Portrait & Identity
Personal Project : Portrait & Identity Definition: Portrait photography, or portraiture, is a type of photography aimed toward capturing the personality of a person or group of people by using effective lighting, backdrops, and poses. A portrait photograph may be artistic or clinical. “There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment.” Robert Frank
I find this quote inspirational because it displays the idea that portraits aren't just about taking pictures but about humanity and the meaning behind the image and their identity.

Early Inspirational Images: Following the written mind map, I began to investigate portrait photography and identity examples. Below are the findings from this research. I feel the most inspirational image for me is the top left one as the different colours really interest me and the model seems to look as if she's glowing.
Professional Portraiture Workshop / Collaborative Shoot My prior research was done by creating a knowledge organiser and by watching a video on lighting. These helped me understand the techniques but also the deeper meaning behind it all. The shoot was taken with the help of Mr Dever who is a professional freelance photographer. The aim was to photograph year 11's who had missed their year book photos due to self isolating. The room set up included a white background using a sheet, a chair in the centre, a key light, fill light and backlight with a soft box with a 1/16 power, a shutter remote and a tripod. The lighting was mostly artificial but there was daylight coming through the windows. There was a safe working environment as everyone was socially distanced and had used hand gels and there was no trip hazards. We kept confidentiality as the faces of the models had a cross through their eyes and we didn't use their names instead a random code. From this experience I gained knowledge on lighting and the importance of it and how technical and precise you can be with it. I also leant it was best to use a 50mm prime lens to avoid facial distortion.

On PIXLR, I firstly cropped the image using the rule of thirds so the model was in the centre of the image. I then got rid of the green chair in the corner of the picture using the clone tool. Finally, I used he magic wand lasso tool to select the background and apply the blur filter to remove any background defects.
Research and Investigation / Breaking the Rules Now that I have investigated how professional photography is taken within a school setting, I will now look at alternative methods of making portraits which break the traditional methods outlined above. I will begin by breaking the first rule, that a portrait must be of a single POWERED exposed BY face. https://bethgcsephotographypghs.weebly.com/portrait--identity.html

Research and Investigation / Double & Multi Exposure A multiple exposure is the superimposition of two or more exposures to create a single image, and double exposure has a corresponding meaning in respect of two images. Some of the first double exposure photos emerged during the 1860s, they discovered how to make a portrait subject appear twice in a frame, as if they had an identical twin. The result was a playful and surreal approach to early photographs. Multiple exposures are of use to us in our portrait and identity project because, it can give multiple meanings and show different identity's. Contemporary Double and Multi Exposures

The strengths of my image was the cut around the models side profile as it is very sharp and gives the effect I wanted it to. The negative space around the face creates a good contrast from the face, which really makes the focal point stand out. To improve this experiment I would make the background a crisp white and make the opacity of the last layer less severe so that some details from the face can be shown. From this process I learnt how to do double exposure pictures and how to use the cut out mask tool. I also leant that by putting two images together it gives a beautiful effect that gives deeper meaning
Smartphone App Initial Experiments / Snapseed
Image Evaluation: he strengths of this image is the different colours used and the amount of detail T of the face you can see, without it being too much, that it takes away from the second layer. I also really like the peaceful, soothing theme it gives. This image also gives a deeper meaning of happiness and joy as the colourful bright flowers stereotypically represent the innocence, playfulness and joy like a child has. The cut around the silhouette is also very crisp and the over layer on top doesn't seep into the background anywhere To improve this image I could make a clear white background, although for this particular image I quite like the colour used. Finally, I could also increase the saturation of the background as I feel that there possibly could be too much of a contrast between the bright flowers and the almost black and white background

Research and Investigation / Double & Multi Exposure / Christoffer Relander
Why I chose this photographer. Christoffer Relander was my chosen photographer because his work shows deeper meaning behind the faces by using double exposure. The black and white effect looks very professional and I'm also interested in the use of nature. Overall, I really like his postediting using photoshop to blend the faces with trees or leaves or branches. His work is inspirational and I would emulate it by doing a school shoot of someone's face in black and white with good natural lighting. I would then photograph the edges of tree branches and other things in nature. After taking these shots, I would do double exposure to give the necessary effect.
“Reality can be beautiful, but the surreal often absorbs me. Photography to me is a way to express and stimulate my imagination. Nature is simply the world. With alternative and experimental camera techniques I am able to create artworks that otherwise only would be possible through painting or digital manipulation in an external software.” — Christoffer relander
Research and Investigation / Double & Multi Exposure / Shoot Plan Shoot Plan: For my Christoffer Relander emulation shoot, I will be taking inspiration from his post editing (double exposure) and his use of the black and white filter. I will take the pictures at school outside in the daylight to get a clear bright image with natural lighting. I will only use my camera for props using the kit lens and my plans for post shooting are to use the double exposure effect on the models face.

Best image evaluation: The strengths of this image is the clear emulation of the Christoffer Relander's work as I put this image in black and white. I feel like the gives the dark and dull effect I was aiming for. I also like the use of the over-layer which makes the image look scratched, This gives a rustic feel to it. Finally I also like the contrast between the background and the focal point of the image, as I feel that the main focus of the picture stands out more due to this. However, In my opinion, there is a slight difference in colour where the sections were cut out at the bottom of the face, which next improve.

Artist Investigation / D enis Sheckler “We’re all constantly inundated with images, there is a common tendency, where even the most beautiful photographs with a variety of dialled parameters do not attract the proper attention, therefore it is necessary to invent something original, funky, and sometimes absurd things, which will make people look at the art of photography in a new way” -Denis Sheckler
Why this artist? The first artist chosen for my portraiture project is Denis Sheckler. I chose this artist because his work really stands out with its vibrant colours. Who is he/she? Denis Sheckler was born in 1994, he is most famously known for his photoshopping work. His website is: www.collater.al/en/denis-sheckler-pills-forskills-graphic-design/ Why the quote? I really liked this quote because the reason i chose this artist to study was because his work was original and out of the ordinary like he said he wanted. Why this video? This video is inspirational to me because it shows how Denis would have created his work and it demonstrates how to emulate it too.
Photographic Techniques / Photoshop Denis Sheckler's unusual work is taken exclusively of women which is then, after the shoot, edited. In some cases he erases their face and replaces it with images. In others he adds details and makes them colourful. When doing the post editing, he uses the software photoshop.

Shoot Plan / Denis Sheckler I have drawn inspiration from Denis Sheckler because his work is colourful, exciting and creative. I plan for the shoot to take place in school with controlled lighting because this will cause a clear non-distorted portrait to be able to do further work on with post editing. The props I intend to use are a tripod, soft box and fill light because the tripod gets rid of shake and the lighting gets rid of unwanted shadows and gives shadows where wanted. The lighting conditions I will require are fluorescent I will experiment using high key because the high exposure will give the bright effect I'm going for. My subject will be front lit with no shadows. The lighting will be artificial light. I intend to shoot with a bridge camera using a kit lens on a tripod because having a stand gets rid of shake. When considering exposure, I intend to shoot with a slow shutter speed of 1/30 to create intentional motion blur. I intend to use a larger aperture f/5 for a shallow depth of field. Following the shoot, I plan to digitally edit my images using PIXLR or photoshoot. This is because i need to add the final details and add the colour.

Research and Investigation / 4 Best Edits Denis Sheckler
Research and Investigation / Best Image Denis Sheckler Best Image Evaluation: This emulation of Denis Sheckler's work is probably my favourite because I successfully adapted the original portrait by using PIXLR to give it an unusual image of flowers being hidden by a mask (the face). I feel the strengths of this image are the colour of pastel pink, keeping in the theme of Denis Sheckler, and the use of the flowers in the background which were successfully cut into the picture. Personally, I really like my editing skills in thus particular picture because there are no harsh cut out lines and no drastic change in colours. However, I do feel that the saturation is too high and could have been brought down a bit and that there could have been more going on in the background instead of a blank screen. Although distractions in the background could have taken away from the focal point.

Shutter Speed Workshops / Long Exposure / Motion Blur / Light Drawing What is Shutter Speed and Blur in Photography? Shutter speed is the time needed for your shutter to open and close. Motion blur is the streaking effect recorded when your subject, or your camera, moves during an exposure. This technique can be very effective as it can display the movement of an object or person and can also show the different emotions of people too. For example someone the image below of someone turning their head and presenting a different expression to before. This can be a very expressive form of photography.
Slow Shutter Speed Portrait Examples - creates a sense of movement, blur or dynamic motion
Fast Shutter Speed Portrait Examples - captures crisp details and freezes them in time
Photographic Techniques / Long Exposure hat is Long Exposure in Portrait Photography? W Long exposure photography can be explained as a technique based on keeping the camera shutter open for a determined length of time. If you’re shooting handheld, your shutter speed should be somewhere between 1/5000 and 1/40 of a second to get sharp images.

To start, I cropped and changed the contrast and temperature. Then I changed the image to auto black and white.
Best Image Evaluation: The successes of this image is the slow shutter speed movement of the hands away from the face which was really fortunate as it created a deeper meaning behind the image of perhaps shame or being hidden. I also really like the tones in this picture as they are dark and have a hint of blue in it which perhaps represents the depression being portrayed. Furthermore, I really like how the hand covering parts of the face is transparent, this could be demonstrating that the hand isn't real but is in fact just imaginary and instead of physically hiding the face, it is mentally hiding it. The limitation of this image is that the background is a bit distracting so takes focus away from the focal point, but it also gives a good effect of messiness.

Best Image Evaluation: This is my best image because of the focus on the centre of the picture with a complete blurred background, showing the movement. I also really like the lighting in this picture. I especially like the colours of the background, and the lines created by the motion blur. I feel like the meaning behind this picture is the passing of time and how the earth moves around all of us and how it is unstoppable. Furthermore, I really like the amount saturation in this picture. The limitations of the photo is it could have been taken at a better angle and it could be less blurred on the face of the model.

However if I was to be very critical of this picture I would say that perhaps the colour could have been spread to all the edges and corners too.
Artist Investigation / Maurizio Anzeri
Why I chose this artist I chose to do the photographer Maurizio Anzeri because their work is edgy and different and i love the use of physically editing by sewing into the pictures as it would give it texture and colour. In Anzeri's work, he has taken the base photo in a dark, colourless style and then after taken the photo and added the colour by sewing into it. To emulate their work, I would take shots of peoples faces, print them off and then do the same as Anzeri and sew into it to create an unusual pattern. "As long as something creates a reaction, its alive" - M aurizio Anzeri 'I work with sewing, embroidery and drawing to explore the essence of signs in their physical manifestation. I take inspiration from my own personal experience and observation of how, in other cultures, bodies themselves are treated as living graphic symbols.' - Maurizio Anzeri
Composition Design 1 The aim of this shoot: In this shoot, I intend to focus on the idea of beauty and decay and body dysmorphia. I want the polar opposites to give a sense of longing and sadness. Also want there to be a focus on the unrealistic standards society sets for people to look a certain way. I want this shoot to show how people are never content with how they look and that people aren't comfortable with their identity.
"The standard of beauty is not definite. We define it." ~ Shamcey Supsup " Standards of beauty are arbitrary. Body shame exists only to the extent that our physiques don't match our own beliefs about how we should look." ~ Martha Beck
What photographer and what technique for Composition 1: In my first composition design I will be taking inspiration from the photographer Denis Sheckler. His work focusses on portraits and using photoshop to edit his pictures. I have really taken my inspiration from this particular image as the photo gives off a theme of beauty and identity and the struggle to maintain the image of "perfection". The work of Denis Sheckler really stands out to me because of his techniques using colours like pastels and because of his use of overlaying images which creates a sense of originality. These processes convey the idea of identity because it shows that people like to change how they look and beautify themselves in order to look a certain way. I want to combine the pastel colours and the long exposure method with each other to create an image with a deeper meaning that can represent my idea of the struggle with being comfortable with your identity and your physical looks. Shoot Plan: I have drawn inspiration from Denis Sheckler because his work is visually intriguing and I love his post shoot editing skills which I will use on my shoot. I intend to take the shoot at home, as it will be easiest to work with the model there, as I will need to change my models makeup, because I plan to do two shoots with the technique of motion blur and long exposure with the models face clean and with makeup and the other dirty and with mascara pouring down it with surgery lines dotted around the face. I will then combine these two images to create a final piece of a mix of beauty and ugliness. The props I plan to use are a tripod, a light source, makeup and a chair which will stay in the same position, as its important the two shoots are taken in the same place. The lighting conditions I will require are well lit and bright so I can get a clear crisp view of my model. My subject will be front lit with natural light. I intend to shoot with an Aperture f/22, a shutter Speed 2" (seconds) and an ISO 80. Following the shoot, I plan to digitally edit my images using PIXLR. This is because it emulates Denis Sheckler who overlays images.

Evaluate: On this edit, I would say the positives are the clear view of the detail on both faces and the contrast between the faces and background. However, the outline on the face on the left is blurred which ruins the crisp effect of the picture.
Evaluate: The strengths of this picture is the colour which is in the style of Denis Sheckler and the crisp clear view of both faces (unlike the first image there are no blurred lines). The disadvantages of it is the shadows in the background which takes away from the focal point.
Evaluate: The advantages of this image is the vibrant pink colours and the effect of motion blur. However this is not my best shot because of the shadows in the background and the lack of focus on the two faces.
Evaluate: The bright aqua blue shows the inspiration i have taken from Denis Sheckler. Another strength is the detailed lines on the face on the right which helps convey the message of beauty. The negatives of this image is the shadows and the lack of contrast.
Composition Design 2 What is the aim of this shoot? In this shoot i aim to convey the way our minds all chaotically work and how things are seen differently from different perspectives. I want to show the chaos by over layering images with the technique Brno Del Zou uses. He uses portraits of peoples faces from different angles and puts them over each other, disfiguring them and making them disproportional. I will also do this shoot in the style of Denis Sheckler by using different colours to add interest and more chaos.

rno Del Zou B Brno Del Zou is a French artist born in 1963. In his "photo sculptures" series, Brno Del Zou uses the fragmentation of the body in order to better understand it. The body and the faces are revisited and their volumes are highlighted in order to create installations of multiple scales. He does this by distorting them with many layers, all taken in different scales and angles to represent the 'chaotic side of our minds'. He was inspired to do this project because he wanted to understand the human body in more detail in order to convey the chaotic ideas in his and our minds.
What I want to combine / shoot plan: For my second composition, I want to combine the techniques from Brno Del Zou of layering images and the pastel colours from Denis Sheckler. I think the combination of the over layering collage technique and the bright exotic colours will convey the message of chaotic thoughts more clearly. I will use a few shots taken from different angles when layering them as this will show the face from lots of different angles. For this shoot, I plan on using some of the images I took in my first composition which used a fast shutter speed instead of the motion blurred pictures because I want a crisp, clear view of the models face. So the shoot will be taken indoors with controlled lighting and the shutter speed will be high. CONTACT SHEET:

I'll do this by including face paint on the model and using LED lights in the background. I will also experiment with the technique light drawing.

Portraiture and identity project evaluation: Throughout this project I have developed my understanding of portrait and identity by looking at different artists work, emulating them and editing them. I have also looked thoroughly into different photographic techniques such as light drawing, motion blur and long exposure. These processes can help us to to present different movements, feelings and emotions which is a big part of our identity. Initially I researched the work of Christoffer Relander. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of texture, tone and contrast in my own photography examples. Inspired by their work, I created a series of emulations by taking pictures in black and white of faces and then of nature and going through a lengthy editing process on PIXLR. I investigated the technical processes of double exposure where two images are put over the top of one another and blended into one. Their work helped me understand the theme of portraiture and identity because it is linked to identity as the pictures I emulated often had faded away edges and were in black and white which helped me to see the more deeper intent behind Christoffer Relander's work. Then I researched the work of Denis Sheckler. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of colour, shape and pattern in my own photography examples. Inspired by their work, I created a series of emulations by doing a portraiture and photographing a models face with good lighting. Then I digitally edited them and added different elements. I investigated the technical processes of using photoshop to incorporate adding cartoon images or bright colours. Their work helped me understand the theme of portraiture and identity by getting to look at the bright colour and themes he uses in his work . It shows the happiness and joy peoples identity can have. This also reflects Denis Sheckler's personality clearly. Finally I researched the work of Maurizio Anzeri. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of line, texture and rhythm in my own photography examples. Inspired by their work, I created a series of emulations by sewing into shoots I had done. I investigated the technical processes of using a sewing machine to sew into the images. I also learnt how to laminate to create a sturdy base to sew into. Their work helped me understand the theme of portraiture and identity by demonstrating the idea is can be creative and messy. Personally, I feel that my most successful outcome for this project was my artist research and investigation because I feel that in order to successfully emulate an artists work, You need to have a full understanding on the processes and techniques they use. Following on from this, I think that after researching different techniques I have taken successful shoots with interesting subject matter. This means I have interesting and well shot subjects that are not overly cluttered. In conclusion, I think I have also made good use of lighting and colour and used a good amount of exposure and contrast. My areas for improvement going forward are annotating my contact sheets and I can improve this by adding more detailed notes so it is easier to identify which individual photos from my shoots were most successful and how I can make them even better. I also need to work on my digital editing skills, although they have massively improved since my last personal project.
