COMPONENT 1

Personal Projects : Urban Environment Definition : An urban area is the region surrounding a city. Most inhabitants of urban areas have non-agricultural jobs. Urban areas are very developed, meaning there is a density of human structures such as houses, commercial buildings, roads, bridges, and railways. "Urban area" can refer to towns, cities, and suburbs. "Each of us-adult or child-must earn nature's gift by knowing nature directly, however difficult it may be to glean that knowledge in an urban environment." Richard Louv " What I like about cities is that everything is king size, the beauty and the ugliness." Joseph Brodsky

Urban Environment - CHELSEY PATERSON / GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY

Why this artist? I have chosen this artist because he tries to tell a story behind his pictures that he takes of his surroundings and the beauty of nature and life. When I first saw his work, I felt very inspired to begin emulating his style and to look deeper into his work and what inspires him. Who are they? Andrew Prokos is a New York City based fine art and architectural photographer. His fine art photographs incorporate architectural elements and sweeping natural and urban views. Andrew's cityscapes of New York and other locations are composed of numerous meticulously-captured high-resolution images. Why this quote? I feel this quote expresses his love for the natural life of surroundings and the environment and the beauty of life. The quote is also telling us that its the photographers responsibility to create the magnificent pictures that tell a story. A time to stop and feel the beauty in the environment no matter what it is.

Semi Analysis / Andrew Prokos Subject: This landscape picture Andrew Prokos has taken is of a sunset at Lower Manhattan View from Trump SoHo Hotel. This photo shows the variety of buildings with different heights but also the variety of colours of the sky and buildings. Elements: The composition of this image creates natural beauty of surroundings. On first inspection, the buildings stand out as the central focus of the image. But what stands out the me the most is the sky reflecting onto the buildings. the sky had beautiful colours which make me feel happy. The effect of this is that I now feel I should pay more attention to my surroundings and the beauty of the world. Media: The photo has been taken from a short distance this is so the buildings, sun and water can catch the eye of people. Andrew wanted to make sure he could catch the amazing sunset and the reflection on the buildings. The image was taken using natural lighting outside, making the image seem very casual, natural and unplanned. This creates an atmosphere of a normal day, no special lighting or layouts needed. Intent: I strongly believe that the intent of the artist was to pull factors of life and show that your surroundings are beautiful and you don't need to edit or change these beautiful things for them to create stories. I feel Andrew was trying to tell everyone that nature and your surroundings are beautiful and magnificent.

Artist Investigation 2 / Saul Leiter Saul Leiter was an America artist and early pioneer of colour photographer. With distinctive imagery suffused with painterly qualities, he is often grouped with other photographers of the New York School such as Richard Avedon, Weegee, and Diane Arbus. "T he important thing in life is not what you get, but what you throw out." Saul Leiter Why this artist? I chose this artist because his work creates definition and also he tries to tell a story behind his pictures that he takes which makes me interested in his work. I felt inspired to know more about the meanings/ stories behind his pictures. Who are they? Saul Leiter was an America artist and early pioneer of colour photographer. With distinctive imagery suffused with painterly qualities, he is often grouped with other photographers of the New York School such as Richard Avedon, Weegee, and Diane Arbus. Why this quote? This quote stood out to me because it tells us that the only thing important in life is what you throw out and not what you get. This quote is a quote I need to read more to make me understand that what I do is important.

Semi Analysis/ Saul Leiter Subject: This picture taken by Saul Leiter was taken of an orange umbrella which in the picture is the main focus which is why the background is blurred out faintly. Elements: The composition of this image creates natural beauty of surroundings. On first inspection, the orange umbrella is the focus of the image, but the reflection on the floor is also eye catching. This picture has a mixture of dull colours but also bright colours. Media: This image was taken from a short distance from the orange umbrella but a far distance from the background. I think there has been a bit of editing on the umbrella and background. Intent: I strongly believe that the intent of the artist was to pull factors of life and show that only doing a bit of editing can change a lot of the photo. But also to make you realise that keeping some of it the same makes it look less edited but different.

Why this artist? I chose this artist because his work isn't all the same style every picture is a bit different, this drew me to his work because it shows that he doesn't just stick to one style but it has made me feel inspired to know more about the meanings/ stories behind his pictures. Who are they? Pedro Correa is a fine art photographer with a difference. Having studied oil painting and comic art at the Brussel's Royal Academy of Arts, he became fascinated by photography and its capacity to capture the moment. Why this quote? This quote inspired me because it tells us that moments that are fragile should be captured and kept to us to remmember so they don't float away.

Semi Analysis / Pedro Correa Subject: This picture done by Pedro Correa was taken infront of a building that looks like a pub. This picture also has some fainted overlay pictures which makes the picture more creative and eyecatching. Elements: The composition of this image creates natural beauty of surroundings and overlaying. On first inspection, the overlaying pictures is the focus of the image, but the bright pink stripe is also eye catching. This picture has a mixture of dull colours but also bright colours.

Media: This picture was taken from a short distance and was then edited. The main editing bit of the picture is the overlaying which is the main media of this picture. Intent: I strongly believe that the intent of the artist was to pull factors of life as well as show that doing editing doesn't matter as it can make the picture look more creative and interesting. But also doing some editing can create the story or build up the story of the picture.

"The mirror always connects us to a world hereafter that looks spatial and immediate at the start but turns metaphysical. " Why this artist? I chose this artist because his work is unusual but unique. Sergio tries to make his pictures different but eye catching and this is why I chose him but he also made me feel inspired to know more about what he is inspired by and know more about his techniques. This quote stood out to me because it tells us that no matter what happens in the world the mirror will always connect and that everything in the world is nature and mind.

Semi Analysis/ Sergio Castiglione Subject: This picture done by Sergio Castiglione looks like it was done of a car window. The reflection of the palm trees on the window makes the picture look more unique and travel like. Elements: The composition of this image creates natural beauty of surroundings and travel. On first inspection, the palm trees in the car window is the focus of the image, The image has a mixture of suttle colours. Media: This picture was taken from a short distance and was then edited a little bit. The main focus of the image is the palm trees on the window which I think has a little bit off editing done to it as well as the blue colour on the car which I think the colour was softened. Best One I choose this image as my best one because, I like how I used the glass ball but also, using the technique of adding two stripes of black and white to add to the picture to create more definition. This image also was the image that mainly caught my eye out of these chosen four I did. My favourite bit about the picture is the glass ball because of how it added so much to make the picture better.

Shoot Plan / Andrew Prokos and Saul Leiter F or my shoot, my plan is to follow the Architectural Techniques and Processes Photo Safari sheet, as this will help me with my shoot but also will help me know what the techniques are that I need to try and incorporate in my shoot. My shoot will be inspired by Andrew Prokos and Saul Lieter. I will try to incorporate in my shoot reflection, worms eye, symmetry and black and white. I chose Andrew Prokos and Saul Leiter because their work inspires me as its all linked to nature but also its eye-catching. Although the shoot will be hard to do I'm going to try my best to do the shoot inspired by Andrew and Saul, Once the pictures are done they will be edited a little bit but then will be edited using Pixlr. I'm not going to do much editing as I want to keep it natural. I'm going to use my 4000d canon camera or my iPhone XS Max but also I will use different props like my mum or siblings but also different objects etc. I will choose a few of my favourite pictures from their work and will try to do the same but in my own way.

Edited Images / 6 Best Ones / Saul Lieter and Andrew Prokos Shoot

Editing Process

First I added a tint of colour using hue and saturation to add some colour to the picture so it wasn't just black and white. I also tried to use a tint of colour so it looks similar to Saul Lieter's work.

Next I desaturated the colour a bit to make it look lighter like there's a small tint of the colour but mainly black and white. I then cropped the picture to make it the size I want.

Lastly, I did more hue and saturation and lightened the colour a bit more so it added a bit of definition to the picture to make it look similar to Saul's work.

Final Image Favourite I choose this image as my favourite one from the shoot . This image is inspired by Saul Lieter. This is my favourite image because, it has some houses/ buildings which are linked to the topic urban environments but also its linked to both Andrew and Saul. The reason I also choose this picture is because of the bright sunset colours in the sky that catch the eye but also creates happiness and definition. This picture always puts a smile on my face but also shows a sign to me that my angel is looking over me.

The shoot will be a mixture off these two photographers. My intent is to do a boxed sculpture with my edited images inspired by Saul and Andrew . Composition 1 Final Outcome (Evaluated) F or my composition 1 I did five A3 cubes showing my work based off Saul Lieter and Andrew Prokos. Composition 1 was hard but I think it turned out better than expected . With my cubes I used my pictures from my shoot to show my work in a neat presented way. Doing these cubes has made me develop my knowledge in understanding how to assemble something and create something of my own. But for this project, I have been trying to focus on the idea of urban environments - more specifically what makes them and how I can do work inspired by urban environments. To complete my research, I looked at various artists, techniques, and general ways of editing my work and I set myself the goal to do something inspired by Saul and Andrew. This meant doing my shoot then making it into something big. For me was making the cubes. Finalising my project, I created my composition. This required both physical and digital editing. During the Easter holidays I went to Blackpool for a few nights which meant I could take the chance to do most of my shoot there as there was many different buildings including the Blackpool tower. When choosing what to do as my composition 1 I wanted to create something that would be hard but well presented. To do the cubes I used a square template to help me make it a little bit easier. Once I had my template I started adding in my images inclusing some edited ones that were my favourite from the shoot. After I had done the digital work of the cubes I printed them out onto glossy thick paper which would make the cubes more sturdy. I then had to do some physical work which was making it into the cube which was the hardest bit out of the cubes making. In the end the cubes were done and completed. After doing the cubes it made me realise that I had learnt new skills and techniques.
