MARIO’S LETTER
FROM THE DESK OF
MARIO Springtime in the Pacific Northwest is something we all love and enjoy. With the gorgeous weather and longer days, you can’t help but feel inspired. This spring is particularly exciting for us, thanks to some terrific happenings underway that give us new ways to serve you better. Our passion is to bring you the best. Whether it’s our edit of the designers we love or our fanatical dedication to service, you are our first priority. And thanks to our new partnership with my longtime friends the Mitchell family, our team can now deliver an even better Marios experience. For starters, we have more choices and style options, new designers to introduce, and a wonderfully enhanced jewelry selection. And thanks to some innovative technology, we can bring the store to you in a way that we never could before, right where you live, work and play: on your phone, tablet and desktop. For more than 40 years we’ve been building on the great foundation my father started. And as steward, it has always been my goal to take his passion and keep going to build a store for future generations. This is perhaps the most exciting era in our history, as it provides an opportunity to take our level of service further than I ever thought possible. Marios will always be about connecting, sharing life experience and learning about what’s happening in your world. I can’t wait to see you personally, and toast to sunny days ahead and great new beginnings! Cheers!

Everything is
BETTER with FRIENDS For more than 50 years we’ve had the pleasure to make some incredible friendships. Every Style Advisor can give you a list of wonderful friendships that have formed with the customers they’ve had the pleasure to help. And throughout the years, we’ve also made friends with like-minded business owners that share our passion for delivering the best edit of the world’s finest designers. That’s why we couldn’t be happier to join forces with our longtime friends the Mitchell family. The Mitchells have been running their five stores on both coasts, and we’ve enjoyed getting to know them over the years, and developing a close friendship which has led to this moment: We’ve decided to team up and create an even stronger network with the
ultimate goal of helping our customers live with passion and play with style. It’s been a dream for Marios to offer the same kind of store experience online that you have working one-on-one with your Style Advisor in person. We’ve wanted to offer even more incredible styles to our careful edit, and now that’s happening. Customers have loved our jewelry and shoe offerings, and they’ve asked for more, and now there will be more in store to choose from. We like to think we’ve done a good job making people happy over the years, but we always strive to improve. And that’s what we hope you’ll discover in these new experiences: the Marios you love is now ready to serve you better.

“With Mario’s fashion sense and the Mitchells’ customer-focused retail expertise, I expect the combined strengths
of these two iconic and family-owned specialty stores will create a potent force in luxury retailing. The Mitchell family and Mario Bisio are both longtime Zegna customers and trusted partners. I wish Bob and Mario the best of success.

ASK MARIO
ASK MARIO
can’t say enough about the half-lined sportcoat. It’s the “Imost comfortable jacket to wear in warmer weather. ”
Q:
Special occasion dressing can be a little confusing. We know suits, and get tuxedos, but can you please help explain what “black tie optional” means? The only thing you need to know about an invitation that says “black tie optional” is that if you have a tuxedo and want to bust it out of the closet for a night, then go for it—you won’t be the only one. That said, how to dress if you’re not wearing a tux? Your next fallback is a dark gray, black or navy suit, something a little more elegant. A sportcoat and slacks is probably not appropriate, unless it’s a fine dinner jacket or something really special. This is a great time for a bowtie, and I encourage experimenting with one if you haven’t. No matter what you wear, choose a solid tie. Colors should be more tonal versus high contrast. Not a lot of pattern. It’s more elegant when you go simple and fine. Also, think about French cuffs, and great-looking cufflinks. This is your opportunity to pull out your finest and best.
Q:
You wear a pocket square every day. Is that a look any guy can pull off? Absolutely! I love a pocket square because it’s a light touch and it’s fun. Pocket squares give just a little extra personality to whatever you’re wearing. It’s always the smaller details that tell the world a bit more about your point of view. And there are so many choices, it’s something I encourage guys to embrace. And this is very important: there’s no science to
54
wearing them. Some guys do fancy folds, but all you need to do is stuff it in your pocket and play around with it until you like the way it sits. Work it so that as much or as little is showing that pleases you. It can be white. It can be colorful. This might be the only rule: if you’re wearing a jacket, you can wear a pocket square. No matter what the rest of your outfit is, you’re good to add the extra embellishment. I wear them with jeans and sneakers, as well as dressed up.
Q:
Last summer was a scorcher—this year I want to be prepared. What’s your go-to for guys who need to dress correctly yet still be cool, literally? I can’t say enough about the half-lined sportcoat. It’s the most comfortable jacket to wear in warmer weather. It’s actually the perfect choice all year round for men who run a little hot, or like to keep their jacket on no matter the temperature outside or in. The truth is half-lined jackets are more difficult to create, because there’s no lining to hide behind—the tailoring, the finishing, all the seams must be exact. Our travel blazer from Brunello Cucinelli is an outstanding performer when the weather is warmest. The exceptionally lightweight wool/silk blend feels lighter than many dress shirts when you put it on, yet presents a very put-together and crisp look. You’ll love the way it fits, the details and styling, the natural shoulder; it’s designed so well it looks great on just about every guy who tries it on. While it’s perfect on the warmest days, the interesting thing is you can wear it all year round. If you had only one jacket in your closet, this could be it.

now, it’s a big moment for details and individuality— “Rightstyles are less uniform and more imaginative. ”
Q:
Personalization continues to be a big trend in fashion. What ways are you seeing it show up this spring? Right now, it’s a big moment for details and individuality—styles are less uniform and more imaginative. And it’s happening in both shape and texture, too. Overall, there’s a movement toward using advanced fabrics that’s very interesting. Perforations continue, transparency and lace are still big. Asymmetrical shapes are also still part of what’s happening now. Straps and harnesses were showing up in collections, all part of the “warrior woman” look that continues to be popular. And we’re loving the bohemian prints and abundance of stripes that factor into this season as well.

Interestingly, linen is getting more attention. Our weather patterns have changed somewhat, and with summers in the Northwest getting longer and warmer, our customers have been asking for it. The good news is there are more blends of linen coming out. In particular, you’ll see some textured linens from Brunello Cucinelli that are really beautiful. Regarding shoes, flats are showing up more and more. Even Alexander McQueen models in the showroom were wearing flats, which you typically don’t see. Also of note is suiting: there were a few more suits for women, and suits with a twist. We have some from Prada in particular that are really memorable. It’s a great time to be creative and showcase your personality.
Q:
What are you most excited about regarding our partnership with Mitchells? In a nutshell: all the ways we can serve you better. One big advantage you’ll notice right away is we’ll be able to offer greater depth of sizes and a wider selection compared to previous seasons. In particular, we’re expanding our jewelry offering, with new designers we haven’t carried before that we think you’re going to love. Also look for footwear in a wider range of sizes. While each of our stores will always maintain its individual and distinctive selection of clothing, we now have more buyers that pool ideas together. That’s a plus to customers because we have more eyes and ears in the market, and the ability to access even more incredible pieces thanks to our enhanced reach. What it means to you is you’ll have more beautiful things to choose from. I’ve been great friends with Linda Mitchell and her entire team for such a long time; now that we’re combining forces, it’s going to make our edit even stronger. The most important thing to remember is we’re still doing all the things you love and what we’re best at: buying for our Pacific Northwest customers using our knowledge of what we know you want, and what will make you feel fabulous.

Outtake of Peter Cohen look
Q:
We featured Peter Cohen in this issue (see page 74). Tell us about your personal relationship. Peter has become a real friend over the years; he’s very special to all of us. He loves to come to our stores and work one-on-one with our customers— and also he’s friends with many of our Style Advisors. We’ve been buying his collections for 24 years, and it’s been great to see his career flourish. He’s relatively unembellished and clean in his designs, easy to wear and perfect to personalize. The clothes really come to life when you put them on. You know it’s Peter Cohen because it’s understated and has impeccable finishing. His clothes make a lot of women just feel really good and happy. What’s truly remarkable about Peter Cohen: women often come in with a piece from a dozen years ago and ask him to make it again, because they love it so much and it still holds up, style wise. I appreciate that he’s somewhat under the radar—he’s not part of that trend-chasing fashion frenzy.
Another of my favorite things is he knows how to enhance a woman’s best features. He doesn’t just design for one specific woman—he can fit women of all shapes and sizes, from a 2 to a 16. That ability demonstrates his incredible talent and skill.
Q:
Prada is another collection we’ve carried for a very long time. Why do you think it’s been so successful? Prada is an Italian heritage brand we’ve long admired, and it syncs with our sensibility. We’re one of the very few specialty stores in the U.S. that carry their line, and it’s a huge honor. Prada often appeals to women who are artistic and confident. You have to be bold enough to wear some things. They have a consistent quirkiness our customers love. One thing women don’t always realize is how long you can wear something from Prada. They make statement pieces that last. Their production and fabric sourcing is consistently of the highest value— they research fabrics and access only the best. I like to say, “It gets better the longer you have it.” Like an art piece, you get a deeper appreciation the more you wear it.

DESIGNER PROFILE
Up Close & Personal with
PETER COHEN
The designer you love shares some of his secrets. We’re huge fans of the understated elegance that’s so present in Peter Cohen’s collection. We had a chance to chat with the designer, where he shared about what inspires him.
Q:
Our customers just love working with you. Tell us about one of your favorite moments at Marios. One of my most satisfying experiences was at a trunk show. One of the things I’d done was this French mohair lace piece (that Lynwood actually owns). A grandmother and granddaughter came. The grandmother was upscale, old school and refined. The granddaughter was a Goth kid with torn stockings and big boots, and they both went to the same piece, and said, “I love this!” That is the epitome of why I do what I do. Clothes have to connect with someone. It’s the only thing I care about.
Q:
What do you think is the most important thing that influences your designs? I’m not big into embellishments. I’m attracted to simpler ideas. Other people do more extravagant things, and that’s great, but that’s not what I do.
Q:
What trends are the most interesting to you these days? I favor looks that endure past trends, and strive to create styles that last. Clothes are funny when you think about it. Part of the pleasure of getting dressed is to allow people to do their own thing. I don’t like 74
looks that are “nailed together”—I make clothes that allow people to put their own spin on things.
Q:
If you had to define your design philosophy, what would it be? You are larger than your clothes, and I don’t mean size. When clothes are larger than you, you have a problem. I’m obviously enamored with clothes; they have to be present, but at some point, the person needs to be what you’re primarily paying attention to. You see someone who’s very well dressed, they look great, you give them the credit. That’s what I want. So I look to create things that put a woman first. I want the individual’s personal style to be what you notice.
Q:
Your visits are a rare opportunity for our customers to connect with a designer. Tell us your favorite part about working directly with the people who wear your clothes. Being involved in the whole process. Showing the collection to the buyers, bringing it to the store, meeting the customers in the store at a trunk show—every aspect has always been so enjoyable. It’s so special at Marios—it really falls into place when you work with people like Mario and Lynwood. It’s the intimacy and familiarity that Marios has with their clients that I love the most. They’re friends of the store, that attachment is what’s so great. It’s the only place I would shop. I didn’t like to shop in New York. At Marios the way people help you in the store, the whole process of it, the service, the skill, the tailoring, the whole thing; it’s as good a shopping experience as you can get. You can’t find people who know their stuff quite like you can with the team at Marios.
