CONSTRUCTING ENVIRONMENTS A02 INTERIM SUBMISSION | MITCHELL SU | STUDENT ID No. 660192 | SEMESTER 2/2013
STRUCTURE CONCEPT The structure concept of this design is to run a single main roof span across the majority of the existing structure. A smaller roof is to be augmented onto the bathroom and utility area. The roofs will all have a pitch of 7°. 1. MAIN SUPPORT BEAMS
The two main support beams will run parallel to each other and sit atop the existing structure. 2. STUDS Studs will act as load bearing vertical members that are at varying heights. The existing studs in the structure have been
retained and extended hence the unusual diameters. 3. JOISTS The joists will be span continuously across between two beams at uneven spacing. The spacing is determined by the position of the studs.
4. MAIN AWNING The main awning will be extended further off the roof to cover the deck area by 2.5m. 5. OTHER AWNINGS The other awnings will cover an extra 0.3m from the roof’s main span.

MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION
GALVANIZED LIGHT STEEL GAUGE FRAMING (NO NAME N.D.)
STRAMIT CAPACITYPLUS DEEP ROOF CLADDING (STRAMIT 2013)
THERMAL WOOL BLANKET INSULATION (MARESS SUPPLY 2013)
WHY IT WILL BE USED The material is considerably strong and is also light at the same time. The integrity of the material means little or no bracing is required apart from the base frame, permitting a very thin and light roof structure. This will prevent the roof from having a significant load impact from the rest of the structure.
WHY IT WILL BE USED This roof cladding has a low pitch requirement allowing for a more subtle slope design (1째) while still meeting weather requirements in Kempsey (Stramit 2013). At the same time the cladding has been designed to take in a large volume of rainfall which is also a concern in Kempsey (BOM 2013).
WHY IT WILL BE USED Thermal wool blanket is a natural insulator that has excellent water retention abilities in the event of water permeating through the roof. It is also more sustainable as an insulator due to its natural origin. It also retains heat very well during winter and vice versa for heat during summer.
HOW IT WILL BE USED The steel frame will be prefabricated and brought onto the site. Minimal assembly beyond prefabrication will be required with most of the assembly required being to do with final fixtures such as cladding.
HOW IT WILL BE USED The roof cladding will be placed in-situ with the rest of the roof assembly that is required on site. However, it may be possible to construct this in a prefabricated fashion like the steel frame. The color selection of the roof cladding will be light to increase reflectivity of the roof in order to reduce thermal conductivity.
HOW IT WILL BE USED The insulation will be done prefabricated with the rest of the steel frame to decrease construction time. it will be placed in between the roof cladding and ceiling cladding.
TREATED OAK (BOONE VALLEY 2010) WHY IT WILL BE USED This will be used to clad the external and internal ceilings to preserve the aesthetic appearance of the of the existing structure. The oak timber will be treated to ensure durability from the elements. HOW IT WILL BE USED The timber oak cladding will be added insitu during construction after the main structure of the roof has been placed and the roof cladded and waterproofed.
AESTHETICS AND FUNCTION THE AESTHETICS OF THE STRUCTURE FOCUS ON THE SINGLE ROOF SPAN THAT IS COMPOSED OF SMOOTH, SWEEPING CLEAN LINES. THE MAIN ROOF SPAN COVERS THE MAJORITY OF THE BUILDING WITH AN EXTRA SPAN THAT COVERS ANOTHER PART OF THE BUILDING. THE FUNCTION OF THE STRUCTURE LIES IN THE USE OF LIGHT BUT STRONG MATERIALS THAT GIVE THE ROOF A SLENDER PROFILE With the roof, the single span simplifies the appearance of the structure, complementing well with austere appearance of the rest of the structure. The roof itself also serves a function in that the steel frame allows for a very thin and demure profile without much loss in structural integrity. The steel frame distributes loads onto the wooden timber frames initially from the joists and onto the studs. There is no extra bracing on the frame as the steel frame should provide enough resistance from lateral forces and vertical loads. The roof itself is light enough that no significant vertical load should come from it apart from during heavy rainfall. Within the roof, wool insulation has been used to compensate for the use of a steel and its high thermal conductivity. This is further enhanced by the use of a light color on the roof’s treatment to increase reflectivity.
