Welcome from Mary Our Chamber Cheerleader

S-P-I-R-I-T… “Spirit” – short word, big meaning and big difference! Without spirit... a sports team, a business, a sales team or a community will never reach the ultimate rung on the ladder of success. The C-48 Breezeway communities of East Jordan, Ellsworth and Atwood and their people know the importance of putting their hearts, souls, hard work and pride into their businesses, their schools, their clubs, organizations, churches, events and their lives. The result is a great area to live, visit, start a business or retire. As you read through our Tenth Anniversary Visitor Guide/Membership Directory (our largest edition! Thank you, member advertisers!), you will learn about our people, attractions, events, educational opportunities, and our wonderful businesses and their owners. You will see stunning photos of the area that showcase the beauty and character of our Northwest Michigan. I’m confident after reading our guide, you will want to explore this area I call home. Whether it be for a visit, relocation or business venture, the East Jordan Area Chamber of Commerce is here to assist you. Our office is open year-round and would love to share our S-P-I-R-I-T with you! Access us via phone (231-536-7351), email – info@ejchamber. org, visit us at our office downtown East Jordan in the Main Street Center or write us at P.O. Box 137, 100 Main Street, Suite B. Catch our Spirit – the winning spirit! As Michigan, “the Comeback State,” continues to move forward in business, manufacturing, tourism and agriculture, do your part. Do something positive. Make a difference! Celebrate Michigan, celebrate East Jordan, Ellsworth and Atwood and all we have to offer! Hope to see you soon!

The mill is housed in two century-old farm barns where employees are doing everything from cleaning sheep and alpaca wool to manufacturing ready-to-use yarn from the wool. They not only process wool from their own animals... wool is shipped to their mill from all over the United States. Deb McDermott is a shepherd, spinner, and fiber artist. Visitors to the Stonehedge Fiber Mill will have an opportunity to purchase yarn and gift items knitted by Deb. Come visit EJ on Main Street. The EJ legacy dates back to 1883 when William E. Malpass and his father-in-law, Richard W. Round, established a foundry on the shores of Lake Charlevoix, in the town of East Jordan. Known as East Jordan Iron Works for over 125 years, the company has become an international leader in the design, manufacture, and distribution of access solutions for water, sewer, drainage, telecommunications and utility networks. The company, now known as EJ, is a global enterprise that spans five continents promoting innovation, quality, and commitment to customer service. Its worldwide commercial presence includes sales offices, manufacturing and distribution facilities, research and development centers, and product distribution in over 140 countries, while remaining a family-owned company. In 2008, EJ opened a Historical Visitor Center in downtown East Jordan. It was designed as a place for the public to learn about the company, including its interesting history. In the fall of 2012, EJ began renovation on the building and will re-open this summer. Visitors will be presented with all new exhibits to learn about the history, processes, products, and global presence of EJ. EJ is located at 211 Main Street and will be open to the public free of charge. For hours of operation and more information, please call 231-536-4587.

The Creative Spirit Jordan River Arts Council 26 Years of Arts & Culture

The Jordan River Arts Council was formed 26 years ago by persons with a vision of an established art center and has served as East Jordan’s community culture leader, continuously for the past 26 years. Several of those visionaries were Howard Ellis, Nancy Carey, and Pat & Rod Tinney, all of whom are still active today. JRAC is located on Main Street in downtown East Jordan in the old Library building. A refurbished sign is in front with the new logo largely displayed on the side of the building. JRAC provides an organized framework for the presentations of quality workshops, exhibits, fine art lectures and live performances. During the exhibits, the Center is open Tuesday through Sunday, 1-4 p.m. Other times can be arranged. Always special are the opening receptions for each exhibit. JRAC is a strong believer in education and extends the fine arts to area schools. Educational exhibits with hands-onexperiences and in-school programs are offered yearly to area schools. High school arts scholarships - The Betty Osborne, The Pearl in Hand, and the JRAC - are granted annually in May. JRAC is a sponsor of the summer Music in the Park Concert series and often works on other community projects. The Art Center serves as a meeting place for the Writers Group which meets the second Tuesday of each month. They have published the book, “Writings” which is available for sale. The Socrates Cafe meets every other Sunday with lively discussions. The Artists Gathering of plein air painters meet weekly during the summer and several times during the winter at the Center. The all-volunteer Board of Directors meets the third Tuesday of each month and the annual meeting with picnic and entertainment is held the third Sunday in September. All events are open to all interested persons. No need to be a JRAC member, but membership is always encouraged. JRAC is supported through memberships, donations, grants and in-kind services. The main fundraiser is the popular Holiday Art Fair held the first Saturday in November with a gourmet lunch served by the Board. JRAC has produced a cookbook - “Flavors and Visions” - with members’ original art and favorite recipes and also colorful tote bags which are for sale. JRAC is a place to stop when visiting East Jordan. [ www.Jordan River Arts.org ]

The Jordan River Pathway North Country Trail Raven Ridge Nature Preserve Rogers Family Nature Preserve St. Clair Lake - Six Mile Lake Natural Area Charles Taylor Nature Preserve / Olstrom Family Preserve • Wisser-Swarovski Nature Preserve

The Jordan River Pathway was estab-

lished to provide an opportunity for hikers, backpackers, and snowshoers to take in the abundance of natural beauty that the Jordan River Valley offers. While on the Pathway, one will enjoy many scenic, biological and historic aspects of the Jordan Valley. The Pathway offers several trail options. The main starting point and parking facilities are located at the top of Deadman’s Hill off U.S. 131 north of Alba. The Deadman’s Hill loop is three miles long.

“Catch Our Spirit” on Our New Webcams! Thanks to the generosity of Coldwell Banker Schmidt Realtors, East Jordan is now home to two webcams. One camera is placed at Sportsman’s Park overlooking an eagle’s nest. Watch the eagles or catch the deer and other wildlife below throughout the year. A second camera is pointed toward the beautiful South Arm of Lake Charlevoix, a four-season lake full of activity. From boating to fishing to the spectacular East Jordan Freedom Festival fireworks... see it all here! Thank you Coldwell Banker Schmidt Realtors for your gift. Find the webcam links on the East Jordan CB Realtors site, the Chamber site and the City of East Jordan site.

The Friends of the Jordan River Watershed

School Spirit Ellsworth Community Schools The Ellsworth kids sure caught the Spirit!

Ellsworth Community School has a long and distinguished history of offering each of its students unequaled educational opportunities. Our motto “big school opportunities, small school relationships summarizes our approach to education. Each student at Ellsworth is nurtured and encouraged to sample many academic and extra-curricular activities and to develop his or her unique talents. Most students actively participate in numerous before and after school activities while attending Ellsworth Community School. With a small student to teacher and staff ratio, all Ellsworth students have access to opportunities that are virtually unheard of in other schools its size including: free developmental pre-school, full day kindergarten, on-line learning opportunities for advanced classes and credit recovery, college credit at no charge to students, music/ art/physical education for all students, iPads in every classroom, one-one laptops for all high school students, and access to career/technical education programs in graphic arts and agriculture.

these honors were given for exceptional performance on state and national testing. In 2013 Ellsworth was awarded the Winners Circle Award from the Michigan Association of School Administrators for innovative school programming. We are annually ranked as one of America’s best high schools in US News and World Report, and continue to outperform other schools in the region based on standardized test scores. Ellsworth clearly offers its students unequaled opportunities. Ellsworth Community School is a family friendly environment where parents and the community are an integral part of the every day activities of the school. Ellsworth is not just a top-notch school! It is a major employer, a gathering place for our community, and a critical component of the community we call Ellsworth. Aaron Gaffney Superintendent

This year Ellsworth Community School was selected as a Reward School by the State of Michigan, and as Academic State Champions by the Center for Michigan. Both of

East Jordan Public Schools

Within the East Jordan Public Schools, our vision is, “To be better today than we were yesterday; and be better tomorrow than we were today.” Excellence can only be achieved when “best” is the only option. That attitude starts with me and encompasses every member of our staff and each of our great students. The results we have seen over the past 12 months have been very rewarding. We have seen our ACT scores reach the highest levels in our storied school’s history; MEAP scores at the Elementary School have increased dramatically; our High School Quiz Bowl Team won its second straight State Championship; our 1:1 iPad initiative has proven to be a tremendous boon to our instructional model; and our athletic teams have won championships and represented our schools and community with the class and dignity we expect. Learning in the East Jordan Public Schools is much more than a curriculum—it embodies caring, compassion and old fashioned family values that mean as much today as they did to our grandparents. We love our students and we are not shy in telling them and showing them every day. When students feel cared for and valued, they strive to prove your belief in them is not misplaced.

They are more engaged in the learning process; they are more respectful to their peers and the adults they associate with; and they want to give back by creating a legacy of excellence that generations of students can follow. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of a school district that has such a foundation of beliefs and practices! East Jordan is much more than a school district that believes that excellence and best are the only options. We also believe East Jordan is a great place to live, a great place to shop, a great place to eat and, simply stated, “A great place to be!” We invite you to visit our website or stop by and visit. We would love the opportunity to show you our school district and introduce you to the remarkable staff and students that make up our school family—a school family that just may be yours someday. We Are…EJ! Jon D. Hoover Superintendent

Ebenezer Christian School Ebenezer Christian School was founded in 1945 by people of faith who wanted the Holy Bible to be the basis for the education of their children. We are a non-denominational school, open to all faiths. The preschool uses Zoo Phonics which is a method developed to make children strong readers at an early age. Ebenezer follows the Common Core State Standards and offers strings programs through the Crooked Tree Art Center for grades 3rd-8th Grade. Our students also participate in the public school band program grades 5th-8th. Our students will be using iPads during the school year which will be integrated into their current curriculum. Though we are a small school, we offer a great education in a loving environment and we strive to be an extension of the home.

The City of East Jordan Chris Yonker, City Administrator

“Yeah, we’ve got an app for that!”

With smart phones, tablets and all-in-one computers all the rage, it is hard to keep up with the speed of new technology. In order to keep in touch with our many audiences, the City of East Jordan is trying to stay ahead of the technology curve. It seems as though there are endless applications, better known as “Apps” available for downloading to your phones or tablets that can connect you to just about any interest you can think of. Unless you happen to be a pretty good computer programmer, creating an “app” can be a daunting task. The City has so far stuck to the basics with our City website and our Facebook page. If you have not been on these sites recently, it’s time to check them out. Below are some highlights of the “apps” available on the two sites. Community Spirit What’s New in the Village of Ellsworth? Ellsworth, founded in 1881 and incorporated as a village in 1938, is located on the scenic C-48 Breezeway and Chain of Lakes. Ellsworth continues to receive inquiries from individuals interested in starting a business in the community. This summer the village will reconstruct Church and Lake Street (C48/Breezeway) from the corner of Main and Church Street to the Ellsworth Sports Park (.40 of a mile). The pavement will be widened enabling a bike lane each way. The guard rails on Lake Street will also be replaced. The bids will be let out in July and the project will be completed by November 1, 2014. This summer the village will be making improvements to its water system. This includes the installation of water meters, remote readers, replacement of some water services, painting of the water tower, well house improvements, and purchase of software for the water department. The village is working with the communities along the Chain of Lakes in developing a water pathway and a Paddle Antrim Festival in the fall of 2015. With its park system, waterways, scenic roads, and snowmobile trails, Ellsworth is a great place to take advantage of Michigan’s Natural Resources during the four seasons. If you are seeking a great place to live or visit, Ellsworth is it!

NoMAC in EJ One of the often overlooked precious natural resources in northern Michigan is the clear and very dark night sky! We are a group of people united in our enthusiasm about the night sky, astrophotography, observing, and all facets of amateur astronomy. We meet at 7:30 p.m. January through May, and at 8:30 p.m. June through September. The meeting venue is usually on the Thursday of every month closest to the New Moon at Raven Hill Discovery Center in East Jordan. No prior experience, equipment, or knowledge of the night sky is required - just a desire to learn about and observe the wonders of the cosmos! Raven Hill is an exceptionally good observing site, with an open wide viewing field and extremely dark skies. Our meetings generally start with a brief lecture, video, or building an astroproject. If it’s clear outside, we all head to the observing area afterward. This is a great family and friends opportunity to appreciate yet another jewel in the crown we call northern Michigan - the night sky. We would love to have you join us! Our website is www. nomac.net and contains info about upcoming events, announcements, astronomy weather predictions, and more.

Happy 75th Anniversary to the East Jordan Rotary Club!
