Architecture Portfolio Abbey McGuire Semester 2 Portfolio 170366395
Unlearning Architecture Developing derelict Newcastle into a 15-minute city, promoting the use of circular economy and provisions for housing, education, and walkability. Promoting new connections in the community through a new work life balance of city centre living, studying the thresholds and spaces created in between to demonstrate the importance of city dwellings. Being as sustainable as possible though the constant use of an existing building Eldon Square where big chain brands are leaving to escape to online demands, showing the adaptability of these forms to meet essential housing needs all whilst using cork a 100% natural and sustainable material to create my designs.

ARB Criteria Part 2 I have endeavoured to comment on the work that has been competed within my portfolio to which ARB criteria it proposes to, this is seen in the top corner of the page. This analysis of the criteria actively helps me to see where I need to continue to develop my ideas and where is have satisfied the criteria. GC1 -
Ability to create architectural designs that satisfy both aesthetic and technical requirements.
GC2 - Adequate knowledge of the histories and theories of architecture and the related arts, technologies and human sciences. GC3 - Knowledge of the fine arts as an influence on the quality of architectural design. GC4 - Adequate knowledge of urban design, planning and the skills involved in the planning process. GC5
- Understanding of the relationship between people and buildings, and between buildings and their environment, and the need to relate buildings and the spaces between them to human needs and scale.
GC6 - Understanding of the profession of architecture and the role of the architect in society, in particular in preparing briefs that take account of social factors. GC7 - Understanding of the methods of investigation and preparation of the brief for a design project. GC8 - Understanding of the structural design, constructional and engineering problems associated with building design.
KEY
The marker for new or ammended work will feature on the top corner of the page.
NEW WORK
GC9 - Adequate knowledge of physical problems and technologies and the function of buildings so as to provide them with internal conditions of comfort and protection against the climate. GC10
- The necessary design skills to meet building users’ requirements within the constraints imposed by cost factors and building regulations.
GC11 - Adequate knowledge of the industries, organisations, regulations and procedures involved in translating design concepts into buildings and integrating plans into overall planning.

CRITICAL REFLECTION This semester expanded on the work I had achieved within semester 1, continuing with the themes of developing derelict Newcastle into a 15-minute city it stated with in depth research into my chosen site of the Lord Colling wood pub. Looking at the forms that were existing on the shopping mall site I started to develop a narrative through modelling putting forward propositions of nature for my designs. At this stage I started to struggle to be able to group my ideas from semester one and the information I had discovered in semester two into a cohesive programme, after taking a step back from working due to the lockdown having really put a strain on my anxiety and motivation I slowly started to progress again with my work researching into the use of cork and promoting the use of circular economy, I quickly became fascinated with this material which has such huge opportunities yet is not used within the field of architecture enough. After deciding to provide provisions for housing, education, and walkability the focus was on promoting new connections in the community through a new work life balance of city centre living, studying the thresholds and spaces created in between to demonstrate the importance of city dwellings. I feel as though there is so may spaces within his project to focus that it was to much of a broad expanse, the sheer size of the site made it difficult to know what to focus on, this is what led me astray earlier in the semester, trying to uptake too much at once. After focusing on the relationship that housing has to the city centre, I felt much more comfortable with my project, I loved exploring the site though the eyes of the material cork, featuring it with all its properties in as much places as I possibly could. Additionally, the research and development of the site at night became incredibly important for safety and urban lighting, this night-time aspect of the project isn’t something that you usually focus on with thoughts staying to the building’s occupations during the day. This exploration into the night uses of the site I loved it gave a whole new perspective to the site than what I would have assumes leading me to key issues such as urban safety which had not initially crossed my mind. I hope to develop looking into the use of cork and night architecture in the future. After another brief time off due to the loss of my family dog and best friends suicide attempt I really got into the depth of the project that I had been hoping for, the exploration of city living is so important at the moment with covid coming around people are starting to realise the slipping standards and cost that city living has and this needs to be changed.

The ownership of land to maximise the profit and power at the determinant to local communities, focusing on the redevelopment of Newcastle city centre through the use of a new Economic model and 15 minute city living.
The Robinsons concrete island is the groups perspective of the metro centre with the influences of the Patrick kellier films. This video takes the groups theme of power generated from each of our own personal protagonists’ views. The videos protagonist goes through a journey within the Metro Centre and surrounding area to try and find a place where they can avoid the feeling of overriding authoritative powers.
11
“ Those behind follow me too.
Protagonist
You don’t always notice them, but they’re there
These glass doors separate me from the calm of the island and the hum from within. The canopy above dragged me into the complicated maze of consumerism, watching the hustle of people flow through the doors. I keep my head low as they walk past and I hope to be just be a blurry figure in their day, playing no part in what’s before me
And they notice you
I ventured deeper, following arrows that pointed in every direction, all leading to the same inevitable end. The consumer giants viciously towered over me, looking down on their next victim. Each battling to gain my attention. The largest of the stores hosted queues that snaked deep into the flow of crowds moving by. I watched as they waited, retained by barriers. As I am drawn closer to the pit, lights flashed brighter, more violently; sounds grew louder as the voices from the tv screens echoed even more intensely. I am immersed in a wave of a rushing hypnotised crowd. I follow disillusioned.
There they are again. There are rumours of blind spots in a ‘Village’ on this island. This place is like a labyrinth, where must I go? Where am I? What turn do I take? Am I lost? I dread to think of how many caught my glance.
I’m weary eyed now and all too aware that any sound I make above that of a very low whisper is picked up, every movement I make is observed. I have to act – do act, from habit that becomes instinct – in the assumption that even the slightest murmur is overheard and except in darkness, every stride scrutinised. I cannot stay here. I try to leave, people surround me everywhere, the last-minute Christmas rush before the island is locked down. The shoppers are controlled by the dominance of the hierarchy, impulsively playing their part on this little island. I feel like I can hide in plain sight, but I can still feel the watching from above. Every corner and every turn.
I arrive and am invited to ‘come on in’. Is this my solace?
CONCRETE ISLAND The different scenes within the video represent different types of power that the protagonist encounters throughout their journey. The different spaces occupied have deeper meanings to the character that is not visible through the naked eye, this story is told by the narrator. The journey from within the Metrocentre to the Brewery site explores these transformations in power and control.
12
A moat filled with vehicles surrounded the island. Each halted in front of an empty billboard. Its power was lost, voice muted… but the cars still looked towards it for affirmation. Like sirens, it once lured stray sailors into the jaws of the mall. But now, its power had worn away, and a paper skeleton was all that remained.
I must search for a blind spot, I am itching to document my findings Will this suffice? Perhaps under here? There is no surveillance to be seen above I’ve uncovered an abundance of empty lots
I am forced out by these expanding networks where we lie in the shadows, I stumble toward the edge where the tunnel connects to the unobserved.
free from the watching eye “ “ If only I knew how to get into them without being seen? It seems of no use; I think I must leave this place Still they watch on every corner Was that a message for me? Are they on to me? Are they looking for me?”
Graffiti sprawled the walls, I felt the emotions of people protesting for their freedom, the citizens who did not want to be a part of the system anymore. Scrawling their search for liberty on the walls beneath my hand. The echo reminiscent of the voices who had stood before me. The darkness of the tunnel closing in as I wander through. On the coasts of the island was a forest path. As I walk along it, nestled among the hedgerows, I come across a large concrete expanse. It seems peaceful here I see a pram with no seat. Weeds growing through the cracks in the ground. I think about the journey I have been on and how this place seems so separate from the powers but so connected still. It speaks of a history that there once was. Beat. I prefer it here, I think I’ll stay here a while.

Mapping of metrocentre land ownership and puchase prices
After learning about the owner ship of the Metrocentre a proposal to create a 15 minute city, developed by Professor Carlos Moreno to localise, working, learning, outdoor activities, shopping and health etc. The 15-minute city proposal helps to improve living conditions, the economy and local environment, taking away the larger corporate powers that create what we know as a city today. Transforming cities into local community hubs with small businesses, social housing and low carbon footprints, a step needed to be taken for society to be constrictive for all types of people.

This gave me access to Newcastle city council’s worksheet of National Non-Domestic Rates for tax on Empty Properties October 2020, which lists all the private properties exempt from tax due to them being empty for more than 6 months. There is 612. This leaves a percentage of Newcastle privately owned left to go to a derelict state where the city council cant intervene, this also impacts on my protagonist the homeless person who is highly impacted by this Derelict Newcastle.

Taras properties is an overseas registered company owned by David and Simon Reuben estimated wealth of £16 billion. Their company is registered in the British Virgin Islands where there is a Zero tax rate. Taras Properties owns a significant section of Newcastle city centre, the whole east side of pilgrim street is under their ownership and has sat largely undeveloped for many years. In 2017 the Land registry department of the government made a public database of all foreign owned commercial property in England. December 2020 there is 2095 overseas owned commercial properties showing the lack of investment within the north east as a whole but the property ownership in Newcastle has gone up to 425.

T DAN SMITH Researching into the achievements that smith made during his time as councillor in Newcastle has wildly changed my perceptions of him. No, not everything he did turned out the best for the city or was seen in the best of lights, but he made more impact on Newcastle in his 6 years as leader of Newcastle city council than anyone has done before or after him. Many of his plans remained unfinished due to his arrest but leads you to wonder what would have become of Newcastle if he had continued his development.

REDEVELOPMENT 1960 Looking into the 1962 plans for redevelopment in Newcastle, produced by T Dan Smiths council, it shows the plans that once stood for the city centre from Haymarket to central station. The main features of Smiths plans were to provide upper and lower levels to the city providing separate platforms for people and cars. This major pedestrianisation of Northumberland street which we now see as normal came around during his era, this has played a huge part in Newcastle’s development as a shopping city and still has an important role today with the pedestrian streets spreading throughout the city. This drawing highlights parts of the city that never came around after smith’s departure, the mix of shopping, residential and transport links are a reflection of the 15 minute city.

SKYWALKS
Drawing of difference between T Dan Smiths plans for the city centre and what was built
photographs and mapping of skywalk locations
The pedestrian skywalks built throughout the city to overpass the new motorway system smith devised were once a huge part of Newcastle’s future plans, since Smith’s imprisonment these unfinished paths display an important part of Newcastle’s unfinished development. The northern skywalks are used frequently to cross the major motorway, linking the eastern part of the city to the centre, but the lower skywalks have become deserted with many not even knowing some of these exist. The underpass of swan house an unnerving trip in the dark, many of these paths aren’t seen fit for purpose anymore, reflecting the current state of Newcastle unfit for purpose.

About DEAL (https://doughnuteconomics.org/about)
DOUGHNUT ECONOMY The actual doughnut shape is made from two aspects, the social foundation with anything below lies human poverty and the ecological ceiling beyond which is the planets dilapidation. As stated in the book doughnut economics these two factors are aet things we should set to avoid, whilst the space in the middle will change through time and evolutions.
COVID The COVID-19 pandemic has left the country in financial ruins, the north east economy was struggling to begin without adding in Brexit and a pandemic to the issues. The lack of hospitality settings open through-out the year 2020 has left most businesses struggling to stay open, this applies to small businesses and companies with 11 chain stores in Eldon Square shutting down. This gives ample opportunity for local development though a new economic framework for sustainable growth, implementing a new system for the city of Newcastle to boost its economy using the local community.
24
The Social Foundation categories are from the social priorities agreed in the Sustainable Development Goals (UN, 2015) whilst the Ecological Ceilings categories are the nine planetary boundaries defined by Earth-system scientists (Steffen et al., 2015). There is a high focus on design within this system, questioning the purpose, networks, governance, ownership and finance with these categories shaping the economic model and shape of the world currently. FUTURE CHANGES Alongside the 15-minute city infrastructure plan there needs to be an economical approach to Newcastle for it to develop, it needs to be able to support itself financially. This is where the circular economy and doughnut model are needed, the use of design to reuse and reduce waste is key to being not only ecologically sustainable but economically to. In the pie diagram is the proposed changes and additions for Newcastle to align with the doughnut economic model through economic, social and urban changes to the city.

THE LORD COLLINGWOOD The lord Collingwood pub was a striking part of my semester 1 research, the once public house is surrounded by Eldon square keeping its original interiors unlike the similar listed facades on the street. Located on the junction of Clayton street and nelson street the public house is named after Vice Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood who was an admiral of the Royal Navy, notable as a partner with Lord Nelson in several of the British victories of the Napoleonic Wars, and frequently as Nelson’s successor in commands. It is one of the only whole Georgian buildings left standing on the Eldon square site.

LORD HISTORY
COLLINGWOOD
Circa 1837, probably by John Wardle, for Richard Grainger. Sandstone ashlar; Welsh slate roof with brick chimneys. 4 storeys, 7 windows, the outer 3 at either side in semi-circular bowed projections. Renewed central double door and over light in Tuscan porch with columns in antis. Renewed doors in centre of bows and renewed ground-floor windows in plain reveals. Upper floors have sashes with glazing bars in plain reveals, aprons and moulded sills except to that above porch. Floor bands; prominent second-floor cornice; top cornice. Roof hipped at right. It is Grade 2 listed and is currently being used as an arcade after its rear extension in 2008.
32
BEHIND THE PUB This pub gave way to the exploration of the surrounding site, behind is located the units of Eldon square which surround the pub, when it was built in the 80’s. This new build wraps around the exterior of the Lord Collingwood Pub, providing it with intimacy between Eldon Square and the history of Newcastle. It once sat next to a fish market and then later Eldon’s green market, it now is in close proximity to Grainger market. With the everchanging city landscape The Lord Collingwood remains the same.
33
FORM MODELING To begin my exploration of this site I started by looking at the forms of solid and void that are created by this junction and mall relationships. The solid stone Georgian building contrasted with the lightweight steel frame that creates the shell for the shopping centre. Through exploring these forms, it gave opportunity to see the types of spaces that lie within the mall and the expanse of the plans that surround the old pub overshadowing what I once thought was an already tall building.
34
The linear styling of the grids that make the shopping centre made me try and create this juxtaposition between the styles of form. Using the solid, heavy straight masses I contrasted this with light wight flowing fabric to wrap around the Lord Collingwood model to create a cast of the imprint that the pub leaves on the site.
35
GC3.3
ITERATIONS From this I began to experiment with ways of using these fluid models I had created to make a piece of architecture for the site, twisting the form upside down to make a feature roof to connect the old Lord Collingwood Building and the new Eldon square. These iterations weren’t very successful with more research into the context of the site needed to create an architectural programme.
36
A street perspective began to show the areas that I wanted to focus on in context to the city and project, focusing on bringing nature back into the city to create a sustainable city whilst using fluid and bold architectural moved to establish a new feature for my 15 minute city.

The deterioration of the high street is incredibly prevalent within Newcastle city centre, this is seen in the units located directly behind the Lord Collingwood pub where Topshop once stood. Within the 21st century online brands fetch more profit that physical stores, reaching more people that a single unit would. Asos, which is only online agreed to buy Topshop the brand but none of the brands’ 70 stores, putting at risk the jobs of 2,500 high-street shop workers. This leaves the questions of where do shopping malls go from here? How do you progress with an ever-online dimension?

DIGITALISATION With the digitalisation of shopping its only leads to the death of the city, becoming a derelict Newcastle. However not everything online is great, there can be glitches in the system proposing questions is there a way of using the digital in store to boost the economy in cities. The Death of the Surrounding Neighbourhood happens once an area becomes stagnate, landlords stop wanting to invest in their properties since they likely would not recover their investments through rents. Which leads to no one wanting to move or live in a city without amenities and retail. Once property values decrease, declines will occur in tourism, commerce, and the aesthetic appeal of a location.
40
Chernobyl Beginning to think about derelict cities Chernobyl is the most prominent city that has now been empty for 35 years after a nuclear accident that occurred on Saturday 26 April 1986, near the city of Pripyat in the north of the Ukrainian SSR in the Soviet Union. Even though it has been part of a nuclear disaster nature still thrives on the site turning it into a nature reserve to protect wildlife and integrate new species into the uninhabited lands. Would the site at Eldon Square be so densely populated in 50 years’ time if it were left to the elements?
41
References
DERELICT TOPSHOP From Chernobyl I created a drawing of what I think Topshop in Eldon Square would look like if nothing were done to save our cities from the emptiness that is coming with the move to online shopping. The sprouting of nature through the concrete with the abandoned mall provides an insightful image, the addition of nature to these LED lit box spaces shouldn’t be seen as a negative thing that impacts a buildings quality once left derelict, it should be incorporated into the designs of urban spaces.
42
GREENERY MODEL From this exploration of urban greenery I then went back to my solid cast model of the lord Collingwood to create an image of what the site could look like with the same levels of biodiversity seen within my 50 years ahead sketch and Chernobyl.

Learning about the sustainability of materials within architectural practice and the way we think about the life cycle of materials placed within out projects, expanding on how we can make better choices than we currently do.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY To begin to unlearn the choices we make as architects when it comes to materials we need to understand the life cycle of materials and how these end of life choices should effect the materials we choose. The European Union produces more than 2.5 billion tonnes of waste every year. It is currently updating its legislation on waste management to promote a shift to a more sustainable model known as the circular economy. The circular economy is a model of production and consumption, which involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products as long as possible. In this way, the life cycle of products is extended. In practice, it implies reducing waste to a minimum. When a product reaches the end of its life, its materials are kept within the economy wherever possible. These can be productively used again and again, thereby creating further value

DESIGNING FOR LIFE The next thing to evaluate would be how we design, creating buildings that can be repurposed for a future life. The grid system seen within shopping centre provides a great framework that can be moved and reassembled again and again. As architects our job shouldn’t stop once the building is built it is our responsibility to see it though that the architecture lasts for the next 100 years not only the next 20. By designing for deconstruction and ease of refurbishment we can achieve this.
46
Cork is a material that is 100% natural, reusable and recyclable and is one of the world’s most versatile materials. The cork industry has thousands of products from the harvested cork, can be used for insulation or facades within the architecture industry but is not widely used despite its qualities. I will explore the use of cork within the construction industry fabricating my own use of cork for my project. The process to make cork means that no trees are cut they are simply debarked and then grow it back, this also acts as a carbon sink.

PROPERTIES OF CORK Low density and lightness. Cork cells are 90% occupied by air. Waterproofing. The suberine and the waxes present in the cell wall make the cork practically impermeable to liquids and gases. Holes in the hexagonal shape of your wall full of air make it inaccessible to other compounds.
EMBODIED CO2 Embodied carbon means all the CO2 emitted in producing materials. It’s estimated from the energy used to extract and transport raw materials as well as emissions from manufacturing processes. The embodied carbon of a building can include all the emissions from the construction materials, the building process, all the fixtures and fittings inside as well as from deconstructing and disposing of it at the end of it’s lifetime. Buildings are currently responsible for 39% of global energy related carbon emission, to create a sustainable lifestyle and circular economy this needs to be addressed.
48
Acoustic insulation and low sound transmission. Low density and high porosity make the majority of the waves of sound adsorbable and transform into heat energy. Cork is an acoustic corrector since it absorbs more than 60% of the sound waves that affect the surface. High resistance to movement or high coefficient of friction. The suction effect caused by the surface of the cells makes it a very important property when it comes to using cork as a covering material. Compressibility, elasticity and flexibility. The high air content of its cells allows it to be compressed to almost half without loosing flexibility, and recovering its shape and volume when it stops pressing. Durability, stability and rigidity. Lignin and the polysaccharides of its cell wall provide it with rigidity and make it resistant over time. Higroscopic. Hydrated environmental conditions.

CORK HOUSE by Matthew Barnett Howland with Dido Milne and Oliver Wilton This project was shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize 2019 Sited within the area of a Grade II Listed mill house dating back to the early nineteenth century, the Cork House reflects and respects the natural surroundings in form and construction, this setting is similar to the site in newcastle with the Georgian Lord Collingwood in close proximity. An entirely cork construction, with solid structural cork walls and roof, the building has exceptionally low whole life carbon. The biogenic construction of prefabricated cork blocks and engineered timber is carbon negative at completion and has remarkably low whole life carbon. All the components can be reused or recycled, and the expanded cork blocks have been made using by-product and waste from cork forestry and the cork stopper industry. This is the standard of sustainabilty that architects and I should be looking to achieve.
50
THE CORK STUDIO The Cork Studio, a garden building made almost entirely out of cork, has been constructed by Studio Bark as a building prototype that can be completely recycled, reused or composted. To challenge the architecture industry’s dependence on “unhealthy single-use materials”, London-based architects Studio Bark sought to demonstrate how one eco-friendly material can could be used to form an entire building envelope. “All of the elements in this solid cork building can be disassembled at the end of their useful life, and the individual components are either fully biodegradable or recyclable,” continued the studio. Throughout the studio every surface has a natural finish, without any toxic varnishes, meaning each part can be easily recycled after the building’s life.

GEORGIAN TILES Going back to the Georgian heritage of the Lord Collingwood and instead of using fake sandstone tiles to clad the building. using the historic influence and modern materials to make cork tiles in traditional Georgian patterns.
CORK FACADE I began to play with cork sheets to see the types of forms that could be created from this material. Deciding to work on façade pieces I built up layers of cork in various patterns to give shiplap effects like you would see with shingles or slate. These did not have the desired effect that I wanted, reaching for something modern yet reflective of the history of the site.
54
Georgian floor tiles are geometric ceramic tiles that were created with versatility in mind. Traditionally the tiles came in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. The tiles were used to create an infinite array of tessellating designs to compliment and decorate period architecture. Typically Georgian designs were neo-Classical in appearance predominantly using white and black tiles. Popular designs included large format chequerboards and octagon based patterns, along with Roman style micro mosaic schemes.
55

CORK TILES
I began to test this method of geometric patterned tiles to create a façade for my project, I started with using cork solely for the pattern and a simple smooth back which made it look like the tile glowed but I was hoping to use cork solely without having to add façade panels too. The other cork tiles were good but were not the pattern I was hoping to achieve.
56
This is the tile pattern I liked the most, the use of the triangles produced a depth to the shadow, the relief of the cork pattern meant that it created shadows on the tiles changing the perspective of the pattern with the movement of the light. These triangles will be represented within my dwelling façade.
57
HISTORIC ROUTES The context of the site gave way to greater city routes that I researched within my semester 1 project the old historic site before the erection of Eldon Square linked the east to the west of the city. Currently Eldon square blocks many of these paths meaning that you must walk through or around the whole of the site to reach your destination.
58
NEW ROUTES The addition of new routes through the site will be part of the focus of my project creating new pathways connecting parts of the site which have been unreachable for decades. This is to make the city more permeable and increase walkability within the city transforming it into a 15-minute city.

HOTSPOTS This is a map of the key location hotspots that surround the Eldon Square site, intentions to connect these in ways that does not involve long routes around the building. The connections of these hotspots will make the city more porous to the pedestrians that use it, decreasing the want and need for cars and traffic within the city.

SKYWALKS
THE GATE SCHOOL
My proposals for this new interconnectivity are to reintroduce T Dan Smiths skywalks routes that were never finished. The routes currently located to the north of the city are vital routes and frequently used, bring these down into the site of Eldon will further those strong routes that the city already uses.

The programme of my site entails introducing the elements needed for a 15-minute city, housing will be the focus making city living more accessible for low wage working class and families.

commercial space
PROGRAMME The programme of the site is incredibly important from my semester 1 research the implementation of my 15-minute city through walking, addition of city centre housing, using the circular economy to be as sustainable as possible whilst reducing the impact on the environment as well as the need for educational sites to boost qualifications and skills.
64
CURRENT PROGRAMME The currently programme within my site in Eldon Square consists of service spaces and commercial lets. This will be drastically changed to fit the ideal of a 15-minute city, with local business taking over from big chain franchises and the addition of housing and education to the areas.
65
NEW PROGRAMME This is my programme that I am suggesting for the site. Commercial shopping areas remain as they bring in valued economy, but these have been significantly reduced to the outside areas of the site, in addition the use of outdoor social areas for seating and relaxing once finished a day’s shopping. The centre of the site is reserved for the addition of new private city centre living, bringing the needed family and low-income living spaces to inhabit the city. Along with that there will be ground floor space within the site for educational workshops.

Name: Penelope Age: 17 Job: Student City living: Penelope left home at 16 after a row with her family. She has had a tough childhood and a rough up bringing she never thought that shed get a chance to live in the city centre as it costs too much for a student, she loves that she’s close to college and all her friends. She now has the independence she’s always craved.
BORNEO SPORENBURG Borneo Sporenburg is located within the eastern part of the Amsterdam docks. The design of these dwellings exploited the relationship tot the river for water activities they created 2500 lowrise dwellings. They were formed to be new reinterpretation of the traditional Dutch canal house. West 8 the architect decided that this repeating dwelling created opportunity for facade exploration. Providing an animated street elevation which has a focus on the individual residents. This is inspiration for the development of the form of my dwellings each architect has a different layout that brings different areas of solid and void into the plans, this will be needed to bring as much light as possible into the site.

Name: John Age: 43 Job: Carpenter City living: John was so pleased to get his own place, after his divorce he sofa surfed for a few months as he had no where to live. He loves the space that the flat gives him so he can have his children round at the weekends. The proximity to his work is amazing meaning he does not have to pay for a car anymore.
CLIENT Name: Ben, Laura and baby taylor Age: 25, 23, 1 Job: Unemployed City living: Laura is a young mother who is expecting her second child, the city centre provides her opportunities to seek out friends and things to do during the day with baby taylor. The storage that the flat offers means that baby taylors things all have a place and there is still more room to grow. Ben is training to be a carpenter after leaving school early with no grades, he loves that he can still get an education and profession at the age of 25 all right next to his house for nay last minute baby needs.
The client for this housing is crucial in forming dwellings that meet the brief and tailor to specific needs that are created by different profile types. My city centre flats will be target towards the types of people that usually don’t live in cities, families and people with low incomes. Single person flats within the city come at an expensive cost and usually not enough space, additionally this makes it even harder for families to locate to city centres.

This is the plan for a family flat, much bigger than the single person with 3 bedrooms this provides the space and integrated storage needed for a growing family within the city, making use of the grids it also provides additional balcony space for larger numbers meaning that there is adequate outdoor space for the children. The connection to the atrium brings the light into the depth of the plans during the day.

The commercial shopping facilities remain, connected now by the skywalk city routes that span across the city centre, the pedestrian streets give a tour of the centre. Hospitality locations with restaurants and bars for socialising as well as a play park to keep the kids entertained whilst having a coffee.

OVERLOOKING Safety on the site is crucial not only during the day but also at night, the arrows here display the areas of the playpark and the skywalk which need the most security, these are public places and are overlooked in the day from the commercial lets and at night by the housing so are always secure.
91
DAY PROGRAMME This section highlights the programmes that occur during the day to provide an element of safety from the numbers of people attending these units. The shopping mall, cafes and educational workshops are busy from early morning till evening with people over seeing both areas of the skywalk and playpark.
92
93
NIGHT PROGRAMME This section highlights the programmes that occurs at later night the residents return from work to overlook on both sides the internal garden and park as well as the skywalk. Additionally the positioning of the bar on the far right of the sight gives the park and main street life making sure these areas are busy when they need to be.

RESIDENT SAFETY Proving safety for city housing especially families is important for the atmosphere and community. The flats located within the site will have a private entrance, this will include a common room and shared post areas, these will all be private and wont be accessible to anyone without a key or code to enter. Another important part is the safety of the play park at night as its in a tight area.

NEO BANKSIDE BUILDING GARDEN The garden and playpark within the site will function the same as the NEO bankside building in London. Cork façade development this is the aesthetics of the housing but also adds privacy and biodiversity to the site too, the single material wall build and flexibility of cork provides opportunity for a complex design.
FACADE BLOCK The external façade through my design is reflective of my research into Georgian tiles and the geometric triangular shapes used within this period. My façade block is split in two diagonally creating two triangles. One is then pushed into the metre thick wall to create a defecate for a living wall to be added creating a façade ecology. The renders to the right show the aesthetics that this façade creates with the shadows highlighting the depth of the façade.
100
101
FACADE MODEL I created a model of my façade using cork to capture this change in textures and materials in real life, the geometric triangle pattern breaks up what could have been a solid expanse of plain cork. It was nice to experiment with a physical model rather than a render, the façade pattern emphasises the curves of the archway windows too.
102
From my model experimentation I drew up what my façade for the single person flats would look like, the high windows are exaggerated to let it as much light as possible within the cramped site, the steel is exposed from its concrete casing back to the original colour of yellow that it was when it was first installed this adds an element of colour to my natural facade

MFO PARK One goal for the MFO Park was to create a public space for the neighbourhood that could also serve as an event hall. The division between inside and outside is blurred, as well as the definition between park and building. Walls of vegetation define the interior and exterior perimeters of this park. Multiple species of vines have been planted to grow up the steel cables.
CORK PLANTER This is a cork planter that I made to experiment with the material when it comes to planting, using cork sheets I created a small plant pot that I could try to grow something in. For this experiment I chose cress as it is quick to grow and with limited time a floral plant or shrub would have taken too long for what I needed. I love the contrast in textures between the plant and the dappled effect of the cork it softens the material and will continue to do this on my façade.
106
On the ground, vines are planned in radial patterns around cables. On the second level, trenches are planted with a second tier of vines, directed towards a thinner network of cables. Plant selection was based on height and foliage specifications. A total of 104 varieties of perennial woody vines and creepers were chosen, including: wisteria, clematis, climbing rose, jasmine, honeysuckle, hops, knotweed, Virginia creeper, silver lace vine. This is the level of greenery that I aspire to be crated from my metal trellis on the shopping façade opposite my dwellings.

CLIMBING FACADE The plants I have chosen for my shopping façade on the sky walk is Star jasmine. Although tiny, the flowers of pictured star jasmine, Trachelospermum jasminoides, are highly fragrant. It is happy on an east-facing wall that is shaded for part of the day but gets some sun. these are perfect as the mall façade is east facing. This will cover the led façade to create a dappled light effect throughout the day and night.

Lighting is incredibly important in this site, the need for natural daylight for the dwellings as well as, light in deep spaces that are created in a dense for safety and reducing depression and exposure to fluorescent lighting. At night urban street lighting will keep the area and community safe from antisocial behaviour.
GC8.1, 2, 3 References http://andrewmarsh.com/apps/staging/ sunpath3d.html
SUN PATHS Natural lighting throughout the site is difficult the height of the surrounding properties as well as those on the site mean there is limited access to direct sunlight during the day, at the summer solstice at 58 degrees most of the site will be penetrated during the day with light this is limited when the sun begins to set in the west as the shopping centre is in the path, additionally the winter solstice at 11 degrees mean there is little to no direct sunlight reaching inside the site through the winter months. There are many things that can be done to further the amount of sunlight brought into the site.
110
DARKNESS The sun sets at 3pm during the winter solstice this leaves the site very dark, without natural light the skywalks paths would remain in darkness from early in the afternoon till mid morning, this would leave an uneasy atmosphere and only increase the amounts of antisocial behaviour in these areas.

BLUELIGHT The use of blue street lights has been seen in Glasgow Scotland and Tokyo, Japan. Glasgow, Scotland, introduced blue streetlighting to improve the city’s landscape in 2000. Afterward, the number of crimes in areas illuminated in blue noticeably decreased. The Nara, Japan, prefectural police set up blue streetlights in the prefecture in 2005, and found that the number of crimes decreased by about 9 percent in blue-illuminated neighbourhoods. Blue lighting is also used in some public toilets to discourage drug use. This simple change of colour will change the safety at atmosphere provided by the urban street lighting.

is a work which by its form evokes the sense of pedestrian movement through the space but which by its metaphorical intent speaks of the connectivity between the inner city precincts, encircling the CBD in the manner of jewels upon a necklace.
These are the forms of fun and playful urban lighting that I will use within the site, lighting furniture from under and spaced from directly above will reduce the need for lampposts close to the dwellings preventing unwanted light exposure to the housing. The blue light will be introduced at late nights to ward of any anti-social behaviour. The walkway is back lit from the LED façade shading the housing is the climbing plants located in front diminishing the LED screens from being too bright. The gallery walkway to the housing is a sensor light so will not remain on throughout the night when residents try to sleep.

It was important to get the shape of the skywalk correct, the proximity to the shopping centre provides problems with privacy, this led to the shape of the curves following the staggered balconies of the dwellings so that you’re always equidistant away from the housing fronts. SHADE PLANTS
URBAN PLAN The urban ecology plan for any city takes years to progress to achieve its full potential these show diagrams of the phases of planting over the years and the progression of ecology over the site, from yearly flowers and allotment planting to the addition of larger trees for shading of shopping and seating areas preventing prevailing winds. The urban landscaping guides pedestrians though the city inviting and protecting areas with their placements.

Efficient use of vertical surfaces in inner city spaces to encourage biodiversity, this is facilitated in my living wall dwelling facades. This has a significant reduction of sub-micron particle pollution, improving air quality and is also aesthetically pleasing alternative to enhance an old existing building or newbuild. These are the types of plants that would work in shady conditions in a living wall system to maximize the conditions of my façade.
133
This perspective demonstrates the variety of planting throughout the skywalk routes, the planting will grow over the years to provide the dwellings with more privacy.
134
135
REFLECTIVE CONCLUTION In reflection of my project, I feel like that the strongest aspects of my project are the development of the lighting and material strategies, the depth of the cork research used helped inform me of what was possible with the material and how usefully is to be able to achieve a carbon neutral dwelling and end of life schemes for the project with all cork being 100% recyclable, with out the use of adhesives which I focused on staying clear of the development of my cork blocks and façade had to come hand in hand. The lighting strategies during the day and night were for a long time the focus of my project, making sure that it was possible to get enough direct daylight into my dwellings as I did not want to be adding to the already problematic city centre living with small windows, dark and small spaces. I feel like the ecology on the site could me improved more, the use of biodiversity in cities is becoming more and more imperative, there is greenery that has been added to the site but there needs to be further research into the different types of planting and specifically what these would do for the site. Additionally, due to the positioning of my site it was incredibly difficult to represent clearly I feel as though some of my drawings can be difficult to position due to the amount of forms that had been created within the site. This needs to be more clearly displayed though diagrams. I found that this semester it was difficult to work from home the studio atmosphere has been deeply missed when developing an in depth project, the constant reassurance and studio culture is just as important in design development as the drawings themselves I found. With the additional home/covid pressures it made it quite difficult to complete my work to the same standard I would usually at the same time. The journey from my home to university meant that covid testing twice before studio impossible with over an hour on different public transports. This meant that repetitive home/wok life was difficult, and I struggled to get going working from home. If I was to mark my own work I would give it a 64.
