Portrait and Identity Personal Project: 2

Personal Projects / Portrait & Identity Definition : Portrait photography, or portraiture, is a type of photography aimed toward capturing the personality of a person or group of people by using effective lighting, backdrops, and poses. A portrait photograph may be artistic or clinical. “There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment.” Robert Frank

I find this quote inspirational to the project because the humanity is the essence of the photograph. Finding the humanity in someone and creating an image out of it is inspiring.

Early Inspirational Images F ollowing the written mind map, I began to investigate portrait photography and identity examples. Below are the findings from this research. I feel the most inspirational image for me is either the first one on the second row or middle one on the second row. I think the first one on the second row is inspiring because it looks elegant and simple yet so complex. I think the middle one on the second row is inspiring is because the lighting, the different colours and the simplicity of the image is easy on the eye.

Professional Portraiture Workshop / Collaborative Shoot Before the shoot, I created a knowledge organiser and also watched a video about the lighting. The video explained the different types of light boxes and how they work together (and on their own) to look in an image, and the knowledge organiser explained the different types of lighting and how an image looks when the different types of lighting are used in an image.

In the top image is a freelance photographer called Mr Deever. He showed us how to set up the the lighting to create a professional looking photo. The images we took were for the Year 11 yearbook and we worked with others to help the pupil feel comfortable but also have good posture.

In the shoot, we had natural lighting but we used soft boxes to enhance the brightness of the image such as key and back lighting and rearranges them as we went along.

Before taking the pictures, we asked the pupils to sign their name on a piece of paper and then sanitise their hands while socially distancing from others. We also informed them about wires on the floor so that there wouldn't have anyone falling over.

Professional Portraiture Workshop / Contact Sheet

Professional Portraiture Workshop / Digital editing Explain what you did to edit the photograph: Firstly, I cropped the image to get rid of the background and to get rid of most of the chair and her legs and to also make sure that the subject is in the centre of the picture. Then, I sued the clone tool to get rid of the last bit of the chair. Next, I used the lasso tool on the magnetic setting to get rid of unnecessary bits like hair and then I would use the blur tool to blur the background to get rid of any blemishes.

Research and Investigation / Breaking the Rules Now that I have investigated how professional photography is taken within a school setting, I will now look at alternative methods of making portraits which break the traditional methods outlined above. I will begin by breaking the first rule, that a portrait must be of a single exposed face.

Research and Investigation / Double and Multi Exposure Double or Multi exposure is the superimposition of two or more exposures to create a single image, and double exposure has a corresponding meaning in respect of two images. The exposure values may or may not be identical to each other. In the early ages of photography, photographers would create double exposure images by capturing an image on a bit of film, and then when taking the second image, they would use the same slide of film to create either a spiritual ghost image, or an image of someone that looks to be standing with a twin. Double exposure images are important to us in our study of portraiture and identity because when making an image of double exposure, the second layer normally has some sort of meaning and significant importance to the person in the photograph making it have more personality and identity. Contemporary Double and Multi Exposures:

Research and Investigation / Double and Multi Exposure / Initial Experiments Computer Initial Experiments / PIXLR

Overall, the experiment went quite well. My strengths were that of using my own knowledge of transparency depth and giving it a richer tone. My weakness was that of neatness of masking the overlay image. I also thought it interesting to play around with the levels of transparency to give the image different effects. I think in my final image that it strikes the right balance between the portrait layer and the overlay. The improvements I think I could make would be to adjust the overall neatness of cutting out around the edge of the overlay. Upon reflection, I found that the final image is rather flat so the improvement I would make would be to add depth and colour. to the overlay to give it a more 3 dimensional look.

Overall the experiment went reasonably well. I used my own images as the overlays, I thought this would give this more of a personal touch. Out of the four images, I think image four works the best, but this was influenced by my liking for the overlay image. But also, the transparency was the lowest out of all four making the plant on the overlay more vivid. My weaknesses were that of struggling with the transparency of the overlay and the cropping of the images. The overlay on image one was really atmospheric picture, however, this was not reflected in the transparency. Overall, I think I learned a lot about transparency levels and cropping images, and hopefully this will aid me in future projects. Image Evaluation: The strengths with the experiment would be that I was able to create an image by editing and creating double exposure. The things that could be improved could be that I could get better use of the cut out mask tool, the lasso tool the opacity of the layers. What I learned from the process would be that I need to get more used to using the different tools on PIXLR and digital editing. Smartphone App Initial Experiments / Snapseed

Photographic Techniques / Portraiture Photography Good portrait photographers are able to capture the personality and emotion of people around them, along with earning money via wedding photography, senior portraits, family photography sessions ect. There are many genres within portraiture photography, here are some below:

Research and Investigation / Double & Multi Exposure / Christoffer Relander “Reality can be beautiful, but the surreal often absorbs me. Photography to me is a way to express and stimulate my imagination. Nature is simply the world. With alternative and experimental camera techniques I am able to create artworks that otherwise only would be possible through painting or digital manipulation in an external software.” — Christoffer Relander

The reason why I have chosen Christoffer Relander is because I saw his work to be really compelling as he use monochrome in the images that he creates. I also saw his images to be inspiring because they show a lot of feeling and emotion. This is inspiring because each image he creates shows a different story through the different layers superimposed on the image creating the double exposure image. Christoffer Relander was born in 1986 in a small town of Ekenäs, near Helsinki he has always been drawn towards art and studied Graphic design and Visual Art and then in 2008 he became fascinated with the art of photography. Christoffer Relander is a self-taught photographer and especially known for his multiple exposures, an in-camera technique that he has used in most of his projects since 2010. To emulate this at home I would use lighting such as soft boxes or natural lighting to make it a high key image so the face layer and background of the image will be white. The overlay of nature will be taken outside so that I can get many images of trees and leaves. The props I would need are a person, a bright day, a camera and nature. I will use PIXLR to edit my images and create double exposure.

Research and Investigation / Double & Multi Exposure / Shoot Plan

I have drawn inspiration from Christoffer Relander because I find the images he creates are very creative and artistic. I think this is because creating images like his is an experimental process which requires a lot of imaginative thinking. I plan for the shoot to take place inside and outside. The shoot will take place inside because of the layer of the face and will also be taken outside because of the layer of nature such as the leaves and trees. The props I intend to use are a camera, a person, nature and a bright day because the image of the face is taken in high key. The lighting conditions I will require are a bright/sunny day because the images have to be taken in high key. I will experiment using high key because the images Christoffer Relander are taken in high key. And also the images are easier to edit when the background is white. My subject will be front lit so there is no shadows on the person. The lighting will be soft box / natural light as the face image will be taken inside and will need lighting from a soft box so there is no shadows on the person The natural lighting will be needed for the layer with the trees and leaves. I will adjust the white balance on my camera to make the images look brighter and make the background daylight look more fluorescent therefore making it easier to edit. It will also make the cloudy sky look more like a blank white background.

5. Then, I used the brush tool again but with a lighter opacity to give the images a faded affect to emulate the style of Christoffer Relander.

Final Image / Christoffer Relander Final Image Evaluation: Overall this experiment was a learning experience for me. Using Pixlr to edit pictures in the style of Christoffer Relander. My strengths were that I could edit the image to a good standard by adding the overlay and removing blemishes from the background. My improvements were that I could remove some of the overlay in a better place and then be able to make the image look more angelic.

Artist Investigation / Lindsay Adler “With no particular personal twist on it, you are less likely to be remembered” – Lindsay Adler

To begin my portrait and identity investigation, I will starts off with the photographer Lindsay Adler. I was drawn to her work because of the mix of colours in the image such as the pink and blue which really makes the image catch your eye. Lindsay is a 36 year old portrait and fashion photographer based in Manhattan, New York. Her editorials have appeared in Bullett Magazine, Zink Magazine and Fault. She has contributed to photo publications Professional Photographer, Rangefinder Magazine, and Popular Photography. I chose this quote because I feel it really sums up her work as it has its own personal twist on portraiture as she uses all different colours, shiny and blurred. I could emulate Lindsay's work through using different coloured sheets of plastic covering soft boxes creating the different coloured lights and putting up a roll of paper for background.

Shoot Plan I have drawn inspiration from Lindsay Adler because her work is so inspirational and I love the fact that her images are so vivid and vibrant. I plan for the shoot to take place in a dark room with no lighting or in a room at night time with a dark background to enable the the person in the image to stand out. The props I intend to use are a tripod to stabilise the camera, a dark coloured backdrop, soft boxes with coloured filters over the top of them. The lighting conditions I will require are soft boxes, total darkness other than the soft boxes. I will experiment using low key because the kind of images Lindsay Adler takes use low key photography. My subject will be side / front lit as Lindsay Adlers' images are taken with lighting from the sides and sometimes from the front. The lighting will be artificial light / soft box as you can change the colour of artificial light to make it have more colour which makes it more eye catching. I intend to shoot with a canon 4000D using a standard lens on a tripod because the images will end up blurry. When considering exposure, I intend to shoot with a fast shutter speed of 1/200 to create a crisp sharp image. I intend to use a larger aperture f/5 for a shallow depth of field. I intent to use a fast shutter speed because I would like to capture the sharpness and crispness of the image. Following the shoot, I plan to digitally edit my images using PIXLR. This is because to correct the images in any way. I plan to display my best edits by showing them on my website.

Best Image Evaluation: Overall this exercise was exciting as it was a new experience for me. I feel this has taught me a lot about shutter speed and aperture control. The improvements I think I could do would be to make the circles more centred and in frame, but personally I like the fact that they're not in frame. I also like the fact that the background is fully black whereas on the others, there is some light in the background. This is also important as it really makes the light stand out to become the main focal point. I think that identity and mood are expresses in this image through the use of the colours making the image more bright and colourful.

Composition Design 1 What is the aim of this shoot? The aim of this shoot is to express feelings through colour, facial expressions and physique. This is portrayed through the high glamour and perfection that are typically seen in glossy magazines and on social media. I am interested in the effect of

such imagery and will explore this for composition 1.

What photographer and what technique do you want to combine for Composition 1: The photographer I have chosen for composition 1 is Lindsay Adler and the technique I have chosen is gel colouring. I have chosen these because I find them inspiring and I think they look like really beautiful and the colours used make the model look three dimensional. There are 2 ways of creating gel portraits. Firstly this can be done with lighting during the shoot and secondly, colour filters can be applied post shoot on pixlr. I intend to investigate both methods and make a decision in my shoot plan. Below are two tutorials that explain these methods.

From my shoot, I chose this image as on of the best because I think it really captures the essence of Lindsay Adler's images and incorporates some skills that she may use. From my shoot, I chose this image as one of the best because I think it uses some of the factors shown in Lindsay's images and I think it has some aspects of mystery and obscurity due to the dark side of the image and how the models facial expressions look questionable and controversial.

From the shoot, I chose this image as one of my best and favourite images because of the hidden dark side in the image. It is the same as the last image but more subtle and less obvious. This is due to the colour of the LED lights being brighter and therefore making the whole image brighter. POWERED BY https://marissagcsephotographypghs.weebly.com/portrait--identity.html

Portraiture and Identity / Evaluation Initially I researched the work of Christoffer Relander who used the technique of double exposure. In his images, he would take pictures from nature, such as trees and leaves, and would edit them on top of an image of a person. I was inspired by his work as I think it looked really graceful and elegant and really took the theme of double exposure photography and took it to the next level. I really loved emulating his images as I felt it was really broadening my mindset about the different types of photography. His images can be described using the words 'appealing' as the viewers eye is led straight to the image. His images can also be described as 'natural' due to the fact that his images use nature and overlay it onto an image of a person. His images use high key photography to enable the image to look more angelic and heaven-like. The important knowledge, skills and understanding I have learnt during this topic would be the use of double exposure, the use of heavily editing an image and high key photography. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore key concepts of editing images heavily using Pixlr to make the images emulate Christoffer Relanders work. I feel the most successful outcome from this project would probably be the edits from my shoot. This is because I think the images look quite similar to Christoffer Relanders due to the heavy editing and the way the images are edited. I also think this is because I feel my images are well laid out and well edited. I think the least successful outcome of this project would be where the white hole is on both of my images. I think this because I feel it makes my images look weird and dodgy.

Portrait & Identity - MARISSA TAYLOR / GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY

The next photographer I studied was Lindsay Adler who uses the technique of gel colouring. In her images, she would take pictures using a variety of vividly coloured lights to give the effect of gel colouring. I was inspired by her work as I felt her images looked so vibrant and full of colour and I loved the way she used the technique of gel colouring. I really loved emulating her work as I felt it was really expanding my knowledge of the different types of portraiture photography. Her images can be described using the words 'intense' and 'vivid' as the colours she uses are so deep and vibrant that they just so attention grabbing. Her images can also be described using the words 'eye-catching' and 'striking' as the colours are so noticeable that they just pop out and catch your eye. Her images are more low key as they are quite dark. This gives the effect of her images being restful and dynamic. I investigated the technical processes of creating her work. They include the use of strong, deep colour and contrast of the colours. The important knowledge, skills and understanding I have learnt during this topic would be the use of gel colouring and how to balance the colours in image to make it look eye-catching and balanced. . Through studying this artist, I was able to explore key concepts of colour balance and how it effects how the image looks. I feel the most successful outcome of these images is that they have a well balanced use of colour which make the images look closer to the photographers. I also feel my images are well laid out and well edited. I feel the least successful outcome of this project would be the amount of image I produced. I think that I could have produced more images. This would have made my portfolio look better as it would have had more evidence and understanding of the photographer and the technique she uses. Finally, I briefly studied the work of Matthieu Bourel who uses the technique of physically/hand manipulating/editing his images, he would take images and then physically edit them to give a different effect to the image. I was inspired by his work as I felt his images were quite basically edited but it gives of a very cool effect. His images can be described using the words 'dynamic' and 'repeated' due to the fact that most of his images have been cut out then stuck back down next to it to give off a repeated effect. The important knowledge, skills and understanding I have learnt during briefly looking over this photographer and the technique would be the use and effect of physically editing your images. Through a quick investigation of this photographer, I was able to explore key concepts such as editing images by hand and the effect it gives.
