Personal Projects : Urban Environment

Personal projects : Urban Environments An urban area is the region surrounding a city. Most inhabitants of urban areas have non-agricultural jobs. Urban areas are very developed, meaning there are a high number of human structures such as houses, commercial buildings, roads, bridges, and railways. "Urban area" can refer to towns, cities, and suburbs. I found these quotes inspiring and useful for my project. I found walking through the city focusing on the the architecture and cityscape useful. It gave me the opportunity to reflect on my ideas and what I was looking to achieve. Although Louv was reflecting on nature, I felt

Walking is very good for writers. There's something fundamentally useful about not talking to anybody, not looking at a screen, and being in nature - even if that nature is an urban environment. Each of us-adult or child-must earn nature's gift by knowing nature directly, however difficult it may be to glean that knowledge in an urban environment. Richard Louv The jarring change going from an urban environment to an extremely remote natural environment is extremely inspiring. It's constantly stimulating, it's like a slap in the face. Carter Burnell

I needed to know the cityscape directly in order to capture my ideas on the essence of the urban environment. In this project I explored both urban areas and the natural world and, like Burnell, I too found it inspiring. Each type of photography created a new challenge.

Pedro uses the full range of camera settings to achieve his effects: focus, dynamic range, ISO and aperture. He does not merge images or digitally edit them which I find particularly inspiring. I choose this artist because his photographs are full of colours, and I like warm, bright, low-contrast colours that create a calming image overall and please the eye. From the first moment I saw his work, I was incredibly inspired to follow his style and delve deeper into how he creates images. To emulate their work, I will shoot on a cold day with steam and condensation on the windows. Pedro shoots reflections using windows and passers-by. Therefore to emulate his style I will would go out to a shopping area and photograph cityscapes through the window. The light I intend to use is natural light and I will use a camera Canon 4000D and possibly a tripod. Semi-Analysis: Subject The genre of this image is landscape and street imagery. The prop I can see is a wall with a drawing of a car which it is partly ripped Elements The subject of this image is the car which is in the midground behind the window. The rule of thirds has been used in this image, creating a balanced image with the car the main focus. The perspective that this image is taken from is eyes level which makes it feel as if the viewer is actually in front of the window looking out. This makes the viewer feel part of the scene as if they are actually there. The bright colour of the car contrasts with the dark background, drawing the viewer's eye to it. The most striking elements are the lines and shapes. For example, the distorted image of the car creates curves and waves which juxtapose the viewer’s expectations of the shape of a car. This becomes a focal point of the image which the viewer begins to POWERED BY explore. https://eleanorgcsephotographypghs.weebly.com/urban-environment.html

Media This image is taken from a long distance; however it is cropped to ensure the viewer is aware there is only 1 focal point. The car is placed along the bottom on the image which leads the viewer's eye along the base of the photograph. However the viewer’s attention is then shifted upwards by the tear in the artwork. This image has been taken outside using natural light which highlights some aspects whilst darkening others. This creates an atmosphere because the bright colours contradict the dark areas. To emulate this image at home, I will use the settings f/14 and auto settings for the rest. Additionally to help me with this, I will research into street art in order that I can explore how artists have captured aspects of street life which will help me develop my own ideas. Intent However, the distorted car, the darker backgrounds alongside the ripped artwork indicates something sinister which contradicts the colour of the car. The colour yellow is a bright colour which evokes warmth and positive feelings. The juxtaposition of the two emotions creates interest for the viewer, causing them to switch between the two opposing emotions.

Subject This photograph was taken on the street and it is shot through a café window. Element The composition of the photo shows a vibrant red sign with contrasting white soft curved lettering which is placed in top left. The curved lettering contrasts with the straight lines of the rectangular sign, drawing the attention of the viewer. All other objects in the image are distorted or hard to make out but are gently illuminated by the dimmed white lighting. From the Expresso sign, the viewer’s eyes move to the red distorted figure in the centre, illuminated by the spots of soft red lighting on the right, before exploring the more gloomy areas. The rule of third has been used as it can be divided into 3 equal sectors: the top level including the Expresso sign, the bottom third where the detail is lost in the semi gloom and the middle section containing the silhouettes of café dwellers highlighted in the soft lighting. The glass which has condensation on it, creates a blurry effect, causing in the white and red colours to blend, giving the image an impressionist feel. The photographer employs a range of visual elements in his work. The most striking element is the cheery red sign which uses contrasting shapes lines, pattern and colours, providing a focal point for the image. Media The image is taken from a long distance however not cropped. The focus point is the sign as it is brightly coloured and in focus. This photo has been taken outside looking through a window. . The artificial light is placed near the middle third of the image which then creates shadows and silhouettes through the window. This creates a mysterious atmosphere as you cannot fully see everything due to the condensation, adding a sense of tension and suspense. Intent I feel the message this image conveys is mixed the warm glow of the red and white lighting creates a warm atmosphere, reinforced the dark tone which highlight the photo is taken at night and the poor weather suggested by the raindrops. This gives the bar a cosy feel. However, this is juxtaposed against the harsh contrasts of the Espresso Bar sign and the brick wall of the bar seen through the window to the right. This gives the image a slightly unsettling feel.

Evaluation: The rule of thirds has been used here which serves to place the woman in the centre, making her the focal point. The viewer’s eye radiates from the woman, allowing them to explore the pram to her right and the top of the building above, before focusing in on the raindrops in the foreground. The photo was taken at eye level which allows the viewer to draw their own conclusions about the woman. If the camera had been placed above, the woman would have appeared more vulnerable: placing the camera low would have made her appear more powerful. It also draws attention to the mist which serves to blur the image. The most striking elements are the tones and textures of the waterbeds on the window. These help to obscure the image but also take on their own pattern, creating another layer for the viewer to explore. The photo has been taken from a short distance so the viewer can focus purely on the woman. The woman has been placed in the mid-ground and the window is in the foreground. By doing this, it is as if the viewer is actually there looking through the window. The photo has been take outside using natural light which gives the image a natural feel. The light source is placed above, creating different shadows and highlights. The blurred image, hidden behind a pattern of raindrops creates a slightly sinister atmosphere as the true identity of the woman is not known. Semi-Analysis Saul Leiter Postmen, 1952 by Saul Leiter Subject This image is of a snowy scene. It’s an almost sedate place, blanketed by falling snow which puts a soft distance between the viewer and the two postmen, giving the impression we are being given a tiny glimpse of their everyday world. Leiter uses street signs in his images to create, not bright vivid colour, but soft hues which add to the intimacy of the scene. I love the way the swirl of the white lettering complements the soft snowflakes and the way the lines of snow on the roof tops and the street signs create gentle horizontal lines which contrast with the vertical falling of the snowflakes. Elements he composition of the image is focused in the middle. The T photograph is taken at eye level, making the viewer feel like they are across the street. This picture has been taken from a long distance and at an angle. This is so you can capture more detail in the scene, allowing the viewer to explore the relationship between the two men and their environment. The viewer’s eyes are immediately drawn to the people walking and then to the signs, giving the impression the messages on the signs symbolise aspects of life at that time, which are not necessarily relevant to the two men walking away from them. The photography employs a range of visual element in his work for example the horizontal layers created by the roof tops and signs as well as the layering which creates depth as you move back from the snow to the people and then to the buildings. Media This image has been taken form a long distance. However, the photographer has zoomed in so you can clearly see detail such as the lettering on the signs as well as making the two men the focal point. This is so the viewer's eyes are led to the people, allowing the viewer to deduce their role and intentions. The photo was taken outside using the natural dim sunlight to highlight the natural elements of the scene. The light source is above which creates shadows, creating interest in the image. To emulate this image myself, I would take an image outside of people going about their daily life, maybe people on their way to work in a busy street. I would aim to frame the picture so there was a balance of elements and soft hues creating a ‘chocolate box’ image.

Intent I feel like this image convoys a sense of happiness and joy. Snow is often associated with Christmas which is seen as a generous season.

Subject The genre of this image is portraiture and street. Leiter has used the condensation on the window to create a mysterious atmosphere. The subject is concealing his face from view, and looking down at something we can't quite see. The effect is to create a sense of mystery allowing the viewer to use their imagination to work out what he is doing. Elements This Leiter has placed the lorry in the background, creating a bright backdrop to the man who is shown in dark tones. The effect is to create an eye catching image. Leiter uses rule of thirds: the mustard coloured van in the top third contrasts with the dark almost silhouettes of the figures in the centre third, whilst the rain running down the window in the bottom third adds texture to the image. The viewer is immediately drawn to the man and what he is focusing on, before focusing on the vibrant lorry in the background which contrasts with the man’s clothing. This contrast is aesthetically pleasing, warming the viewer to the photograph. By taking the image at eye level, Leiter places the viewer firmly in the scene on the other side of the window, reinforcing the intimacy of the piece as it is as if the viewer is being given a special glimpse into the man’s life. Media This image utilises short-distance. This is because the man is close up to the window so you can see him in greater detail. It is as if you can watch him without the man being aware of your presence, creating a personal relaxed feel. Taking this photograph from a distance would lose this intimate moment as the connection between the viewer and the man would be lost. The reason it may be cropped this way is to guarantee that the man is the main focal point of the image. The object placed in the background is a vibrant lorry. By doing this, the viewer’s eyes are led to the man who stands out against this background as he is wearing darker tones, Leiter has taken this picture using natural light which is peaking through the window. The light source from above creates shadows on the man, concealing his face and adding intrigue to the image.

Evaluation: Saul Leiter The composition of the photo shows the reflection of a car in a window - it is at an angle allowing the viewer to see to the right. The viewer’s eye is led from the car to other detail in the window. The perspective that I have taken the photo from is from eye view. I like the way the viewer's eye flit from the car to the things in the window as they try to make sense of the image. The photo has been taken from a short distance so that unessential things are cropped out from view. This is so the shop window is the main focal point of the image. The car have been placed in the background so the viewer’s eyes are led around the whole image. The photo has been taken outside using natural lighting, enhancing the natural elements of the image. The light source is placed above which is creating a reflection in the window. This produces a bright, busy atmosphere as the image is cluttered with lots of detail, some is reflected and some is actually in the window. There is a lot for the viewer to make sense of and explore.

The composition of the photo shows a cafe through a window - people are sitting around the table in the background. The viewer’s eye is led around the photo. Firstly, you are drawn to the centre light, before your eyes flit between the other lights and the red hues. The warm yellow and deep red create a richness in the image which is pleasing to the eye. The viewer’s eyes finally rest on the people tucked away in the corner, enjoying an intimate moment together. By taking the image at eye level, the viewer is placed at the scene as though they are going to step inside and enjoy their own private moment with friends or family. This perspective is effective because it creates a cosy feel and the red conveys a sense of warmth. POWERED BY https://eleanorgcsephotographypghs.weebly.com/urban-environment.html

create a warm glow. There are also a lot of squares and rectangles which the viewer's eyes move between. The photo has been taken from a short distance as the camera is physically close to the window but a long away from the back of the cafe, creating depth, giving a private feel to the people at the back. The viewer’s eyes are therefore led to the back, past all the bright lights. The artificial light source is placed above, highlighting certain parts of the image, for example, the tables which have a lovely warm glow, adding to the warmth of the scene and giving the image a vintage look.

“Photography helps people to see." Berenice Abbott Abbott looked to photograph aspects of New York from unusual angles or from a different perspectives, focusing on patterns and changes in light to draw attention to the changing city environment such as the skyscrapers pictured above. In this photograph, the juxtaposition of the spiral stairs against the angular lines of the skyscraper create a powerful image which is enhanced by the perspective in which it was captured. Here Abbott generates a feeling of awe in the viewer as she is emphasising the height of the modern skyscraper against the metal swirl of the wrought iron stairway.

Semi-Analysis Berenice Abbot Street Seller and Cart ubject S The genre of this image is still life and street imagery. The props are an umbrella and a man standing in the street. Elements The composition of this the photo shows it was taken from eye level in order to place the viewer in the scene as if they are walking past the seller and the stall. The viewers’ eyes are initially led around the cart which is in the centre of the image, then they are led to the man who is selling products at the stall. The photographer employs a range of visual elements in her images. The most striking of which is the changes in tone on the umbrella and the stall. Media This image has been taken from a short distance, and is cropped so that aspects of the background can still be seen which serves to place the man and his stall in his local environment whilst still keeping the man and cart as the focal point of the image. The viewer’s eyes are led from the umbrella to the man and the rest of the cart, before moving to the background. This allows the viewer to explore the juxtaposition of the two: the cityscape in the background appears modern and angular, whereas the man and cart have a vintage feel, reinforced by the old fashioned lettering on the cart and outfit of the seller. The light source is placed above which creates dark shadows under the umbrella and cart which are balanced by the dark buildings and taxi on the right. The contrasts between light and dark tones create a visually appealing image which would catch a viewer’s eye. This creates an atmosphere of happiness emphasising the satisfaction gained by ‘honest work’. To emulate this at home I would go out on a sunny day and I would set my camera on a long shutter speed. I would begin looking at shop fronts, looking to capture changes in light and people going about their daily lives. Intent I feel this image aims to show the city is a mix of both the modern world and small snippets holding on to the nostalgia of the past. The aesthetically pleasing photograph therefore appears as a celebration of the juxtaposition of the two, showing both can operate side by side. The genre of this image is street imagery and the props used are a lamppost, signs and the entrance to a house. Elements The composition of the imagery is the slightly off centre sign and an open door slightly to the right. These are in the foreground creating an imposing first impression, reinforced by the dark tones. The rule of thirds hasn't been utilized in this image, yet the top of the sign fits into the space above the building on the left creating a balanced aesthetically pleasing photograph. This encourages to viewer’s eyes to move from the post and doorway to the collection of buildings to the right. The perspective is slightly tilted upwards, giving the post and doorway more prominence in the image. These structures create vertical lines which are reinforced by the vertical lines of the buildings to the left, which juxtapose the top of the signpost. The conflicting ‘One Way’ street signs also creates confusion for the viewer, making the image all the more intriguing. Media The photo is taken from a short distance and it has been cropped so that the signpost and doorway fall on either side of the centre of the image. The actual centre therefore is the grey, mono-toned sky. This is so the main focal points are two

Intent I feel like the image conveys a strangely peaceful tone. However, it has a sinister feel, created by the, mysterious doorway and the grey tones of the image. Grey often creates a sombre mood, yet this is contrasted by the light sky and white paint work which serves to lighten the mood. The viewer therefore may feel a mixed message is being portrayed as their eye switch from the light tones to the dark which is reinforced by the conflicting messages on the signpost.

separate objects: the sign and the doorway. The viewer’s eyes are firstly led to the post and the seemingly conflicting ‘one way’ messages which are reinforced by the fact the signs are at 90 degree angles to each other. Then the viewer’s gaze is led to the mysterious door which is in shadow, leaving the viewer with lots of questions. The photo has been taken outside on the street, giving the image a natural feel. The light source is natural and coming from above. To emulate this image, I would start by going into an empty street and shooting houses at a titled angle. I would use the settings f/17 and use a long DOF. Additional I would then turn the image to B & W. so that the viewer can focus on the changes in tones in the image.

Evaluation I believe this image was successful because it captures the unusual architecture on the right which is reinforced by the straight lines generated by the other buildings and railings. The effect is to create a striking image. The detail of the fire engine is almost lost as it blends in with the white paint work above, which allows the viewer to gradually discover the vehicle as their eyes move from the buildings to other aspects of the image. It is as if the fire engine is tucked away, leaving the viewer to wonder why it is there. The image also has a very vintage vibe, created by the building architecture. This image was taken from the pavement from a distance, allowing the view to appreciate the height of the buildings whilst still having the wall in the foreground and the fire engine to put the size of the buildings in perspective, making them all the more imposing. The composition of the photo shows the building in the background, drawing the viewer’s eye to the background first before moving to other aspects of the image. The most striking elements of the image are the lines, particularly the unusual soft zigzags on the building on the right which almost appear as three waves. These are juxtapose by the straight railings below and the repeating pattern of the architecture of the building on the left. This juxtaposition helps to make the building the focal point. The natural light source is above, creating dark shadows and obscuring the detail of the bins and outbuildings on the left. This contrasts with the white of the buildings and the zigzag architecture which serves to highlight these features , making it all the more striking.

The composition of the photo shows two buildings, displaying two bold signs and painted lettering. The viewer’s eye is led from the signs at the top of the image to the detail at the bottom such as the harsh metal railings and the boarded up doorway. The perspective is eye level, allowing the viewer to imagine being at the scene. This serves to highlight the derelict feel of the image, reinforcing the negative undertones. It is as if the building’s only purpose now is to display signs.

ensuring the viewer focuses on the run down features. The metal railings with their sharp arrow shaped tops, adds contrast to the texture of the brick work and reinforces the hostile tone. His digital editing makes the images appear abstract and complex, giving layers for the viewer to explore. The effect is visually appealing and rather unusual adding interest for the viewer. The images have a magical or fantasy feel about them. The editing gives the impression the images have

been combined with coloured paints, emphasising the magical feel. It seems that most of his works are in the city where nature is sparse, yet the editing gives the images a detailed feel. To emulate Irwin’s work, I would go into the city during the day and photographed different cityscapes from a low perspective to make it appear as if the buildings are towering above. I would then digitally edit the image to give the photo a magical feel. Stephen Irvin was initially a filmmaker and freelance photographer based in Cardiff, South Wales. He began his

Stephen's work combines both digital and analogy techniques, from negative scraping and smearing to digital manipulation. His work creates unique stylised images that are dense and picturesque.

Semi-Analysis: The composition of this photo shows jagged silhouettes of people appearing to walk along a broad paved area near the base of the image. Tall soft, grey skyscrapers dominate the skyline under a ‘moody’ atmospheric sky. The rule of thirds has been use where the dark tones of the people are placed in the centre third, contrasted by the lighter tones of the top and bottom thirds. This gives a balance to the image and highlights the bustle of the passers-by. The viewer’s eyes are led from the people to the buildings beyond as if viewed through a torrent of rain that has been added through digital editing. The photo has been taken at eye level to give the impression the viewer is joining the passers-by walking along the path, This perspective is effective as the viewer appears to have the same view as those in the image. The photographer employs a range of visual elements in his work; the most sticking element is the vertical lines created by the people, building and the superimposed driving rain. Media This photo was taken from a long distance to ensure the urban environment was captured whilst making the main focal point the people walking. This photo has been taken outside on the streets using natural sunlight which creates shadows on the buildings, adding atmosphere. The digital editing further adds to this atmosphere, giving the impression the passers-by are walking through driving rain with a storm brewing. To emulate this photo myself, I would go to a city and take pictures of cityscapes with people walking through the scene. Additionally I would need to research about filters to create a sketched affect. Intent This image conveys a sense of community as commuters set about their journey to and from work. I feel the photographer is aiming to create a sombre mood as the details of the people is not revealed, reinforcing the fact they are strangers. The dark tones of the people supports this. Furthermore, the appearance of a storm perhaps underlines the daily drudgery of people travelling to and fro from work, capturing a moment of what life in the city is like. This is relevant as the project focuses on the relationship of people in an urban environment. This can also link into portraiture & identity as there are people used in this image.

Element The composition of this image show a tree covering a house, set back behind a garden in the foreground. The rule of thirds has been used in this image where the garden appears in the bottom third, the roof and branches of the tree in the top third, leaving the main part of the house in the centre , providing a focal point. The viewer’s eyes are led around this image from the front doorway of the house in the centre to the imposing tree in the foreground to the right, before exploring other aspects of the image. The photo is taken from eye level as if the viewer is under the dappled shade of the tree, peeping through the branches to POWERED BY https://eleanorgcsephotographypghs.weebly.com/urban-environment.html

the house beyond. This is effective as it gives the impression that 29/58

the house is hidden away in the privacy of its own nook in the natural world.

Irwin employs a range of visual elements, the

most striking of which are the dark superimposed lines of the tree, giving the impression the tree is a key feature of this garden. Media This image was taken from a long distance to highlight that the image is tucked away secluded from the rest of the world. This makes the viewer feel they are being given an intimate peep at the house and its gardens. The tree has been placed on the right hand side with the house placed behind it, adding depth and helping to conceal the house, reinforcing the secluded feel. The photo has been taken outside using natural light from above which highlights the snow, creating a happy atmosphere and an idealistic image of rural life. To emulate this photograph, I would take pictures of houses hidden from view preferable near aspects of the natural world, creating a secluded effect. I would also look to research filters to try to recreate a similar effect.ffect. Intent I feel like the message this image conveys is something hidden and precious. The photographer is perhaps looking to show how being immersed in nature has a positive effect on people’s lives. This is because the tree is concealing the house, hinting at the fact that something is being hidden. This is relevant to the project as it is exploring the relationship between buildings and the natural world.

The aim for this composition is to create a unique piece. Using books and layering them onto of each other. I was inspired by the artist Caterina Giglio as she creates abstract photos by ripping book and layering them on top of her image - I found this very inspiring. I hope to use the image that I have already taken and use them in to emulate Giglio's style. Also the final outcome was heavily inspired by Steven Irwin.

The aim for this final piece is to make a LED sculpture - the reason why I was inspired by this the most was because i thought it had quite a vintage look to it. I also found the fact when it is in the dark it would light up to be quite unusually - the image i hope to use are my Saul Leiter artist shoot as his images would go with the the vintage theme of the sculpture.

Evaluation Initially I researched the work of Pedro Correa. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of lines space and form and use them in my own photography. Inspired by their work, I created a series of emulations by sitting in a café and capturing the people who passed by, I investigated the technical processes of motion blur and their work helped me understand the theme of Urban Environments because it helped me realizes how you can capture people/ objects in frames. Next, I researched the work of Saul Leiter. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of line tone and texture in my own photography. I created BY aPOWERED series of emulations by going around town and taking pictures of things I found abstract and unique. I investigated the technical https://eleanorgcsephotographypghs.weebly.com/urban-environment.html

processes of reflection. Their work helped me understand the theme of Urban Environments by creating images that are reflected through windows. Finally, I researched the work of Berenice Abbot. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of shape space and tone in my own photography. Inspired by their work, I created a series of emulations by changing the settings in my camera to black and white. I investigated the technical processes of desaturating images. The artist's work helped me understand the theme of Urban Environments because I realised that buildings could create awe and wonder. Furthermore, juxtaposing building against other aspects of the scene could be used to create contrasts and tension. For example, by juxtaposing a house with the natural world helped to demonstrate the power of nature over buildings that are man-made, I believe the most successful outcome was the Saul Leiter images as it was visually pleasing to the eye. I liked the way placing the people at the back of the café changed the intimacy of the image. By editing the colours, I was able to enhance the red hues which appeared to glow under the artificial light in the café. Taking the photography outside of the café worked really well as it gave the impression of a passer by looking in. I would like to explore the effect of changing the lights in the image to see the effect they create. Would less lights on create a more intimate feel for example or would the people at the back be too dark to make out? I would also like to explore the effect of removing the man by the bar. Removing him would allow the viewer to have a clearer view of the people at the back. However, it may be that just getting a glimpse of them creates more intimacy. To conclude, this project has given me the opportunity to explore urban environments and find ascetically pleasing images as well as find interesting perspectives. It also allowed me to explore the effects of juxtaposing urban landscapes with the nature world and human's relationships with their man-made environments. I have learnt many skills in this section of the project which I will use in the future.
