GRADUATE THESIS Ongiong Project

The study began with thoughts about designing a room based on the architectural elements stair, column, and wall. The room’s program was not the focus but rather the testing of what spacial interactions could occur between these elements. Through drawing and modeling, this room took various forms and the thesis began to develop questions about designing alongside existing conditions of a space. A site was selected in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania which is host to an industrial smokestack and a thirty foot retaining wall. With the selection of an urban site, further questions were developed regarding a building’s influence on its urban surroundings. Is a building simply placed in an environment and subject to pre-existing conditions or does it have the opportunity to influence change throughout its surroundings?

03

DOWNTOWN BLACKSBURG BOUTIQUE HOTEL Blacksburg, VA

Advanced Design Lab Summer 2016 The project is a small 18 room hotel located on a 32’x112’ site that was to include a penthouse suite and small restaurant. With such a narrow site, the building immediately required a single-loaded corridor design. Section models were created and photographed to emulate the order of construction for this building type. This process allowed for the study of structural design in a modular building.

04

THE CUBIC APARTMENT Blacksburg, VA

Graduate Arch & Systems Lab Spring 2016 Beginning with an analysis of architectural elements, a three story, two bedroom student apartment was designed. This project focused on W.G. Clark’s Clark House and the cube’s influence in architecture. An 18’x18’ cube served as the initial form to the building. Through a process of doubling, the cube formed the main living area of the apartment and influenced the stair as a key figure to the building.

05

THE MUSICIAN’S STUDIO

Graduate Arch & Systems Lab Fall 2015 Each student selected a 40’x30’ site within a grided system. A variable condition existed on each site and students selected a type of artist. Sites were connected with 6’ pathways and had to be separated with surrounding concrete walls. Through a series of diagramatic studies, the given site conditions was used as symbolic concrete wall amidst a wooden structure. The concrete walls were designed in relationship to neighboring sites as well as to window locations along the building.

07

A HOLE IN A CUBE

Qualifying Design Lab Fall 2014 The ideology of the cube is something architects have studied for centuries. To explore its form, a 9” x 9” x 9” hardwood cube made with 9 layers had to include a hole. The project explores how space is made within a volumetric solid and tests the geometric qualities of the cube when a shift occurs between parts.

THE LAST REPOSE FUNERAL HOME AND CEMETERY Pittsburgh, PA

Undergraduate Design Studio Fall 2013 The Last Repose is a locally owned resting place located on Pittsburgh’s iconic Mount Washington. The project included five tombs, a funeral home, and a temple. Using deconstructed components designed throughout the semester, habitable spaces were formed. The user is guided along a winding path the runs along the center of the site to allow a period of reflection before encountering the tomb of a friend or loved one. Once completed, the journey moves below ground in order to access the tomb. After final goodbyes have been said, the user exits and is guided north, to overlook the city of Pittsburgh and prepare to go forward in their path of life.
