“He is looking at himself. He is seeing through me to himself”
I look at myself in the mirror and see I am not looking back at myself. I am seeing him. I am seeing him looking at me, looking through me to himself, to see the reflection in his eyes of himself looking at himself through me. I vanish then, for it is not true we all see what we wish. I look at him in the mirror and see he is not looking back at me. He is looking at himself. He is seeing through me to himself. I vanish once again.
I turn my back to the mirror, and I sense he has done so, too. I cannot be certain, but I think he has. I wonder if he is waiting for me to turn. I wonder if I turn who’s eyes will meet who’s eyes, who will be looking through who’s eyes to whom. I dare not turn, for I know I will vanish.
