Cruddas Park Housing Ziyad Hasanin Building on a new manifesto for making housing differently, my project was to create a new housing development primarily aimed at creating a safe, social space. The site, in Elswick, Newcastle, consists of a concrete, monolithic shopping centre with a 23-storey modernistic residential tower, a green space and brown land to the south, and 5 residential towers. The site currently suffers from lack of program and activity and neglect of human scale. Interacting our new housing manifesto with the site, I built my project on 5 main themes: Human scale, pedestrianism, preservation, connection, and sense of community. The project follows a hierarchy that fosters connection among the residents in the form of a community centre, playground, and park in the middle of the green space as well as connecting the site with the wider neighbourhood via retrofitting the centre as an outlet and plaza offering localized amenities for residents. I have retrofitted the tower and shopping centre, changed their internal layout and extended the tower to provide new and suitable spaces for different demographics and programs on site. The hierarchy of the buildings ensure a meaningful public space, and new pedestrian-only paths connect the different nodes of the site and provide safe and car-free space for child play and walking. New dwellings are designed to passivhaus standard and for maximum utilization of space and a sense of connection with the daily life; the dwellings are placed in a layout that provides social opportunities to the residents. It’s not just a home, but a community.
