Title: Reweaving urban fabric in times of urban decay: rethinking the post-industrial city Sub-title: The production of space and the role of historical memory in rearticulating Coventry's cultural nodes Description:
Key Concepts: Building Utopia; Socioeconomic and Cultural sustainability; Recolonising ‘public space’; Systematic design; End of history; Alienation; Living the city; Coproduction of space; Politics of space; Incrementality; Local and regional integration.
The FAB is a self-sustainable metabolism recolonizing Coventry’s decaying Highstreet by means of systematic design and an incremental coproduction of space.
It aims to retrieve the connection between systems of manufacture and consumption, creating a meaningful connection between Coventry’s dislocated cultural nodes.
It integrates a polyfunctional programme bringing systems of micro agriculture, reuse of waste from the High Street, Entrepreneurship, Craftsmanship and Material Testing, developing an autarchic self-sustainable and symbiotic system, feeding from, and back into the city, aiming to revitalise it in a sustainable way: culturally, economically and environmentally.
It looks into aspects like the reintegration of craftsmanship as a vehicle for a contextsensitive cultural production; UCD and the grassroot production of space; Utopia in Architecture, as a process and not as a goal; a critique of modernist top-down planning, and the integration with Local and regional industries.
