MOSCONE CONVENTION

CENTER EXPANSION

The

Moscone

Expansion

project is an extraordinary effort by the City, the San Francisco Tourism Improvement

District

Management

Corporation, and hotel industry to expand existing convention center space. While it is one of the most succesful convention centers in the United States, Moscone Center is operating at capacity and is losing business to competing markets with more space to offer. This project will add more contiguous exhibiton space to Moscone Center, allowing it to remain competitive on a national scale. The expansion will add over 305,000 square feet of functional area, including new exhibition space, meeting room, prefunction space, ballroom space, and support areas.

Net Zero Water: 5,500,000+ gallons of ground and rainwater captured annually (equivalent to 8.5 olympic sized swimming pools) and reused for the Moscone Expansion’s toilet flushing and irrigation, as well as exported for San Francisco street cleaning and irrigation of Yerba Buena Gardens and fountains including the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial Fountain.

Ultra-tuned Mechanical HVAC system calibrated to Moscone’s on/off cycle of scheduled calendar events provides 100% fresh air for most of the year and enables a whole building energy savings of 30% to 40% below a convention center built to national code standards.

IMACAN is a dynamic location-based

mobile application available for Android. The application’s main purpose is for users to discover and explore street art in their neighborhood. The robust database of art is geotagged with the location of the pieces and includes metadata that provides information about the artist’s oeuvre and current projects. IMACAN was conceived as a subsidiary project to Site Unseen, LLC founded by myself, Alfred Chung and Dru Eldridge to explore travel-based applications. As lead designer, I created the graphics, wrote the copy and helped shape the brand and identity of the product.

Tower at PNC Plaza will become the

new headquarters for the sixth largest bank in North America. Currently, PNC holds the largest portfolio for LEED buildings in North America and continues to extend beyond the current trend to attain net zero buildings. These ambitions are embodied in the this building, which uses passive cooling and natural ventilation. A large solar chimney at the top helps to circulate the air through the mechanical system and the building’s skin is an efficient double wall that creates a thermal buffer to help mitigate the harsh Pittsburgh climate. The atrium that runs the length of the west wall is a large porch that provides an outdoor environment while keeping the precipitation out. With all these systems the new headquarters will be a benchmark for sustainability.

Every year tens of thousands of

individuals make the voyage to Black Rock City, NV to embrace art, invention and self reflection. In 2014, Justin Kan and I decided to build an art car to share our vision with the visitors and to create a sensorial experience for all that participated. The concept of the car was to formally create an iceberg, that would be visible during the day and night. To be visible at night we included 10,000 leds behind 300+ unique polycarbonate panels that would modulate in color and rhythm. I designed the entire project and produced the drawings, while coordinating the various volunteers that helped make the project possible.

This project was a competition to

design a new campus for Samsung in South Bay. The proposed building would house engineers and facilitate research for new mobile technologies. The main objective was to create a large floor plate that would foster collaborative interactions, but maintain low sight lines respecting the surrounding buildings. San Jose is notorious for having large asphalt parking lots due to commuters driving to and from work. We mitigated this unsightly appearance by burying the parking underneath the building. The architecture hopes to promote innovation through intimate spaces that allow for focused work, while expanding to larger spaces that allow collaboration and socialization.

75 HOWARD

06

75 Howard is a residential tower

located on the San Francisco waterfront. This prime location offers incredible views of the bay and an opportunity to convert a poorly used plaza into a pedestrian-friendly sculpture garden buffering the Embarcadero roadway. The project’s inspiration comes from the collapse of the Embarcadero highway after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The earthquake left much the of the city devastated but fell the Embarcadero highway offering the opportunity to reconnect the city to its waterfront. 75 Howard proposes to be the center to the Embarcadero waterfront connecting the new Warriors stadium and the Ferry Building to the north.

This confidential project was a

competition to house the new headquarters of a global bank. The bank had many programmatic needs, which included typical office floor plates, executive offices, but also trading floors. Trading floors offer unique problems, both structural and programmatic, simultaneously wanting a long column free space and large floor plates. To accommodate all the needs of the client a complex vertical transportation system was designed requiring multiple lobbies at the ground level, podium and tower. The building also offers unique meeting rooms spaces that project from the podium levels providing extraordinary views of the city during client presentations.
