COMPONENT 1
Personal Projects : Portrait & Identity Definition: P ortrait photography, or portraiture, is a type of photography aimed toward capturing the personality of a person or group of people by using effective lighting, backdrops, and poses. A portrait photograph may be artistic or clinical. “Within every man and woman, a secret is hidden, and as a photographer, it is my task to reveal it if I can.” Yousuf Karsh
I find this quote inspirational because its saying that there is a secret in everyone and that everyone is different and may have different secrets that photographers try to reveal. It makes me want to make them show there true selves and who they are.
Mind Map
Early Inspirational Images Following the written mind map, I began to investigate portrait photography and identity examples. Below are the findings from this research. I feel the most inspirational image for me is number 4 top row. This picture is inspirational to me because its showing that you don't need to listen to anyone else's opinions and what they think. Its also showing that you should ignore and forget the negativity in the world and think of the positive side of life.

Professional Portraiture Workshop / Collaborative Shoot I found that the knowledge organiser helped me a lot for the workshop as the knowledge organiser I completed had plenty of information I found about light so it would give me a bit more understanding for the workshop. We did the shoot so it would give us a bit more understanding of set up, light and posture. The set up in the room was simple and not to much. We used a tripod for the DSLR camera for sturdiness, box lighting, umbrella to diffuse light. Lastly, a white back drop and chair. Because the eyes are a main feature for portraiture but when crossed out people don't know who that person is. Initials were used instead of the full names. During the shoot hand gel was used, people social distanced and students were told to be careful near the wires. From the shoot we learned a different variety of lightings that can be used while doing a shoot. From the shoot I experienced taking a professional shot.
Professional Portraiture Workshop / Contact Sheet
Professional Portraiture Workshop / Digital Editing First I cropped the image using the rule off thirds i then used the clone tool to remove the chair as the chair made the picture look less professional I then used the shape the create the white rectangle to cover the eyes.

Research and Investigation/Breaking the Rules Now that I have investigated on how professional photography is taken I will now be able to experiment myself, I will now look at different methods of making portraits which break the traditional methods outlined above.
Research and Investigation/Double and Multi Exposure Double exposure photography is a technique that layers two different exposures on a single image, combining two photographs into one. A similar technique, called a “multiple exposure,” is when you combine more than two exposures in a single image. A ‘multiple exposure’ is a type of photograph that is created by exposing the same frame of film to light more than once. Some of the first double exposure photos emerged during the
1860s

photographers.
To give their business a boost, they discovered how to make a portrait subject appear twice in a frame, as if they had an identical twin. In each of the pictures, the person was striking a different pose. Double or multiple exposure is a brilliant tool for photographers as it can present different sides of a subject through the same image.

Research and Investigation / Double & Multi Exposure / Initial Experiments Computer Initial Experiments / PIXLR
Image Evaluation In this experiment I think taking the shot /picture was one off my strengths as I knew what angles I needed to use to shoot the picture. I also like how you can still see the true tones of the models face coming through.I think I could improve by learning more about the tools on PIXLR and i personally feel like I could have done better but I guess if you try but don't succeed then try again.Doing this has made me learn how to overlay 1 picture on to another and making it look neatly presented and professional and I've also learnt about using double exposure and overexposure to my advantage to create a studio-like image. Research and Investigation / Double & Multi Exposure Sara Kbyrne
Reasons why I have chosen Sara Kbyrne is because her work shows nature and portrait. Her work makes me intrigued and also makes me want to try more of my own. In her photography it gives a meaning or a story which makes me want to find out more about the piece. I intend to emulate her work at school and home by taking lots of portrait pictures and nature/flower or tree pictures then overlay them onto each other. I will also intend to use a good white background for my portrait pictures and natural lighting. I will also intend to use Pixlr to edit my pictures and to make them look more emulated by her work. https://sarakbyrne.com
Research and Investigation / Double & Multi Exposure / Shoot Plan For this shoot, I am intending to go out onto the school field and shoot many photos of nature scenes. My shutter speed will be on priority and my camera will be set at 1/160. My f stop will be 2 and I will have a continuous setting on. I also have the intent of working with a classmate who will be the subject /model of my photos. We will first take photos of her on a plain white background, making it easier to edit and be able to emulate work, of Sara. After that's done, I will then take some shots from the field. Vantage points will be varied but many will be facing directly or to the side to avoid discomfort of the subject. The lighting will be natural so we are hoping the sun will be out. After taking these photos and arranging them onto a contact sheet, I intend to edit them together to emulate Sara Kbyrne's work.

Artist Investigation /Marcelo Monreal
For my artist investigation I have chosen Marcelo Monreal. His work inspires me because its all about the beauty in nature and humans. These 10 pictures off his extraordinary work caught my eye, reason for this is because they show that everyone is different in there own way. He uses a variety off vibrant colours and different flowers to represent the beauty side off nature. Marcelo Monreal is a Brazilian artist who creates the series of surreal portraits “Faces unbonded“. Marcelo makes impressive digital collages in which he manipulates the faces of contemporary icons and fashion models. Morcelo uses the technique off cracking skulls in the most beautiful way possible. Digitally splitting parts of models and celebrities faces (Christopher Walken and Kate Moss are among them), he fuses beautiful blooms with the broken shapes. In Monreal's opinon, people don't often show who they really are. Instead, they keep parts of their real selves hidden. I could emulate his work at home by maybe splitting my face or a family members face using eyeliner and then fill half off the face with flowers. Using my 4000d canon camera I would place that on my ring light stand to make it steady so then when the shoot has been taken the picture wont be blurry. I would then upload that picture onto pixlr and do some editing to make it look similar to Marcelo's work.

Shoot Plan / Marcelo Monreal This shoot is inspired by the portrait and identity based photographer Marcelo Monreal. His work caught my eye as his work is based on portraiture and nature. I'm excited to try out his techniques and make my own shoot based on his work. I plan for the shoot to take place against a plain wall and I also intend it to be near a window in the day so I have natural light. The props I'm intending to use are lightings such as a lamp to create a key light or whatever type of specific lighting I need to emulate his work. I will also use resources such as flowers, leaves and fruit to emulate his work further. The lighting I want to be bright enough but not to bright for there to be shadows seen. My subject will be front lit and the lighting will be a mix of natural and artificial. I intend to shoot with my DLSR 4000d canon camera with my kit lens. I intend to shoot with a shutter speed that will make my photos sharp and crisp. I'm also going to use a larger aperture f/22 to create a shallow depth of field and I'm going to use a slow shutter speed because I need to let in more light to get the high key look of his photos. Following the shoot plan I plan to digitally edit my images using Pixlr or snapseed, this is because I am going to create a colour affect on the background and lighten areas of the subjects face. To display my best edits I will be using photo funia to create digital frames to display for my website and physically I will display it on good quality paper and take pictures of me holding them before a dark background further in the style of his work.

Shutter Speed Workshops / Long Exposure / Motion Blur / Light Drawing What is Shutter Speed and Blur in Photography? Using a slower shutter speed will increase blur, while a faster shutter speed will reduce blur. The key is to find the shutter setting that allows your subject to appear sharp, but the background to appear blurred. This allows your camera to focus quickly on your moving subject.
Slow Shutter Speed Portrait Examples - creates a sense of movement, blur or dynamic motion
Fast Shutter Speed Portrait Examples - captures crisp details and freezes them in time
Photographic Techniques / Long Exposure What is Long Exposure in Portrait Photography? In simple terms, long exposure means that the camera stays open for a long time. Since the shutter stays open for a long time, it tends to record movements as blurry streaks. It's the perfect technique to use if you want to create surrealistic effects for your portraits.

Best Image Evaluation: This was my favourite image I edited. It gives us the impression that she wants to hide away from the camera. When editing the image I used adjustments and filter. Reason for this is because I didn't want to add too much editing because I wanted it to still look original. Overall, I think this image turned out great and is now my final favourite image from the shoot.
Photographic Techniques / Motion Blur What is Motion Blur in Portrait Photography? Motion blur is when a person purposely blurs the subject, creating blurred movement in an image. In our shoot, we used light to enhance the image and highlight the subject. To balance our images, we used a tripod and a timer to avoid any extra camera shake. We also used a bright light. Most of my images came out blurry ,on the other hand some came out looking effective.

For this picture I cropped it and replaced the background with black and then brightened the lights. For this picture I also kept the models face in the picture to give it a good look.
With this picture I cropped it but then only blurred the background to make it effective. est Image Evaluation: B This image is my favourite because the glow lights in the background are blurred out which makes the model stand out. I found that this work shop was fun to do but also experimental. Reason for this is because we had to experiment with were to move the glow sticks to give it that good effect. I think our pictures came out amazing and I would definitely do this again.
Photographic Techniques / Light Drawing What is Light Drawing in Portrait Photography? Light drawing is the photographic technique of using a moving light source, such as a flashlight, glow stick, light brush, or even a smartphone—to alter an image while taking a long exposure photograph.

Composition Design 1 What is the aim of this shoot? The feeling I want people to feel is a connection with my work. I want it to make them feel surprised and interested. My shoot will be done in school and my plan is to use someone as a model from either in school or family at home. The model will do different facial expressions to show emotion. Once I've done my shoot the pictures will then be edited using pixlr.
"I believe that this was the message that my mother wanted to tell me when she said that people are made of flowers. She always told me that people were good even when they did not seem so and that when they were bad, it was because they were afraid of being hurt first. Something like a shield or an armour. And this is why in my work I open people leaving them vulnerable and showing that there is beauty and courage in them."

What photographer and what technique do you want to combine for Composition 1: The photographer I want to do is Marcelo Monreal. Reason for this is because, his work shows different facial expressions and also different meanings. The technique I'm wanting to combine in my work is long exposure and double exposure. These techniques will make my photos look like Marcelo Monreals and this will also help me learn more about the techniques I'm wanting to use. Shoot plan: For my work I'm going to try and incorporate Marcelo Monreal's work and add some motion blur/ long exposure to make an effective piece of work that makes people feel connected with the emotions that the work is showing. The shoot will be taken place at school as I will be able to use a tripod from school and a white background cover. I will probably do my shoot mid day where there is enough sun. I will be using my Canon 4000d camera and a 50mm prime lens to take my shoot. To edit my pictures I will be using pixlr. I will also use a key light and rim light to capture a good lighting.

Composition 2 What is the aim of this shoot? My aim for my second shoot it to incorporate light projection with Sara Kbyrne's work. I want people to be able to see that nature is beautiful and I also want it to make people feel happy. My shoot will be done at school and I will be doing the shoot of myself as I don't have a model. I'm going to try and do different angles. These pictures will also be edited using pixlr.
"It’s no secret that I love to be outside and that big epic scenery is a huge inspiration for my photography, but a strong connection between two people inspires me more than any cliff or waterfall. I like people and I’m fascinated by their stories. Getting to witness real love every weekend and curating that story with my camera is one of the most fulfilling parts of shooting weddings. Being asked to document couples on their most important day is pretty damn amazing. So if I get a little caught up in the energy and emotion of it all, well, you’ll have to forgive me for loving what I do."

Portrait & Identity - CHELSEY PATERSON / GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY
Portrait and Identity Evaluation 1. Explain what IMPORTANT knowledge, skills and understanding you have gained this project. Throughout this project I have developed my understanding of portrait and identity. From this project I have gained many skills and a better understanding of different techniques. Some of the skills I have improved include physical editing, using colour to manipulate an image, the use of angle and better control of a tripod. Initially I researched the work of Marcelo Monreal as his colourful, nature like work inspired me. When I researched the work of Marcelo Monreals I learnt about some of the elements and principles and they were line, shape, texture, form, tone, colour, space and patter. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore these concepts in my own photography examples. Inspired by his work, I created a series of emulations by doing my own shoots. These shoots were done using my DSLR camera. To then develop my work I would edit them on Pixlr or I would digitally edit them to make them look like Marcelo Monreals. His work helped me understand the theme of portrait and identity because his work aloud me to challenge myself and explore how he creates his work and how I could try and emulate it. After researching the work of Marcelo Monreals I went on to looking at Sara Kbyrnes work to get some more inspiration so I could further improve my knowledge of portrait and identity. Although Sara and Marcelos work is completely different to each other it gave me a chance to look at a different photographers work.Sara Kbyrnes work inspired me because it felt like all her photos had a meaning / a story behind it, this then inspired me to try and do a shoot related to her work and maybe try and make a meaning behind my photos like what Sara does. Her work helped me understand more about what photographers try to do within there work example have meaning behind them. 2. What, do you feel, was the most successful outcome from the project? I feel like doing the research was the most successful for me during this project. Reason for this is because it helped me look at other photographers work and understand more about what portrait and identity is. Before doing research I didn't know much about portrait and identity, but also when researching I leant a lot about the photographers and how they do there work but also I learnt alot about the elements and principles of art. 3. What are your areas for improvement going forward and how could you overcome these weaknesses? I think I need to improve more on my editing as I found certain things hard to do when editing but also I would like to improve my contact sheets and add more detail. Progressing further, I need to continue to work on my annotations for my contact sheets as well. I also need to provide more description to them, and give them a more appropriate appearance, as they are somewhat messy and not so detailed. Overall, I just need to improve my editing skills and doing contact sheets.
