Tools of Protest PROTEST BADGES
MADELEINA KAY
These badges were collected and designed during my time campaigning for the European Union between 2016 and 2020. My activism was motivated by a sense of injustice at the loss of rights for young Brits by losing their EU citizenship – but also in response to the concerning rise of populism globally. The badges I designed emphasised the value of EU membership (which we ultimately lost) and positive imagery about the EU, whilst others stood against nationalist leaders such as Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, Theresa May and Nigel Farage, using humour and satire to ridicule them.
PETER ZABULIS
I first got involved in CND in about 1980 and soon found myself as the treasurer of the Nottingham branch, as well as keeping an eye on the finances, I was also involved in fund raising, organising local demonstrations/actions and arranging transport to national events. The biggest local event held every year, was the Peace Festival and this has now morphed into the Green Festival – it’s good to see that’s still going. The main reason I got involved was the escalation in the nuclear arms race and the proposal to site cruise missiles here in the UK, the world suddenly seemed a much more dangerous place. I’ve always been involved in trade unions so it seemed a natural step to help out CND. I was further inspired by a talk from the legendary historian EP Thompson at Broadway. I think I was involved for about 5 years but I’m still a member of both CND and Greenpeace.
