DESIGN PROCESS
SERIES OF SHAPE SKETCHES
ONE TO TWELVE Shown in this series of diagrams are sketches from attempts to shape the building on the site using the constraints previously set out. Going from an organic form to an orthagonal one while trying to create intimate paths through the building in between the volumes.

DESIGN PROCESS RESULT
THE FINAL SHAPE After many sketches and modelling, the final result for the shape of the building is shown in this diagram. The alley south of the building was used as a geometrical “beam” that leads to the performers entrance followed by the window overlooking the crossing between London Road and Easter Road where the London Road Church of Scotland is standing.
ABBEYHILL THEATRE HAGOB MANOUKIAN
The geometry from the neighbouring buildings (the triangle shaped one in the west and the square shaped one in the east) was extended to create the curved entrance. This was also used to align the auditorium box at the same angle.

THE PROGRAM HIERARCHY
THE THREE PARTS This is a general overview of the three main parts of the theatre. The left volume is both narrow and lower in shape to show a secondary role in the hierarchy of the building. This is where the café/bar is located (front of house) the narrow shape gives the impression of “pushing” the visitors into the primary part next to it.

The primary part, which is the middle volume, where the auditorium is located, is the heart of the building, setting it at the top of the hierarchy. The third part on the right is the performers area (back of house) which gives it a secondary role. This volume is triangular in shape to give the similar “push” into the auditorium, where the stage is set.

THE JOURNEY FLOW
ORGANIC MOVEMENT One of the main inspirations brought from the studies of The Lyric Theatre is the organic flow through the different levels of the building. The journey upwards through the building makes it an adventurous complex. The different bridges overlooking the entrance foyers makes the visitor curious on how to get up there. That journey is translated into Abbeyhill Theatre while still keeping the constructive continuity of stereotomy. Also here, the visitors curiosity is activated as the mezzanine in the performers area overlooks the northern entrance.

THE KOLUMBA™ BRICK HORIZONTALITY
ORGANIC MOVEMENT The horizontal direction of the brickwork is to keep the flowing direction of Montrose Terrace in the southern elevation. The stacking method for brickwork is to symbolize the teamwork aspect of theatre production as the use of multiple bricks together is what creates a wall. The varying textures and shades give the raw yet complex expression that elevates the character of the light that is seeking its way into the building.

THE HISTORY HOMAGE
OLD AND NEW Seeing as the site was occupied by a petrol station, the smooth “inand-out” curvature of the station was kept as an homage. This also creates a canopy in the entrance where the visitors experience the scale in the height of the ceiling . An opening is placed so that the morning sun illuminates the inside wall.
The hallway underneath the entrance is illuminated through slits between each pillar.
