Editor’s Note
This is my absolute favorite time of the year. As much as I enjoy sunshine, lazy
days, and a glass of limoncello, I positively adore fall. As soon as Labor Day passes, I feel like I’m allowed to start making pumpkin-flavored goodies, shop for boots, and pull out my fall wreath to hang on my front door. For me, the season kicks off with applepicking, as September is usually the prime time for apples. Even though there are apple orchards about 30 minutes from where I live, I choose to drive about an hour and a half away to a small town called Julian. It looks like a pioneer town that you’d find during the Gold Rush. It’s historic, quaint, and famous for its scrumptious apple pies. Midway through the month, I start buying boots for the fall and winter seasons. It’s usually too warm to actually wear them in September, so I satisfy my love of boots by trying on shiny, new ones in the store and staring at them in their tissue-wrapped box when I get home. Obsessed? Totally. When I’m not thinking of the many outfits I can wear with my new boots, I’m watching live streams of all the runway shows during New York Fashion Week. When I worked in New York City, I had the opportunity to attend N.Y.F.W., and let me tell you, it’s as exhilerating as you imagine it to be. Thanks to modern technology, however, we can still join in on the excitement by watching online videos of each runway. I’m also grateful for my homemade pumpkin spice latte, which I’m drinking as I sit here and type this letter. After finding out about how unhealthy some of the ingredients in the original version are, I decided to start making mine at home. It’s so yummy and so much better for you, so I made sure to include that recipe this month. I hope you guys have a beautiful start to your fall season and enjoy this issue!

Miss Sophisticate is
reading... “My Paris Story” by The Paris Women of Success It’s a pretty scary thing to leave behind your
comfort bubble, where all your family, friends, and everything you’ve known reside, to move across the world to a new city. My Paris Story is a collection of mémoires written by various women who decided to move to Paris to experience a different life than the one they were accustomed to. They share the ups and downs of their experiences and, simultaneously, give a healthy dose of inspiration and courage to readers.

watching... This Is Where I Leave You When their father passes away, four grown
siblings, bruised and banged up by their respective adult lives, are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof together for a week, along with their over-sharing mother and an assortment of spouses, exes and might-have-beens. Confronting their history and the frayed states of their relationships among the people who know and love them best, they ultimately reconnect in hysterical and emotionally affecting ways amid the chaos, humor, heartache and redemption that only families can provide-driving us insane even as they remind us of our truest, and often best, selves. in case you happen to be in New York
City for N.Y.F.W., then make sure you stop by Isola to grab a bite to eat. The restaurant is inside the Mondrian Hotel in Soho, NYC. You might recognize the restaurant from the film, The Other Woman, which is where the three main stars of the film gathered together for drinks in the final scene. The restaurant is a memorable place because of its lush, green interiors. Among crystal chanedliers and counterheight dining tables, you’ll find lots of green plants and trees, creating a greenhouse-type atmosphere. It’s a welcome change and place of retreat in the concrete jungle of New York City. But just because the restaurant brings in 16

a little bit of nature, don’t expect anything less than glamour and sophistication for your experience. Food and drinks are superb and made by native Sicilian and executive chef, Victor LaPlaca. The atmosphere and menu are inspired by the Amalfi Coast and Italian Riviera, making your entire experience at the restaurant elegant and spirited in that Italian way. Favorites at the restaurant include the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes from the brunch menu and Short Rib Cavatelli from the dinner menu. Make sure you make a reservation ahead of time as it can get quite busy, especially during weekends and Sunday brunch. www.isolasoho.com 9 Crosby Street, New York, NY 10013

Pumpkin Spice Latte
The Pumpkin Spice Latte
Making a healthier version at home
Starbucks’s famous Pumpkin Spice Latte has gathered such a huge following over
the years that the fall favorite has obtained its own Twitter and Tumblr accounts. Most recently, however, it was discovered that this popular beverage contains many harmful chemicals in the pumpkin spice syrup used to flavor the drink. Among these chemicals include caramel color, an additive that’s been known to increase the risk of cancer. As delicious as the pumpkin spice latte is, until Starbucks reformulates its ingredients, it might be best to stay away from the drink. But skipping an order of the “PSL,” as it’s been so famously dubbed, doesn’t have to mean you can’t enjoy a pumpkin spice latte at all. The beverage can easily be made at home thanks to the magical pantry item, pumpkin pie spice. On the following page, you’ll find a quick and easy recipe that contains all natural ingredients and comes in at about 100 calories less than the original. Now that’s something we can all get onboard with! 18
Miss Sophisticate
How to Make A Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte Ingredients (makes 4 servings): • 2 cups of reduced fat milk (2%) • 4 tablespoons of pure pumpkin (make sure you get pure pumpkin and not pumpkin pie filling) • 3 1/2 tablespoons of sugar • 1/2 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice • 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract • 2 cups of strong, freshly brewed coffee • whipped cream + ground cinnamon for topping (optional) Directions: 1. In a small saucepan over low heat, warm your milk, pumpkin puree, sugar, and spices. Whisk until everything is dissolved and combined. Use a spoon to test sweetness. If you want it sweeter, add more sugar to taste. 2. Once the pumpkin milk is hot, remove the pan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. At this point, you can also use your cappuccino maker’s froth nozzle to create a frothy mixture from your pumpkin milk. Otherwise, just skip ahead to the next step. 3. Pour half a cup of your brewed coffee into each mug and about half a cup of the pumpkin milk mixture to it. Top with whipped cream and a slight sprinkle of cinnamon.

fall Decor
6 Ways to Bring Fall into your home Easy Swaps & Buys While people like Martha Stewart and Sandra Lee can make decorating your
home into a majestic fall display look easy, it’s often times much more difficult and time-consuming to do such. It can be much easier to add in a few small items into your living space by either purchasing, making, or using items you already have to create an ambiance of fall cozyness. Arts and crafts stores like Michaels are a great resource for those of you who love to do DIY projects. A candle, glass vase, and some acorns can be transformed into a lovely fall centerpiece. If you prefer using handmade items without doing the work yourself, Etsy always provides access to a variety of artisans. Most Etsy sellers offer unique, handmade items for affordable prices. For some items, like a luxurious throw that can be used year-round, it might be worth the investment to purchase from home stores like Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware. Check out the following page for six easy ways that can help you turn your home into a warm, fall retreat.

East Coast Barn Edgartown, MA, United States (Images courtesy of PatrickAhearn.com)
The goal for this month’s house hunting
edition was to find a warm and inviting place that anyone could see themselves cozying up in during the crisp, fall season. This quintessential barn in Edgartown, MA fit the bill perfectly. The home was designed by famed architect, Patrick Ahearn, who’s portolio includes properties in Martha’s Vineyard, Osterville, and Boston to name a few. The home is surrounded by lush greenery, which we can imagine would be even more stunning when the leaves start changing colors. The interior decor of the home features barn-style furniture with wooden tables and linen fabrics. There’s ample use of red, a signature barn color, as well as plaid and stripe patterns. Stone fireplaces and exposed beams are useful in tying the surrounding nature with the inside of the home, and provide a nice juxtaposition to the plush sofas and rugs. There’s also plenty of land to start a large garden, should you decide to do so. Or, if you own any farm animals or horses, you definitely have the room to build the stables. Ahearn has given the homeowner the chance to have endless possibilities, which is what we all want in our dream house, right?. To see more of Ahearn’s work, please visit: www.PatrickAhearn.com
Apple Picking in
Julian, CA
I
t’s funny how many special places there are around us that are yet to be visited and explored. This is particularly true for Southern California. Most people think of L.A. and beaches when they hear the word SoCal, but there are so many unique and hidden gems away from Hollywood and the coastline. As much as the cosmopolitan life has its perks, there’s something to be said about nature and its overwhelming beauty. Trips to the countryside are especially enamoring with regards to the changing seasons. Julian, which is about an hour and a half east of San Diego, is a small town that was established during the 19th century Gold Rush. It’s nestled among 24

among pine trees, apple orchards, and miles of greenery. September and October are some of the most popular months to visit Julian because of the abundance of fresh apples and famous apple pies. The town even hosts a large apple harvest festival during the beginning of October. Regardless of when you visit, however, you’re sure to enjoy an amazing slice of apple pie. There are a ton of bakeries for you to choose from, with the most popular bakery being Mom’s Pies. But even if you visit for a slice of mouthwatering pie, take advantage of the nearby apple orchards and pick your own apples. You’ll be collecting some of the sweetest apples that nature produces!
