Personal Projects / Abstract Nature
Understanding Abstraction Abstract photography is experimental, clean and crisp and has the means of depicting an image that does not have an association with the object and has been created through the use of photographic equipment, processes or materials. It is important to consider the components of abstract photography such as getting close up, shadows and depths, emphasis on texture, lights, reflections, no background and repeating, colour, tone and pattern.

Understanding 4 Elements And 2 Principles Of Design Lines can be used to lead the viewers' eyes towards something significant using it as a focal point for the picture. They can vary from horizontal lines to Vertical Lines to Parallel Lines and Diagonal Lines and draw the eye to the natural and almost perfect shape. Line can also be used to draw the viewer by leading the Lines toward something. Line the picture with the tree Lines. These Lines are close to perfect and hook the eye because of its natural form.
Shape is used to create depth in a photo. It also makes the main object of the photo the focal point. The shape of the photograph can range from anything like a can to a mountain. It can be made by colours and lines. The Shapes in any photo don't have to be regular, they can also be irregular, curvy shapes, organic shapes, or geometric Shapes like squares and triangles.
Positive space can be used to make any part of the photograph pop out from its surroundings and is all about the objects in frame and draw attention to the focal point. Negative space can be used to attract less attention to the photograph and is about the space between and around the objects. If there is too much Negative space in frame, its can blur out the main focal point and make the picture pointless on the other hand, if there isn't enough Negative space in frame, the focus might not be what the photographer intended.
Texture can be used to capture life-like natural images and attract the focal point to any intricate little details that are in the photograph. When we tale about Texture, we are talking about the surface and how detailed or smooth it is. This can be revealed by not using shape, line and tone. The images i have chosen show that idea of the natural beauty in the texture of the wood.
Contrast can be used to make things stick out and show that things aren't the exact same. It is made by a number of different tones throughout the picture to create shadows and highlights. Contrast helps the harmony of the photograph by using different colours to make it stand out. Contrast is the ratio of different tones throughout the image and this helps to create highlights, shadows, textures, colours and clarity in a photography.
Repetition can be used as a focal point by drawing the eye to the photograph, the Repetition of an object hooks the eye because of the same repeated pattern, shape, line or colour. For example, the two pictures with the chair evidence this point exactly same at the one with the stone, however, the photograph with the glass doesn't represent this fully but does with the same Repeated colours, line and shape.

Investigation Of Elements And Principles Of Design Space in photography is having space in an image to draw the eye towards the main focal point to indicate a sense of motion or direction. This benefits to creating the main focal point. Form in photography is created by shadows and highlights to give a three dimensional shape. This happens when light hits the subject of the photograph which gives and creates form to an image and object. Balance in photography is when an image has specific areas that look balanced throughout the way an image is set out. This is performed by moving the frame/objects of the image and juxtaposing the main subjects of the image like colour or tones. Emphasis in photography is the defining of an area or object within the image that catches the viewers eye and makes the main focal point. Complementary colours draw the most attention to the eye. Movement in photography is mainly used when taking pictures of moving things and giving a visual of time being frozen. It is usually taken by using longer shutter speeds which record a certain expression or emotion within an image. Pattern in photography is used to draw attention to the image. Acknowledging the pattern and repeating of colours, shapes and lines can catch the eye. They can also give a meaning of texture to an image. Proportion in photography is the comparison of the size of the main object in the image. By comparing the size of one object to another, it can give more or less significance to an image. The The equality of colours being spread out is uninteresting to see. Rhythm in photography is the way the viewer looks at the image. If there is very few subjects or elements in frame, the rhythm is simple and calm. However, if there is multiple subjects or elements in frame, the rhythm is more upbeat and optimistic. Variety in photography is all about the varying of elements and objects in an image. It can also be a variety of exposure, angles or composition to give a different point of view or perspective to the image. Unity in photography is the visual beauty involving repetition and other important elements like contrast and colour which makes it pleasing to the eye. Bringing all the elements together indicates a sense of the image being strong and fitting together.
To begin my investigation I have chosen to look at texture within nature. I have explored different textures in nature on my walk and collaged 15-20 abstract images I have captured where I tried to emphasise texture within nature.

On my DSLR camera, I used a standard kit lens an put on the monochrome affect to make my pictures black and white. My aperture setting was f4 my shutter speed was 300-500 and my ISO was 100. The weather was a bit overcast but not rainy and this affect my ISO because if it was a sunny day, the number for my ISO would have been a complete opposite number. The benefits of a monochrome filter is that it makes the lines look more defined and sharp.

Best Images:
I have chosen this image because it has shadows and highlights and it looks quite elegant. The leaves are twisted and they are all going in different directions. In this picture there is no focal point. When editing this picture, I adjusted the brightness and contrast. I also adjusted the highlights and shadows to give it more of an eerie look. On the day of the shoot, the weather was overcast as you can see by the clouds. I used the kit lens that came with my camera .
I have chosen this image because of the blur at the top of the leaf and the definition and sharpness around the bottom. You can see the water drops on the leaves and the different strands of colours on them. This gives a feeling of natural beauty. The elements in this chosen image are texture and repetition.
I have chosen this image because you can see the shadows and highlights made by the leaves. The day this was taken was a bit cloudy but the sun came out and gave some depth and texture to this image. You can really see the contrast in the different colours on the leaves.
I have chosen this image because there is the element of line in this image. For example, the curved/fallen leaves and also the straight/stood up ones. In this image, you can also see contrast in the colors on the leaves with the other colours on the leaves but also the colour of the leaves in comparison to the colour of the sky. As a result of this, making the leaves stand out from the sky and showing all the highlights and shadows.

Artist Investigation / Edward Weston “The camera sees more than the eye, so why not make use of it?” – Edward Weston To begin my artist investigations, I will initially study the work of Edward Weston because he was a very inspiring photographer and he took so many photographs that are amazing and are from so many different genres. Edward Weston was born on may 24 in 1884 in America and is known for finding the beauty in ordinary things. I chose this inspirational because it sums up / typifies the work of Edward Weston because quote because it shows us that when he saw something and took a picture of it, he took a picture of it because of the beauty of its originality. This video is inspirational to me because it shows some of the more abstract and original images. Below are a selection of 10 Weston images that are inspirational to me because they are just ordinary objects you would see every day but Edward Weston made them into something beautiful, peaceful and abstract at the same time.
SEMI Analysis / Edward Weston Subject: The photographer of this image is Edward Weston. The title of this image is called Pepper No. 30 dating back to the 1930s. The genre of this image is still life as the pepper isn't moving and is staying still. The props I can see in the image are a pepper. Elements: The composition of the photo shows that as it in the middle ground/central, this indicates that the rule of thirds has been used making the image equal and divided. The viewers eye has been led around the image because of the composition and perspective Edward Weston has used. The perspective that Edward Weston has taken the photo from is eye level. The perspective is effective it shows what the object would actually look like if not through a camera. The photographer employs a range of visual effects in his work. The most striking elements are how crisp and sharp his images are and the contrast, shape and form highlight how natural his photographs are. In this photograph, the contrast is implied by the different tones of the black and white. The shape is placed in the image by the abnormality and abstractness; form is implied by the highlights and shadows of the subject of the image. Media: The photo has been taken from short distance so that you can see all of the details of the subject of the image and so that it is the main focal point of the photograph. The pepper has been placed in the middle ground. By doing this the viewer's eyes are lead to the center of the photograph and by doing this, it creates different focal points and leading lines. The photo has been taken in either studio or on a table using artificial light. The light system has been placed above which is highlighting the pepper and making shadows in the background of the image. This creates an atmosphere of contrast of the difference in the different highlights and shadows and focus of the details of the subject. To emulate this photograph, I would use a SLR camera, be in a studio and use artificial lighting. Additionally, I would need to research how he took his photographs and what settings he would use. Intent: I feel this photograph conveys a message of calm and tranquillity. It does this by using such an ordinary subject and using elements like contrast, tone, balance, shape, form and a central composition. This is relevant to the project and theme because of how ordinary the subject of the image is.
Shoot Plan / Edward Weston This shoot was inspired by Edward Weston because his images were so abstract and different to ordinary life when the images were taken from things you see everyday. I will be shooting near a window at mid-day to get the full benefits of the natural lighting like the shadows and highlights. The props used to take the pictures are a plant pot and a chair because I used it to get the lighting needed to get the desired photo. The lighting was from an angle on the side and they are low-key. It will be inside but using natural lighting from which i am taking the picture next to and also using a phone torch to add a bit more lighting tot he image. I intend to shoot with a cannon DSLR camera using a standard kit lens on a tripod because when taking the picture, my camera will need to be stabilized instead of my hand shaking and ending up with a blurry image. I will use a shutter speed of around 500 because of the fact I'm taking a picture of something that is still so it wouldn't need to be high, an aperture of f/5 because of that is the lowest my camera goes, and an ISO setting of 100 because I am using natural light and Edward Weston took dark pictures. I intend to use a larger aperture f/5 for a very shallow depth of field. I also intend to use a slow shutter speed because it wouldn't need to be fast as I am taking a picture of something that is still and not moving so there would be no need for a fast shutter speed.

I chose this image because you can see the natural light coming in from the right side of the image reflected in the tomato. You can also see how glossy the tomato is. This image includes shape, contrast and form. In this image, you can see the highlights and lowlights of the tomato and wrinkly, fragile stem contrasting with the youthfulness of the tomato.
I chose this image because you can see the wrinkles and texture shown in the slice of pepper and how sharp and define it is. You can see all the details and dents in the slice as well as the seeds in the other slice representing new life contrasting with the wrinkles and creases representing old life. This image includes elements like shape, contrast and texture. You can see the shape represented by the abstract shape of the peppers. There is contrast from the different tones of the image and the texture on the slice of pepper.
I chose this image because you are able to see the highlights and shadows from the cabbage and the focus of the vegetable. You can see this through the use of elements like texture, shape and contrast. You can see the texture from the cabbage shown through the different layers and the contrast from the different tones in the picture. The inner centre of the cabbage is an abstract image in itself.
I chose this image because of the highlights and shadows. Also because of the shapes show in the image; such as the shapes and lines shown in the onions and shapes and crispiness shown in the kale. This image has a main focal point which makes you look directly at the onion slices. This is shown by the use of elements like contrast, form, emphasis and shape. Contrast is shown by the different tones in the image. You can see the form from the shapes of the onion and kale. Emphasis is shown by the use of the two subjects of the onions and them being the subject of the photo which make it the main focal point of the image.

Abstraction Through Cyanotypes / Anna Atkins Anna Atkins was born on march 16 1799 and died on June 9 1871 and during that time she worked on cyanotypes by using light exposure and chemicals. She also wrote a book about her cyanotypes.
An advantage would be that they are cheap and easy to use and you also don't need a darkroom for this process. The disadvantages would be that they could turn out too light which could make the image look unappealing and blurred so that you cant make out the image.
Here are my cyanotypes that I made in lesson. I really enjoyed the technical process because of working with exposure and photosensitive materials. I also enjoyed being creative and making it look so abstract.
Horst P. Horst / The Unfamiliar and Abstracted Fashion photographer Horst P. Horst used rotational symmetry to create new patterns. His book, Patterns from Nature (1946), has inspired me to create my own series of rotational symmetry patterns using my work so far. Here are some of my examples:

Artist Investigation / Karl Blossfeldt After studying the work of Edward Weston, Anna Atkins and Horst P. Horst I will now further my research into Abstract Nature by looking at the work of Karl Blossfeldt. He is best known for his close-up photographs of plants and living things. Karl Blossfeldt was born on 13th June 1865 and was more famously known for his close-up photographs of plants and living objects. I chose this inspirational quote because it sums up/typifies the work of Blossfeldt because it states that his work is his way of reconnecting with nature and its beauty. This video is inspirational to me because it shows and explains his work and about its enlargement. These pictures are mainly macro photography and they show detail, texture, contrast, high key photography and natural forms showing some of his best plant "My botanical documents should contribute to restoring the link with nature. They should reawaken a sense of nature, point to its teeming richness of form, and prompt the viewer
portraits. He does this by using the rule of thirds to make his images look symmetrical and dynamic. Most of his images are in high key lighting because of the white background and
to observe for himself the surrounding plant world."
sharpness of the subject and allows more clarity and detail.
Below are a selection of 10 of Karl Blossfeldts images:
Shoot Plan / Karl Blossfeldt This shoot was inspired by Karl Blossfeldt because he used natural forms and made them look graceful and elegant. I was eager to emulate his work because of the way he made the natural forms look so peaceful. The shoot will take place in the classroom and at home for homework. I used the classroom because it is suitable for a light room and because of the amount of light there is such as natural light from the windows, the lights from above and the soft boxes. The props used will be the natural form, a tripod, the background of either a sheet or card, a plant pot to elevate the natural form and blue tack to hold it in place. The lighting conditions I will require is bright natural light from the windows, maybe a slightly overcast day, some artificial light from the soft boxes or lights above. I will experiment using high key because I am trying to emulate Karl Blossfeldts work. My subject will be front lit so there is no shadows in the background the image. The lighting will be both artificial and natural lighting due to the lights above and the windows. I intend to to shoot with the DSLR cannon 4000D using the standard kit lens and a tripod to steady the camera and the sepia filter. I intent to use a small aperture f/22 for a large depth of field. I intent to use a slow shutter speed because to let more light in as we are shooting in high key.

My Edited Overlays / Karl Blossfeldt Using Pixlr, a free digital editing software, I was able to explore the use of layers and overlays. An overlay is an image that can be added over the top of the original image to give it more character and to make it look more textured. I uploaded my image onto Pixlr then inserted an overlay using the 'add layer as an image' tab. When I had completed that, I used the 'screen overlay' and 'layer transparency' options to give the images an old-fashioned look to them, like Karl Blossfeldt.
Examples of overlays:

Once my overlays were completed, I then uploaded the images onto PhotoFunia, another online editing platform. Using the ''Vintage Photo' tool I edited my best images, my best examples have been 'framed' below. POWERED BY https://marissagcsephotographypghs.weebly.com/abstract-nature.html

Evaluation / Karl Blossfeldt The knowledge I have gained from my work on Karl Blossfeldt would be the use of High Key Photography and the lighting used to create such a rustic look. This would be lighting such as a ring light, box lighting and natural lighting. In school, I used box lighting and natural lighting. I also used a prime lens and a shutter speed of around 1 second. When I did my home shoot, I used a ring light to create the desired look. The editing used to create images like Karl Blossfeldts was on pixlr using the adjustments such as brightness & contrast, temperature & tint, highlights & shadows, exposure, filters, overlays, layers and vignettes. All of these were used to create an aged look to the images. My most successful outcome would be the 9 edits and the 2 overlays. I feel like I really enjoyed the editing processes when making the images more like Karl Blossfeldts. I feel they turned out really well. I also think my other most successful outcome would be the images I took myself. I think this because my images were central and it used the rule of thirds very well. In most of the images, there was symmetry and I feel the colours contrasted well when using the sepia filter on my camera giving the photographs a vintage and aged look. The images also don't look boring as there is depth and character in the image and the image is not full but it is free and clear. There was an good use of aperture, shutter speed and ISO which made the image look interesting. I feel I have done a good amount of research about the photographer Karl Blossfeldt which made me understand the images and how he took his photos on a better level. I feel I have also presented my work appropriately which makes it easier to find what your looking for and labels correctly what the work is for and who the photographer is. I used enthusiasm demonstrated in my work and I put lots of effort into my school work and homework which is also displayed in my work. I think one of my least successful outcomes would have to be my annotations on my contact sheets, I think this because when i see my contact sheet, I see that there is only a few good images out of the many taken in total which makes it difficult to pick out the best and worst one to annotate. I could improve on this by managing the aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Also, i think another of my weaknesses would be writing in more detail and depth when writing responses in my own words.
Artist Investigation / Dennis Wojtkiewicz Email Quote – Direct Artist Response I use a Canon EOS 90D camera with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM fixed lens. The only reason I even know about the technology is because my colleague told me that's what I needed and would be the biggest bang for the buck. The rest of it is all by feel. I have absolutely no photo training. For me that suffices because I'm not hung up on technical stuff. Just looking for ways to capture information for my paintings. Dennis Wojkiewicz / Jan 2021 The final artist in the Abstract Nature project is Dennis Wojtkiewicz. This artist differs from my other artists because Dennis is also an artist who turns his images into art. However, there are similarities in his use of still life with fruit. Dennis Wojtkiewicz was born in 1956 and is most famously known for his large scale renderings of sliced fruit and flowers. His website is: www.wojtkiewiczart.com The quote is from a direct email response from Dennis. W himself. From the email, I was able understand what equipment & techniques he uses such as the canon EOS 90D with a canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro fixed lens. This video is inspirational to me because you can see his work being very detailed and colourful.

Abstract Nature / Final Evaluation Throughout this project, I have developed my understanding of abstract photography by exploring the theme of nature. Initially I researched the work of Edward Weston. I was inspired by his work as I feel it really summed up the theme of abstract nature. I feel this is because his work has used the rule of thirds and has a focal point. His images are taken with a shallow depth of field so that you can see all of the details in the subject of the image. His images can be described as low key as it is 'easy going' and 'moderate' His images can also be described as having restful composition as it is 'calm'. The important knowledge, skills and understanding I have gained in his project would be things like low key and high key photography, restful and dynamic compositions. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of shape, texture and form. I feel my most successful outcome of the project would be the edits of my shoot. I think this because they are well laid pictures and the perspective is at the right angle. My areas for improvement would be to make my shoot better (without editing). My contact sheet for the Edward Weston work, the images are far too dark. The images would need retaking and exposure and lighting adjusting. The next artist I studied was Anna Atkins. I was inspired my her work as I feel it was really beautiful and natural. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of shape and space in my own examples. Inspired by their work, I created a series of emulations by copying the work of the photographer and making parts of the image my own. I investigated the technical processes of creating her work. Their work helped me understand the theme of abstract nature by using flowers and other things to make the images look more abstract and using contrast between the blue and white to make the image look more interesting. the important knowledge , skills and understanding I have gained this project was that photography doesn't always have to be taking pictures of mountains and portraits, it can also be other thing like cyanotypes. I feel like the most successful outcome from this project would be the images, working with exposure and using the photosensitive materials to create abstract images. After that, we studied Horst .P .Horst. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of pattern and lines in my own photography examples. Inspired by their work, I created a series of emulations by recreating their work but also changing certain bits. I investigated the technical processes of rotational symmetry. Their work helped me understand the theme of abstract nature by using images and rotating them so they create rotational symmetry. The important knowledge, skills and understanding I have gained during this project would be that photography can also be just moving an image around until it is symmetrical. I think the most successful outcome of this project would be that when I recreated his images, the composition and pattern of the images was good. My areas for improvement would be that some of my rotated image are blurry at places as I have cropped them at a bad place. My improvements would be that I could crop them in a better place. Then we studied Karl Blossfeldt. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of shape and texture in my own HOME COMPONENT 1 COMPONENT 2 photography examples. Inspired by the work, I created a series of emulations by trying to recreate the main elements of the images by the photographer. I investigated the technical processes of still life. Their work helped me understand the theme of abstract nature by using still life. The most successful outcome of the project would be my own shoot. This is because when I edited the images, they looked more like the photographers images. My weakness for this projects would be that some of my images have a darker background that some of the others. Finally we studied Dennis Wojtkiewicz. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of shape, form, lines and texture in my own photography examples. Inspired by the work, I created a series of emulations by trying to recreate their work. I invested the technical processes of macro photography. Their work helped me understand the theme of abstract nature by using certain lighting to emphasise the lines of the fruit. The important knowledge, skill and understanding I have gained from this project is that using macro photography make a restful composition. I feel the most successful outcome of the project would be the edits of the rotational symmetry in school. I feel this is because the flat lay gives the image no focal point, and when the image gets rotated and edited further, there is even less of a focal point leaving the viewer not knowing where to look taking in the image. My areas for improvement would be taking the image and emulating the photographers images.
