Oribi, Abbysinia Wall mounted stuffed deer head Harrison Collection, 1889
Much of the taxidermy collection comes from the travels of Lieutenant Colonel John James Harrison, a wealthy Victorian landowner and big game hunter from East Yorkshire. He travelled the world in search of ‘exotic’ animals that he could kill and subsequently display, often exploiting local peoples to help him in his pursuits. The animal heads now act as reminders of the hunt a haunting symbol of colonialism and Empire.
