COMPONENT 1
Personal Projects : Portrait & Identity Definition: Portrait photography, or portraiture, is a type of photography aimed toward capturing the personality of a person or group of people by using effective lighting, backdrops, and poses. A portrait photograph may be artistic or clinical. “It’s one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it’s another thing to make a portrait of who they are.” Paul Caponigro
I find this quote inspirational to the project because I need to uncover the secret or hidden details in the people I would be photographing. I want to find their true self and their real identity.

Early Inspirational Images Following the written mind map, I began to investigate portrait photography and identity examples. Below are the findings from this research. I feel the most inspirational image for me is the last one as it shows less background. I like this as it draws the attention of the viewer to the main subject of the photo. I also like how the light is reflecting on the subject. Another images that I find inspirational is the last one on the first row. The subject has a mask on and the lighting used is bouncing of the mask.
Professional Portraiture Workshop / Collaborative Shoot My own prior research was done by watching two videos in class. One of the videos was about the key lighting in photography. In this video I had learnt the different lighting in photography. We also did a knowledge organiser with key terminology. Mr Dever is a professional freelance photographer. When he came to our class we photographed the year 11s who had missed their original shoot due to isolating for covid reasons. This was for a professional photo for their year book. In the photo shoot, we used natural light and soft boxes. We adjusted the lights as we took all the photos. For example if someone was wearing glasses we had to move the light over so that the light would not reflect on their glasses. Before the models went for their shoot we made them sanitize their hands. For confirmation they signed a paper with their name and signature son that we had their full consent. We also socially distanced them from the other students/models so that we were following covid rules. We made them aware of the wires and cables so they wouldn't trip and get injured. When the shoot was done we never put their name on the photos, instead we put their initials so it was completely private. We also crossed their eyes out. From this shoot I learnt that when photographing models you need their full consent and that you can't input any personal details (their name) onto the results. I also learnt that positioning your model is important: the way they are sat, making sure they are sat upright.

Professional Portraiture Workshop / Digital Editing To edit the year 11 yearbook photos, we used an online editing website called PIXLR. First, I cropped the image to a decent size, not too close to the head but not too faraway. I used the rule of thirds when doing this. Next, I used the clone tool to remove the chair so it is not in sight in the picture. I removed the unnecessary part of my image. Then I went onto using the magic wand lasso tool to select the background and make it look smoother and more effective. For the last part of my editing I used the blur filter to remove background defects. This was done so that the unnecessary parts of the image/background looked more professional. This was also to make sure there were no creases in the background.

Research and Investigation / Breaking the Rules Now that I have investigated how professional photography is taken within a school setting, I will now look at alternative methods of making portraits which break the traditional methods outlined above. I will begin by breaking the first rule, that a portrait must be of a single exposed face.
Research and Investigation / Double & Multi Exposure Double exposure photography is a technique that layers two different exposures on a single image, combining two photographs into one. A similar technique, called a “multiple exposure,” is when you combine more than two exposures in a single image. ome of the first double exposure photos emerged during the S 1860s as another source of revenue for photographers. To give their business a boost, they discovered how to make a portrait subject appear twice in a frame, as if they had an identical twin. In each of the pictures, the person was striking a different pose. Multiple exposures are of use to us in our portrait and identity project because it can give us two or more meanings in only one picture. It could symbolise two or more things. There could be more than one identity.

Image Evaluation In my photo I think my strengths were, editing on PIXLR and my understanding of the online editing software went very well. I had no problems using it and trying to edit my image. To improve I could go back on to PIXLR and edit my image more as it is under-exposed. From this process I learned how to use double exposure and how to edit an image. The skills I used in this shoot was on PIXLR. I used saturation to make my images black and white. I also cropped my image to my preferable size. I used opacity and filters to improve my image. I also used layering and many more tools to improve my image. During this editing I felt at ease and tranquil. It was also soothing and relaxing. Smartphone App Initial Experiments / Snapseed

Image Evaluation My strengths in this photoshoot was the detail in my double exposure. My background image was my own image and not from google this time. I feel like this time I could take my own image freely. I chose nature as it is very detailed and in the style of Sara and Cristopher. To improve this shoot I could've edited it on snapseed instead of weebly. From this photo shoot I have learned how to edit and image on my own at home without any help from my teacher or video tutorials. Skills I have used for this are all used on weebly. I used the cropping tool to have a decent sized picture. I also used saturation, opacity, adjustments, lasso tool, blend mode, exposure, transparency, negative space. During this process I felt confident as I have completed this process once before. I also felt relaxed and at peace as I found it enjoyable and fun. It was very soothing and I enjoyed it very much.

Why I have chosen this photographer? I have chosen this photographer because her work and photographs inspires me. Her exposure and focus are used brilliantly. The way she has used double exposure is very detailed and professional. It inspires to take my images just like hers and in the sama style for them to then come out very detailed.
Who are they? Wedding Photographer based in Portland Oregon. She is known for working in large outdoor landscapes and bringing a balance between people and nature.
YouTube video of Sara explaining double exposure. (link attached) Sara's own website. (link attatched)
Shoot Plan / Sara K Byrne My inspiration for this shoot is the work of Sara K Byrne. I want to focus on mainly the images that I have already shown (the gallery of 10 images above). My chosen location for this shoot is outdoors, as the sky can be used as a clear background and it will be rather easy to shoot. The location would need rather large and good amounts of lighting and a wide variety of plants and nature. It would very nice if the lighting was rather natural and bright, preferably taken day when it is sunny and less clouds. If this shoot cannot be done outside, then it should be taken inside with other lighting. A white background and dark clothing would be very useful. My equipment will be a DSLR cannon camera. My shutter speed will be very fast, around 1/200. My f/ will be around f/11.

Artist Investigation / Howard Schatz
I'm very curious and fascinated by the creative process. To see somebody take words, a line, a story and make another human being out of them is one of the most fascinating, unbelievable things.
Why this artist? I have chosen this artist because the images looked so powerful when I first viewed them. The main thing that caught my eye was the facial expressions. It was all natural and not forced or directed. Another thing that caught my eye was the fact that he took images of boxers. This inspired me because my brother is a boxer, so when it comes to recreating the images, it will be fairly easy for me to dp this. Who is he? Howard Schatz was born on the 30 July 1940. He is a contemporary photographer whose speciality is the exploration of the human form in photography. His work provides a detailed study in the structure and the physique of the human form, illustrating the body's shape, power, beauty, and motion. Why the quote? I chose this quote because it inspired me in many ways. It says how you can have your own story as a photographer but use somebody else to express it for you. Emotions can be powerful. Howard Schatz is famous for first establishing a following in the 1990s with two collections of underwater photography, Water Dance and Pool Light. With H2O, Schatz takes the magic of weightlessness and the beauty of dance to new heights.

How will I emulate their work? To emulate Howard Schatz's work, I will be taking my own photographs in the same way and style as him. I will make the images black and white but will make sure they stand out and are powerful. I will use people in my family to recreate similar images. My aim is to make my powerful. I will make the background black so there are no distractions. I could do this using Pixlr. I will use natural light but also a flash. For props, I would want to use boxing equipment, e.g- gloves. This will be used to recreate the boxing images.
PHOTOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES - PORTRAITURE PHOTOGRAPHY Portrait photography is about capturing the essence, personality, identity and attitude of a person utilising backgrounds, lighting and posing. While this definition may sound simple, portrait photography can be one of the most challenging forms of photography to master. The goal is to capture a photo that appears both natural and prepared to allow the subject’s personality to show through.
Shoot Plan / Howard Schatz I have taken inspiration from Howard Schatz. I was motivated by Schatz’s use of tonal contrast and drawn to the dramatic play of detail and expression. I intend to shoot indoors and will need to make sure lighting is controlled. Additionally, I will use one key light from an angle that is suitable for my picture to be taken correctly in order to cast harsh shadows across the subject matter. For props, I will be using my camera to take the image and a desk lamp. I will also try and use more lighting if needed (maybe another desk lamp). When considering lighting I will experiment with high-key and low-key and do futher editing on the online editing software that I have already mentioned, Pixlr. The equipment used will be a DSLR camera, kit lens, remote flash, soft box and tripod, this is used to make sure the camera is not shaking during the process of taking my image. The camera will be set to aperture priority mode so I can experiment with smaller apertures for a larger depth of field, thus adding more detail and structure. I'll then apply a grid shape to the image and then recolour a few squares to recreate Schatz's style. As Pixlr is an online editing software, I am able to edit a range of details such as the exposure, cropping and contrast. There are many more things to edit aswell as that.

Shutter Speed Workshops / Long Exposure / Motion Blur / Light Drawing What is Shutter Speed and Blur in Photography? Slower shutter speeds like 1/60 second and slower cause a blurring effect. If you want to take a picture using a slow shutter speed, it is best to mount the camera on a tripod and use image stabilisation to reduce the chance of any unwanted camera movement.
Slow Shutter Speed Portrait Examples - creates a sense of movement, blur or dynamic motion
Fast Shutter Speed Portrait Examples - captures crisp details and freezes them in time

Photographic Techniques / Long Exposure hat is Long Exposure in Portrait Photography? W Long exposure refers to taking a photograph with shutter speeds of between a few seconds to a few hours and is a great technique to capture striking landscape photos. First, you will need to secure your camera on a tripod. Hand holding a camera with a shutter speed of even 1 second will produce a blurred image. Long exposure photography is the art of using a slow shutter speed to capture the cumulative effects of time passing – in one image. This technique allows you to capture clouds as they travel across the sky or the lights of traffic as they move along the highway.

Shoot Plan:
Portrait & Identity Art Evaluation: Throughout this project I have developed my understanding of portrait and identity by first having an experience to be part of a professional portraiture workshop/collaborative shoot. I then edited these images. I then researched double and multi exposure. I then did a phot shoot in the style of double and multi exposure. I edited these images on pixlr. After this I researched an artist who took images in the style of multi and double exposure. I then did more artist investigations that had different styles and who's images inspired me in different ways.
Different artists I researched: The first artist I researched was Sara K Byrne. The things that inspired me about Sara's work was the style and the way she presented her images. Her focus and exposure are used expertly. I loved the way she used double and multi exposure in her images. They are very professional and are rather detailed. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of line, shape and harmony in my own photography examples. Inspired by their work, I created a series of emulations by taking my own shoot in the style of this artist. I took time to try and do my work the same as or try and copy Sara's work. I investigated the technical processes of double and multi exposure. Sara used nature for the background image. I also used nature so it is in the style of her work. She also used a portrait. I did the same thing. Their work helped me understand the theme of portrait and identity as the way she presented her images was very effective. The way the images merged together was brilliantly done. This made me understand the beauty behind portrait and identity. Then I researched the artist Howard Schatz. Howard's work inspired me as the way he placed things in his images were very successful. Through studying this artist it helped me explore the concepts of the amount of detail I should have in my images. Texture was used effectively in his images. I was extremely influenced by his work. Howard's work made my understanding of portrait and identity. It helped me realise that there's more to portrait and identity. Personally, I feel as if my first artist investigation was the most successful part of my research. I feel this because I felt joyful and impressed by the work I produced. I was impressed because before researching about this I wasn't aware of what I could produce as I didn't know how or what to produce, but by the end of it I knew exactly what to do. To improve my work, I could finish my shoots. I feel as if, if I finished my shoots, I'd have an even more understanding of portrait and identity. I need to either add more contact sheets or improve my contact sheets. I could do this by adding more detail and annotations on to it. I could even have a better way of laying out my work and making it look even more immaculate. I could improve my editing so it looks more professional and I the style of the artist I chose.
