.
UNDERSTANDING 4 ELEMENTS AND 2 PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN Line: A line in a photo is a point that moves, leading towards something. Some lines are obvious, and some are implied. The viewer's eyes are naturally drawn along lines. This can be vertical lines, parallel lines, curved lines, diagonal lines, and even strong horizontal lines.
Shape: Almost every photograph contains one or more shapes, but great photographs are those where the photographer has used shape in a unique or interesting way. Shape is concerned only with the two dimensional qualities of an object. POWERED BY https://hajragcsephotographypghs.weebly.com/abstract-nature.html

Colour: The appropriate use of colour in photography adds a dynamic element to your images that is very pleasing to the eye. The correct use of it will allow you to create photographs to be proud of. Bold colours and bright composition in your photos result in images that sell.
Texture: When talking about photography texture refers to the visual quality of the surface of an object, revealed through variances in shape, tone and colour depth. Capturing high levels of detail is extremely important when attempting to capture lifelike textures making exposure choices critical.
Space: The rule of space in photography is simply the act of adding visual space in front of the direction that an object is moving, looking or pointing to imply motion and direction and to lead the eye of the viewer. This rule tells where to place the visual space, or in other words, where to place our subject in the image.

Form: Form refers to when shape takes on three dimensions. Form is created by shadows and highlights on an object in the photograph. You can see in these two photos how shape becomes form when light hits the subject. But, when they come to the surface, the light creates shadows and highlights, giving them form.
INVESTIGATION OF ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN For your homework task, list all 7 elements of Art & the 7 principles of design and explain them ... for example: Although I have identified 4 elements and 2 principles of design, in total there are 7 Elements of Photography (line, shape, colour, tone, texture, space, form) and 7 key Principles of Design (balance, emphasis, movement, pattern, repetition, proportion, rhythm, variety and unity) - explain briefly what these mean. for example 'Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture, shape' - use this link for further examples Then choose one area of focus and complete a natural forms photoshoot of 15-20 images ... for example: POWERED BY https://hajragcsephotographypghs.weebly.com/abstract-nature.html

I used a camera from school. This camera was called Canon EOS. The DSLR was 4000D. The lens was 18-55mm. I took the pictures in black and white as shown above. The weather was not very hot or not very cold but it was damp as it had been raining the day before and for some days before that. I think that the rain on the plants effected my shoot but looked very effective as you could zoom on the droplets. The lighting was good as it was during the day and not dark. I used ground level for my shoot. I gained the experience of taking photos outside with a professional camera and the experience of taking photos in black and white as I haven't done that or experienced it before. I think taking my shoot outside was very interesting as there were very interesting things to look at. There was also plants I had never seen before which was very exciting and also taking therm in black and white.
Best Images: The strength in this image is the shadow that is on the leaf. This is a great look and is very effective. When post-processing, I used PIXLR to further strengthen my image, I edited the white balance, exposure, tints, levels and curves. The use of the aperture setting f/3.4 in this photo, means that there is a lot of detail. There is also a very clear focal point.. A strength point was the vantage point as it captured the lighting from the sun, which created a good amount of light shining off the water droplets.
I chose this image because it successfully uses simplification with the use of depth of field, lines, viewpoint and shape. The lighting draws our attention to the detail on the water droplets which are scattered all of the leaves. To post edit this image, I changed the white balance, exposure, tints, levels and curves on PIXLR. I also used the tools: tint, exposure (but I tried not to over expose the image) and contrast. I am very pleased with my final result.

COMPONENT 1 I have chosen this image because there is the element of shape in this image. The curve in the leaf looks very detailed. In this image, you can also see contrast in the colours on the leave. As a result overall, I am very pleased at how my image came out and also how have edited it on Pixlr. For example, brightness, exposure and contrast.
Artist Investigation / Edward Weston “Anything more than 500 yards from the car just isn’t photogenic.” – Edward Weston
Why this artist? To begin my Abstract Nature Artist Investigations I will initially study the work of Edward Weston because his work links to the work I am doing.. Who is he? Edward Weston was born on the 24th of March 1886 and is best known for his still life photographs of peppers and shells, his heroic portraits, and abstract close-ups of nudes, rocks, and trees. Why the quote? I chose this inspirational quote because it sums up the work of Weston because it shows how he took images up close and how his images were mostly about detail. Why this video? This video is inspirational to me because it uses the most detailed photos he took and the most effective ones. Below are a selection of 10 Weston images that are inspirational to me because the images are very detailed and there is only one thing in the picture to focus on. They are very unique.

photograph is Pepper No.30 dating back to 1930. The genre of this photograph is Abstract and Still life. The props I can see in this picture is one green pepper which is very deformed. The Photographer uses the 7 visual Elements of Art in his work to create this photograph. In my opinion, the strongest elements are shape and texture. The photographer uses shape well in his work because it is a very deformed shape so it is very unusual, and he uses texture well because it is very detailed with lines and curves.
The composition of this photo has a very important subject in the foreground and a very dull and dark background. You could also say that the rule of thirds is being used. You can see this as the focal point is in the centre of the image. The way the pepper looks leads the viewers eye around the images. The main light wraps and shines on the pepper really. The curves stand out on the pepper. The secondary light reflects on the pepper too, highlighting the left side of the pepper. Wherever the light is, the shadow is - shadows are a huge part of the image too. The shadows show detail in the image. I feel like this photograph conveys a message of peace and tranquillity. It does this by using such an ordinary subject and using elements like contrast, tone, balance, shape, form and a central composition. This is relevant to the project because of how usual and everyday the subject of the image is.
Shoot Plan / Edward Weston Shoot Plan: This shoot was inspired by Edward Weston’s Bell Pepper No.30 because the image was very effective and interesting. The shape was very unique as it can be seen differently is you look at it very carefully paying full attention to the little details of the image. Example: the shadow, the background, the shape of the pepper. The shoot will take place in my photography classroom inside school. It is going to be taken around midday. I need to make sure that too much light is not exposed in my picture because I don’t want my image to be over-exposed. I also need to make sure that the lighting is not under-exposed either. The props used will be a vegetable or fruit of my choice. I will also use a flower pot which was inspired by Edward Weston as he had a curved background. It looks very effective and too much background will not be exposed. It will block out any other background and unwanted props that may distract my viewer. The lighting conditions I will require is natural light coming from the sides and I will adjust this using the blinds in the classroom. I will POWERED BY experiment using low key because I want it to be in the inspiration of Edward Weston. https://hajragcsephotographypghs.weebly.com/abstract-nature.html

My subject will be front lit. The lighting will be natural light. I will adjust the white balance on my camera to daylight. I intend to shoot with a Canon EOS using a lens on a tripod because I want my image to be perfectly still and detailed. I intend to use a small aperture f/22 for a large depth of field.

Horst P. Horst / The unfamiliar and abstracted F ashion photographer Horst P. Horst used rotational symmetry to create new patterns. His book, Patterns from Nature (1946), has inspired me to create my own series of rotational symmetry patterns using my work so far. Here are some of my examples:

Karl Blossfeldt Shoot Plan This shoot was inspired by Karl Blossfeldt because I have been interested in the way he creates his detailed and simple images using nature and I was keen to emulate his style. The shoot will take place in the classroom at school and also at home for homework. I used the classroom because I wanted and was able to set up a lightroom for the High Key Photography and at home I used natural light and I also tried to improvise by making a light studio, by using my lamp and phone torch. I wanted to avoid shadows so that the image was mainly focused on the object instead of its background. The props used at school will be a tripod for focus and avoiding blurred images , a plain background, a camera, a plain background, soft boxes and nature. The props that I used at home will be a plain background (preferably a plain white piece of paper), my phone (iPhone XS Max), and a source of light. I will shoot in High Key for the majority of my images. I will need to control the lighting to avoid shadows. The lighting will be a soft box and also natural light. I intend to shoot with a school camera (DSLR 4000d) using a lens on a tripod because my image will be more focused and will prevent blur. However at home I will intend on using my own camera.

Editing Process / Karl Blossfeldt To edit my best images I intended to use an image editing software called Pixlr. When I was editing my images I focused on three key areas of cropping, adjusting the background and amending the levels of the image. Here are some screenshots of the process. 1. Cropping the images using the rule of thirds:

MY EDITED OVERLAYS - KARL BLOSSFELDT There is a free image editing software called Pixlr and thanks to this I was able to edit my images to make them look more presentable. An overlay is normally added on a new layer in order to separate the image that is being edited with the overlay image. These overlays add texture and age to the image, making it look older than it actually is. This is a technique regularly used when emulating Karl Blossfeldt, as his images are aged and have signs of wear on them. Then, I used the layer filters 'Screen overlay' and 'Layer transparency', this made the overlay see through and gave the effect seen below. I then added subtle vignette to add to the overall feel of the image.

Artist Investigation / Dennis Wojtkiewicz
Email Quote – Direct Artist Response I use a Canon EOS 90D camera with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM fixed lens. The only reason I even know about the technology is because my colleague told me that's what I needed and would be the biggest bang for the buck. The rest of it is all by feel. I have absolutely no photo training. For me that suffices because I'm not hung up on technical stuff. Just looking for ways to capture information for my paintings.
ennis Wojtkiewicz is an American Hyperrealist painter and D draughtsman. Wojtkiewicz graduated from Southern Illinois University and is artist associated with the Hyperrealist movement. He is best known for his large scale renderings of sliced fruit and flowers. I will use his work to inspire further abstracts in my own project.

Photographic Techniques / Macro Photography Macro photography is extreme close-up photography, usually of very small subjects and living organisms like insects, in which the size of the subject in the photograph is greater than life size.
