Lieutenant Colonel John James Harrison A Sporting Trip Through India; Home by Japan and America, (extract), 1892

An extract from a travel book published by Harrison from one of his overseas trips. This particular passage focuses on his time in India and shows the planning and time devoted to satisfying his desire to hunt a tiger. The accompanying photographs are included, and illustrate the desire to capture the kill for posterity. Like the bodies of the animals which were subsequently taxidermied, they are trophies of his conquests. Harrison travelled widely across the British Empire and beyond. His large photographic collection reveals the number of local peoples who were drawn upon to support his hunting trips and the many animal species that were his targets.
