Presidents Report June 2013

Having recently completed our Annual Membership Renewal RoundUp, which inevitably involves loosing a few members due to changed circumstances, it was reassuring to induct more new members at the meeting on June 5th. Michael Tingey and Mel Marshall , Eddie and Robyn Clark, Murray and Alison Hudson were all presented with Membership Packs and badges by Membership Officer David Jones. David will also be busy at the July meeting, as we will have another group of four or five new members joining the Club. Thanks to the efforts of Michael Gilbert and his team at last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 4WD Show, and from other individual members, we have had a steady supply of visitors to meetings and trips this year. The

transformation of these visitors to members is a testament to the friendly and social atmosphere of our Club. Whilst giving ourselves a pat on the back for being friendly and very sociable, there is one thing I would very much like to make an adjustment to at our monthly members meetings. I know that prior to our meetings everyone is catching up with friends and having a good old chin wag, and I acknowledge that this is a good thing, it can also be somewhat difficult for our visitors to break into this social gathering. Prior to the start of a meeting our Membership Officer is at his busiest, greeting members and visitors alike, he has the task of obtaining visitors details, issuing temporary name badges and generally making visitors feel welcome and getting them settled into the meeting. At the June meeting David also had to contend with a new visitor registration system that our I.T. Team had introduced. All of this can sometimes contribute to a bottleneck at the entrance to the room. Unfortunately for David, there is a strict time limit that he has to contend with and that is my

penchant for getting the meeting going on time !!! Time management – something I am actually not renowned for at home! To greatly assist David, and to quickly integrate visitors into the meeting, it would be a great help if, as members arrive they collect visitors, move them quickly away from the entrance and act as a “meeting host” for the rest of the evening. Rather than having to nominate specific members as a host for an evening, as we do with the supper arrangements, how about as everyone arrives grab a visitor from David’s group (gently of course) and lead them into the meeting room with the offer of a friendly smile and conversation. This action may also prevent the most unfortunate development of a “visitor corner” at the back of the room. You know the scene; all the wide-eyed and shell shocked people at the back corner who don’t have the fancy nametags and club shirts!! Just think back to your first meetings and tell me is wasn’t daunting the first time you came to meet this incredibly friendly and close knit band of people who can talk, and talk, and talk and then talk some more!! While on the subject of membership, I wonder if there is a provision in the Policies and Procedures where the President can impose monetary fines for members not having their name badges on at meetings? If you have misplaced your badge, see the Membership Officer, he can arrange a replacement at a very reasonable cost. What would be a reasonable cost you ask, might be less than a round of drinks

for the Management Committee!! Sadly for those who wish to challenge the “name badge fine” our venerable Secretary has decided to join the Father & Son Adventure on the CSR, along with the Holbrooks and others, and will be away for a while. I believe someone actually convinced him there is a series of bakeries on the Canning Stock Route. I wonder if Tony and Stella can convince him there is a bakery at Plumridge Lakes in August. John Harding from DEC gave his time to show us the difference between a flowering weed and a wildflower. Michael brought an essential trailer and the rest of us donated muscle, focus on weeds and rubbish, and our love of the bush.

On the whole, the amount of rubbish has more than halved from that amassed when we initially began the project in 2007. When the DEC guys drive through the park their focus is on the park overall, they arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t as aware of the smaller items of rubbish that we see by our driving slowly, bunny hopping along the track actively focusing on that bottle or squashed drink can... so that John (DEC) was surprised at the number of bags we filled. Rubbish collection was a bit of one upmanship..Marion started off on a roll...a large roll of new fencing wire. Her bid was raised by David and his Dad dragging in a kitchen stove. Stella outdid that with the find of yet another shell of a car...but the found Mitsubishi badge took the

Armadale Council is to work with us to utilize the historical bricks from the old site to create something that is hopefully useful and vandal resistant. We left the park via the South Bruce then led the homestead trip... Western Hwy gate about 3.30pm. from the rear. John Harding (DEC) guided the group there. Of course by then, many have developed a twitch when they drive through the tracks after the work has finished. It’s a compelling urge to stop and jump out for every conspicuous artifact dumped there. Our visitors were treated to a long drive through the treed gorges and valleys of the Regional Park. By being DEC volunteers, we get the luxury of taking the easy way to enjoy the heights and depths of the area. For young David it was not only his first time driving his father’s car, he quite competently handled his first 4WD situation. At the last visit and Working Bee, the cotton weed on the flats was so tall it was higher than a man walking. This is almost gone where it was earlier the only plant obvious. One more DEC spraying is planned of the newly shooting weeds... and then we will return to plant trees aimed at preserving the habitat of the endangered Carnaby cockatoos and other creatures native to the area. We tasted some old orchard lemons.. and spat them out.. checked out the

Lorella Springs Wilderness Park (Station) When: Depart Saturday 21 June 2014 and return Sunday 20 July 2014 (29 days). Where: Lorella Springs Wilderness Park (Station) of Carpentaria. Turn off the Savannah Way near Crawford in NT.

Convoy: Maximum of eight vehicles. Camper trailers and caravans OK to Lorella Springs camping area and caravan park where a base camp will be established - from then on 4x4 only. The track into Lorella Springs is a station track and great care should be taken with caravans. Tentative route is Perth to Broome and on to Lorella Springs via the Savannah Way. Return to Perth will be via Alice Springs and the Great Central Highway. Who: Members only. Equipment: Usual club emergency and recovery gear. Extra gear: To actually get to the Gulf of Carpentaria from the camp ground/caravan park is strictly for 4 X 4 off road vehicles, as is access to the water falls and other places of interest. As such your vehicle will require vehicle spares, a snorkel, a minimum of all terrain tyres and an extra spare tyre. It is advisable to fit a winch and think about plenty of clearance. Trip detail & Costs: The trip detail (fuel stops, camp spots and exact route etc) together with an estimated cost of the trip will be advised at a special meeting with those interested in joining the expedition Lorella Springs Wilderness Park (Station): 1 million acre property (almost twice the size of the ACT) with lots to do and see (and some of the station it yet to be explored). It is advertised as equivalent to the Cape York area 40 years ago. The station is in the middle of nowhere - adventure unlimited!!! Once we leave the camp area/caravan park we will be on our own to explore to our hearts content.

As this is a Wilderness Park the owners do not permit shooting but you are permitted to fish in the rivers and lagoons for eating only (but not to take home). Every new system needs a tweak! Agenda Item 1: “Welcome to Members and Visitors”.... and right there it came unstuck! The new method of visitor registration commenced this night... visitor details typed directly into the laptop at the front desk ....a really good idea...but with no way to give President Peter Cole a list of those new arrivals. And extra chairs had been needed from the adjacent room... so Peter welcomed the visitors en masse and they were let off the hook of standing to introduce themselves as is the norm....how lucky were they! I’m sure that glitch will be addressed before next meeting. Seems Peter is being dragged quietly into ‘21st Century Communications ‘ and that doesn’t mean he’s finally graduating from his slate! He’ll cope...or bring his own printer. Meanwhile he also walks round with his new age lapel mike. Rob Nankiville is to be congratulated on his work. New members Michael Tingey & Mel Marshal, Trevor & Elaine Best, Eddie & Robyn Chalk, Murray and Alison Hudson, were welcomed and presented with their welcome packs from the President with David Jones, Membership Officer alongside. Trip Reports: Goldfields: Prospecting Weekend. Roger & Jan had just returned from UK so deferred till they are organised. Northcliffe Explorer: A joint presentation from Bob and Bridget. And the new projection system proved to be a good investment. Their photo images so clear & true to colour and definitely showed Northcliffe to be a ‘must visit’ area. Powerlines: Craig Perry delivered a verbal record of his trip south of the Powerlines. Environment MCBEG / Wungong Regional Park organised by Stephen Kalyniuk. Stephen said DEC are willing now to make it ‘our park’...giving us permission to use without first doing a working bee. To have day trips to enjoy the surrounds. There are two more MCBEGS planned for this year.

DEC have also asked if we would be interested in revegetating another airstrip near Brook Dam. Wungong airstrip is almost self sufficient & should only need an occasional rubbish clearing. Stephen observed that the people who come to help at environment days always seem to be the same core group. Would be great to see that involvement broadened. 20 to 25 active hands-on would be ideal. It isn’t a physically stressful day and it’s got to be better than just boring jobs at home! Plus it’s sparsely used bush and 4WD-ing so close to Perth. Upcoming trips June 30th Avon Valley Guy Lehmann will post to the forum. Still trying to get DEC keys. Fun drive on formed roads will explore Perth’s nearby Avon Valley and check out camping sites. August 8 -14th Tony Weldon not well, so Secretary John talked on Plumridge Lakes out along Nullarbor. Needs numbers....phone Tony. September 18 - 28th Jeff Otway’s leisurely Wildflower Tour. Will average an easy 100km per day, staying 2days in each spot, morning departures 9am. To explore Jurien Bay, Eneabba, Dongara, Morowa, Goomalling and return to Perth. 2014 21st June -31st July. Rick Irvine spoke more of his planned 2014 Louella Springs Trip a.k.a. “Expanding our Bakery Experience North “. Travelling “Kununurra via Meekatharra to Katherine”.... Heckling from the crowd. “Hey Rick we’re not following you!!!! He meant Mattaranga not Meekatharra ...starts with ‘m’ ends with ‘a’. Close enough!!! But seriously, as the timing cuts across school holidays there’s a need for early bookings. So just the same as for Guy’s Kimberley Explorer last year...numbers had to sorted the year before. Have a play.. You can’t wreck it (I hope) . Next select the upload arrow then either choose the photos from your photo files or just click and drag your selected photos onto the area. Try it once and you’ll realise just how easy it is. Don’t worry about size..(that’s the Webmaster’s Problem /Dept.) Just don’t upload too many ... only your very best!

And upload a video the same way. Michael also showed the new ability to interface photos on phones with the new projection system for presenting trip report photos. But the moment Michael digressed to photos of his home made squid dinner (first catch your squid) there were subtle calls for The Bell! And Michael be assured none of us will be coming to eat that with you!, Training Richard King demonstrated our Sat phone. It lives in the defibrillator box to be with us on all Outback trips (unless it gets left on the garage floor along with the toothbrush and the chair) There was a lot of fun and interjection from the hecklers this meeting. Certainly livens up when Troy s present. Good to see... and hear! Back to the Sat phone: The Trip Leader will be responsible for maintaining a log of phone use on a trip. It costs $2 a minute! AND be aware any calls not paid for will be apportioned across all members on the trip. Emergency calls to be covered by the club. Breakdowns are not classified as emergencies!! Also check your provider re costs TO the Sat phone. Can also be huge. Driver Training: Aug 21st Wednesday night at club rooms for theory. Aug 24th at Byford for practical. Cost $25 per head. Can be 2 drivers/ car. First Aid Training: Is available from an approver trainer Diane Veitch and members have been advised of details. Trackcare Much laughter for Bruce... first the mike wouldn’t work, nor would his slideshow of before and after shots of Warriedar Station and then it should have been stills.. he couldn’t talk that fast!!! Apparently TrackCare have 3 circles drawn around Perth. Rangelands is the middle circle. Rangelands is the homestead restoration program. Canning Stock Route ( CSR) is in the outer circle. July 15th to 22nd A group are going to Woolgoorong near Payne’s Find. TrackCare team recently returned from CSR through Woolgoorong with 18 cars and some trailers, installed 2 new toilets and worked on wells. Found winds have torn off some roofing so if if anyone wants to join them they’ll be welcomed. Yalgoo Shire have asked TrackCare to refurbish an old church in the shire, though TrackCare aren’t sure if it’s in their brief or charter. Proposed a Fun Run Car Rally September 7&8. To raise funds for Trackcare.

Warriedar Homestead Trip Foundation Day Weekend 2013 Trip leader: Bruce Brinkley

Participants: Guy & Wendy Lehmann, Trevor and Elaine Best, Rick & Nancy Ellis, Craig Perry, Keith Parker, Martin & Karen Archer, Grandchildren Lochy & Alexis, Richard King, Michael and Marion Gilbert, Bob and Bridget McPherson, Richard and Helen Kingston, Bruce & Judith Brinkley, Grandchildren Kane and Gemma OK....so we didn’t know that to actually flush the “Woo Hoo there’s a flushing toilet at Warriedar”....first start your generator, then drop your submersible pump 20 feet down the bore, then pump water into a large collector if you have one, then carry your bucketful of water with you when you want to ‘go’ and bingo... you have your flushing toilet ! Simple. Consequently we camped nearer the new His and Hers Dropbox adjacent the Shearer’s Sheds. And for once the women’s toilet, although still being the furthest (you have to be a woman to notice), had the best aspect....it captured all the odour clearing prevailing winds! The Kingstons were first to arrive on the Thursday . Found their way via Keith’s plotted maps and so were there to hear Keith, The Archers and Brinkleys on radio discussing which was the right way in , and so directed us via the easiest track. Northern Highway. Those on last year’s Kimberleys Trip would know Barry and Janene who joined the Brinkleys in Broome for the Cape Leveque portion of the trip. They were in WA for another traveling experience. Realising they could be on our same route though coming south, we sent a hopeful SMS and found they were only 56km north of New Norcia and we were only 60km south. How good was that timing? Two more for lunch and a catchup....which allowed the kids time to kick a ball in the park and run off some energy. 1.15pm left New Norcia. Only petrol stops now. Kids were traveling well. We’d sauntered so long we almost expected Craig, Richard and the Bests to catch us up !! The rest of the group rolled into the Homestead at varying times of the day and night. First night was freezing and Saturday morning cold and overcast, but then the sun came out. Saturday was a ‘do whatever you want’ day ... All explored the homestead and surrounds, kids played, Craig, Guy, Trevor, Richard &.. went exploring the surrounding country sussing out interest for our Sunday drive. Warriedar Station is a Track Care restoration project and they had asked us to look at repairing the donkey...to brick up the sides of a water heating drum behind the shearing quarters shower shed. To support the drum in place, Bruce created a saddle from metal he sourced from the huge rubbish pile.

Richard King mixed mortar from cement and red sand sourced from the nearby watercourse (local colour) while Rick, Bob, Keith, Guy and Bruce then supervised. Bruce played brickie with the blocks and the donkey began to resemble the original. Next Bruce and Bob turned their hands to joinery by rehanging the door that was standing inside the shower shed, and installed an opaque glass window by wiring it in place, to complete the room’s privacy for anyone to use..even if only to stand under their own portable black plastic solar showers.

Fields Find cemetery was our next driving break. One grave was that of a ‘housewife’, one a baby who died of cholera, four were young men who died when, in 1899 in a mining accident at Fields Find Gold Mine, stored explosives unexpectedly detonated some distance from a charge set further in the mine. Great adventure for the youngsters to be down through the gorge, then to clamber up to explore the shallow caves on the other side. No evidence of people or digging...just animal droppings and a few scattered bones. Next we took a new track to see where it went...a good enough reason...and found where big machinery had ripped large boulders of a type of conglomerate seen on kitchen benches. In fact one could actually think it was artificially composited if one saw it in a kitchen outfitter’s shop. It was so very

Known as Joe the Pole - Local Character. THE MINING FATALITY NEAR YALGOO. Yalgoo, September 1 1899. The Warden left early this morning for Field’s Find, to hold an inquiry touching the accident reported last night. No further accounts are to hand, but Mr. Chandler, who brought the report in, has stated that the explosion occurred in the main shaft on the night of the 31st ult., at 8 o’clock, or just after crib time, when the four men killed were the only miners in the shaft. Nothing wrong was suspected until a volume of smoke came up the shaft, when the driver in charge of the hauling gear attempted to work the cage and found it jammed. Mr. Martin, the underground foreman, hailed the men below, but receiving no reply, went down the shaft to the first plat and saw that the shaft from the plat down was wrecked. He called for volunteers, warning them that they would carry their lives in their hands. Almost all present volunteered to go down and assist to raise the debris to get at their mates. Four single men were ultimately selected, and they and Mr. Martin were let down. They managed to work down to the second plat and there found Daniel Hogan’s body, which was terribly mutilated. The bodies of the other men must have been blown to atoms, as even no portions can be identified. The place is described as being like a shambles. The scene on the dump is indescribable. When Hogan’s body was brought to the surface, his two brothers were present, and were frantic with grief. The deceased were all well-known Murchison miners, Wm. Payne being the prospector of Paynesville. King comes from Ballarat, Victoria, Smith hailed from Greenough, and

Lunch was at the Field’s Find mine and so we roamed all around and over the area. Care was taken especially with the children, as deep vertical shafts were encountered without guards of any type. We left there to head towards where we’d seen a bright glow at night but the road eventually took us back to Perenjori Road which runs beside the Warriedar Station airstrip.. So we returned to cook, talk, relax... and to congratulate Bruce on such a well delegated Trip! He then disappeared to mix up some render to cover the block wall and complete the donkey repair. Lets hope it survives its first firing. I’m sure someone will fire it up for use someday. The earlier “supervisors” then began mentally designing a roof catchment for rainwater to keep the 44gal drum supplied. Next time. The general consensus of opinion was that Warriedar Station makes an excellent staging point for exploring the area. Even though we didn’t utilise the actual homestead, the shearers buildings offered the community space and wind break... and drop box. Also as Guy commented, if ever we are there when it rains..no need to retreat to our tents as we must do at Ninghan, we can still socialize in the space the quarters offer. We could even have Fine Dining in one room, play Poker in another, Monopoly in another? Why not. Next time. Bruce went to meet and chat with Lawrence, a man who apparently stays at the homestead off and on. Lawrence made comment that the more the homestead is visited, the less chance there

is of its being vandalised. Let’s hope so. During the afternoon the plastic bottles were set up as targets along the bottom of the mound ...so the kids again spent hours throwing the same rocks back onto the mound.. and co-incidentally tidying up the now less than smooth surrounding ground. 10 to 10.30am Monday was designated departure time, though a few left earlier. Lunch stop at Dalwallinu.. the Cafe adjacent the railway track is up and running with good food, good selection, freshly made. And they were open on a Public Holiday ! A leisurely drive back though this time through picturesque Wongan Hills. Where traveling the Great Northern Highway there is the likelihood of slow miles behind an ‘oversize’, by going through Wongan Hills there is an equal chance of a slow caravan holding up the convoy. It allows you to see more! Home in good time to empty stuff and settle for work the next day. A good weekend.
