CHARLIE BARRATT REGENERATING CRUDDAS PARK We are currently in a climate crisis, as well as being in a housing crisis. In order for these crises to be overcome, each architect must address them in every project, including in this project. Therefore, I used these two crises as drivers behind my whole scheme. Aiming to create architecture which is sensitive to the environment on a global level, whilst also enhancing local ecology. But also aiming to solve the local housing issues found at Cruddas Park by providing a higher standard of social housing which is flexible and user friendly. It is this flexibility which will enable the stability and sustainability of these redesigned homes. Looking at the world today, we find ourselves at the centre of a global pandemic. Having focused on a high-rise apartment block for the entirety of this project, I am well informed of the consequences of lock down on the inhabitants of Cruddas Park. As the global situation developed, providing private mature gardens for each resident became more important and further embedded realism throughout my project. Though the issues confronted in this project are specific to Cruddas Park, they are mirrored across the country as high-rise social housing built around the 1960’s continue to fall behind and fail to reflect modern day expectations and ideologies. Resolving their issues is instrumental in solving the current housing crisis. With Cruddas Park it was important to celebrate it as the local monument that it is, whilst ultimately aiming to prolong the life of Cruddas Park and prevent eventual complete demolition.
