Portraiture And Identity

Personal projects: Portrait and identity Definition- Portrait photography, or portraiture, is a type of photography aimed toward capturing the personality of a person or group of people by using effective lighting, backdrops, and poses. A portrait photograph may be artistic or clinical. “In a portrait, I’m looking for the silence in somebody.” Henri Cartier-Bresson

I find this quote inspirational to the project because it expresses how much a person hides beneath their voice, and how it should be celebrated, through capturing it in an image.

Mind map

Early Inspirational Images Following the written mind map, I began to investigate portrait photography identity examples. Below are the findings from this research. I feel the most inspirational image was, for me, the image 3rd from the left, on the top row. It pictures a young black person, with lines edited over the face. This looks similar to prison bars, and is very prevalent today, due to the huge numbers of black people being killed and arrested by racist police officers.

Professional Portraiture Workshop/ Contact Sheet

Professional Portraiture Workshop/ Collaborative Shoot In the past, I have researched portraiture by completing knowledge organisers and taking part in a shoot, in which we looked at different types and angles of lighting. During this shoot we ensured the subject had good back and hand posture, making sure that the image would look its best. Also, we learned that Mr Dever is a professional freelance photographer, this helped to inspire the group. This shoot was done between 12:15 and 01:10 pm, to get the best ambient lighting. Additional lighting and equipment was used such a a soft box, reflectors, and a studio light. POWERED BY https://charliegcsephotographypghs.weebly.com/portrait-and-identity.html

To ensure confidentiality, we only used the initials of the model 3/25

to name the images, and after the shoot was printed, we covered the eyes of the model with black pen. Social distancing was difficult, so everyone who is not exempt wore face masks, and the entire group used hand gel between turns. Trip hazards were a problem, so our teacher warned us about wires and other potential hazards, many times throughout the shoot. From the shoot, I learned many different lighting types, such as fill, key, and back lighting.

Photography Techniques: The shoot was done indoors, using mostly ambient lighting, other techniques used were using a soft box, and a reflector. The camera flash was also used, at 1/16th power. The camera lens used was a 50mm prime lens, so that the subject's face was not distorted in any way, on a Canon DSLR camera. To avoid camera shake, we used a shutter release cable. Lighting was diffused using an umbrella, and shadows were avoided by sitting he subject away from the white backdrop. The camera was at a shutter speed of 1/60, and aperture F/11 to limit the background interference. Lastly, noise was avoided by using an ISO of 100, which maximised detail and picture.

Research and Investigation / Breaking The Rules After investigating photography in is school setting, I will look at non-traditional methods of creating images. I will start by breaking a single portrait photography rule, as portrait must be a single exposed face.

Research and Investigation / Double and Multi Exposure Double and multi exposure photography is when 1 or more images is layered on top of another, with gaps to see the lower image. These are often done with people and nature, but other images can be used to give different moods to the image. Double exposure started as a way to give the effect that someone has a twin, then evolved to suit our community today. multi exposure is used to created moods POWERED BY https://charliegcsephotographypghs.weebly.com/portrait-and-identity.html

Multiple things went well with this image, such as the exposure, how dynamic it is, and the warm tones within both the tree and face. The finished image is relaxed, and still, due to the lack of motion blur within the tree, this creates a soothing composition. I improved the image by cropping the edge, and I think further improvement could be done by expanding the image at the top, to show the full head. Another possible improvement could be the placement of the tree within the face. It would look better if it was further up, not covering the eye so much. From this process I learned that cropping an image changed the entire mood and feel of it, and how to use PIXLR to create a double exposure image. Smartphone App Initial Experiments / SnapSeed

Image Evaluation I used 3 separate images from the same shoot to create this final image. I like how the dark greens stand out against the sunny background, and how you can see the buildings through the leaves, although it could be improved by fixing the lighting between the images. I like how the statue's clothes blend through into the person's, my Grandad, clothes. It gives a stony effect, which could represent my Grandad's inability to show much emotion.

Artist Investigation / Sara Byrne I chose this photographer because of the colours within her work. The contrast between shades and tones in her images, create a great dynamic range. Byrne's work follows the rule of thirds well, with the face of the subject situated in the middle, or just above, of the image. Her images have a low noise level, and the focus is placed onto the subject, and the overlay. the backgrounds of the images are either blurred, or plain white/ cream coloured.

Shoot Plan / Sara Byrne Shoot Plan: In this shoot I was inspired by natural forms and weather patterns. I love how leaves move against the sky in a windy day. This fuelled some of my images in this shoot. The shoot was done outside, on my school field. Props were only what I found outside, and the camera, which was a compact. the lighting was purely from the sun, and the shadows that it created. After the shoot I edited some an d used them for a double exposure shoot. The weather was bright and sunny, and I used a Compact camera.

space.

I got some advice from my teacher, and eased some of the overlay image to create a better tonal range, and to highlight areas more. I brought back some of the tree, and a small area of the sky, which added more colour and warmth to the image. Finally, I erased the lower sections of the image to create a broken effect, and changed the levels a final time. After this, I repeated and rotated the image to create the final piece.

Research and Investigation / Double & Multi Exposure / Sara Byrne / Final Outcome Best Image Evaluation: Earlier, this set of images was blurry and messy. Since editing them further, and changing my images, they have improved greatly. I like the autumnal feel of the of the orange image, it makes it feel very calm. It could be improved by lowering the exposure of the subject, and increasing the contrast, to show more details. The opposing pink and blue versions of this image work very well together in my opinion.

Artist Investigation / Laura Williams I chose this artist because her art is easy to emulate, although still beautiful, and has meaning. I found that the image on the bottom row, second from the left, was taken in a town I have been to, Bruges, Belgium. It is possible that it is the same bridge we walked over, and this makes the image feel very familiar and safe. This image also has a good dynamic range, due to the dark trees and bright sky in the background. The image has a small focal length and a low ISO. A short exposure must have been used to prevent the model's hair from moving during the photograph. I could emulate her images by taking a mirror into the woods, or even garden, and hold it out while stood behind a tree or something similar, This would be an emulation of the image on the top row, 1st on the left. William's website is h ttps://laurawilliamsphotography.co.uk/

Shoot Plan / Laura Williams I was inspired by the most recent shoots I have done, portraits. This was because it showed how the lighting and shadows within an image impact on the look of the subject. I will complete this shoot outdoors, at around 12pm, because i plan to do a landscape shoot and will need the good lighting from the sun, high key. Models will be classmates, and props are limited due to the shoot being taken in school. I will likely adjust the white balance on my images to address the uncontrollable natural lighting used. The camera used will be a Nikon DSLR, with a kit lens. I intend to use a larger aperture, f/5, for a shallow depth of field in my portraiture images.

Research and Investigation / Best Image / Laura Williams Best Image Evaluation: This image went well because of the editing of exposure, lighting, and the double exposure. I particularly feel the elements of composition and balance are successful. I see that there is a theme of deep greens throughout the image. This creates the idea of sadness and melancholy. Also, the feeling of human emotion and nature being intertwined. By physically removing the subjects identity I have brought a greater meaning to the portrait by hiding the most recognisable part of a person. Identity is shown by the hiding of the face. This created the idea that the subject is hiding, and feeling invisible. The way that the subject is holding the frame himself symbolises that he is the on isolating himself, and being invisible is the consequences of this own actions. I like the neutral greens within this image because the entire thing is made up of them. They call work well with each other, and complement each other. The dark blue of the subject's trousers, and black shoes, stand out against the rest of the greens, which creates a sense of importance. This makes the image an oxymoron to itself, as the subject is hiding his face, making him seem unimportant.

Shutter Speed Workshops / Long Exposure / Motion Blur / Light Drawing What is Shutter Speed and Blur in Photography? Shutter speed is the length of time that the camera lets in light. A high shutter speed results in a low exposure. Safe shutter speed is impacted by lens type. Short shutter speeds are sued for sharp images, such as a bird flying, or person jumping. Longer shutter speeds are used for images such as a car driving along a still road or a stream running through a still forest. A macro lens would not be as good for long exposure photography as there is no room for movement due to the zoom.

I like how moody and mysterious the image is. I edited the image by changing the exposure, removing spots from the background, and changing the vibrancy. Mood is expressed by the contrast between the bright blue and yellow background, the difference between dark and light is quite interesting in an image. The bird has its back turned to the bright yellow, which further exaggerates this.

I chose this artist because of their ability to create a wide range of different images, and still create pattern and unity within their work. I like that some of the images look like fluid paintings, and others are much more simple. Some images are more monotonous than others, which creates many different types of image. Some of the images are more simple to emulate, and others impossible without the correct skill level and equipment. for example, the top middle image is very similar to something my class has done together, so could be emulated again. To emulate the images myself, i used a tripod, DSLR camera, and a darkened room. I edited my images using an app, and changing things such as the brightness, saturation, and many other things.

shall be content with silence.” ~Ansel Adams

What photographer and what technique do you want to combine for Composition 1: I want to emulate Sara K Byrne's work in my work, because of the stunning yet serene images that she creates. I want to use double exposure to create my work, as it brings nature and humanity together. This brings identity because colours and patterns can be used to create flags, and designs.

Shoot Plan: Next, I need to complete a nature shoot, and a portraiture shoot. Then, edit them together using Pixlr, to create a single double exposure shoot. I was inspired by the most recent shoot I have done, abstract nature. This was because it showed how the lighting and shadows within an image impact on the look of the environment. I will complete this shoot outdoors, at around 12pm, because I plan to do a landscape shoot and will need the good lighting from the sun, high key. This shoot will be done in my garden, and possibly in my local park. Props are limited in the park due to the shoot being taken in public, but I will be able to use a tripod. I will likely adjust the white balance on my images to address the uncontrollable natural lighting used. The camera used will be a Sony A2000, with a kit lens and telephoto lens. I intend to use a smaller aperture, f/1, for a large depth of field. I will most likely use auto focus. For the Portrait shoot, I will go to a photography intervention after school, and take pictures of my classmates there. The lighting will be ambient and/or artificial. It will be done between 3:20 and 5:00 (pm) and this means that the lighting will be less intense, especially from the windows, Contact Sheet 35+ Images:

Eberhard Grossgasteiger Eberhard Grossgasteiger is an Italian artist to takes photographs of flowers and trees. A lot of his work is taken at night, against the beautiful, star-filled skies. The work often features coniferous trees, and mountains. These images are brilliant for double exposure edits. His work has inspired some of my images, especially the ones of flowers. Before learning about Grossgasteiger, I set one of his images as my phone background. This is what has drawn me to his work. This image is the top right corner of the gallery, shown to the right. Other favourites of his are the sunflower images, in the middle row of the same gallery.

I find this image, shown below, so incredible because not only is the model perfectly in focus and lit, but so is the sky. Every star is bouncing off the image, creating a stunning background, Depth is created by the rope, running down the left hand side of the image, and the rocks in front of the subject.

Composition Design 2 What is the aim of this shoot? This shoot is based on light. The images I have taken so far, were done using a coloured light. I will edit these to improve the brightness, contrast, and white balance, then some of them onto a double/multi exposure image.

“Everything that you can see in the world around you presents itself to your eyes only as an arrangement of patches of different colours.” – John Ruskin

What photographer and what technique do you want to combine for Composition 2: This shoot was slightly inspired by the work of Aneta Ivanova, who combines cities, oceans, and flowers with people by using double exposure. Despite this, I took my own stance on the work, and created bright, contrasting pieces, unlike Ivanova, Shoot Plan: In this shoot I used a coloured light, a tripod, and my DSLR camera as props. I had my light turned off, so that the only light was coming from the coloured one. I had my settings on auto, to ensure each image was adjusted appropriately, as the different colours of light changed how bright, and contrasting the images were. I used a kit lens, and the shoot was done in my bedroom, with the curtains shut and light off. Thus was the only way to make the coloured light bright enough to make a difference. The fourth edited image shown, below the contact sheet, was taken with the light on. You can see how the coloured light only impacts on the ends of my hair. This worked for this image, but was not appropriate for the others. Contact Sheet 35+ Images:

Monotone design I really like the looming shadow in this image, although it is slightly underexposed. I like how the subject and background blend together, and how there are leading lines, making the veiwer see the image from bottom left to top middle/right.

Double exposure design

Multi exposure design In this image, 3 images are used, the red building and the white building being in separate images. I like how they work together, but the editing could be improved. I would like to have the subject's shoulders visible under the buildings overlay, as this would add detail and interest to the image.

Composition Design 3 What is the aim of this shoot? In this shoot I want to do another double exposure design, and some physical editing. I want to use images of paths and trees, put a portrait over them, use tracing paper to blur and obscure the images, and possibly burn parts of them too.

“It’s one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it’s another thing to make a portrait of who they are.” – Paul Caponigro

What photographer and what technique do you want to combine for Composition 2: I really like the work of Gemma Schiebe, which is done by placing tracing paper over the image and cutting select areas out. I plan to do this with my work. This is physical manipulation, which I am new to. The bright greens and blues within the images will be muted by tracing paper, and this will completely change the feel of the composition. Shoot Plan: The shoot will be done in my school carpark, in the early evening. I completed a shoot of myself. The outdoor shoot was done in the evening, as this allowed for low lighting. The cloudy skies allowed for this to work even better. The portrait shoot will most likely be done outdoors, using little light, all the available light came from cars, streetlights, classroom windows, and the very little sunlight we had lefty. I will use my, DSLR camera, and kit lens for the portraits. I will use a shallow depth of field, to focus only on the subject. I will do this by using F/5.

Evaluation / Portrait and Identity My work on portrait and identity used rhythm, pattern, colour, and contrast, among other things. I developed this understanding by creating shoots, portfolios, and compositions. Initially I researched the work of Laura Williams, I was inspired by their use of nature and digital editing. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of line, shape and harmony in my own photography examples. Inspired by their work, I created a series of emulations by taking a shoot outdoors, using a photo frame. I investigated the technical processes of double and multi exposure. Their work helped me understand the theme of abstract nature by giving me practice in digital editing. After this, researched the work of Sara K Byrne Through studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of line, shape and harmony in my own photography examples. Inspired by their work, I created a series of emulations by doing some double exposure images. I investigated the technical processes of double and multi exposure. Their work helped me understand the theme of abstract nature by giving me experience in double and multi exposure. The most successful part of the unit was composition 1. The lighting and colours worked well in the images, and the viewpoint fit the theme. During editing, I put some into black and white, and others double/multi exposures. The additional research on artists, Eberhard Grossgasteiger, went very well, I enjoyed this. To improve, I need to learn and understand more of my camera settings, improve my shoots, add more notes to my contact sheets, increase my creativity, and improve my skills of artist research, physical, and digital editing. My annotations also need more detail. The work on Sara K Byrne needs most work. My weaknesses are definitely image evaluations, physical editing, and artist researches.
