PERSONAL PROJECTS: ABSTRACT NATURE

UNDERSTANDING ABSTRACTION Abstract photography is a means of depicting a visual image that does not have an immediate association with the object world and that has been created through the use of photographic equipment, processes or materials. It often is close up images that potentially uses the 7 elements of art.

In abstract photography I noticed 3 main art elements; Form- the shapes of objects which creates the main bulk of the image. Form refers to three dimensional objects. Forms that are three dimensional are known as real forms. Colour- this will draw the viewer in and keep the attention for longer. Exciting colours add depth and vibrancy to the overall image. Texture-this adds interest, creates confusion and intrigue. You can break up the image with contrasting textures and make your audience question what they see. Include textures that make your audience want to reach out and touch- these are known as realistic or implied textures.

Abstract Photography in more depth: Abstract photography can never have an exact definition as we all have our own views on the world. However, it is known for it's creative identity and it's shapes, colours, textures, tones and lines. Abstract is something that is unique and different, meaning you are able to imagine what's in the image without it actually being right or wrong.

UNDERSTANDING 4 ELEMENTS AND 2 PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN Line- Lines are one of the fundamental elements of any photograph. Lines exist in every photograph. If they are not apparent in the image, they are omnipresent in the framing of the photograph. The images I have selected use the element line in quite a visible way, they all emphasise lines in different ways, these are called leading lines.

Shape- Rounded shapes, like circles and ovals, create a sense of movement because of the lack of corners and edges. Squares and rectangles and those straight edges and sharp corners, on the other hand, tend to create a felling of stability. Triangles in photography direct the eye to the point of the triangle.

Positive & Negative space- Positive space is any part of the photo that jumps out from its surroundings. That includes your subject, for example, along with other noteworthy areas of detail. Negative space is just the opposite — parts of an image that don't attract as much attention, surrounding the positive space and giving it a buffer.

Repetition- Repetition in photography composition is to photography what rhythm is to a song. Repetition of an item, colour or element creates a pattern, and patterns draw the eye in to a photograph. Although the shapes aren't all exactly the same, the repetition of similar shapes forms a pattern.

Contrast- Contrast is the range of difference between different tones in a photograph. In black and white photography, contrast describes the difference between the darkest and lightest tones, but it also defines the grayscale. In colour photography, contrast applies to how sharply colours stand out from one another.

lthough I have identified 4 elements and 2 principles of design, in total there are 7 Elements of Photography (line, shape, colour, tone, A texture, space, form) and 7 key Principles of Design (balance, emphasis, movement, pattern, repetition, proportion, rhythm, variety and unity) - explain briefly what these mean, for example 'Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, colour, texture, shape' For my first investigation, I have chosen to look at the use of shape within nature. Here are 15-20 abstracted images where I try to emphasise the use of shape in nature.

INVESTIGATION OF ELEMENTS/PHOTOGRAPHY SHOOT (LINE/PATTERN/TONE) Contact sheet:

Within this abstract photo shoot I used my bridge camera with my undetachable lens. I shot with the aperture priority setting in black and white with the monochrome setting. With the aperture setting I used f/3 as this was the lowest my camera's aperture would go. Sadly, I am currently having to work from home so I did my shoot in my back garden and I took these shots when environmental conditions were good so sadly no rain drops for added effect! It was pretty bright outside when I took these images some may even look slightly over-exposed in the background which is a bit disappointing. I varied my vantage points to create different viewpoints For example, some shots I took from ground level and some up close. Finally, what I learnt from this shoot was changing the aperture effects the image a lot and I POWERED BY https://keiracrossleygcsephotographypghs.weebly.com/abstract-nature.html

shall learn to improve more on changing it. I also intend to get closer to my object next time to further improve as HOME COMPONENT 1 getting less background in the image makes it more abstract.

BEST IMAGES: I believe this is one of my best images as it shows a lot of contrast with tones, there are also details further back in the image which draws attention to not just the centre but the whole of the image. I have also edited this image using pixlr and when editing I mainly focused on adjusting the histogram levels, exposure and tints of the image to create even better effect. I also believe the vantage point this image was taken from adds to it's strengths.

This image is one of my best images as the dynamic approach I took with it makes the viewer explore the image and it's detail. I edited this image again using pixlr and focused on the same adjustments as the previous image. The element line can also be visualised in this image as the plant stretches across the image.

I feel this image was successful as it has contrast with highlights and shadows. I edited it slightly by adjusting the histogram levels and temperature. It has quite a shallow depth of field (DOF) as it is a pretty close up of the plant. The eye of the viewer is directed to the centre of the image as the plant in the middle is a good example of pattern, shape and tone.

In this image the elements shape, tone and pattern can be identified. This makes the image successful as it creates a dynamic view for the viewer. This image also has a shallow depth of field (DOF). I edited this image by adjusting the levels on the histogram and making the temperature appear more chilly.

ARTIST INVESTIGATION/EDWARD WESTON “The camera sees more than the eye, so why not make use of it?” – Edward Weston “I see no reason for recording the obvious.” – Edward Weston

Why this artist? To begin my Abstract Nature Artist Investigations, I will initially study the work of Edward Weston because he focused on abstract photography, he was always looking for unusual in the common things which made them abstract in their own way. Who was he? Edward Weston was a 20th century American photographer who was the first person in 1937 to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship. Why the quote? I chose these inspirational quotes because they sum up the work of Weston as he mentions how he doesn't think there is any point in recording the obvious. Why this video? This video is inspirational to me because it shows how successful and well-known Weston became with the work he processed.

Below are a selection of 10 Weston images that are inspirational to me because there is creativity in each image, he has taken ordinary things and created a view of something totally unique which is quite fascinating to me.

SEMI ANALYSIS/EDWARD WESTON (Subject) Describe what you can see in the photograph and explore the image's genre. The photographer of this image is called Edward Weston. The title of this Photograph is Pepper no.30 which was photographed in 1930.The genre of this photograph is abstract still life. The prop I can see in this picture is a deformed green pepper which creates an illusion of a human being.

COMPONENT 1 (Element) Explain how the elements of photograph are composed. The photographer uses 7 visual elements of art in his work to create this photograph. In my opinion, the strongest elements are shape, tone and texture. The photographer uses shape well in his work because the pepper in the image is almost looks like a human which is interesting for the viewer. The photographer also uses tone well in his work as you can see all the shadows and highlights of the image he's developed. like the light shining on the top of the pepper and the corners of the image are blacked out. The photographer uses texture well in his work as you can see in the bottom of the image it has a scratchy effect were the pepper is placed. The pepper also has depth and curves. (Media) What techniques were used to make this photograph? How was the image taken and what with? The photo has been taken from a short distance as it creates a shallow depth of field. (DOF) This is to create the main focal point of the image in the centre. The pepper has been placed in the middle of what looks like a plant pot this is placed in the middle ground of the image to have the viewer's eyes lead more towards the centre where most of the detail can be seen. In the top, corners are more blacked out than what they are in the bottom, as they have a more scratchy grey detail. The lighting used is natural and the image was most likely taken by a window to create a side light, to get the result of highlights and shadows. (Intent) What was the photographer trying to 'say' in the image?I feel the photo conveys a message of seeing the beauty in the weird. In my opinion, it gives a sense of inspiration to those who feel discouraged and maybe hide away from the rest of the world, to come out from hiding and be themselves. This is done by the extraordinary view that makes the pepper look like a human being this is implying that in simple, unusual things, beauty and creativity can be found. Weston was all about finding the unusual so this fits the theme as it clearly isn't obvious at first glance that the image is simply at pepper.

SHOOT PLAN/ EDWARD WESTON his shoot is inspired by Edward Weston as his work was very good as an abstract photographer and he included T amazing detail in each photography he developed. In his shoot he often used fruit or vegetables to emulate other common things in everyday life. He used natural light to bring the highlights and shadows of the image which came from the side. My shoot is going to be taken indoors using natural light coming in from the side and I will be controlling this light using blinds. I am using natural light as it brings the more natural highlights and lowlights. For my shoot I will be using a pepper and a plant pot to create a frame I will also be using my bridge camera and a kit lens (as it isn't detachable). A tripod will also be set up to get the angle I desire and require to get the right amount of light in the shot. The shoot will be shot in a low-key photography form with side lighting to create shadows. I am going to shoot with aperture priority. The lighting conditions I will require are natural light rather than artificial because natural light is used in the original photograph. I will experiment using high or low key because i want to achieve the similar tones in the image to gain more of a Weston feel. My subject will be side lit and i will control my lightning using the window blinds. The lighting will be natural light from outside (coming in through a window). I will adjust the white balance on my camera to daylight or cloudy depending on how the image looks with each one. Personally, I think cloudy might give it a less bright effect which is what I want in this case as that is how Weston's image looks. I intend to shoot with my bridge camera using a kit lens on a tripod because my camera doesn't have a detachable lens option. My camera is a Kodak PixPro .I intend to use a larger aperture f/3 for a very shallow depth of field as I want to capture the details of the pepper in greater depth. I intent to use a fast shutter speed because it will catch further detail than a slow shutter speed would and that is what I aiming for in my shoot.

EDITED IMAGES / EDWARD WESTON This image is one of my best images because it has more depth of detail as you can see the inside of the pepper. I edited this image slightly by using level, brightness and contrast adjustments to make the detail of the pepper stand out in even greater depth I also cropped the image to remove the unwanted area. The juiciness of the pepper is visible as I used the flash to take this image.

This is another one of my best images as you can see are the small cracks in the avocado seed giving great textured effect. Again, I edited this image slightly by using level, brightness and contrast adjustments and I did this using pixlr. I believe this image is successful due to the amount of detail. I also cropped this image for a cleaner finish.

ABSTRACTION THROUGH CYANOTYPES / ANNA ATKINS Anna Atkins whose original name was Anna Children was a botanist / photographer in the 1800's. She was born on the 16th of March 1799 Tonbridge, England. Some sources say she was the first woman to ever create a photograph. Anna died on the 9th of June 1871. The advantages of using cyanotypes is it's relatively cheap and easy to use. Another advantage of using cyanotypes is no major equipment is needed and a darkroom is not required. The disadvantages of using cyanotypes to create a cyanotype you must use a natural light source (the sun) so you must be outside. However, it all depends on the time of day and year you are developing the image as accuracy will change.

Here are my cyanotypes that I created in lesson. I really enjoyed this technical process because it was interesting to see how the chemicals worked in the natural light. I also enjoyed seeing the finished process. I found the masking technique really creative.

ARTIST INVESTIGATION / KARL BLOSSFELDT After studying the work of Edward Weston, Anna Atkins and Horst P. Horst I will now further my research into Abstract Nature by looking at the work of Karl Blossfeldt. Karl Blossfeldt was a German photographer who was born on the 13th of June 1865 and is mostly famously known for his close-up photographs of plants and living things which were published in 1929 as Urformen der kunst. Blossfeldt died on the 9th of December 1932.

“The plant never lapses into mere arid functionalism; it fashions and shapes according to logic and suitability, and with its primeval force compels everything to attain the highest artistic form." --Karl Blossfeldt

I chose this inspiration quote because it sums up / typifies the work of Blossfeldt because he tells us about the real intelligence of plants and why we should photograph it. This video is inspirational to me because it shows his work of high-key photography and close-ups. Blossfeldt used lenses he could modify to get more accurate details and textures of the images he took, he often used a macro lens. He also used the rule of thirds and negative space in his work this was shown in the video. Below are a selection of 10 Karl Blossfeldt images:

SHOOT PLAN / KARL BLOSSFELDT This shoot was inspired by Karl Blossfeldt because I have been looking at the way he creates abstracted forms from nature I was also inspired by the use of high key and restful composition as it really brought out the detail of each natural object, this made me keen to emulate his style. The shoot will take place in the classroom and at home for homework. I used the classroom because I can set up a lightroom for high key photography and at home I improvised by making a mini light studio by using a flash. The props used will be natural forms such as seed heads and shells because these were commonly seen in Blossfeldt's work and provide good amounts of texture, line and form. I will shoot in high key for the majority of my images using a combination of soft boxes, LED lighting and also natural ambient light. I will need to control the lighting to avoid shadows and contrast, to do this I used soft boxes. I will use my Kodak pixpro AZ422 bridge camera (which uses a kit lens 24-1008mm) that will be used on a tripod. The high-key camera setup will need an aperture of f/22 and a shutter speed of 1" however on my own camera I will use these settings in manual and have an aperture stop of f/20. I intend to use a small aperture for a large depth of field and will shoot in sepia to give an aged look to the photoshoot.

Cropping the image using the rule of thirds:

2. Using the magic wand tool to select and edit the background:

3. Adjusting the levels of the image for the correct range of tones and contrast:

MY EDITED OVERLAYS/KARL BLOSSFELDT sing PIXLR, a free digital editing software, I was able to explore the U use of layers and overlays. Overlay's are basically images that are added as an additional layer to photographs in order to add textures and elements that were not there in the original shoot. I uploaded my initial image onto PIXLR then inserted a new overlay using the 'add image as layer tab.' Once this was done, I used the 'Screen Overlay' and Layer Transparency' options to layer a 'scratches & dust' effect onto to my edited Karl Blossfeldt Photography. I added a subtle vignette to further the vintage feel to the image. Examples of overlays:

My overlayed images:

Once my overlays were completed, I then uploaded the images onto PhotoFunia, another online editing platform. Using the ''Vintage Photo' tool I edited my best images, my best examples have been 'framed' below.

KARL BLOSSFELDT EVALUATION I have gained a lot from the Karl Blossfeldt work, from both school and at home. Such as the skill of creating my own DIY tripod to hold up my camera when at home and not in school were, they provide one. In school I gained the skill of being able to take high key photography images. I learned this from the high key photography shoot inspired by Blossfeldt that we did in school, to achieve this shoot we used, a prime lens, tripod, box lighting, light studio, a fast shutter speed and a 2 second timer. In school, I also learned a lot about different shutter speeds and apertures and how different lenses make photos look different, I also learnt a range of different types of photography techniques for example Karl Blossfeldt’s close-up technique. The photos I had gained from the shoots we did, were digitally edited using the softwares PIXLR and photofunia and from that I gained the skills of cropping, using the magic wand and selection tool, contrast, layers, overlays, filters and vignettes. We also took the edited images to photofunia to add a vintage feel to it along with a frame. I believe my most successful outcome from the Blossfeldt work would be my 9 edited images, as they all have good contrast in lighting and colour, to be more precise the lights and darks of the background and the prop they also have the correct levels of exposure. I believe my strengths I have gained so far, are having the correct exposure for an image and editing an image to a decently good standard, I also learned about aperture levels in more detail which I now further understand in more depth. My weaknesses are shooting from home as they never turn out as well, I don’t have the right equipment to create a good lighting and backdrop for the images. I also use a bridge camera which I am unable to change the lens for different shoot styles.

ARTIST INVESTIGATION / DENNIS WOJTKIEWICZ Email Quote – Direct Artist Response I use a Canon EOS 90D camera with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM fixed lens. The only reason I even know about the technology is because my colleague told me that's what I needed and would be the biggest bang for the buck. The rest of it is all by feel. I have absolutely no photo training. For me that suffices because I'm not hung up on technical stuff. Just looking for ways to capture information for my paintings. Dennis Wojkiewicz / Jan 2021

The final artist in the Abstract Nature project is Dennis Wojtkiewicz. This artist differs from my other artists because he uses photography to get references to paint as he is a painter. However, there are similarities in his use of macro photography.

Dennis Wojtkiewicz was born in 1956 and is most famously known for his large scale renderings of sliced fruit and flowers. His website is: www.wojtkiewiczart.com

The quote is from a direct email response from Dennis. W himself. From the email, I was able understand what equipment & techniques he uses such as a macro USM fixed lens.

This video is inspirational to me because it shows both his talent in photography and painting. As he uses a macro lens to take his close-up images and proceeds to paint them after.

MY 10 PERSONAL FAVOURITE IMAGES OF DENNIS WOJTKIEWICZ

PHOTOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES / MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY Macro photography is extreme close-up photography, usually of very small subjects and living organisms like insects, in which the size of the subject in the photograph is greater than life size. The benefits to this kind of photography are being able to shoot at any time of the day and the subject matter changes every month.

This shoot will take place in my livingroom as it is a dark place where the artificial light will take most effect. I will use a citrus fruit placed on a glass bowl with a lamp bulb underneath to create the back lighting. I will be using my Kodak bridge camera with it's kit lens I will use the macro setting that my camera provides. I will use a slow shutter speed and an aperture between f-8 and f-12 and i will use a low ISO for better quality images.

FINAL EVALUATION During this project I believe I have gained important knowledge, skills and understanding, such as learning the key elements of art and principles of design and how they can be found in photographs in photography. I also gained the ability to take decent quality images and edit them using an editing website called PIXLR, as well as creating contact sheets using those images and labelling the images that went well and the ones that didn’t. Furthermore, I gained experience on making a website look clear and tidy and how to present my work. Throughout this project I have developed my understanding of abstract photography by exploring the theme of nature, this theme was all about nature in its abstract forms which show off its beauty that can be caught using photography. Throughout this project we researched a total of 5 artists, the first artist we researched was a 20th century American photographer named Edward Weston. I was inspired by his work because of the way he took his images, he used to take his images using an oldfashioned camera to then develop them images using a darkroom this was until he sadly died in 1958. Weston featured many elements of art and principles of design in his work (which I learned), However the strongest featured in my opinion were, shape, tone and texture. I emulated his work by taking images using my Kodak PixPro bridge camera with a kit lens which were inspired by his famous image known as Pepper No.30. Finally, Weston’s work helped me explore the theme of abstract nature as he takes images of unnatural looking veg such as the pepper and he shows the beauty within the weird. The second artist we researched during this project was a botanist/ photographer in the 1800s called Anna Atkins she was an artist who took images without using an actual camera instead she used a technique which was creating cyanotypes, this was where you would use special chemicals to develop and image in a natural light source. She used elements such as shape and texture in her work. I emulated her work by creating my own cyanotypes in class, this was a fun lesson as we got to watch the chemical process take place. I was inspired by her work as she was the first female to ever create a photograph and she did it in such a creative way. Finally, her work helped me understand more about abstract nature as she used chemicals to show the details and beauty of plants as the images she created developed in natural lighting. The third artist researched was a fashion photographer named Horst P. Horst, he used rotational symmetry to create new patterns. He mainly used the elements of pattern, texture and balance. I emulated his work by taking some of my own images and rotation them to create images that looked similar to his rotated style. I was inspired by his work as he created some unusual creative images that looked abstract, which is why he helped me to further understand abstract nature. The fourth artist we researched was a German photographer called Karl Blossfeldt who was famously known for his close-up photographs of plants and living things. I was inspired by his work as he expressed the intelligence of plants in his images. He used the elements of line, shape, tone and form. I emulated his work by taking a series of images in class using a DLSR camera with a prime lens we shot using a 2 second timer and soft boxes creating a good amount of light, we edited a few of these images using the editing site PIXLR and another site called Photofunia. His work helped me understand the theme of abstract nature as he showed the natural beauty of plants and living things through imagery. The fifth and final artist we researched during this project was an American painter called Dennis Wojtkiewicz who uses photography to get references to paint. I was inspired by his work as he was known for photographing mostly fruits using a macro lens (which is a lens that shoots close-up images) this was inspiring as he captured every detail of the fruit to paint. I emulated his photography work by taking my own images using my bridge camera with a kit lens. For my shoot set up I used my phone flash under a glass with a slice of citrus fruit on top to create a transparency effect. He uses the elements of shape, colour and texture. His work helped me understand the theme of abstract nature as he shows all the minor details of each fruit he photographs and shows how important they are when it comes to painting. I feel my most successful outcome from this project was learning the skill of taking a good quality image with the correct exposure which required the knowledge of knowing which shutter speed and aperture to use in the environment the image was taken in. I also feel I was successful with my composition when it came to taking photographs as I managed to achieve the rule of thirds in many of my shots. I learned a lot when it comes to editing as I learned how to adjust the levels and exposure of images on an editing site, I also achieved many other editing techniques when it comes to editing a photo. F inally, I feel I gained quite a bit of knowledge on how to work a camera itself (which is the most basic thing to learn in photography) and this will definitely help me a lot in the future, I learned things such as how to set up a tripod (which improves the steadiness of the camera) and how to change a lens on a camera, I also learned how to work a shutter release cable which improves image quality in some circumstances. However, I still have a lot to learn when it comes to photography and that is why I have areas for improvement, such as enhancing my contact sheets by adding more notes and details such as what needs copping, or what is overexposed etc. I could also increase my creativity when it comes to photo shoots and editing, I could do this by adding different colours to the image when editing or adding overlays. I could also improve my artist research skills by adding more information and creating more detailed emulations. Finally, I could also explain and annotate my ideas in more detail by writing in my own words and using key words that are related to the idea.
