CLOCK TOWER LEGEND When walking under the Clock Tower, walk around the seal. Legend has it if a student steps on the seal, he or she won’t graduate. After graduation seniors walk over the seal.

FIGHT SONG The fight song is played by the band and sung before the game and after every touchdown.

FIRE THE CANNON At the beginning of every football game and on every touchdown a cannon is fired. FIRST DOWN CHANT M.W.S.U.

RALLY TOWELS Missouri Western has black and gold rally towels out and swinging in the air on the 3rd and 4th downs.

THE VICTORY TREE After every home football victory, teammates, coaches, students and fans gather around the Victory Tree to hear a post-game speech from the coach, followed by the Fight Song. 11

Theater & Cinema

“The best way to help transition from high school to college is to find a way to get involved in any activity that interests you. I got involved with theatre productions at Missouri Western and have had a blast meeting people and love getting the opportunity to act. I have been in seven productions and hopefully four more this year!”

Transitioning tips from high school to college • Review each course syllabus and enter due dates for tests, papers and assignments in your calendar. • Go to class! By not attending class, you may miss out on cues to what the professor thinks is important. • Sit as close to the front of the room in each class. You will be more focused and have a better chance of the professor knowing who you are.

• Get to know your professors. All professors hold office hours each week and this is a great time to meet your professor and develop relationships that can pay off later when you need help with a recommendation, scholarship or job.

14

TRA

• Get to know other students in your classes. You can work together in a study group to discuss material presented in class and prepare for exams.

• Manage your time wisely. You have more time to yourself in college, so make sure your academics come first. • Take advantage of services on campus that are here to support your academic success. Missouri Western offers free tutoring and studying tips in the Center for Academic Support. • Get involved in campus life. College is about finding yourself and meeting new people. • Most importantly, have fun! College is a chance to branch out, learn more about the world and yourself, and prepare for your future.

“This is the beginning. The moment you step foot on campus you’re rooted. You’ll plant your seeds and build your foundation and watch your life grow. Your roots will link and blend and weave together. You’ll create connections. Reach out to as many people as you can. You may be surprised by how many will reach back. Nurture relationships that help you grow. Chase what makes you truly happy and dream big because this is your chance. As you’re walking the concrete path from one brick building to another, passing through the trees, don’t be afraid to leave your mark. Leave a trail, a path, a memory, and plant your roots in a community that wants you to succeed. These buildings, this place, these people, will be your core, your family and your roots.” Sarah Hatten, Griffon Alum ’12
