Prime Cuts

Vol1
As countries around the world started locking down to prevent the spread of Covid 19, the artworld, with its intense merry-go-round of exhibitions, openings and art fairs, was brought abruptly to a halt. The sudden shutdown of the entire art market forced everyone to pause and consider how to respond. The necessity of finding new ways of working and creative solutions has inspired the innovative collaboration between Gallery Different and Masterpiece Art, two London galleries working in different parts of the capital, who are pooling resources and expertise to put on a series of exhibitions starting this summer with PRIME CUTS Vol1.
AN ARTIST IN LOCKDOWN. I am sure I’m not the only artist to have contemplated their role in a time when there are many more important things to occupy our thoughts. Many artists like myself turned to creating work to support the NHS and various charities to find some ‘relevance’, but the question still remained. It wasn’t until a few weeks into lockdown, when drawings and chalked slogans began to appear in windows and on pavements that I realised the need to create is a natural human response in troubled times. As an artist that can only give you heart to carry on.
Prime Cuts
Anyone of a certain age, or inclination, will recognise “a Porky Prime Cut”, a phrase which will transport them to a particular time, or even a particular record. This was the signature of record engineer George “Porky” Peckham, etched, often with a humorous comment, onto the area of vinyl between the groove and the label. It was another of the hidden visual gems that formed an important part of music culture; record sleeves or a band logo on a button badge - the “look” of pop music was as powerful to me as the “sound”. It seemed possible to pack as much punch into a 7” record sleeve as it was to put into 3 minutes 16 seconds of music (the playing time of the Sex Pistols’ single “God Save The Queen”). It was the hysterical reaction to that record, and its sleeve by Jamie Reid, followed by the banning from display of the album cover “Never Mind The Bollocks”, that made me realise, making images could be as much fun as making a racket. I immediately took myself off to art school. 40 years on and I still love those images. Band logos, record labels and album sleeves still evoke feelings of love, power and fun. I hope the pieces in this exhibition convey those same feelings. It was “Porky’s” job to get as much of the sound and energy from a band’s recordings into the grooves of the vinyl pressing. In a small way my aim is similar, to take the energy of those records and recut them into a single, striking image. I hope you’re able to “Feel the Noize”.
