PREFACE I am focussing on the timber industry in Vancouver. Historically, this is the industry that the city was built on, and looking forward, this is the industry and material of the future with huge sustainable benefits. Vancouver aims to be the greenest city by 2020 and therefore to reduce our current carbon footprint in the built environment, Vancouver must lead in the forefront as a city that is pushing the globe into more sustainable living. Unfortunately, currently the industry is in decline due to a decline in demand from the US, one of British Columbia’s biggest importer of timber, as well as a pine beetle infestation that has spread throughout the forests of BC, making a lot of the wood unusable and unsellable. Many of the lumberjacks that have been put out of work due to the closure of sawmills have recently been protesting through the streets of Vancouver filling the streets with lorries. This is a big issue in the city and its visible. So there are a few events at play that will affect what happens to the industry. The city is currently preparing for an earthquake in the near future, and with much of the city being made up of concrete and glass, these will be affected the most in the event of an earthquake. The city of Vancouver is therefore in need of a seismic upgrade to ensure that the city can withstand it with as little damage as possible. I am proposing a timber innovation centre on Mitchell island. Its aim is to reinvigorate the dying timber industry by allowing the workers that have been in the industry for generations to develop the material to futuristic possibilities. A new part of the industry that is isolated and protected from any potential disease and infestation.

TIMBER With wood being the staple trade of Canada for most of the 19th century, it encouraged the building of villages, towns, roads and contributed largely to its economic growth. Logging was essentially a winter occupation as the trees were easier to fell when their sap was not running. Canada holds 10% of the world’s forests, most of which are publicly owned. The largest of the forests are found in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia. I will focus into the forests and sawmills in British Columbia as Canadas richest forest diversity is found along its coast, some of which include Douglas Fir, Western Hemlock, Western Red, Cedar, Silver / Balsam, Fir, Yellow Cypress, White Pine and Spruce. A decline in the demand for timber in the recent years has caused multiple sawmills across British Columbia to shut down temporarily and some permanently, putting thousands of workers out of a job and hundreds more looking at reduced shifts. Two main reasons for this are; low lumber market prices across North America and the destruction caused by wildfires and a severe mountain pine beetle infestation, both linked to global warming — have also created acute shortages of wood fibre in B.C. that will take decades to replace.

Hundreds of Lumberjacks take to the streets of Vancouver protesting against the closure of several major Sawmills across the country. Many out of jobs and with reduced shifts, the skilled workers that have had generartions in the same industry cut off from the industry.

The transmountain pipeline runs under the full length of his community, Merrit, BC. Coldwater first nations sits on a aquifer of potable water that they can drink without treatment.

The Pine bettle investation of the British Columbia forests has spread at an unimaginable pace. This has contributed to the mass closure of sawmills across British Columbia. With timber unusable this is an enormous setback for the timber industry. My proposal looks to create a hub where timber is safe from attack while solutions are created within the innovation centre.

The beetle has a one-year lifespan in most of its range. Lifespan may be shorter or longer depending on local temperatures. Adult beetles colonize new host trees in July or August. Female beetles release chemicals called aggregation pheromones, which communicate with other beetles to go to that tree. Female beetles eat tunnels (“galleries�) into the inner bark of the tree to lay eggs. Newly hatched larvae eat further into the tree. Larvae usually spend the winter in the tree and complete their development the following spring; pupating in June or July. Lodgepole pine is an important commercial tree harvested to produce timber in western Canada. But the land area where lodgepole pine grows is shrinking, and remaining stands of this tree are experiencing unprecedented attacks from mountain pine beetle. At the same time, the demand for wood is increasing. As a result, increasing the amount of useful timber that can be harvested from the remaining forest is becoming more important. Lodgepole pine forests are often very dense and slow growing, making it difficult to ensure tree harvesting is commercially viable. Thinning (limiting the number of trees in an area) can increase how fast the trees grow, resulting in larger logs at harvest, but also affecting the total amount of wood produced.

In 1920, Fuller wished to build a sustainable autonomous family dwelling. The house displyed forward thinking and influential innovations in prefabrication and sustainability.


SITE Mitchell Island is located between Vancouver, Sea Island and Richmond. The island was once the home of the area’s first successful pioneer farmer: Alexander Mitchell. “Mitchell recognized the importance of establishing a permanent link to Vancouver from North Richmond and successfully argued for the Fraser Street Bridge to be constructed in 1893. A historically argricultural site, the Island has grown to become a heavily industrial piece of land and hosts a number of warehouses and sawmills. The sawmills that The only way to get on and off the island by road or walking is through on- and off-ramps near the middle of the Knight Street Bridge. There is also a bus stop near the exit and entrance from the bridge; however, buses do not travel on the island itself.

As Mitchell Island falls into the ‘safe zone’ for a probable earthquake, it would be an ideal site to develop what may be a supply system to the city in preparation for upgrading the city’s infrastructure and moving to timber typologies to replce the existing and out dated concrete and glazing city make up.

FINAL DECLARATION Vancouver’s once functioning sawmills and timber industry have been in decline over the past few years largely due to a changing economy and a mountain pine beetle epidemic. With Vancouver’s “Greenest City action plan” set in place, as well as a high magnitude earthquake predicted in the near future, timber is the material that will be the most suitable to replace the current city make up and prevent future damage. Mitchell island, home to three major sawmills in the industry now seems a fallen industrial dystopia with the colossal sawmills now still, Fraser river a graveyard for timber logs that cannot be processed. With the foundations already in place from a rich history of timber processing and production, I seek to revive the industry and highlight the traditional methods as well as allow space for advanced research and innovative ideas, all with a sustainable future with wood at the forefront. The Timber Innovation Centre on Michell Island aims to be the start of many that will follow with the reopening of sawmills that have undergone curtailment across British Columbia. With an innovation bridging across and connecting Mitchell island to mainland Vancouver, the resources can be enhanced and modernised while preserving the true nature of the existing structures. The project aims to embody and showcase the complete life cycle of wood. From the starting process of being grown, to cut down, to its journey downstream the Fraser river to a sawmill, and finally to the point where it is decided on what it will become in the built environment. The innovation centre will provide spaces for high tech engineers to experiment and create technologies for a future earthquake proof Vancouver. A platform for biologists to learn about the pine beetle and how they can be contained, as well as working with timber that has already been affected, this would aim to allow all processed timber usable. The Timber Innovation Centre invites the public to gain an insight into the golden timber age, they will be able to visit the island and purchase products while being immersed in the timber production line.
