Urban Environments Personal Project: Urban Environments An urban area is the region surrounding a city. Most inhabitants of urban areas have nonagricultural jobs. Urban areas are very developed, meaning there is a density of human structures such as houses, commercial buildings, roads, bridges and railways.

"In the urban areas, we have focused on infrastructure roads, telecommunications, power." - Meles Zenawi “You can't understand a city without using its public transportation system.” ― Erol Ozan “Cities are not only a place where we live but also a place where humanity evolves.” ― Planners Realm

" Urban area" can refer to towns, cities and suburbs.

Initial Research:

Overall Theme for Urban Environment / London: For this project, I intend to assign an overall theme, and base most of my urban photography on London, rather than Lancashire. I have an interest for London, especially its transport, so I want to work with that environment. There is also a lot more architecture in smaller spaces, and I feel as if I could get a lot of creative shots from the atmosphere. With all the lights around it as well, it is a great place for night photography! Compared to where I have been taking most of my shoots, London is a lot more busy, and it will challenge me to work and think fast in quick-paced environments. This is an image of a London Underground station. This one seems fairly modern, but the architecture varies depending on which station you are at, and the appearances of the station can vary greatly depending on where you are.

I personally believe that photographs hold a lot more value and meaning if you are passionate about what you are taking the pictures of - hopefully, the outcome of this project will be a positive one, and my images can have a lot interpreted about them.

Artist Linked to Overall Theme / David Gutierrez: "Starting with two to three lines originally, London Underground has expanded into 11 lines, serving 270 stations. When travelling with London Underground, it is obvious that it has been a unique character in terms if architectural design. Some stations have been rejuvenated entirely and had been transformed into sophisticated and modern architectural design and engineering, and they have evolved into an art form like. This series of photography capture the essence of what London Underground means to the London commuter. I'm sure I am not the only photographer to find London Underground as an architectural subject." I have taken an interest in this photographer because he is London based, and has a series of photos connected to the London Underground, an area I intend to take photos of as part of the Urban Environment project. He also works with different kinds of photography to do with urban places too. He takes a variety of photographs in different environments and times. I believe his work could be deemed useful for future artists I go to view for inspiration on this project. I want to look further into his "Tube" series to capture the essence of the London Underground and what it is like to commute on it. I am passionate about the Underground, and have a few places in mind that could make good photographs.

David Gutierrez / Shoot Plan: For this shoot, I am intending to take shots while travelling around London. Because this artist takes shots in London Underground stations, I am aiming to take the shots on the London Underground when I stay down in the capital between the 11th and 14th of February. London Underground has a lot of artificial lighting, so I will be dependent on that. I will likely be taking shoots around the Hammersmith & City line between Euston Square and Hammersmith, though I may take a few shots around Euston too, as well as any other shots on routes I may take, depending on how busy it is. My location will depend on convenience and how busy a place is, so I may just end up taking a few photos and not a properly arranged shoot. The location in the stations is likely to be the station platforms and on the trains themselves. This is because they are easy locations to shoot from, and it is easier to stand still or be seated to capture the images rather than disrupt other commuters; they can also be less busy as people go to different platforms, though that does not make much of a difference in London. The stations underlined are ones I know I will definitely be passing by, whether by being in the stations or passing them on the train. The camera I use will also be dependent on the scenarios that fold within the station. If a station is incredibly busy or prone to pickpockets, I am likely to use my mobile camera, Motorola E30, as it is compact, and would be easy to travel around with. The settings I'd use on this phone is it's 'Pro-Mode' and I'd wish to lower the exposure slightly, and have the ISO on auto mode. If a station is less crowded and I have a bit of time, I will use the Nikon D3200, with ISO on auto, aperture priority mode, auto-focus, a standard kit lens. Both POWERED BYcameras would be handheld. https://aminagcsephotographypghs.weebly.com/urban-environment.html

In the image provided with the shoot plan, I have underlined stations I know I will definitely pass by at the least but I may pass more if I travel on the Northern and District lines. I may get shots on these two depending on what is most convenient to pass through. These shots will also be taken on various days at various times between the 11th and the 14th of February. This will allow the opportunity to get unique shots, and take advantage of different stations, as well as the lighting I may see coming through the windows when the train is not underground.

David Gutierrez / Shoot / Best Images:

David Gutierrez / Shoot / Final Image: I believe this shot was particularly effective because in addition to being able to see the architecture of the station platform in frame, the bold, iconic colours of the underground create contrast amongst the environment. Using PIXLR I have increased the exposure slightly and increased the contrast, while slightly lowering the saturation of everything but the train, to create a cooler atmosphere. I believe these edits have worked well due to the layering of the image, and the contrast it further brings alongside the cleaner setting. For the train platform I used the mask setting to separate and paste it onto a separate layer. I used the newer layer to decrease the saturation of the platforms, giving it a futuristic look. Then I proceeded to attempt to remove the arm along the side, but in Euston Square, Hammersmith & City Line, Eastbound Platform:

the end I particularly liked to look of it as I felt it added another

Nikon D3200, Auto-focus, Aperture Priority, Handheld, ISO Auto, Standard Kit

layer to the image, and added more to the urban environment theme I was going for.

Lens.

With this shoot, I like the layering of the image. I like the pillar by the train and how the train is behind it. I also appreciate the way the walls close in, creating a frame as the train departs. It allows the roof to seem like some form of foreground as the cooler tones eventually meet warmer ones, bringing you to the subject of the photo: the train itself. It makes for an effective urban environment and captures an area that normally would have been fairly busy.

London Photography Trip - October 2021: In October 2021, I had the opportunity to take a trip to London and visit the Victoria & Albert Museum as well as the Tate Modern. We were able to capture various images, some of which feel completely different to the lives we live up north. We used a train to travel down, the Underground to travel around London, and we also walked around as well. I tried capturing images of buildings and unique architecture, but there were some elements of the trip that also stood out such as how accustomed the animals in Hyde Park were to humans, water scenery - especially around the River Thames, the clouds, and nature too. There were a lot of photographs taken on the trip, though not all of them could be connected to the theme of Urban Environments. For this shoot, I took my images on a Nikon D3200 that was handheld throughout the day. I was mostly reliant on natural lighting. The shots were taken with auto-focus and aperture priority mode with the ISO also being on auto. We visited numerous areas, and so there was not just one setting for these images. This is a collection of images I shot while on this trip. The contact sheet does not contain every photograph taken on the trip, as there were a lot of them; I think I removed around 200 shots, mostly errors and personal shots with people who may not want their faces disclosed on here.

London Photography Trip / Best Images:

London Photography Trip / Final Image: In this image, I like the shallow depth of field. It is complimented by the strong shadows that are underneath the bridge. I feel as though the bridge, slowly disappearing into the distance makes for an effective subject, and takes up a significant proportion of the image, but not too much that the photo becomes dull or feels as though there is an obstruction. I slightly adjusted the exposure, but I did not deem it necessary to do a lot of tweaking, because I like the industrial atmosphere the shot already provides. (Unfortunately, this image keeps appearing in poor quality whenever I try to upload it to Weebly.)

London English Trip - December 2021: In December 2021, I had the opportunity to take a trip to London, and visit areas such as Covent Garden and Camden. We used a coach to travel around, and we were out during the brighter hours of the day, as well as the later hours. This made for effective photographs and allowed me to experiment with night photography some more. I tried capturing images of buildings and unique architecture, but also wanted to capture what some of the night life was like, and smaller details that wouldn't normally be the subject of a photo. My images were taken around the Strand and Covent Garden. For this shoot, I used my Nikon D3200, and had it on auto-focus as well as aperture priority mode. My ISO was on auto and the camera was handheld. I was reliant on the natural lighting as well as the flourescent lighting around me. The shots were taken at varying times of the day on the 11th December. This is a collection of images I shot while on this trip. Some images were removed for general mistakes, and to shorten the contact sheet. POWERED BY

London English Trip / Final Image: I particularly like this image because of the lights and reflections scattered around the image, as well as the composition of the photo. There are a lot of items in the frame and there is a warm-ish atmosphere. This image was taken at the Covent Garden Christmas Market. I was stuck in a slow moving human traffic jam, and so I started taking lots of pictures of random things. Just as the pace started picking up, I took this shot. It was a candid photo and turned out to be one of my favourite shots ever taken. The layering in this photograph makes me very happy. The large baubles are hidden behind lights, plants and signs and the look is very effective. This shot gives me a sense of nostalgia.

Artist Investigation / Daido Moriyama: HOME

"I've never felt that I should conform to any particular set of rules." "Making a definitive declaration of intent or meaning kills the photograph." "I realised later in the darkroom when I printed the image how amazing the dog's expression is. Snapshots are all about an instant moment and this dog instantly became a part of me. I am actually honoured to be compared with that dog." "When I take photographs, my body inevitable enters a trancelike state. Briskly weaving my way through the avenues, every cell in my body becomes as a radar, responsive to the life of the streets... If I were to give it words, I would say: "I have no choice... I have to shoot this... I can't leave this place for another's eyes... I have to shoot it... I have no choice." An endless, murmuring refrain." Daido Moriyama is a street photographer in Japan. He was born in 1938, and works with traditional and modern streets. He uses high contrast and his images are often grainy, making them stand out among other photography pieces. I am particularly interested in his work because he has no true intent with his photography, and I think that the high contrast on street photography works really well. here are multiple books he has made with his photography, an example being The World Through My Eyes, and his work can often T be viewed in galleries around Tokyo - where he is based.

Artist Investigation / Daido Moriyama / SEMI Analysis: My chosen photographer is Daido Moriyama and the title of this image is "Carousel". The genre of this photograph is street photography. In this photo, the first thing you see is the carousel, but there is a specific section of the photo that stands out: the black silhouette, just off from the centre of the photo. The lights also stand out. Moriyama's work is often done while walking, and generally does not have a definite subject, just what he wants to shoot. The photograph has been taken while the carousel was moving and while Moriyama was moving, resulting in the subjects being blurred, however you can still see what the photo is of, and still still imagine what it would look like when stationary. This image is very high in contrast - one of the 7 visual elements of art. It is the strongest element in the image because some areas aren't as visible as others, which is why the lights on the carousel stand out so much. The photographer uses this element well because it is difficult to tell what the subject of the image is, when most areas are underexposed or overexposed. Moriyama's images also contain a lot of motion as a key element. This photo contains a lot of motion as the carousel is moving around, and so are the subjects attached to it. You can see the motion because the handles around the carousel are blurred, particularly the horse the silhouette is sitting on. The photo has been taken from a short distance so the carousel is taking up a vast majority of the image. It has been taken at an angle too. This could mean that the carousel could be the focal point of the image. The image is angled, which results in the child's silhouette being very close to the centre of the image, and the overexposure leads attention to the lights, which contrasts the silhouette. By doing this, the eyes trail the lights that have an abrupt lead to the dark figure.

The photo has been taken in natural lighting, and the camera being held in the photographer's hand. The settings of the camera are HOME COMPONENT 1 monochrome, and the focus would be manual, with underexposure and overexposure, and a slow shutter speed to help with the blur. This creates an fast-paced atmosphere, and that gives the feeling you are in that image, and life is moving around you. To emulate this photo I would edit my images into monochrome, take images while walking (the angle wouldn't be straight), find moving objects to shoot, alter my camera settings to high exposure and manual focus, and lower my shutter speed. Additionally, it would be beneficial to research achieve both overexposure and underexposure in the same image. I see Moriyama's work to show the rush and pace of an urban environment, because of how quick his photography is taken; however Daido Moriyama does not have any direct intentions for his photos. He says "Making a definitive declaration of intent or meaning kills the photograph." and so the meanings of the images are up to the viewer to interpret.

Artist Investigation / Daido Moriyama / Shoot Plan: To emulate Moriyama's urban photography, I am aiming to take random photos while walking around the city, I am headed to. I want to keep my work open, and so I will not just be sticking to the idea of streets but modern architecture too. I think my photographs will be successful if I have a slow shutter speed, and I use my camera handheld, Nikon D3200. I will be using a standard kit lens and have my ISO on auto. As the photographer does not have any clear techniques for his photography, and just takes shots of what is appealing in his eyes, I will be doing the same, while also incorporating images that I think are similar Daido Moriyama does not have any clear techniques, and to the ones he takes too. he is open about this, however, I want to make sure I can After taking the images, and determining which ones should be edited, I get the settings right to successfully create the motion blur will change them with PIXLR into monochrome. If there is a stable shot while walking around, like in the video above. that I like, I will be using PIXLR to make it look like there was motion blur.

Artist Investigation / Daido Moriyama / Final Image: I believe this is my most successful image because like Moriyama's work, my shot is overexposed, monochrome and captures a random shot taken in the moment. I didn't do a lot of digital editing for this investigation with the exception of changing the images to monochrome - this was because my I wanted to practice shooting randomly, and Moriyama's shots are not supposed to be organised and neat in the collection I was looking at. The small adjustments were made in PIXLR E. I believe this image could have been improved if I had taken this shot at a different angle but the image did turn out well for what is was.

Artist Investigation / Sergio Castiglione: Sergio Castiglione is an Argentine photographer and architect. He has exhibited his work in in many areas of the world including Argentina, where his is from, Italy, the USA, Canada and other places. He mainly focuses on urban exploration and architecture photography. He visited over two hundred cities all over the world documenting constructions and historic landmarks.

Why this photographer? Castiglione's work changes, depending on the kind of shoot he is doing. I really like how varied his photography is, using reflections, combining photos taken at different times of day, cropping images, or just simply taking shots. He shoots at different times of day, and the architecture in his photographs can be really unique.

Artist Investigation / Sergio Castiglione / SEMI Analysis: My chosen photographer is Sergio Castiglione and there doesn't seem to be a title for this image, however, this is a part of his "El revés de lo cotidiano" set (which translates to something like "The Reverse of Everyday"). This set was uploaded to Behance on 20th December 2014. The genre of this photograph is urban landscapes. In this picture, I can see a lamp-post, and a window behind it with a reflection of a colourful building. There is also some colour in a plant on the lower corner of the image, but everything else is grey and dull. The lamp-post in the foreground initially catches the eye because complies with the rule of thirds. After viewing the light source, the background, if not already apparent, becomes more visible to the eye, once again, balanced with the rule of thirds. Castiglione has taken a slightly slanted point of view; this perspective is particularly effective because it does not look as if it is slanted, and deceives the eye into believing it is looking at a direct, straight-forward image. There are various elements used in Castiglione's work: for instance, two distinctive ones are the shapes and colour in his work. The These are the settings used for this shot, as well as a colour pallet, in addition to the other pieces of equipment that were implemented into the final product.. The image is very vibrant and there is a wide aperture, which assists in capturing light for the image, however this shot also has dark areas. For instance, a side of the window seems to be underexposed on the right hand side, probably due to the shadow from the wall, as well

colours are very vibrant and there are many shapes like the square windows in the background. The image has been taken from a moderated distance to incorporate the tree into the image, and also add more dark into the image, however the composition remains the same and so the lamp post is the main subject of the photo. This photo was taken with natural lighting, and it allows the lines to be more apparent in the imagery. I feel the photo conveys a sense of warmth, despite the cool greys there. This is because of how the buildings reflected are colourful and apply a cheerful feeling into the image. I find this relevant to the project theme because when we think of urban places and architecture, we often think of cold colours and steel and blues, but the colour in this image is not all that. His images of bridges at night also interest me.

as the window's reflection.

Artist Investigation / Sergio Castiglione / Shoot Plan: For this shoot, I intend to take various images throughout the day in aperture priority mode. I will be using auto-focus and also using an auto ISO. The camera and lens being used will be the same as for my Daido Moriyama shoot: my Nikon D3200, with a standard kit lens. I will not be using a tripod either, because it would be trouble to carry around this urban environment. One of the key locations I am planning on taking shots for this shoot is Hammersmith Bridge. This is because it has an amazing view, and you can often see lights on either side of the Thames. The lights and the architecture you can see would work effectively for some of Castiglione's shots taken in the dark. I will Castiglione's work is very vibrant, so I will be using digital editing also be taking shots in the day, and if they look too dull, I will edit to increase the vibrancy and warmth, like in the YouTube video them in PIXLR to increase the vibrancy. Some day shots may be above.

edited to look like they were taken at night too.

I am also thinking of taking some shots for this shoot at the London Euston train station because the architecture there is quite modern, and I think it would suit Castiglione's style well, especially near the Underground's entrance. As I will be using the Hammersmith & City line frequently while in London, I intend to take some shots with the stations around Shepherd's Bush, as the platforms would match the colours this photographer uses. Another destination I will be using for some shots is the Novotel in Hammersmith, as I will be there for another hobby of mine, and the glass and interior would make for some great images. I want to attempt to emulate a lot of Sergio Castiglione's work, and to do this, I will take inspiration from my 15 inspirational images instead of just the one I analysed. I am aiming to achieve a wide variety of photographs by the end of this shoot.

Artist Investigation / Sergio Castiglione / Final Image: I have chosen this as my most successful image because I really like the composition of the photo. Behind the barrier there are the tops of trees, and behind the tops of the trees you can see a glass building which is reflecting the lights from the hotel behind where I took the shot. The lights show the image was taken fairly late at night, and I love the cool atmosphere that is provided within this image. Castiglione sometimes uses night photography with unique architecture and sometimes uses reflections for his photography too. This is a mini combination of them and I only did small adjustments to the original image such as lowering the exposure and increasing the contrast slightly. To improve this image, I would rotate the image to the left by a few degrees, but I don't mind the little quirk it has.

"I don’t believe I have a specific photography genre. I always love to try new things. I spend a lot time on the street, but sometimes I get tired of this and will change to shooting nature or portraits." "Sometimes bringing a friend with you when you hit the street might be helpful. Artist Investigation / Cocu Chen Liu / SEMI Analysis: Another artist I have chosen is Cocu Chen Liu, and I cannot seem to find a title for this image, but it was uploaded to Instagram 20th August 2014. In the image there is a silhouette reflected of a man, with two tall buildings on each side of him. You can also see his blue trainers. This image follows the rule of thirds as the man is in the centre and there are two buildings either side of him. The viewer's eyes are lead around the image because the trainers are in the foreground and as they look further into the background they see the reflection and the tall buildings reaching for the distance. The perspective the photographer is taken is a shot from above, which the puddle mirrored below. This is great for my Urban environment project because it gives a surreal touch to the high buildings, and they are slightly distorted from the movements of the puddle. One of the visual elements Liu employs is shape. In this image, the shape of the puzzle is off centre and the shapes of the photographer and the buildings in the background are apparent. The photograph has been taken from a short distance so that not too much of the ground was in view, but his shoes were still visible. The photo has been taken using a mobile phone, as it is easier to carry, and easier to hide in the reflection as well. To emulate this photography I would use my mobile camera and take photos in cities with puddles too. If my mobile camera didn't work well enough, I would try to hide my camera by placing it by my sides. I feel the intent of this photograph was to capture a view of another side of cities: instead of a busy street filled with people and only seeing the lower parts of buildings, this feels more secluded and modern, with the building fading into the background and one person. The colours are also cooler, which tends to match a futuristic setting.

Artist Investigation / Elliott Erwitt & Cocu Chen Liu / Comparative Analysis: Elliott Erwitt's work features animals as the focal point of the image and then the urban life in the background, whereas Cocu Liu has figures of a few at most humans in his imagery. They both follow the rule of thirds and are shot at a reasonable length from the subject of the photo, to allow the architecture to be prominent, though Erwitt's are more blurred in this collection because dogs are the common denominators in them, but you can still see very well some of the buildings in the background. The colours featured in Erwitt's are monochromatic while Liu's have a futuristic tone. If I have the opportunity, I wish to merge the two ideas: an animal, with architecture in the background, in blue sort of tones. Depending on the architecture the the background could either be blurred, and the image have a shallow depth of field, or the background could be very detailed. If the architecture seems old fashioned or not that smooth, I intend to use a shallow depth of field and have the camera focused on the dog, while still having the building as a prominent feature. If the building is more smooth, I would probably use a wider depth of field to capture it, and emuate Cocu Liu's work, with the dog still as a focus.

Photo Safari / Shallow DOF & Bokeh: In the Portraiture & Identity project, I tried to create a bokeh effect on two occasions, but these were not the most successful. Bokeh uses a shallow depth of field to be successful most of the time, which is something I failed to incorporate into my photography previously. A shallow depth of field allows a lot of detail on the subject and focus of the image, and less on the background, allowing bokeh to take form. I have finally been able to achieve an effective bokeh effect, as well as take some shallow depth of field images too, for fine details you wouldn't typically take notice to.

COMPONENT 1

Final Composition Ideas / Initial Inspiration: To conclude my project, I want to create two final compositions using both digital and physical manipulation. Because this project focusses on urban environments and a lot of my photos are of architecture, I want to keep my final pieces simplistic. I don't want to overcomplicate the images, but I want editing to be visible and prominent. I also want my final compositions to have colour in them because I feel like most of my images are quite dull and have an industrial look to them - I want to juxtapose this with colours and create a somewhat vivid photo.

Composition Design 1: For this composition I want to bring more colour and contrast to the images I have taken. I am taking inspiration from the work of Sven Pfrommer and link it with my London Underground photos (inspired by David Gutierrez's work), as well as other shots I took around London. I have taken inspiration from Pfrommer as London is often seen as a pretty industrial atmosphere, but it can be colourful and vibrant in some places. I'd like an image of this outcome to be printed, so there is a physical piece for my final set of work, however I intend to make a mini virtual series on ISSUU as an e-book. "I find most of my inspirations from my traveling." - Sven Pfrommer "I’ll take photos while traveling and back in the studio, sometimes month later, I’ll integrate paints, drawings and other visual mediums." Sven Pfrommer

Composition Design 1 / Artists and Techniques: Sven Pfrommer: I am intending to create a similar output of those of Sven Pfrommer. I will be using digital overlays like he does, as well as physical printing to create the colourful layers. His work adds colours to busy and often-seen-as-dull environments, which I believe will work effectively with my London photos. David Gutierrez: Because my overall theme for this unit is 'Urban Environments', I am wishing to implement any shots I have from London into this final composition, but for this idea, I'd like to stick to my images emulating David Gutierrez's work. London transport is very busy, and the faded look these images could gain would suit some stations really well.

Composition Design 1 / Inspirational Videos:

These videos are both digital. I intend to physically create the colourful background and the use is as a digital scan / overlay to create the final product. The e-book would be used to present the images.

Composition Design 1 / Shoot Plan & Physical Experimentation: For this series of images, I do not need to produce another shoot. I will be using previously taken photos from London from various shoots - the two school trips and my own personal trip. The focal point will be buildings and the London Underground, specifically the David Gutierrez emulation shoot. These will then be digitally edited in the style of Sven Pfrommer. I will be doing physical experimentation for these final pieces. Sven Pfrommer uses gelli prints and scans them as digital overlays for his work. I will be trying to emulate his technique and then layering the colours onto the digitally edited images. These colours will make certain areas of the image stand out more compared to others, which is what I'm aiming for. I think I'd be using paints, brushes and sponges to do this.

Composition Design 1 / Final Image: This is my final image. I believe this is my most successful image because of the texture of the image and the various colours used. I used primarily red for the gelli print because it is an iconic colour on London Underground trains. I also used blue because it is another common colour to see, and the yellow because the Circle line stops at this station. The pinks and green represent the Hammersmith & City Line and the District Lines, which this train would also run alongside at some point within its journey from A to B. I like how the layered edit of the tube platform creates more shape and lines to the image, especially near the ceiling of the platform where the lights run.

Composition 1 / Final Outcome:

Composition Design 2: For this composition, I would like to combine the work of Reynald Drouhin with my London photography work. I want to create another photography flipbook, and add the digital edits into it, alongside successful shots. This composition is solely digital editing and will contain work from all London shoots I have done. The flipbook will contain mostly photographs but possibly little captions explaining images too. Reynald's work inspired me because I like the way sections of some of his images are inverted. I think it would be interesting to see what areas of London would look like with sections inverted, as well as what his work would look like in a more crowded area. "He studied fine arts at the beaux-arts in Paris (DNSAPNational Diploma of Fine Arts- and Hypermedia Multimedia Masters, 1998) and at the University of Paris 1 PanthéonSorbonne. His art integrates digital tools, photography, video, installations and silkscreen."

Composition Design 2 / Artists & Techniques: Reynald Drouhin: I want to create an edit similar to the work of Reynald Drouhin with my London images. My images will have less free space but I like the idea of flipping a section of the image to create a difference in them.

Flipbook: I, once again, wish to combine my London work to this set, and then upload them as a flipbook. These shots will likely be taken from the London trips, but a few may be taken from my emulations of Gutierrez's too.

Composition Design 2 / Inspirational Videos:

I believe this video will be useful to me to help me digitally edit This video will be used to help create the flipbook that the Drouhin-inspired edits will be placed in. the images in the style of Reynald Drouhin.

Composition Design 2 / Plan & Experimentation: I do not intend to take any more shots for this project. I will be using any shots I have taken in London for it. Because I previously focused on London Underground (for the first composition), I intend to use more varied photos I have taken in the city as well as my favourite London Underground shots. I have a feeling that I will only be able to use specific photographs for editing in this series, because I need the centres of the images to be bold when flipped both horizontally and vertically. If there isn't a noticeable change in the middle, then the image won't be as successful as I wish it to be. I will be editing my shots using PIXLR E. Currently I am unsure of how I will rotate areas of my image, however I think I will use shapes and tools provided by PIXLR to do so, and copy sections of the image onto other layers. This should hopefully reduce the impact of any errors I potentially could make: deleting areas; ruining contrast between the flipped and the standard areas; accidentally moving the images; etc. I will be adjusting the contrast of the layers as well to create bolder areas.

Composition Design 2 / Final Image: I believe this image was my best image because the are rotated provides contrast to different ends, and I believe the bright colours compliment the style. I also really like how the lights on the right side of the image have a lot of detail, and trail down the image, further away from the centre of the edit. The lights also provide reflections, and mirror the lighting on it, which I also find intriguing. To edit this image I used PIXLR E and increased the contrast of the background and messed with the lighting slightly. I think this worked well to create a more bold look, which compliments the rotated area in the middle of the image.

Composition 2 / Final Outcome:

Urban Environments / Evaluation: For this project, I have been trying to focus on the idea of urban environments - more specifically what makes them. To complete my research, I looked at various artists, techniques, and general ways of editing my work. To begin the project I set an overall theme and an artist linked to my overall theme: London and David Gutierrez. I set an overall theme because I had plans to visit London numerous times within the time I have worked on this. Because I would be visiting frequently, I though it would be best to create a theme. David Gutierrez has done pieces based on London as well and a series on the London Underground which I have taken inspiration and a liking to. The David Gutierrez investigation taught me how to make the most of a limited environment, with only being able to shoot stations and tube trains. It also gave me the opportunity to take photos of moving vehicles and still environments. The London Underground shoot linked into my overall theme really well. During late October, I took part in a creative-subjects' school trip to London. We went from Euston to the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Tate Modern and Covent Garden. It was very entertaining, and I took plenty of photographs, which would be proven useful to my 'Urban Environment' project and used in later compositions. I took over 1,000 photographs but whittled my contact sheet down to around 500 or so. Less than two months later, I would be returning to London on an English school trip. We went around Camden and Covent Garden, seeing musicals and generally just looking around. On the second day in London, I took photos of Covent Garden once more and around the Strand area. This shoot was a lot smaller than the one I had created on the first London trip, despite having more time in London, because we went to busier locations; this didn't mean there were no good shots, however. Some of these photos would also proceed to be used in later compositions. Continuing from that point, I looked into various artists and chose four to look at in closer detail. I did a SEMI analysis on Daido Moriyama, Sergio Castiglione, Cocu Chen Liu and Elliott Erwitt. In February, I went down to London once more for leisure and to pursue my ambitions. This gave me the opportunity to take photos for these four artists... I created contact sheets for the four of them, and proceeded to edit and review the Daido Moriyama and Sergio Castiglione investigations in further detail. 'Editing' images for the Daido Moriyama investigation taught me that photos don't necessarily need any editing at all, and that the best images can be the ones you expect the least. It also allowed me to create a fast-paced atmosphere, which can often be the case in busy areas of cities. Castiglione's work varied a lot so I took that to my advantage to try and capture different images. I used different areas of London to create a variety, and I learnt that the colours in an image, and the time of day can also be significant in changing the result of an image. After looking into these artists, I did a photo safari at school when I returned up north once more. I used various techniques including bokeh, shallow depths of field, different viewpoints, different lenses, shapes and framing. While editing these, I created some really cool images and gained more experience with PIXLR. I used these as practice of annotations for my contact sheets too. We created three contact sheets total for the photo safaris in school, however only two are uploaded on this page. Finalising my project, I created two compositions. These required both physical and digital editing. I put the final images from the compositions onto a Powerpoint and turned the Powerpoint into a flip-book. I learnt how to use gel-printing and how to rotate specific sections of images, I also believe that presenting these images in a flip-book was beneficial because to complete my images they would have been done online. I believe this project has been a lot more successful compared to my other ones. My contact sheets are a lot more annotated, and I have done a lot of independent work. I have learnt various techniques and I've revised what I have learnt previously - all cause for success, The overall theme ties the project together nicely, and gives a more organised feeling to it as well, in my opinion. I wish I could have created better shoot results for my other artists, however, and I also wish I had used my time more efficiently to create a better-quality outcome. I am satisfied with this one, but there was potential for more detail and work. To improve, I would have to work on my time-management skills and annotate my edited images more.
