From The Executive Director Welcome to Mitchell Conservatorium’s Major Events for 2015 2014 saw a year of great diversity in our public performance schedule, and this year will be no less varied. We believe that Mit Con is ideally placed to both complement the broader performing arts programming across our region, and to take the lead on creating opportunities for performers and audiences alike to engage with experiences that would otherwise simply not take place. With that view, we are proud to be collaborating on a number of events with the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre, as well strengthening our ties as co-presenters with Councils in Lithgow, Forbes and Parkes. This year also sees a greater representation of our own professional performers - through recitals, Chamber Music Academy activity, and the Mitchell Chamber Orchestra. Formed in 2014 as part of the overwhelmingly successful Touchstones Song Cycle project, MCO will be collaborating this year with international piano soloist, Avan Yu, in a concerto program hosted by BMEC on May 12. Return favourites, again appearing in Lithgow, Forbes, Molong and Bathurst, include Mit Con’s official visiting resident artists, Omega Ensemble, led by their wonderfully talented Artistic Director, David Rowden. We also welcome the renowned Seraphim Trio in March, look forward to a new, expanded, series of lunchtime concerts across the divisions, and are proud to be bringing the dynamic Andrew Robson Quartet back to the region with a schedule of workshops and concert performances at the River Arts Festival (Forbes) and the Inland Sea of Sound festival in Bathurst. The Inland Sea of Sound was developed by BMEC and our own Aaron Hopper in 2010 and this year the festival will expand to include a greater number of artists across all genres.

Community concerts also make up an important part of our performance program so feel free to attend these low cost or free lunchtime recital series. Without taking up way too much space, however, I can’t possibly mention everything that appears in the following pages (the above is merely a tease), so… please interrogate the following pages, make plenty of diary entries, tell all your friends, and we’ll see you there! Seraphim Trio’s 2015 recital series pivots on Beethoven’s entire oeuvre of piano trios. Seraphim is well known for preparing musical programs as one would a feast: pairing works for their combined effect, for textural balance and contextual logic as well as intrinsic beauty. Beethoven and Beyond
Beethoven and his eccentric life, the depths of emotion in his music, and his profound deafness have long made him a figure of fascination. Pianist Cindy Fox continues this fascination, exploring the sonata (including the Moonlight and Pathetique) in an overview of Beethoven’s musical development. The program also includes Schumann’s Scenes from Childhood, Takemitsu’s Rain Tree Sketch II and Ross Edwards’ Mantras and Night Flowers.

Two Cellos
Georg Mertens and Ella Jamieson will perform No 5 and 9 from the beautiful 9 cello Sonatas by Vivaldi, the most beloved of Italian composers. The Sonatas are shared with cello Duo No 1 by August Kummer, the king of Classical cello duo music, injecting an amazing inventiveness and wit into the interactive collaboration of the cellos, along with J.S.Bach’s, Prelude, Allemande and Bourree from Lute Suite No 1, transcribed by Georg for two cellos – a world premiere!

This special performance will feature a rare opportunity to hear an 1814 cello, believed to have belonged to Mrs Elizabeth Macquarie (from the Museum of Sydney collection), played by David Pereira, one of Australia’s most accomplished cellists. Artists react to the people and places that surround them; creating works that represent a diversity of contexts. Evoking seas, skies, and the landscapes in between, this program showcases the responses of some of Australia’s eminent composers, past and present. Avan Yu and the Mitchell Chamber Orchestra Favourite Piano Concertos
A recital by Avan Yu was a highlight of the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre 2014 Season prompting an invitation for him to return in 2015. Joining Avun will be the Mitchell Chamber Orchestra, western New South Wales’ newest professional chamber orchestra, the flagship ensemble of the Mitchell Conservatorium Chamber Music Academy. With a core of MitCon professional staff members and advanced students, the orchestra also engages guest artists from across the conservatorium’s broad range of professional relationships, as required on a per program basis. The orchestra’s inaugural outing was as part of the Touchstones Song Cycle Project (2014) with The Andrew Robson
Quartet and Richard Gill OAM. That project included a collaboration with BMEC Local Stages on a highly successful free community forum, alongside concert performances in Bathurst, Orange and Sydney. Conductor: Ben Macpherson OAM

The Moon’s a Balloon Patch Theatre
A balloon can be a friend to play with or a maker of friendships. It can hold its breath for days and disappear in an instant. It can make your hair stand on end and fill you with laughter. A balloon can be something loved or something lost; something shared or something broken. A balloon can be anything you need it to be.
Exploration, play and invention are at the heart of the way children make friends. The Moon’s a Balloon celebrates balloons, play and friendship in a visual-theatrefest of music, image, light and story that will delight and inspire the hearts and minds of 4-8 year olds and their carers. Audiences are invited to participate as choristers in our performance and contribute to the making of a giant “wOtbe thing” in our theatre foyer.

The Evolving Flute
Flautist Phil Braithwaite and Pianist Cindy Fox explore the development of the flute from the Baroque through to the modern period: along with the extended techniques exploited by modern composers.
