Lanna de Buitlear Clao Chlu ‘Clao Chlu’ is Irish for ‘transform/alternate’. With this in mind, the programme seeks to adopt a 24/7 programme which engages and enriches the lives of Liverpool locals, in the Baltic Triangle. Being from Liverpool, I was already aware of the conflicts between the luxury apartment developments and the existing resources, in particular nightclubs. I took a research based approach to creating a programme that the area needed, centred around nightlife, by interviewing local businesses, exploring precedents, reviewing what the area already had, and how this could be improved. By using embroidery as a key representation medium, it allowed me to translate the conclusions of my research into spatial concepts that responded and involved the local people and businesses. My design draws on the industrial past of the site incorporating features such as a saw tooth roof. I was interested in creating a flexible space to allow for day to night transitions, as well as catering to a wide range of events. Lighting has been key in the design, taking advantage of both natural light and designing unusual artificial lights to combat the annoyance of locals to the current ‘repetitive’ spaces, and define a more unique design.
