BABY PEOPLE Tim Onga Commission

This painting is a collaboration between three young artists and community artist Tim Onga. Devised over several sessions at Baby People about protest and demonstrations. The artists identified two specific items that symbolised their approach to protests. Young people often use their mobile phones to sign online petitions on issues that are importance to them. They also discussed the idea of being faceless, especially in the eyes of the law, when taking a stand for their beliefs so a balaclava was chosen as a symbol that best represented this. After each discussion the artists drew and developed their ideas using different techniques including painting, collage and blotted line printing. Using colour was essential to take away from the stark and brutal notion of the balaclava. Once the final images were chosen, they were put together to form one large composition. The text hidden in the background of the painting are from placards from various protests over the past 50 years. Tim Onga then created the composition on the wall of the exhibition, using spray paint, often associated with protest.
