ILLUSTRATED REFLECTIVE REPORT

Emily Ming Orlando Harper Newcastle University School of Architecture and Urban Planning Architecture BA K100 Studio: Ghost in the Machine Tutors: Cara Lund and Matthew Margetts

To solve the climate crisis, we need to develop not only long term sustainable and regenerative but also inspirational solutions to critical urban issues that can be readily understood, appreciated and assimilated by locals, end user groups and residents. How can we de-couple growth from emissions and both look at and also use waste as a source and resource, and then design and build sustainable buildings without having to compromise on design inspiration, quality or price? The building sector is one of the largest consumers of raw materials and energy. Consequently, holistic sustainability must now be considered when constructing and developing buildings. This is fundamental and particularly important to this project which focuses around minimising and re-using waste products. 2

3

Starting the year by investigating interfaces and infrastructures, systems and systemic design helped me to ground and widen my interest in waste, it’s negative standing in society and also understand why we ‘waste’ our resources, where it goes and what impact it has long term. Waste is a pejorative word. My project tries to change this by celebrating the ‘theatre’ of waste. Food waste that can be used in anaerobic digestors that provide the electricity and energy for the site and by not seeing derelict spaces as waste but rather as re-adaptable and re-usable and frameworks able to be repurposed. My tutors helped me to question how waste is viewed, at all scales; from table to factory. The Exchange challenges the current perception of waste and sets out to explore the potential for changing the waste system, not only in food waste but in retail, architecture and design and in levels of global consumption. Ultimately, it is envisaged that The Exchange will be a model for the circular economy showing the people of Coventry how the reuse and re-development of the existing fabric of the site and surrounding area coupled with a circular production of food and use of waste products on site can help drive a new and sustainable understanding of city wide building development and construction. The masterplan is driven by the needs of locals and looks to the future. In this respect the masterplan is conceived as the ‘community architecture’ of the 21st Century. I have researched the work of the Japanese Metabolists, particularly that of Kenzo Tange, Fumiko Maki and Kazuo Shinohara. In Shinohara’s work I was interested in the use of insitu concrete in juxtaposition with finer materials such as plaster, metal sheeting and glass. The modular, unit-like and transient nature of much of modern Japanese architecture and its consequent relationship with the materials and the creation of space has been a key factor in the development of my scheme.

FUTURE

The design of The Exchange proposes a level of environmental and sustainable design that makes the whole site a self-sufficient unit in terms of food and aims to achieve and resource a minimum of 50% of its energy requirements ‘on-site’. In addition to this the masterplan will quadruple the amount of multi-use green space available for public use creating a localized carbon sink and sustainably reducing the carbon footprint of the development.

BACKGROUND PRESENT

>j]qY >Yje]j

The approach of designing an urban space centred on the importance of relationships derived from a circular economy also led me to investigate my site by finding pieces of information in the immediate environment and placing them together, thereby establishing deeper connections and relationships other than those that are explicitly purely visual or literal (that is somewhat superficial and transitory). Challenging the Miesian idea of ‘wiping the slate clean’ I have looked at how I can develop my design utilising the fragments of the historic city and recognised pedestrian routes, connections and infrastructure that currently bind the urban fabric together. This idea of place and memory is a key factor in The Exchange that stiches the existing to the new by retaining the recognisable principal urban massing and layout of the area with new buildings that reuse the material from the previous buildings onsite. These buildings can, in due course, be ‘de-constructed’ and new buildings with new uses adopted under the same circular economy principles but retaining the ‘memory fragments’ that allow people to identify with the area over time. This framework allows that vitally important visual and embedded personal connection from generation to generation of place, which, over time, establishes the recognisable character of urban centres Technology and construction are imperative as a factor for change, but this must be in tandem with an understanding of how repurposing and recycling materials and the utilisation of space changes the environmental operation of a building. When developing the proposals for my site the idea of both construction and deconstruction was considered. ‘The Exchange’ has been designed so that it is adaptable, therefore if the purpose of the site were to change, the building could change, be remodelled and re-used along with it. The technology report influenced and honed my design and allowed me to further develop the idea that people within complex and restaurant see a circular economy not only on their plate, but in the operation and functioning of the building around them.

From rubbish bin to runway

The studio has been looking into the ‘era of hyper-consumption’ and how this is changing ‘the face and fabric of our High Streets.’ The fashion industry is one of the world’s highest pollutants. Reworking and reimagining the production, manufacturing and distribution process is therefore imperative to continue sustainably.

9

Our project was centred around Newcastle city centre’s high street. Global high street chains populate this area and to localise our interests we focused on Newcastle’s bespoke tailors and their offcuts destined for the rubbish pile. Alongside the main shopping street (Northumberland Street) we located six tailors and collected three bags of offcuts.

10

From here we went fishing in skips and started to accrue materials and assemble our garment. We played around with the satirical and ironic nature of making monarchical dress out of rubbish. With the idea of creating a garment fit for a King. We exaggerated the recognisable elements; the robe is made up of strips of offcut material and a large

reel of netting found in a skip tied around moulded chicken wire. The ruff is also strung from netting and the crown is made up of bunting, filled with balloons that were in a rubbish bin.

Designers are beginning to take up the challenge to promote sustainable and repurposed fashion and the high street must also start to accept responsibility for nurturing and fostering understanding in this area. Although our runway creation will not be hitting the high street soon, it has helped further our understanding to reduce and alleviate pollution and waste from the fashion industry.

‘Programmatic layering upon vacant terrain to encourage dynamic co-existence of activities and to generate, through their interface, unprecedented events.’1 In the Primer we explored areas of Coventry and a novel by JG Ballard and looked at the implicit effects and parallels in both to our wider society. In particular we looked at methods and theories of mapping. Mapping is not restricted to preliminary site surveys or data collection but rather extends generatively into the formation of the whole design itself. In the Primer we sought to understand and adopt new mapping and recording techniques as relevant aspects of the development of the theories on which the master plan should develop and be based. These included studies of the techniques of the tangible and intangible aspects of recording and mapping through assemblage and mapping through notation. The identification of ‘protagonists’ or end-users has embedded a social narrative into the development of the design and, through the more crucial elements of the characters involved, magnified the need for change and the introduction of systemic design into the area. Through this line of thought it is intended that, through this line of thought, the adding and overlaying of further mapping and collage which has been altered by the systems underpinning and implemented in the proposals, this line of thought can be carried beyond the end point of this project well into the future. Key to my own personal understanding of the re-use and recycling process has been my experiments with recycling material, including concrete and aggregates and reforming these in panels and insitu structures incorporating glass and re-used material set into the concrete. 1

J.G. Ballard Reading Kingdom Come Chapter Six ‘Going Home’

The task was to map the tangible and intangible elements of a character within a chosen chapter. Focusing on Sergeant Falconer, the protagonist within chapter six, yet a subliminal character throughout the novel I responded to the way she was interacting and reacting with the system and infrastructure. The quote ‘unsettled the ramshackle construction that she had built around herself in Brooklands, a card castle of compromises and half-truths that threatened to collapse on to her’ is illustrated in the collage, showing the complexity and duplicity the character faces. I selected metaphors from the passage and translated them into a hierarchy in the image.

As a studio we highlighted the systems at play in Coventry and focused on how they are manifested in the physical and hidden connections. We were encouraged to represent some form of movement or change, so that the viewer would not see the system as static, but rather as an interchangeable force. The composite map is a collective of the studio’s system maps, located around the four sites which sit within Coventry’s ring road. The mapping exercises and discussions helped us to identify the troubled systems and areas which we were asked to develope and resolve.

POP-UP MODEL

-MOVEMENT-

J.G. Ballard Reading High Rise Chapter Four ‘Up’ -STATIC-

.Class .Pollution

Coventry was a hub for manufacturing and is located in the centre of the midlands automotive and aerospace cluster. Over hundreds of years it has different industries of manufacture; including textile (especially silk), watchmaking and then the motor industry. These have been mapped onto Coventry within the ring road. However, there were many more factories outside the ring road. Therefore, the movement map indicates this with the shading highlighting the external clusters.

20

Within the ring road there are very few green spaces. The map shows that the majority of green arenas are within close proximity to the university sites. The hedges, trees and evergreens on this site have been mapped. In the movement map the orange lines indicate the trees that will shed their leaves. The clusters indicate where there is the greenest space.

Filtering chapter four for the repetitive and main themes and systems that we discussed in the studio. The above words are a selection that represent the character Helen interacts with, from her perspective. The implications of these systems create a divide, physically and metaphorically, within the tower block the novel is set around and envision. ‘[T]he immense weight of concrete stacked above them’ as the poverty line. The popup interactive model represents the disparity of wealth, the ostentatious and vulgar to the restricted apartment below. The images and words that emanate this disappear when the pop-up book is closed, and you can no longer view the dislocation, such as viewing the tower block from the outside.

This immersive interface model is a moment of exchange between the viewer and the system of waste, and its relation to the circular economy. The crass personification of a toilet and loo roll engages the viewer with idea of disposal and everyday systems of waste. On the loo roll is the journey of a plastic bottle and a china mug. These ‘stories’ manifest the greater issues of plastic’s impact on the environment, and the continuous trajectory of upcycling and mending broken items rather than sending them to landfill and purchasing more.

STUDIO MANIFESTO

From all points of analysis, we must consider the counterargument, that resistance to systems should be considered as much as the function of the system itself. And, through mapping interactions with the system we are able to layer multi viewpoints building up a narrative. Public realms from the basis of our study, all our systems interact (whether tangible or intangible) with individuals. The main public arenas are the most accessible parts of the city, and therefore the most important. Through analysing J. G. Ballard’s novels, we were able to find tropes in who owns and runs the systems. Through this hierarchy we discussed how all facets and dimensions of an issue should be considered. From the primer exercise we talked through the importance of looking at each system from the point of engagement and then moving to the wider system, from individual to city scale. Through this we can also begin to see how the systems overlap with one another. By considering these multiple scales we can begin to establish a narrative which encourages more focused explorations. The studio also considered the weaknesses of the site and areas we must focus on further. We concluded that; Coventry is not a ‘typical’ city, either spatially, socio-economically or historically. That we were to focus within the area of the ring road a geographical limitation of the city centre. That as an individual we do not know how it ‘feels’ to be there, and that since we are not locals we are approaching urban analysis in a scientific and data-based perspective. With this in mind we agreed that we need to be conscious of our own preconceptions when we visit, and not only be aware of the individuals take, but also of the collective view. Finally, we agreed that moving to our next form of analysis we may have to deal with issues of teamwork and communication.

IMPORTANT TOWN BUT… NOT A BEAUTIFUL ONE” )0),!

Over the course of Primer our studio was able to develop and eventually declare the motives and views of the group. Through our analysis we were able to establish that information is useless unless compared/ being given in context. And, that multiple system interacts with one another. In terms of developing on from our chosen themes we must consider that design should be thought through at all scales and at all stages of development we use modelling as a process. By choosing a system we choose to investigate through a specific lens, and explore the place through unemotional, intangible methods. Through many processes, such as mapping, model-making, character analysis we can explore intangible and hidden aspects of the system. In developing our primer exhibition, we agreed that we should; employ abstract, perhaps uncomfortable techniques, develop dynamic, interactive and engaging models and create an experience (stimulating various senses i.e. touch, sight) for a user, filling the user’s periphery. As a result of the primer exhibition it was acknowledged that the information presented at a 1:1 scale was the most effective and engaging.

FIELD TRIP

Coventry --> Turin --> Milan

Coventry

Turin

In Coventry we investigated the themes we had discussed in the studio that were at play in the city centre. It was interesting to note the focus of the city around the universities, with large areas of student accommodation already built, currently under construction and with plans to build more.

Milan

30

31

A source of focus and interest to our studio was Coventry’s ‘double’ cathedral with the bombed original set side by side with Basil Spence’s new. This unification celebrating the old and coupling with the new was important to our discussion of reusing and repurposing existing and new buildings. Looking at entry points to the site, juxtaposition of old and new materials, composition of space and elements.

32

33

FIELD TRIP - TURIN

In Turin we also visited repurposed and regenerated buildings. The original Fiat factory and testing track is now being used as a shopping centre. We were also introduced to the ‘Auditorium La Serra’ in Ivrea that has been home to a hotel, a cinema and now a gym. This site visit was interesting as we saw how the space has been adapted over time and the influence of Japanese metabolism on theories of inhabitation and space.

34

Similar to Coventry’s history Turin was a huge manufacturer of cars. Visiting the car exhibition showroom which has become derelict and used by squatters was important in seeing how easily a beautifully crafted structure with many previous occupants and purposes had become ‘wasted space’ and unused.

35

FIELD TRIP - MILAN

In Milan the studio visited the Prada Foundation. Again, this was another example of reworking and repurposing space, originally a distillery in the 1910s it has been adapted by Rem Koolhaas and OMA. As OMA states on their website, “two conditions coexist: preservation and the creation of a new architecture which, although separate, confront each other in a state of permanent interaction.”

36

From afar we were able to view the Bosco Verticale, a pair or residential towers with a new format of architectural biodiversity that also acts as a ‘green curtain’.

Globally, one of the most pressing challenges is the changing climate, it affects everyone everyday therefore is important for buildings to be design with this in mind. As a result, the system of a circular economy interested me. How can it be used from a top down approach as the responsibility of the architect coupled with a bottom up approach by educating individuals/ the public on alternate sources/ purposes of day to day items, routines and rituals.

MAPPING

1880s

1910s

Site Four has been chosen due to its location close to Coventry’s main market. There are many car and pedestrian routes circulating through the area. Tourists and city visitors have to pass by the site from the nearby station in order to reach the main shops and cathedral.

1930s

In mapping Coventry it was important to understand the history and locality of the site, with the site originally a military barracks till the 1930s when it became a market. Coventry is famous for its automotive industry, being part of a key cluster for car manufacturing, being dubbed as the ‘British Detroit’, with its subsequent decline in the 1980s.

The famous ring road is one of the earliest in the UK and was built with the idea of regenerating the city centre after much was destroyed during the second World War. This generated an influx of cars encouraging Coventry’s city centre to be filled with car parks. This, along with the lack of greenery and parks in the city centre made the aim of introducing more green spaces and reducing the number of cars a key factor in my project.

This drawing focuses on the threshold of the site and the ‘moment of arrival’. It identifies the transition from external to internal spaces and the main components that exhibit the factors for change on the site. It encourages the viewer to understand the key elements that they would interact with on-site such as the cooking school, an environment that will educate all ages on the importance of healthy eating and food waste. A Restaurant, focusing on farm to table produce. Allotments, including hydroponics, encourage locals to grow and understand their own produce. Market stalls supporting local, grass root businesses. And,importantly how all this and the urban environment around them relates to recycling, reuse and upcycling schemes which encourage and educate the importance of these processes in the 21st century.

REALISATION + SYNTHESIS

The ‘Exchange’ Designing for future existence must be reliant on strategies implemented now. Buildings must be designed to be adaptable and not only fit with the needs of the times but be ready for re-use and adaption in the future, rather than as transient structures that will eventually become obsolete and be replaced wholesale by something completely new. When, as we are all currently experiencing, life is restricted to the home or we are quarantined to a limited occupation zone, the importance of self-sufficiency and sustainability, both personally and in wider society, is crucial. Throughout Stage 3 (2019-2020) I have begun to understand how our climate, sustainable living and design and a more holistic and circular and less linear view of building use must now be developed. I have therefore found the practice of a circular economy a driving force in the planning blueprint for future city development. 48

One component of repositioning the waste system is the re-imagining of space for disposing of waste. Most public and residential spaces throw rubbish ‘out back’, creating unappealing and uninhabitable spaces. By changing how we view waste we can begin to celebrate waste and its uses and remodel and repurpose these ‘dingy’ spaces.

Process photographs; if I were to repeat this project I would have made a stronger mould, left the concrete to dry out longer and to have worked with a greater range of materials, such as brick and aluminium, that may have been found on site. Experimenting with the relief and shuttering to create more tactile experiences.

56

By looking at adaptive reuse projects I wanted to experiment in my model with new and old/weathered materials and look at the juxtaposition between the two. I have used concrete, glass (and perspex) and wood as these materials are the most common on my site in Coventry. My concrete models had not cured when the moulds were taken off, and have broken slightly. Yet, this adds to the patina and wear that I want to celebrate in my design. There are multiple fragments of glass that I have added to the ĘťnewĘź features of my model, showing how materials do not have to be disposed of but can be reused and upcycled to create new forms and finishes. 57

Coventry layering mapping in the style of Rem Koolhaas’ layered mapping. From the composite studio mapping exercise in Primer, I wanted to map Site Four in more detail. Specifically, in relation to my line of enquiry and looking at the wider area with the ring road. Although mapping can be an assessment of pure judgement of data collected it also allows us to factor the thoughts for change and challenge the systems in place defining a new desired future. Circular economy- A circular economy is an alternative to a traditional linear economy (make, use, dispose) in which we keep resources in use for as long as possible, extract the maximum value from them whilst in use, then recover and regenerate products and materials at the end of each service life. Kurt Schwitters can be considered an assemblage artist and his collages an interpretation of the mapping of memories and interrelationships. Schwitters is renowned for his seemingly eclectic collection of ‘found materials’. However, the poignancy of his work, centring around the compilation of what may be considered as assembled waste, is reciting a narrative with each

58

Assemblage Theory (in relation to Virtual Diagrams)- An ensemble in which components have been correctly matched together possesses properties that its components do not have.

5

The masterplan relates not only to Site Four but to wider Coventry. It is a masterplan that seeks a re-evaluation of lifestyles and is placed to change people’s relationship with the city, circular economy and life cycles. There are many cyclical interchangeable structures in the new urban centre; where produce is grown, sold, used and waste from the site and surrounding area is brought to the Biomass unit for energy generation. Waste in allotments can also be sold as fertiliser to local farmers.

Notation- Notations are “abstract machines” capable of producing new configurations out of given materials.’ Notations always describe a work that is yet to be realised’. ‘Notations go beyond the visible to engage the invisible aspects of architecture. ASSEMBLAGE This piece maps and analyses the route and circulation of flows and interlinking systems proposed for the site, which is indicated by the intersection of the dashed lines. The piece also takes reference from Grayson Perry’s mode of interpretation of his work which is a representation of the life events, experiences and emotions of the artist. I have added some key references and a J.G. Ballard quote from Kingdom Come as a representation of the site. The mapping drawing also includes reference to the rock formations on the site and is a key notational technique used in the work of CJ Lim. 60

One important feature developed at an early stage of my project was the idea of repurposing the car parks. Coventry has plans to reduce the number of cars in the city centre which will result in many empty car parks. These huge concrete shells all over Coventry’s city centre are ideal for being repurposed, rather than demolished and including introducing larger amounts of green spaces into Coventry. These diagrams highlight only the car parks on Site Four and the opportunity for the development of the site in five to twenty years’ time.

61

MASTERPLAN DEVELOPMENT

Challenging the Miesian idea of ‘wiping the slate clean’ I have looked at how we can replan the area by utilising the fragments of the historic city and retain the recognised pedestrian routes, connections and infrastructure that currently bind the urban fabric together.

62

Site analysis helped in developing the masterplan and focus on the elements to draw upon. The location in relation to main modes of transport and areas of tourism, the noise level as a result of the high car level, and subsequentially the vast number of car parks. By analysing and understanding these aspects, levels and spaces we can begin to develop the massing for the site.

The idea of place and memory is a key factor that stiches the existing to the new by retaining the recognisable principal urban massing and layout of the area with new buildings that reuse the material from the previous buildings onsite. These buildings can, in due course, be ‘de-constructed’ and new buildings with new uses adopted under the same circular economy principles. This framework allows that vitally important visual and embedded personal connection from generation to generation of place, which, over time, establishes the recognisable character of urban centres.

Within the restaurant building there are four technical elements to the development and reuse; the removal and repurposing of existing site construction material, the utilisation of the existing structure, the construction of the new ‘pods’ and the environmental operation of the building (See also page 76 Deconstruction - Construction - Deconstruction sequence). The future must always be considered in new architecture. When developing my site the idea of deconstruction and reconstruction was considered and important aspect of the cyclical nature of the whole site. ‘The Exchange’ has been designed so that the whole site is adaptable, therefore if the purpose of the site were to change, the structure and buildings could change along with it.

POD DESIGN

The Pods are cantilevered steel frames that sit within the original concrete frame. As the pods are elemental in nature preformed sections and panels can be made off site and fitted onto/into the building on site

TECH REPORT

83

THE‘EXCHANGE’

The project aims to provide a masterplan for development within an area of Coventry that has seen a marked decline in prosperity over the past 50 years. The masterplan sets out a model framework for the introduction of a ‘circular economy’ into the wider society and the celebration of food, recycling, repurposing and re-use of food waste and food waste products into the centre of self-sufficient and sustainable Coventry. To solve the climate crisis, we need to develop long term inspirational, sustainable and regenerative solutions to critical urban issues that can be readily understood, appreciated and assimilated by locals and residents. How can we de-couple growth from emissions and look at and use ‘waste’ as a source and resource and then design and build sustainable buildings without having to compromise on design inspiration, quality or price?

84

‘The Exchange’ seeks to become a pioneer master plan that can be extended citywide over time with a design that incentivises sustainable living and a circular economy throughout Coventry and becomes the planning blueprint for all future city development.

HOPE STEBBING

In this workshop we were taught how to make plaster casts. Through our experiments we were able to see how changes in composition of the mix altered the final result. As well we worked with different materials (masking tape, gauze, clay and foamboard) to see the inverted relief and patterns, of the material, once the plaster was removed from the cast.

‘FUTURE FABRICS/ FUTURE FOSSILS’ WITH

HOLLY HENDRY

“LADIES RACK” In this workshop we paired up to convert ‘found’ unused household objects and recreate them for a new purpose, ‘future’. My partner’s studio project was focused on a womens shelter and mine of waste disposal, so we combined these themes to create a drying rack for ladies undergarments from what was previously a coat stand.

‘COOKING WITH CONCRETE’ WITH

RUSS COLEMAN

In this workshop we were asked to ‘cook’ with concrete, comparing casting concrete to baking. We experimented adding recycled aggregates and agents to the concrete to create a variety of effects when taken out the cast. Understanding how this concrete was constructed helped me in my design work in forming that my new concrete onsite could be made from recycled aggregate from this previous on- site structures.
