It is always fascinating to travel the world, to explore different cultures and to see how other people live. The popularity of any destination is further enhanced by its culinary landscape and the adventure of discovering new places to eat, places where you can enjoy everything from authentic street food to exclusive fine dining, especially when experienced within a backdrop of a beguiling local culture and the mystique of traditional roots. Food and culture are two of the most important ingredients for any holiday these days and are the themes of this edition of Tropical Life. Our ‘Five Best’ will fire your imagination with some great ideas and some incredible places steeped in heritage, destinations that are guaranteed to make your holiday very memorable and well worth the visit. There was a time when Bali was a simple place of warungs and homestays. Times have changed dramatically over the years, and Bali has become an international traveller’s playground, a food destination in its own right and home to an abundance of epicurean dining delights with an ever evolving selection of exciting, high quality cuisine. We take a look at some of the finest offerings such as Bvlgari IL Ristorante – Luca Fantin, La Cevicheria Ubud, the quixotic KILN Restaurant and the intriguing Mrs. Sippy Seminyak.

BALI, INDONESIA Bali’s earliest inhabitants have been traced back as far as 2000 BC, but it was Indian and Chinese influences along with Hinduism in the 1st century AD that created the lasting cultural milieu that is so iconic of Bali today. Despite their extensive adjustment to tourism the Balinese have managed to maintain their age-old culture for the last 1,000 years, and their colourful religious ceremonies and processions have become major tourist attractions. One of Bali’s most popular cultural sites is the Tanah Lot Temple that sits on a large rock just off the coast in the Tabanan regency. Founded in the 16th century by Dang Hyang Nirartha to appease the sea gods, this temple is one of Bali’s largest tourist draw cards. Tidal erosion has meant that access is restricted to local deities, however, the site and the remarkable spectacle of its amazing sunsets leave an unforgettable experience. Perched on a cliff top overlooking the Indian Ocean, Pura Luhur Uluwatu is considered an architectural wonder. Built in large part of black coral rock the temple is one of the 8 Kahyangan Jagat holy temples that are spread across the island. From here one can get a magnificent view of the South Western peninsula of Bali. TropicaLife.net

YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA Indonesia’s special region of art and culture, Yogyakarta is the capitol of education, fine art, music, drama, ballet and poetry which flourish here along with ancient architectural sites and historical buildings. Yogyakarta is the home of the region’s ‘Keraton’ or royal palace. Built by a Portuguese architect in the mid 18th century as a recreation and defensive centre with swimming pools and relaxation rooms for the Sultanate of Yogyakarta, it has become renowned as the Taman Sari Water Castle. This was the place the royal family took refuge in when under threat by their enemies. Nowadays tourists and locals alike can visit to stroll through the palace’s lovely gardens. Another of the most visited sites in this region is the 9th century Temple of Borobudur, the largest Mahayana Buddhist Temple in the world. Built by King Samaratungga of the Wangsa Dynasty in 824 AD the temple has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The spectacular edifice of Borobudur lies between the Sumbing and Merapi volcanoes, and it is highly recommended to scale a volcano reaching the top before sunrise for the breath-taking view as the sun comes up.

SIEM REAP, CAMBODIA Located in North Western Cambodia, Siem Reap is where the famous Angkor Archaeological Park is located. Home to the world famous temple ruins of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayon and many others, the park has been designated as a UNESCO Heritage Site attracting million of visitors every year. The most compelling feature of Angkor Wat is, of course, the temple itself, built for Khmer King Suriyavarman II in the 12th century as his state temple and capital city and, eventually, his mausoleum. Angkor Wat is Cambodia’s principal attraction for tourists and has become one of the most recognisable landmarks in the world. It is best to visit in the early morning during sunrise or late in the afternoon before sunset. Situated about a kilometre from Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm is one of the most popular temples after Angkor Wat and Bayon. Originally called Rajavihara, Ta Prohm was founded in 1186 AD by King Jayavarman VII as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university, and has been left in much the same condition as it was when it was found. Trees growing out of the ruins in their jungle surroundings create a somewhat magical setting, a sort of “Jungle Jimish” adventure area to excite those that love to explore natural settings. This small UNESCO World Heritage City has a charm of its own as it sits peacefully beneath a temple-topped hill at the confluence of the Mekong and Khan Rivers. Luang Prabang is a city filled with Buddhist temples and monasteries, a happy, bustling place as the locals go about their business, surrounded by charming French colonial buildings and local timber built Lao structures. The most important temple to visit is Wat Xieng Thong or The Temple of the Golden City. The temple includes a monastery and is an important monument to Laos’s religious spirit, royalty and art. Luang Prabang appeals to visitors as a gentle city, and early every morning hundreds of monks leave their monasteries to walk through the streets and collect alms. TropicaLife.net

STARING OUT OF THE WINDOW AND GAZING UPON THE ISLAND AS IT SLOWLY DISAPPEARS FROM MY SIGHT, I WHISPERED SOFTLY, “I’LL BE BACK.” GLANCING UP AT MY WIFE, I COULD SEE HER SHARING THE SAME SENTIMENTS AS ME. F
or this trip, I was in Okinawa island for three weeks. This is my third time visiting Japan, having been to Nagoya, Tokyo, and Hokkaido a few years back.
The Battle of Okinawa during World War II may be the first thing that some people recall whenever Okinawa is mentioned. This battle lasted for 82 days and the island was placed under American ruling after World War II until May 15, 1972, it was reverted back to Japanese ruling. Today, Okinawa is one of the leading resort destinations in Japan, visited by both domestic and international travelers.
I was in Okinawa for two reasons: to participate in the Strongman All Japan Triathlon – one of the most established triathlons in the world; and to embark on a new photography project exploring the longevity of the people living in Okinawa – where it is rumoured to be the island where people have the longest lifespan in the world. Prior to the triathlon, I had an unfortunate turn of events and had sustained an injury during one of my training sessions. I was advised by the doctor to stay away from any sports for a period of time and after weighing the consequences, I made the difficult decision to withdraw from the triathlon.

Picking myself up from where I left off, I tried to focus my energy into the other passion in my life – the photography project. While researching for interesting subjects for this project, I read about people in Okinawa having long lifespans and leading a healthy life. That intrigued me and I wanted to capture the essence of life in my project to showcase it to the world via photographs and interview snippets. My focus for this project is on taking portrait shots of the elderly people and their hands. Why hands? This is because each hand is unique in its own ways, the wrinkles that run across the hands tell a different story of life but the same story of resilience and experience. For the first few days in Okinawa, my wife and I stayed in Naha, the capital city of Okinawa Prefecture, the southernmost prefecture of Japan. During the Battle of Okinawa, Naha suffered extensive damage from the fighting and the entire city centre had to be rebuilt. Today, the restored and rebuilt Shuri Castle, the former royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom, is one of the finest Okinawan castle and is one of the most important historical sites in Naha. Bidding adieu to Naha for the time being, our next stop was at Nago, a city located at the northern part of Okinawa Island. Our next stop is to Taketomi Island to the south of Ishigaki Island. To reach Ishigaki Island, we need to take a plane from
Naha so we went back to Naha and had a 3 days 2 nights stay at RIHGA Royal Gran Okinawa, where one can overlook Naha City and enjoy an unobstructed view of the sky. Taketomi Island requires quite a bit of effort to get there – an hour’s plane journey from Naha to Ishigaki Island followed by a 50-minute bus ride from Ishigaki airport to the ferry terminal and a 10-minute ferry ride from the ferry terminal to Taketomi Island. For all the effort put in to reach Taketomi Island, it is well worth it. Taketomi is known for its “traditional Okinawan” houses, stone walls, and sandy streets, making it popular with tourists. One can relax at the beach, go snorkeling, take an oxcart ride through the village, or simply walking/biking around the island while enjoying the quaintness of the village and the natural scenery the island has to offer. Our 3 days 2 nights stay in Taketomi Island was taken care of by the luxurious HOSHINAYA Taketomi Island Resort. After we have checked-in, we were given a tour of the resort and was then shown our unit. We had afternoon tea at the Yuntaku Lounge in the resort and were treated to a live traditional music performance by a local artiste using the Sanshin – Okinawan traditional three strings music instrument – accompanied by aromatic coffee and biscuits. We ended the day with a scrumptious dinner at the resort’s restaurant with a Nouvelle French cuisine, à la Okinawa – HOSHINAYA Taketomi Island Resort’s novel take on French cuisine by putting a twist on local dishes that feature ingredients found on the islands.

dinner, we took a shuttle service to Nishi Pier to watch the sun set over the clear blue sea as the soft glowing light emanated from the twilight, blurring the horizon that divides the sky and the sea.
The next morning was off to a great start with breakfast and a beautiful view of the pool. The pool is heated 24/7 so you can jump right in whenever you want and enjoy a breathtaking view of the blue sky during the day or a sky full of stars at night. The rest of the morning was spent snorkeling and diving at one of the spots. The water was crystal clear, abundant with coral reefs, and I could see the rich aquatic life under its transparent veil. To be able to swim alongside various species of fishes and other aquatic animals is a wondrous experience that everyone should go through at least once. We embarked on an exploration of the Taketomi Island in the early afternoon and participated in the Taketomi Minsa Weaving Experience Workshop back at the resort, a craft that has been passed down for generations. In this 2-hour workshop, we were taught to weave using a foot pedal loom, a part of the history of Taketomi Island. The workshop was conducted by a lady who also manages the place – she has been doing it her entire life – and supported by two staff who helped out in the day-to-day operations and assisted in the weaving workshop. The machinery used there for weaving are mostly made of wood, adding a touch of traditionalism in this otherwise modern world. Living the time of our lives is an ode to trying out new experiences so we decided to have our dinner back in our room. Here is the catch: BBQ in our room. Yes, you heard right, yum yum in my tum tum! After the belly delicious

The next day, we were up before dawn to catch the early morning sunrise. The beauty of it would forever be etched into our hearts as we embraced the reality of being on that island for the last day. We were so enthralled by the weaving workshop that we spent the last day back there, taking videos and photographs to document the special moment we have had and to show our love for traditional craftworks. Visitors to Takatomi Island would be thrilled to know that there are three major beaches on Taketomi Island, namely the Kondoi Beach, Aiyaru Beach, and Kaiji Beach. Each of those three beaches has its own personality and feel but all of them offer captivating deep blue skies and welcoming silence perfect for an afternoon of personal reflection. Three weeks in Okinawa has made me appreciate life on a deeper level. We always take things for granted, want things in an instant, but good things come to those who wait. Ask yourself how many times have you slowed down your pace in life to just appreciate the beauty of nature or how fleeting twilight truly is? Staring out of the window and gazing upon the island as it slowly disappears from my sight, I whispered softly, “I’ll be back.” There is an end to everything, to good things as well. This may be the end of my trip but it is just the beginning of a sub-chapter in my life.

The island can be reached by sailing from the Labuan Bajo’s wooden harbour of Kampung Ujung, either by speedboat if you want to get there quickly or, if you would like a more leisurely pace, by wooden boat. The trip across to the island can be a magnificent experience in itself. In the lea of Flores gentle waves splash the boat and flocks of white seagulls playfully chase one another as you slowly approach the shoreline. Surrounded by Seraya Besar Island and the gallant Bukit Batu Gosok hill, Seraya Kecil looks like a small child resting peacefully in the warm caress of its mother. The island has been hosting visiting travellers since early 2000. Back then, the only accommodation was a single bungalow with 20 rooms. Over time, as more and more tourists have discovered the island, a lot more tourist related infrastructure has been developed to cater for their needs.

angkok is one of the world’s greatest cities for street food and, as soon as you arrive and start exploring, you’ll quickly discover that there’s an abundance of delicious things to savour literally everywhere you look. Along the roadsides, expect to smell the aroma of stir frying chillies, garlic, and basil mixed with the thick, humid air of Bangkok’s tropical climate. When you are spoilt with so much choice, it is impossible to try everything Bangkok has to offer in the short span of a holiday trip, but we’ll try to give you a basic guide so you’ll know where to start and you can try a good sample. A good place to start is Yaowarat road in Chinatown, where you’ll find a plethora of street food stalls. You’ll never get tired of exploring the congested and chaotic streets of Bangkok’s Chinatown; there’s so much delicious food to try. During the day, you’ll find markets and some food stalls, but street food really comes alive in the evening and through the night. Bowls of piping hot noodles, stir fried dishes over rice, Thai curry and rice, grilled meats, and green papaya salad, are just a few examples of the dishes you’ll find here. More than enough to satisfy your hunger for a day!
The dining scene of Bangkok has stepped up a few notches over the past few years, with an ample selection of Michelin quality non-Thai options that wouldn’t be out of place in such cities as New York, Paris or London. For Thai food, in particular, one of the current best is the Issaya Siamese Club. Run by the country’s celebrity chef Ian Kittichai, Issaya is both authentic and appealing with its vibrant spin of traditional Thai cooking. The venue is an attractive vintage-style villa noted for its elegant ambience and two dishes we recommend are kra dook moo aob (chilli glazed ribs) and yum hua plee (heart of palm and bamboo flower salad).

For those who fancy more of a gastro bar to hangout and chill, we recommend you try the Namsaah Bottling Trust. Housed in a grand early 20th-century villa, it focusses on classic and whimsical cocktails accompanying Asian bar food and larger sharing dishes. The name of the venue pays homage to its colourful history, the house having played numerous roles over the years as a residence of a royal aide-de-camp, a soda company bottling office, and the headquarters building for a bank. The Thai word ‘namsaah’ is an old fashioned word referring to sparkling water or soda water.

AS ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING CULINARY DESTINATIONS ON THE PLANET, BANGKOK HAS EARNED ITS REPUTATION MAINLY FROM ITS EXTENSIVE SELECTION OF DELICIOUS STREET FOOD WITH EVERYTHING FROM THE HUMBLE ‘PAD THAI’ AND ‘SOM TAM’, TO MORE OBSCURE-YETDELECTABLE CREATIONS FROM AROUND THE EXOTIC KINGDOM AND BEYOND. THE VARIETY IS BREATHTAKING AND, WHILE IT CAN BE OVERWHELMING FOR THE CASUAL VISITOR, IT IS HEAVEN ON EARTH FOR LOVERS OF GOOD FOOD.

rom traditional Cantonese fare to English high tea, Hong Kong has it all. From the most commonplace to the downright bizarre, you just have to keep your eyes (and your internet browser) peeled to find that hidden delicacy that lurks in every corner of its streets and districts. Hong Kong has more ‘one-of-a-kind’ dining options than you can possibly count; from the atmospheric cha chaan teng restaurants reminiscent of Westernstyle diners to outdoor dai pai dong hawker stalls, so popular with budgetaware and hearty fare travellers alike. For late night snacks, stroll along the flashing-neon night markets to discover a whole new world of incredible cuisines; from deep-fried rings of tender squid sprayed with sweet vinegar, whole roasted chopped pigeon with white
pepper and all manner of grilled meats and seafood. If you are looking for something a little more international, Hong Kong will tease you to stop-by at one of its hip restaurants and chic cafes. In the Sheung Wan and Soho districts, you can find fashionable haunts of choice for Hong Kong gourmets; organic juice shops, subterranean speakeasystyle cocktail lounges and pour-over coffee shops are in no short supply, with choices of cuisine ranging from Italian, Thai, Japanese and French to name just a few. In recent years, numerous celebrity chefs have established restaurants in Hong Kong which boast outposts from Nobu Matsuhisa, Gordon Ramsay, Alain Ducasse and Jamie Oliver no less. One of the city’s finest prove of that said aspect is Spring Moon; a Michelinstarred Cantonese restaurant on The Peninsula Hotels Hong Kong; presenting fine Chinese cuisine in its purest form. Specialities include an array of seafood, superlative dim sum and the restaurant’s acclaimed XO sauce made to a secret recipe. Or, for a more ‘local tounge’ approach, Mott32 is one of the most raved modern Chinese restaurant in the city. Balinese people express their rich traditional culture in a myriad of fascinating ways, and Perang Pandan is one of the manliest of their annual traditional rituals.
- Photo by Gus Dharma -
A
lso referred to locally as ‘mekare-kare’ or ‘megeret pandan’, Perang Pandan is a mass coming-of-age ritual dedicated to Indra, the Hindu god of war and sky. All the male villagers take part fighting each other in friendly duels, armed with a small rattan shield in one hand and a tied bunch of thorny ‘pandan’ leaves in the other.
The women take part but only as spectators. Their role is to look exotically appealing draped in Balinese traditional costume and makeup, and to distract their foes while cheering on their friends, lovers and male family members fighting for their honour in this noble and ‘manly’ ritual battle. Every year the Perang Pandan ritual is held around the month of July by the people of Ngusaba, Tenganan Dauh Tukad traditional village, about 78 kilometres northeast of Denpasar. The festival is open to the public, which means that anyone can not only watch but take part as long as they follow the rules. Don’t be surprised if you see foreigners in the arena with the locals. Although none of the participants hold back their ‘punches’, this festival, strangely, is more about having ‘fun’ than being violent or gory. After the fight is over, the combatants apologise to their opponents and tend each other’s wounds using turmeric and traditional medicine.

A MOMENT IS ETERNAL:
THE PHOTOGRAPHY ACCORDING OF KADEK PUJA ASTAWA
Born in Singaraja, Kadek Puja Astawa has always been captivated by the beauty and timelessness of still images and this fascination has lead him to immerse himself in the world of photography and to capture the precious moments he sees through his lens.
P
uja Astawa reminds us that photography allows us to go back and enjoy the precious moments that occur through our lives. Every detail of those precious moments can be captured and brought back to us, a glimpse in time with all its feeling and atmosphere. Puja Astawa considers himself an ‘all-rounder,’ a photographer who is both willing and able to adapt to the demands of many different types of photography, though he feels that human interest and landscape are his favourite fields. He knows that every person has a different body language and their own natural traits and, if paired with well-conceived lighting, can yield unique and captivating images as a form of visual art. Landscapes are a very different matter simply because it is technically challenging to get a good landscape shot. A photographer must be able to quickly adjust to changing conditions in real time manually adapting his settings to follow the unpredictabilities of light and nature. Unlike many avid photographers who have moved over to the latest mirrorless cameras, Puja Astawa stays loyal to his Digital SLR (Single Lens Reflex) equipment; he loves to view his subjects and frame his pictures directly through the lens. He prefers to get the result he wants using the ‘natural process’; a direct interaction between him and his camera.
