I researched various schools. Mizzou’s reputation, online program, national ranking, accreditation, tuition rate and military-friendliness were all deciding factors. The University of Missouri was the best fit for me. Joseph D. Osmack – Jacksonville, N.C. From financ s to the final in erview, these online resources are great places to plan your future.

Department of Labor • The Department of Labor has various online tools that can help with veterans’ transition to civilian life and more. If you’re seeking an apprenticeship for on-the-job-training and incremental wage increases, visit the Veterans’ Employment and Training Services (VETS) page on the labor department’s website. In 2015, the department invested a large amount in apprentice grants through the American Apprenticeship competition. The website also gives you access to the My Next Move, Gold Card, Veterans Employment Center, and Career One Stop employment initiatives. dol.gov/vets

The website has school and career search tools and several articles that explore careers and the transition into civilian life. GI Jobs is independent of the US military. Take the transition readiness quiz to evaluate your plan for an education path and career after your military service is complete. GI Jobs also rates the hottest jobs for veterans every year by conducting an employer survey. GIJobs.com

Missouri’s Returning Heroes Education Act • This act ensures that public post-secondary schools in Missouri cannot charge more than $50 per credit hour. Missouri’s Returning Heroes Act combined with the Montgomery GI Bill could give applicants the most amount of financial assistance for the longest period of time, according to the University of Missouri Veterans Center. You are eligible for this financial assistance if you have US veteran status or served for more than thirty days in a US Department of Defense armed combat zone, since September 11, 2001. You are also eligible if you were a Missouri resident when you entered the military, were honorably discharged, and are enrolled in a degree-seeking program as an undergraduate. The maximum award amount is based on current enrollment and additional financial assistance. Aid that goes toward tuition and fees, such as grants and scholarships, is subtracted from the total. The tuition and fees that exceed $50 per credit hour are waived. Each semester, students must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5.

The US military employs all types of professionals, including veternarians.

Digging into the GI Bill Veterans are defined by the government as those who have served on regular active duty through normal enlistment or those called by the president to serve on active duty. You are either a wartime veteran or a peacetime veteran. If you have any questions concerning that status, visit your nearest service office There are many benefits available to help veterans transition back to civilian life. The Montgomery GI Bill is probably one of the most important and useful benefits available to our service men and women. Here are some of the most important chapters and the qualifications needed to benefit the most f om the GI Bill: Chapter 30, Active D uty: This bill is for those who have served for at least thirtysix months on active duty and were honorably discharged. Those who qualify will receive up to thirty-six months of benefits and twelve months of Chapter 33 benefits after the Chapter 30 benefits are exhausted. Chapter 1606, Selected Reserve: This bill is for reservists who have not been deployed and have a six-year obligation. Those who qualify are required to have completed basic training and advanced individual training. Qualifying veterans will receive up to thirty-six months of benefits and are eligible for tuition assistance after basic training. Chapter 1607, Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP): This program is for reservists or guardsmen who have served in combat. Those who enter active service while in the selected reserve are entitled to REAP benefits if they continue service in the selected reserve. Those who qualify can receive up to thirty-six months of benefits and, after these are exhausted, an additional twelve months of Chapter 33 benefits

GIJobs.com and USA Today listed health care workers among of the top jobs for veterans and civilians in 2015.

Chapter 31, Vocational Rehabilitation Program: Veterans who have service-related disabilities of more than the 10 percent rating are eligible and will be assigned to a vocational rehabilitation counselor. Tuition, fees, books, school supplies, and a stipend are covered. The program requires a separate application from other GI benefits Chapter 35, Survivors and D ependents Educational Assistance Program (D EA): Dependents of veterans who have a 100 percent disability rating from their service or dependents of veterans who are deceased can receive assistance for up to forty-five months Chapter 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill: Military personnel who had at least ninety days of aggregate service after September 10, 2001 qualify, as do those who develop disabilities connected to their service after thirty days. This bill pays the highest toward public in-

stitutions for those who live in and attend school in Missouri, and recipients can receive up to thirty-six months of benefits. It is transferable to dependents, among other advantages. The Yellow Ribbon Program: While the Post-9/11 GI Bill covers resident tuition and fees for a public schools, private schools’ tuition and fees and non-resident costs at public schools may exceed the bill’s benefits. The Yellow Ribbon Program allows degree granting institutions to voluntarily make additional funds available to cover the difference without an additional charge to the GI entitlement. A partner VA matches the amount contributed. Missouri has forty-one VA service officers divided into five regions across the state that can help you understand your VA benefits. T

he State of Missouri acknowledges the great burdens and sacrifices our Armed Forces and their families have made in order to preserve our national security. Our businesses also recognize that Veterans and members of our National Guard and Reserve possess the degree of training, education, motivation, and character that will prove vital to Missouri’s economic future. We provide a number of services to Veterans and spouses to transition them to employment when they return home from service.

Missouri Job Centers

Staff at Missouri Job Centers throughout the state provide career guidance as well as one-onone assistance for those who have exhausted the resources designed to meet the most common employment challenges. If you are a Veteran or spouse of a Veteran, you may also be eligible to meet with a Disabled Veterans Outreach Program representative for further assistance.

Veteran services provided by Missouri Job Centers: • Help translating your military skills to civilian workforce skills • Help identifying & applying for jobs • Labor market information & resources • Employment focused workshops • Help developing résumé & cover letter • Interview preparation • Testing and attainment of the National Career Readiness Certificate • Telephone, fax, printer and copier usage • Referrals to supportive service agencies

Hear from Hired Heroes

“When I came in, they said ‘we want you as a Veteran, because we know your work ethic, and we know your abilities to accomplish the task at hand.’” -John Breuer, Marine Corps Veteran “Veterans give so much every day, whether they are deployed or not. They’re always sacrificing something – time – energy – anything. So for them to get out of the military, and have a company like (Toyota) Bodine looking for Veterans to hire, gives them a step forward to continue to support themselves and their family.” -Eric Riter, Army Veteran “A lot of people talk about the sacrifices that Veterans made, and it’s absolutely true. When you talk about the missed birthdays, you talk about the missed anniversaries. Being able to offer this program and at least say ‘hey, you know what, we are going to recognize that sacrifice, and we’re going to bring you in and at least consider you for a job.’” -Jack Williams, Air Force Veteran “You need to hire Veterans first. They have unique skills and typically can get more done in a workplace. Anybody that can put their life on the line for their country, deserves to have the first shot at any job.” -Joe Narigon, Army Veteran and employer

Missouri Division of Workforce Development is an equal opportunity employer/program. Auxiliary aids and services are available upon request to individuals with disabilities. Missouri TTY users can call (800) 735-2966 or dial 7-1-1. 10  OPPORTUNITIES FOR MISSOURI HEROES

In this year’s guide, we compiled a list of institutes across the state with key facts we felt were useful. For adult students, we included information on weekend and evening courses, online learning, and campus child care. For our veterans, we listed schools that are part of the Yellow Ribbon Program. For traditional students, we included important figures on acceptance rates, cost, aid packages, and student populations.

Military Friendly.

On Purpose. Grantham University has been a leader in adult learning since 1951 … especially for our military. In fact, we have a reputation for being a military-friendly school. At least, that’s what we keep hearing from military-supporting organizations who say things like “best for vets” and “military and veteran friendly.” More importantly, it’s also what we hear from our military students.

Serving those who serve® for 65 years. And still going strong.

Spanning the globe At Harding University we don’t just talk about global experiences, we provide them. At seven international campuses spanning five continents, Harding students spend a semester studying outside the realm of a traditional classroom encountering different cultures, historic sites, foreign languages and amazing architecture. Nearly 50 percent of students in each graduating class have attended one or more of the international programs, which provide a Christian worldview.
