Personal Projects / Urban Environment An urban area is the region surrounding a city. Most inhabitants of urban areas have nonagricultural jobs. Urban areas are very developed, meaning there is a density of human structures such as houses, commercial buildings, roads, bridges, and railways. "Urban area" can refer to towns, cities, and suburbs

The jarring change going from an urban environment to an extremely remote natural environment is extremely inspiring. It's constantly stimulating, it's like a slap in the face. -Carter Burwell City life is millions of people being lonesome together. -Henry David Thoreau

Artist Investigation / Pedro Correa To begin my Urban Environment investigation, I will start off with the photographer Pedro Correa. I was drawn to his work because of the use of the window with the little droplets of rain on it and how it is used as the focal/blurring point for with the background is blurred due to the window being in focus.

“Taking an image, freezing a moment, reveals how rich reality truly is.” — Anonymous

Pedro is a 44 year old fine art photographer. However, he also studied oil painting and comic art at the Brussel's Royal Academy of arts which made him fascinated with the art of photography and its capacity to capture the moment. I chose this quote because I think it really captures the essence of what Pedro is trying to convey in his images as it has its own personal twist on urban photography. I could emulate Pedro's work by either finding a window with raindrops on it and capture the moment from the street, or I could spray some water on glass as well and capture the moment from that perspective. SEMI Analysis / Pedro Correa Subject: The photographers name is Pedro Correa. The title of this image is Bus stop and was taken in 2013. The genre of this image is Street photography, as you can see the lights have been blurred and the window with raindrops on is in focus. The props I can see are the coloured lights in the background and the window with raindrops on. Elements: he composition of this image show the coloured lights being blurred in T the rule of thirds. The raindrops on the window are in focus making the lights behind it blurred giving the bokeh effect. The window is in the foreground and the lights are in the background. In the image, the perspective that Pedro Correa has chosen is at eye level. The effect this gives is that you are able to see the lights at eye level and it is also how the photographer would have seen it. This perspective is effective because it shows how you would see it as if you were either the person taking the photograph, or just sat there looking out the window. The photographer employs a range of visuals in his work, The most striking and most visible are his use of colour, his use of the focus/ focal point of the image and his use of contrast between the dark night sky and the bright, vivid colours. Media: This image has been taken from a long distance in terms of the lights, but in a short distance in terms of the window. The things that may have been cropped out could have been people or buildings that would have made the image look less satisfying to look at or made the image look less central. This is so the three lights could have been made the main focal point of the image which would make the image look more satisfying and central. The lights have been placed in the background. By doing this, the viewers eyes lead to the brighter. more vivid lights which are bigger and more colourful. This photo has been taken outside in a street using the light from the colourful lights to brighten up the image. The light source is the colourful lights which give off the bokeh effect due to the window being in focus and the lights in the background being unfocused. This creates an atmosphere because of the way the lights are placed so perfectly in the image. This is aesthetically pleasing because the rule of thirds has been used making the image look better composed. To emulate this photograph myself, I would wait for night, then I would go to a shop or somewhere with a window looking out on the street and can capture the light. Additionally, I would need to research more about bokeh photographers, bokeh photography and more inspiration about the subject. I would also need to research more about the photographer to learn more about the way he takes his images and the techniques he uses. Intent: I feel the photo conveys a message of calmness and relaxation because of the lights making the image look more picturesque. It does this by the lights looking very peaceful and tranquil due to the three green lights looking so co-ordinated and well put together. This work is relevant to the project and the theme because of the fact it is taken in front of a window with raindrops on it (which gives an urban effect) and because the bokeh effect links in with the theme of urban landscapes.

Shoot Plan / Pedro Correa I have drawn inspiration from Pedro Correa because I just feel that his work is so pretty and colourful due to all the bright colourful lights in the majority of his images. I love the fact his images are so vivid with bright colour. I plan for the shoot to take place in my local town and preferably at night so I will be able to capture the pure colours from the lights. The props I intend to use are a tripod, a DSLR camera, a lens with a manual blur function so I will be able to blur my image. The lighting conditions I will require are lightly raining and a dark sky. This is because I will need a dark sky so that I will properly be able to capture how pure and colourful the lights will be. My subject will be the lights, this is because the camera will be focused on the lights, and the lights behind it will be blurred. I intend to shoot with my canon DSLR 4000D with my standard kit lens on a tripod to stabilise my camera. When considering exposure, I intend to shoot with a normal shutter speed and I will also intentionally blur my lens on my camera which will create the bokeh effect. Following the shoot, I do not intend to digitally edit my images as I feel that they do not need editing. However, if my images are too underexposed or don't capture enough colour, I will edit them so they look as best as they can.

Final Best Edit / Pedro Correa Best Image Evaluation: Overall, This experience was a good learning experience for my as I found out what it was like to shoot images in the dark and also how to blur my camera lens to create the bokeh effect for lights. My improvements for this experience would just be to take more images whilst out on a shoot. This is because I need more images to work. The Urban theme is shown throughout this image through the use of the image being taken in an Urban Environment. This is represented by the coloured light from the street being used in this image. These images were also taken in the middle of a town which also represents the Urban theme.

Artist Investigation / Saul Leiter To carry on with my Urban Environments investigation, I will be looking at Saul Leiter. I was drawn to his work because of rainy windows and cars. I think this because I feel that the person behind the window symbolises a hidden identity/ hidden self.

“We are making photographs to understand what our lives mean to us.” — Ralph Hattersley

Usually, in his images, the person in the car window or behind the rainy window is holding an umbrella which could symbolise a hidden self / personality. Saul was an 89 year old photographer and painter. His mother gifted him his first camera at the age of 12 which inspired him to become fond of photography. He has written many books and has been in many exhibitions and his work is still held up in many art museums. I chose this quote because I think it represents Saul's work really well. I think that his images are to represent some sort of hidden feeling, emotion, identity, self or personality which I feel really links in well with the quote. I could emulate Saul's work by being either in a car or in front of a rainy bus stop and have the model walking past the glass with their umbrella (Or standing as if there walking past).

COMPONENT 2

Subject: The photographers name is Saul Leiter. The genre of this image is street photography crossed over with abstract expressionism as you can see from the window which is hiding this persons identity and because the window is closely linked with the the theme and genre of urban/street photography. The props I can see in this image are the rainy window and the umbrella. Element: The composition of this image shows that the model is stood in the middle which is highlighting that the rule of thirds has been used. The raindrops on the window are in focus and the person in the background id blurred and hidden. In the image, the perspective that the photographer has chosen is eye level. The effect this has is that you are able to see the the full model. This perspective is effective because it shows how you would see the image if it was you and you would have seen it if you would have been there. The photographer employs a range of visuals in his work. The most striking an visual are his use of the window to create a sort of hidden identity for the person and create some mystery in the image. Media: This image has been taken in a long distance in terms of the man, but in a short distance in terms of the rainy window. The things that may have been cropped out could have been the man who is clearly visible on the left. Also, maybe Saul could have cropped out some of the background and some of the sides in order to make the model more central and so the image includes an aspect of the rule of thirds. The window has been placed in the foreground because it gives the camera something to focus on which distracts from the model which makes the model look blurry which gives the image and the model some mystery. This photo has been taken outside in front of a window using natural light. There isn't a clear image of where the light source is as the sky in the background of the image is cloudy and the weather is rainy. This creates an atmosphere of mystery and vagueness to the image. To emulate this photography myself, I would use equipment such as my cannon 4000D and potentially my tripod to help stabilise my camera. Also, I would use my regular camera settings for this image. I would need to be outside and in front of a window to be able to create the same effect. The weather would also need to be cloudy and/or rainy so the image would be able to look dull. Intent: I feel the photo conveys a message of mystery and also hidden emotions and hidden feelings. This is due to the fact that the man is standing in front of a rainy window, so his face is blurred, and is holding an umbrella, to cover his face. It does this through the use of the rule of thirds and how the mans head is in the top, middle third. This is relevant to the project and theme due to the image looking so 'in the theme' of urban environment and urban environment. The strengths of this image are the use of the rainy window to help foster secrecy and uncertainty. However, the weaknesses of this image are that it doesn't really link in well with the theme of urban landscapes very well.

Ernst Haas / Artist Investigation HOME

COMPONENT 1

To continue with my Urban Landscapes project, I will be looking at the Photographer Ernst Haas. I was drawn to his work because of his use of the blur when people are walking. I think this is because it makes his images look mysterious and secretive. However, I also like his images on buildings and skyscrapers. This is because of the fact that his sky scraper

images look so sharp and they differ so much from his blurred images of people. Ernst Haas was a 65 year old Austrian - American photojournalist and colour photographer who died on September 12th 1986. During his 40-year career, Haas bridged the gap between photojournalism and the use of photography as a medium for expression and creativity. I chose this quote to as I feel that it really describes and represents Ernst's work well. This is due to that fact that the blurs in his images are intentional and they make the image overall look so much better that it would have looked if it had been just a normal image of a person walking down a street. I feel his images really represent the theme and project of urban landscapes as they have a clear background of the street of an urban environment. I could emulate Ernst's work by standing my canon DSLR camera on a tripod to stabilise my camera, then I would put my camera on a slow shutter speed so I will be able to capture the intentional blur in the image.

SEMI analysis / Ernst Haas Subject: The Photographers name is Ernst Haas. This image is called Reflections, NY, 1957. The genre of this image is Urban environment and reflections. The props I can see in this picture are the lady in the red coat, the window/glass acting as a reflector, also there is the cars which have been dragged along due to their movement. Elements: The composition of this photo shows the woman in the red coat being reflected in multiple windows multiple times. This image also uses the rule of thirds due to the woman being in all columns of the lines that split up the image. The subject of the image (the lady in the red coat) is in the foreground, middle ground and in the background as she has been reflected so many times in the glass windows. The perspective that Ernst Haas has chosen is eye level. This enables you to the the many times that the woman is reflected in the window and it also enables you to see the cars moving and being reflected in the glass as well. This perspective is effective because it lets you see the blurs from the cars movements and also it lets you see the lady go from point a, to point b, to point c. This photographer employs a range of visual elements in his work. This would include elements such as the rule of thirds, contrast and movement. Media: This photo has been taken from a short distance so that you are able to fully see the three places where the lady has moved from and the places she has moved to. This is created easier when you would go closer to the glass so that you can fully capture the movements from a to b to c. This is so that the lady in the red coat is the main focal point of the image. The lady has been placed on the foreground, the middle ground and the background so that you are able to the her movements. This image has been taken outside on the street using natural light. The light source has been placed in the sky; above the subject of the image which is highlighting the lady in the coat and the cars behind her. The effect this gives is that it is highlighting the subject of the image which is giving the image a more obvious focal point. This creates an atmosphere of a more enhanced focal point which draws the focus more to her. To emulate this image myself, I would go into an Urban Environment, find a shop window, and then place a model in front of the window and make it look like she's walking. I would then take the photo into editing and copy the image twice. This will make the image look almost the same to the initial image. Intent: I feel conveys a message of time passing by. I think this because of the way that the lady in the red coat is blurred and so are cars behind the lady in the red coat which is significant because the lines blurred highlight how something has moved over time. This work is relevant to our current project and theme because of the use of the streets. This is because of the cars and the streets.

Artist Investigation / Kevin Saint Grey

To continue my research investigation of Urban Landscapes, I will be looking at the photographer Kevin Saint Grey I was draw to Kevin's work because of his use of perfection in his images. This is due to the fact that his images look so perfect and crisp

The most important aspect of an image, for me is balance - Kevin Saint Grey

because of his use of monochrome filters. Kevin St Grey shoots his images only in black and white, which is what makes his images look so aesthetically pleasing to look at. Kevin Saint Grey is a fine art photographer with a minimalist aesthetic style specialized in architecture, landscapes, and abstracts. Shooting only black and white, the photographer expresses fewer ideas that are emphasized very strongly I chose this quote because I feel that it represents his own work as best as it can. This is due to the fact that his images portray many aspects of balance because of the composition of the sky scrapers and from the angle he took them at. I could emulate Kevin Saint Grey's work by going to places such as New York or London, then I would find some sky scrapers and then take some images from looking up at them to the sky. I would not need a tripod as it would not reach the angle that is need for this image.

SEMI Analysis / Kevin Saint Grey Subject: The photographers name is Kevin Saint Grey. The genre of this image is Urban Photography. The props that I can see in the image are the three sky scrapers. Elements: The composition of this image shows how the rule of thirds has been used. This is shown by the three sky scrapers and how they are all in chosen third out of the 9 thirds that the image is split into. I also like the way that the photographer has composed the picture showing what I consider to be implied height. The subject of the image is the convergence of the sky scrapers. The clever way the photograph has been taken leads the eye to a focal point in the sky. Using leading lines to direct the human eye upwards past the high rise buildings. The perspective that the photographer has chosen is at worm's eye view. This enables you to see an abstract image which is completely different from the true reflection of how it would look from the original buildings parallel perspective. This perspective is effective because the photographer has turned parallel lines into converging lines. This photographer has employed POWERED BY https://marissagcsephotographypghs.weebly.com/urban-environment.html

a range of visual elements in his work. This would include elements HOME COMPONENT 1 such as perspective, shape, line, negative space and balance.

COMPONENT 2

Media: This photo has been taken from a long distance as it is from a worm's eye view. Angles and shapes in all of the buildings trick the eye into thinking that the structures are leaning towards each other. The angles within the buildings are all different. This is so the focal point of the image is indefinite due to the fact that peoples eyes are all drawn to different places whilst looking at the image. The buildings have all been placed in the places that they haver been so that the buildings all have leading lines which would lead towards the sky. This photo has been taken outside using natural light. The light source has been placed out of frame, this is because if it was in frame, it would distract the eye from the beauty of the buildings. This creates an atmosphere of blurred sky and beautiful buildings.

https://kevinsaintgrey.com/

Intent: I feel the photo conveys a message of moody and gloomy feelings due to the black and white filter. It does this because the image is black and white, which creates mood and tone. This work is relevant to our project / theme because of the buildings, which are at worms eye view, are all pointing upwards and are framing each other.

Shoot plan / Kevin Saint Grey I have drawn inspiration from Kevin Saint Grey because I love the fact his work looks so moody and I love the way he he uses black and white filters in his images to give his images more depth and meaning. I plan for the shoot to take place in Preston town centre. The weather will have to be dull and there will have to be plenty of clouds in the sky. The props I intend to use are a tripod to stabilise my camera, my Canon DSLR camera and my standard kit lens. The lighting I will require will be natural light from the sky to ensure the lighting is visible. The subject of the image will be the building I am emulating the work of. I intend to shoot with a canon 4000D using a standard lens on a tripod. I will be using the black and white filter on my images through the editing process to make them look as much like Kevin Saint Greys as I can. When considering exposure, I intend to shoot with a fast shutter speed to ensure I get a crisp, clear image by the end. I plan to digitally edit my images on PIXLR by sharpening them, brightening them up (if needed), adding the black and white filter on to the images and adding on some highlights and shadows.

For Composition 1, I studied the work of Reynald Drouhin. Reynald Drouhin uses the digital editing of his images to create a shape in the middle of his work in an abstract shape - called a monolith - in a reflection of the original cut out of his image. I think his images look really simple yet so complex at the same time. I tried to emulate his images by getting images that I have already taken, transferred them into PIXLR and then digitally edited them to emulate the work of Reynald Drouhin.

Composition Design 2 Inspiration

Composition 2 / S tephanie Jung “It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera… they are made with the eye, heart, and head.” -Henri Cartier-Bresson Composition 2 Shoot aim The aim of this composition is to take one of the images that I have already taken and then to take the images into PIXLR and digitally edit them to make them look like the work of Stephanie Jung. I have drawn inspiration from Stephanie Jung because I love the way she makes her images look like double vision. I chose this photographer because I thought her images looked really impressive and amazing to look at. I found her images really interesting because I think they are brilliant to look at and also because her images look like double vision when in reality, its just an overlay of the original image on top and moved over a slight bit. In the exhibition on the first, I would like to see my work printed off and stuck down on a canvas. I think this is a good set up because it presents my work off and shows the overlay on then image properly.

Best Edits / Stephanie Jung

I chose this image as one of my best edits because I loves the way you can see the lines of the overlays, but they are only slight and subtle. I love the way this image turned out because you can still clearly see the original image but you can also see the overlays which gives off a sense of slight blur and disorientation.

I chose this image as one of my best edits because I loved the way the double vision was used. This is because of the way the image is repeated and is used as an overlay over the top of the original image but you can still see the where the original image is. You can still see dark shapes and dark, vague lines which are part of the original image. I like this because it gives off a sense

I chose this image as one of my best edits because I love the distortion created in this image. I love the way the double vision and disorientation is produced in this image. I like the fact that you can still see the original image even through the distortion created by the overlays.

I chose this image as one of my best edits because I love how subtle the manipulation to the image is. I love the fact that you can still see the original image through the contortion created by the overlays.

of confusion and and also it looks as if there was a blur used.

Final Best Edit / Stephanie Jung Best Image Evaluation: I think this is my best image overall because of the way the distortion is created in the image. I think the image looks blurred but you are still able to see what the image was like originally. My improvements for this image would just be to take more images whilst out on a shoot. This is because I need more images to work with and edit. The Urban theme is shown throughout this image through the use of the image being taken in an Urban Environment. This is represented by the building being a set of terraced houses in the centre of London-a highly Urban city.

Composition Design 2 / Evaluation For Composition 2, I studied the work of Stephanie Jung. Stephanie Jung uses the digital editing of her images to create a blurred effect in her work that looks like double vision. I think her images look really simple yet so complex at the same time. I tried to emulate her images by getting images that I have already taken, transferred them into PIXLR and then digitally edited them to emulate the work of Stephanie Jung.

Final Outcomes

Evaluation / Urban Environment Initially I researched the work of Pedro Correa. He used the technique bokeh lights in the image that I selected from his gallery. I was inspired b his work because of the way he uses the blurred lights in his images. In his work, you can see elements of shape, form, colour, pattern and space. These are all shown through the colourful lights in the image of his that I had chosen to evaluate. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of shape, colour and form in my own photography examples. Inspired by their work, I created a series of emulations by taking pictures inspired by Pedro's colourful bokeh images. I did this by going out into the middle of town and finding places that had colourful lights. I then adjusted the focus on my camera to make it so that it was fully blurred. I used a tripod to stabilise my camera and to get rid of any unwanted blur. I investigated the technical processes of bokeh. Their work helped me understand the theme of Urban Environment because that images taken represent what is meant by an Urban Environment. Secondly, I researched the work of Saul Leiter. I was inspired by his work as I feel it really summarises the theme of Urban POWERED BYI feel this is because his work has used the rule of thirds and has a focal point-being the glass . His images can be described as hidden - due to the image being focused on the glass and not on the person. His images can also be described as having restful composition as the image includes having the rule of thirds. The important knowledge, skills and understanding I have gained in his project would be things like focussing on something other than the main subject of the image being the person. Through studying this photographer I was able to explore concepts of shape, colour and form. I feel my most successful outcome of the project would be the SEMI analysis for the image I initially evaluated. I think this because it is well laid out and evaluates the image to a good standard. My areas for improvement would be to delve deeper into my media part of my evaluation. Thirdly, I researched the work of Ernst Haas. I was inspired by his work as I feel it really concluded the theme of Urban Environment. I feel this is because his work has used the rule of thirds making his image more proportional. His images can be described as 'easy going' and 'moderate'. His images can also be described as having restful composition as it is 'calm' and proportional. The important knowledge, skills and understanding I have gained in his project would be things like rule of thirds and restful, dynamic compositions. Through studying this photographer, I was able to explore concepts of shape, repetition and form. I feel my most successful outcome the SEMI analysis for the image I initially evaluated. I think this because it is well laid out and evaluates the image to a good standard. My areas for improvement would be to delve deeper into my media part of my evaluation.

Then, I researched the work of Kevin St Grey. I was inspired by his work as I feel it really completes the theme of Urban Environment. I feel this is because his work has used the rule of thirds and has the use of buildings being framed in other buildings. His images are taken with a large depth of field so that you can see all of the details in the subject of the image because the peaks of the buildings being high up in the sky. His images can be described as low key as his images are taken in black and white or a changed filter describing them as quite restrained and moderate. His images can also be described as having restful composition as it is easy going. The important knowledge, skills and understanding I have gained in his project would be things like low key photography ad the use of framing buildings in other buildings, restful and dynamic compositions. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of shape, proportion and form. I feel my most successful outcome of the project would be the edits of my shoot. I think this because they are well laid pictures and the perspective is at the right angle - from a worms-eye view. My areas for improvement would be to make my shoot better by taking some more accurate images that properly emulate the work of Kevin St Grey. Also, I researched the work of Reynald Drouhin for my work on Composition 1. I was inspired by his work as I feel it summarises the theme of Urban Environment. I feel this is because his work has used digital editing and has a focal point being the abstract shape in the middle of the image. His images are taken with a large depth of field so that you can see all of the details in the subject of the image an the whole background, landscape of the image. His images can be described as having restful composition as it is easy going The important knowledge, skills and understanding I have gained in his project would be things like digitally editing images to mark out a shape in the middle of the image and then flipping it half way and restful and dynamic compositions. Through studying this photographer, I was able to explore concepts of shape, proportion and form. I feel my most successful outcome of the project would be the edits of my shoot. I think this because they are well laid pictures and the shape in the middle of the image is central which makes the image look more proportional. My areas for improvement would be to make my shoot better and more accurate to the way the photographer takes his images. . Finally, I researched the work of Stephanie Jung for my work on Composition 2. I was inspired by her work as I feel it epitomizes the theme of Urban Environment. I feel this is because her work has used overlaying and duplicate layers with a lower opacity to make it more visible for you to see the layers.. Her images are taken with a large depth of field so that you can see all of the details in the subject of the image. Her images can be described as easy going and serene. His images can also be described as having restful composition. The important knowledge, skills and understanding I have gained in his project would be things like digitally editing images to make them look like double and triple vision through the media of masking and adding background layers and restful and dynamic compositions. Through studying this photographer, I was able to explore concepts of shape, repetition and form. I feel my most successful outcome of the project would be the edits of my shoot. I think this because they are well laid pictures and double vision effect comes off the way it is supposed to look. My areas for improvement would be to make my shoot better by making my images look like closer emulations of the photographers images.
