URING MY FIVE YEARS with Crooked Tree Arts Center, the organization has produced three Art News newsletters each year. I have held the position of Newsletter Editor since 2016, and during those two years I have assembled six editions of Art News. This fall, Crooked Tree Arts Center and I have decided to refine our efforts and create two spectacular newsletters a year, instead of three. This adjustment allows us to present the most important details for our readers and members. We will include more feature stories on CTAC instructors, alumni, supporters of the arts, as well as minifeatures that highlight upcoming performers, education opportunities, and exciting events. This newsletter covers the months of October 2018–March 2019. Our next newsletter will cover the 2019 summer season. Specialized flyers and announcements will supplement our newsletters, covering the spring months and additional holiday activities that CTAC hosts each year. As always, our website includes details about classes, workshops, lectures, and events—our newsletter serves as a jumping off point for our readers, while the website has it all!

EACH FALL, WE CELEBRATE the enormous efforts of our board of directors. At our annual meeting, we honored Tony Ryner as Volunteer of the Year—a well-deserved acknowledgment of his dedication to CTAC. We also thanked our outgoing board members, Dan Ledingham and Gail Willens for their years of service. Both provided their guidance as officers—Dan led us as Chairman for 2017-2018 and Gail as Secretary for 2016-2018. We’ve got some new faces on the board, with a full list of board members included on the inside back cover of this newsletter. Our new officers are fully engaged to lead us these next few years as we update our Strategic Plan, review policies, manage our growth, and explore new programs. Now is the time to join a committee and perhaps take a deeper role with your arts center— we’d be pleased to meet with you and chat about how you can serve CTAC. – Liz Ahrens, President/Executive Director Heidi Geiger, Chairman

BEATING THE WINTER BLUES WITH THE CHARLIE MILLARD BAND

D

ESCRIBED AS A melding of Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, and Rufus Wainwright, The Charlie Millard Band is known throughout Northern Michigan for its original, soulful songs, centered around its namesake’s masterful pianoplaying. Charlie Millard, a lifelong musician, has been out in the world playing piano since the young age of 14. For the past two and a half years, he has been performing as onethird of the Charlie Millard Band with bandmates Michael Binienda on percussion and Jer-Cat Millard on guitars and harmonica. On top of playing both piano and Rhodes bass, Charlie also performs lead vocals for the trio. This coming February, Charlie and his bandmates are set to rock CTAC’s stage as the headliner for an evening performance entitled, Cabin Fever. Come spend a chilly winter night listening to the heartwarming songs of The Charlie Millard Band and special guests. Tickets for the February 2 performance are available now: $15 Member, $20 Non-Member, and $5 Student.

AYLOR NATURKAS, a 15-year-old Petoskey native and former Pre-Professional dancer of Crooked Tree Arts Center’s School of Ballet, has recently accepted a place in Miami City Ballet’s Pre-Professional 2 program, their highest level division. Since the age of four, Taylor has pursued her dream of becoming a professional ballerina. “I have danced at the Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey for 11 years, and have been provided with amazing training and support all through those years,” said Taylor. During her time with the School of Ballet, Taylor studied six days a week yearround, participated in summer intensive programs, and performed notable roles onstage, including Toto in The Wizard of Oz; Sammy in Trumpet of the Swan; Red Radish in Cipollino; Fairy Godmother in Cinderella; Rose and Fox in Le Petit Prince; and Clara, Arabian, and the Sugar Plum Fairy in productions of The Nutcracker. And for the past two years, Taylor was also the full-time, personal teaching assistant for CTAC School of Ballet Artistic Director, Heather Raue. “Taylor always went above and beyond, without the intention of recognition, to guide, inspire, comfort, and appreciate those around her,” said Raue. Now, living in Miami, Taylor is dancing six days a week and working to complete her sophomore year of high school during evenings and weekends. “This is a tremendous challenge,” said Taylor, “but also an amazing opportunity.” Taylor has attended the following summer intensives: Suzanne Farrell Cedar Island (2014 & 2015) Chautauqua Institution (2016) Charlotte Ballet (2017) Miami City Ballet (2018)

WARD-WINNING PAINTER and college professor Patrick Wise has a passion for learning from, teaching, and reaching people through art. A Petoskey native, Patrick studied art in the Metro Detroit area, earning his undergraduate degree in Advertising Illustration at the Center for Creative Studies and his Masters in Painting from Wayne State University.

CTAC’s Culinary Arts Committee CROOKED TREE’S CULINARY ARTS SERIES, a favorite of members and non-members alike, has been a staple during the fall and winter seasons for well over a decade. Orchestrated by the Culinary Arts Committee, each series showcases a variety of cuisines, restaurants, and chefs in the Northern Michigan area. The committee meets 4-6 times a year, at different restaurants, to discuss each upcoming series. Aside from planning, the committee members also host the culinary classes, set the table, assist the chef, and clean up at the end of the evening. “Hosting is really enjoyable because we get to meet new participants and see many returning patrons,” said Carole Carroll, Culinary Arts Committee Chair. “The chefs love to meet patrons too, as well as share their techniques and recipes.” The Culinary Arts Series introduces people to cuisine and restaurants they may have never tried, and teaches new ways to prepare and enjoy food. Culinary Arts Committee: Lynn Carson, Carole Carroll, Mary Driggs, Gail Willens, Bill Millar, Sharon Schappacher, and Chris Bartlett

A contemporary representational painter, Patrick has taught drawing and painting at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Wayne State University, and various community colleges. He also spent several years as Curator for the DIA’s education exhibitions. After spending many years living and working in the Metro Detroit area, Patrick and his wife decided to return to Northern Michigan so that he could restart his painting practice and teach within the local communities. “I teach to engage myself with other artists; to share the excitement and passion of art that has been shared with me. Teaching is another way for me to express myself while communicating within a greater art community.” A CTAC instructor since 2013, Patrick has taught a variety of painting classes and workshops, and he plans to expand his offerings to include cumulative classes on figure drawing and oil painting beginning this fall. KIDS EDUCATION/LEARNING STUDIO

The Mural Project The mission of the Crooked Tree Arts Center is to inspire and enrich lives through the arts, and together, The Mural Project team brought the mission to life through their art and teamwork. THIS SUMMER’S WEEK-LONG CAMP, The Mural Project, equipped a team of five young women with the skills to create a mural in CTAC’s lower level classroom hallway. Led by Äbby Kent, a professional artist specializing in large-scale art and mural painting, the camp participants designed and executed their collaborative work of art. “Large pieces are never a solo project,” said Äbby. “The girls quickly realized they needed each other in order to execute the work.”

McKenzie Clark, Jonelle Wagner, Mackenzie Dryden, Sinead Clearly, and Maggie Tittle collaborated to create a vibrant mural promoting the arts that enrich our community. Images of CTAC’s offerings—a trumpet for music, ballet slippers for dance, framed artwork for visual arts and exhibits, a spatula for culinary arts, and a book for literary arts—embellish an enlarged CTAC logo. All this is bolstered by a background that reads: INSPIRE.

The LEARNING STUDIO Join CTAC for workshops that are free* and open to all ages! Learning Studio offerings include photography, pottery, drawing, and music workshops, as well as Open Studio, a time dedicated to exploration and creativity in our Visual Arts Room. From his world travels and experiences, Royce has come to view art as a universal language, one that he has translated into his teaching: “I love to teach, to channel creativity, to work with people with the tools they have and at the level they are at…While teaching I am not able to create; instead, I am observing and becoming intensely aware of how I create.” Royce teaches both stateside and abroad, and has been a reoccurring instructor at CTAC-Traverse City since 2016. Along with friend and fellow artist Tali Frachi, he cofounded ArtisTTable Retreat to encourage synergy between artists coming together from all disciplines and ethnic backgrounds. During ArtisTTable Retreats, Royce fills a multitude of roles, including trip organizer, tour guide, referee, counselor, chaperone, and sometimes even cook. Catch Royce’s work in an upcoming four-person show in Gary, Indiana, and several local shows in Northern Michigan later this year. Royce will also be teaching at CTAC-Traverse City in January 2019.

SIS FISHER

A Long History of Supporting the Arts THE MID-CENTURY MODERN house rests on the shore of Lake Michigan in Harbor Springs, shrouded by tree cover. Sis Fisher perches upon the couch corner, handwritten notes and the most recent copy of Art News beside her; she had done her homework for the interview. The living area of her up north home boasts immaculate white walls, grass-green carpet, and pops of color in the forms of throw pillows, lamps, and art - it’s exactly what you would expect from our classic and creative interviewee. A Michigan girl born and raised, Sis cites her mother, a Flint public school art teacher, as her biggest influence growing up. Artistic and creative, Sis’ mother was a seamstress in her own right, and passed her interest onto Sis, an interest that Sis turned into a passion. “I just like to make gowns,” Sis says as she reminisces, “but my most favorite thing is matching plaids and stripes.” Growing up, Sis’ family had a home workshop where she had free reign. It was in this space that Sis was encouraged to not only sew and work with fabric, but also to nail, saw, build, paint, and woodwork, all furthering her creative pursuits that have stayed with her to this day. Fast-forward a couple decades: Sis is married to Walter Fisher, after being introduced at a boy-meet-girl party in Detroit; she volunteers throughout the Metro area; and continues to explore a multitude of creative outlets. She chairs committees and attends fundraisers that support the arts and community, and sews all her dresses for the events. Along the way, word got around that Sis had an artistic flair and she was enlisted to create decorations and centerpieces for the events she attended, including the Archives of American Art’s Lundi Gras at London Chop House; Cranbrook’s Guy Fawkes Ball; and the DIA’s Under the Stars.

Flattered and thrilled to explore her artistry in a new way, Sis christened her breakfast table as her preferred workplace, and Walter was ever the supporter of his wife: “[He] would just shove glue and supplies out of the way so he could eat,” laughs Sis. “Walter just wanted me to be happy.” This love of decorating, designing, and creating didn’t just stay in the Detroit area either. For the past 55 years, Sis has been splitting her time between lower and Northern Michigan, raising a family, serving as the proprietress of Nub’s Nob alongside Walter, and getting involved with Crooked Tree Arts Center. It all started when Sis attended a little event called Dart for Art. She enjoyed supporting the arts in another community, and once again, word got around about Sis’ artistic passion and endeavors. “I don’t recall how I began making the centerpieces,” Sis admits, “It must have started with Ermy Bonfield [Dart for Art Chair].” Regardless of how it came to be, Sis has been making the one-of-a-kind centerpieces for the annual Arts Center fundraiser for almost 20 years. This past summer, Sis created decorations to match Stephen Palmer’s found object piece for the event, and in doing so, was able to utilize many of the odds and ends she had collected over the years, including throwing darts, dice, flags, knick-knacks, flowers, measuring tapes, and mini handcuffs. One of Sis’ favorite things about working with CTAC over the years is having met so many people she wouldn’t have otherwise. Oh, and she thoroughly enjoyed having her work featured in an exhibit, too. For a brief eleven days, a small collection of Sis’ fashion pieces was featured in a CTAC pop-up exhibit. The Blurred Lines of Fashion & Art ran in conjunction with Cynthia

Rutherford’s show, Mind Into Matter, creating a cohesive presentation of vibrant artwork and ornate gowns. The fabulous pieces on display were all handmade by Sis, and worn to the numerous Detroit events she chaired, decorated, and attended. She even recently wore one of her many creations to her granddaughter’s wedding, proving that her fashion sense is as timeless as she is creative. As the interview winds down, Sis mentions the kind of events CTAC may consider offering in the future —more pop-up exhibits and high caliber lectures, to name a couple— but she also talks about what CTAC has accomplished: phenomenal ballet performances, inspiring concerts, intriguing exhibitions, and delicious culinary classes. Sis wrapped up our interview with a singularly succinct comment: “CTAC has done an incredible job.” And with that compliment in mind, Crooked Tree intends to continue inspiring, enriching, and facilitating opportunities through the arts, with our inspiration fueled by creative supporters such as Sis.

“I don’t recall how I began making the centerpieces,” Sis admits, “It must have started with Ermy Bonfield [Dart for Art Chair].”
