THE MAIN DRIVER BEHIND THIS PROJECT IS TIME, SPECIFICALLY ARCHITECTURE AS A WAY TO VIVIFY THE PASSING OF TIME BY MEANS OF SITE, PROGRAM, AND FORM. THE BUILDING AND THE SURROUNDING SITE IMPLEMENTATION SHOULD ALL ENHANCE THIS PERCEPTION OF TIME PASSING. FOR THIS TO HAPPEN, THERE MUST BE THINGS WITHIN THE ARCHITECTURE THAT ALLOW FOR THE PASSING OF TIME TO BE MEASURED AGAINST. THE ORIGINAL FRESH WATER BAYOU WAS WIDENED AND DREDGED TO ACCOMMODATE BOAT TRAFFIC FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO TO THE INTERCOASTAL CANAL. THE SURROUNDING MARSHES WERE USED FOR OIL EXPLORATION, AND A LOCK SYSTEM WAS PLACED AT THE CHANNEL ENTRANCE TO CONTROL THE FLOW OF SALT WATER FROM THE GULF INTO THE FRESH WATER MARSHES THAT THE SHALLOW CANAL USED TO PROTECT. THE REOCCURRING CONCRETE FOOTINGS ARE SPACED OUT 15 FEET ORIENT THE VIEWER IN ANY LOCATION OF THE BUILDING TO THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE. THESE CONCRETE FOOTINGS ALSO ACT AS A MARKER FOR THE CHANGING OF THE TIDES AND THE BUILDUP OF THE SHORELINE WHICH TIE INTO LARGER IDEAS OF TIME LAYERED WITH IN THE SITE. THE TRANSLUCENT CONCRETE FLOODGATES ACT AS A CANVAS THAT TRANSMIT SHADOWS INTO THE GALLERY OF THE SCIREC CENTER AND TAKE INSPIRATION FROM THE WATER CONTROL STRUCTURES. THE BUILDING IN THE EVENT OF A HIGH FLOODING FROM STORM SURGE OPENS FLOOD GATES THAT ARE SITUATED WITH IN THE WALLS TO ALLOW THE PASSAGE OF WATER THROUGH THE FLOOD LOWER LEVELS TO PRESERVE THE STRUCTURAL CAPABILITIES OF THE BUILDING. WHEN THE FLOOD WATERS RECEDE CLEAN UP CAN BEGIN AND CONCRETE AND BARGRATING FLOORS CAN BE CLEARED OF DEBRIS.

THE NODAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECT IS A PROJECT FOR THE PROJECTED GROWTH OF NORTH UNIVERSITY FROM LAFAYETTE TO CARENCRO. THE MASTER PLAN FOR THIS DEVELOPMENT TAKES INTO CONSIDERATION A PROPOSED EXPANSION OF N UNIVERSITY AS WELL AS ITS HISTORY FOR FLASH FLOODING, AND UTILIZES NATURAL STORM-WATER MITIGATION PROCESS TO DIVERT WATER TO DETENTION PONDS AND AWAY FROM URBAN AREAS. THESE AREAS OF WATER DETENTION ARE LOCATED ALONG THE GREEN BELT THAT WEAVES THROUGHOUT THE DEVELOPMENT AND LINKS THE NODES TOGETHER. THE BUILDING IS A QUICK SCHEMATIC DESIGN FOR A MIXED-USE RESTAURANT AND OFFICE BUILDING. THE RESTAURANT’S KITCHEN IS EXPOSED TO THE MAIN DINING AREA WITH ITS EXTERIOR DECK TERRACING TOWARDS NEARBY VEGETATION AND A NATURAL DRAINAGE COULEE. ALL STORM WATER RUNOFF IS SLOWED BY GREEN ROOF TERRACES AND PLANTERS THAT GRADUALLY ALLOW WATER TO DRAIN TO THE COULEE. THIS TERRACING OF GREENERY ALSO HELPS THE BUILDING GRADIENT FROM THE HARD SURFACES OF URBAN COMMERCIAL TO THE SOFTER TEXTURES OF THE HOUSING NEIGHBORHOOD LOCATED ACROSS THE GREEN BELT. .

THE BUILDING IS CLAD IN A CYPRESS RAIN SCREEN THAT TRANSITIONS TO A SUNSHADE DEVICE WHEN WINDOWS ARE INTRODUCED. A CENTRAL ATRIUM CONNECTS THE FOUR FLOORS OF EXHIBITION SPACE AND EXPOSES THE HEAVY TIMBER CONSTRUCTION. CONNECTION
The people of SAAVEDRA, CHILE have moved to higher land to avoid TSUNAMI FLOODING, in which the original URBAN CORE is succeptable to. Because of this, the municipality has SPLIT INTO FIVE SETTLEMENTS that are DISCONNECTED in geography, program, and demography. With CULTURAL TOURISM being a heavy driving force in Saavedra’s economy, heavy emphasis is put on developing green spaces so that they can be used by both the TOURISTS AND LOCALS. The continuation of the LINEAR PARK along the coast of the lagoon helps connect Saavedra’s urban core to its amazing landscapes and also helps MITIGATE TSUNAMI DAMAGE by acting as a BREAK WATER. Implementing a new bus route that includes stops and a new bus depot shortens the distance between the five areas as well.
