187 Ninth Aveue New York, NY 10011 212 627 1144

The name Organic Table is one of the city’s few upscale, all-vegan haute cuisine restaurants. The meatless, dairy-free menu focuses on seasonal ingredients and everything--including the beer and wine--is 100 percent organic. The eclectic offerings span a dizzying ethnic range of Indian, Mexican, Thai, and Italian flavors, including a burrito and “burger” for lunch and handmade pumpkin gnocchi, seitan cutlets and tofu fra diablo for dinner. Warm wood tones and spartan decor means the food takes center stage.

As you speed through the dark subway tunnels, try to look beyond the reflections and into the caverns which sometimes stretch out from the tunnel. See anything? We’re not talking about alligators flushed down the toilet, but real people who live underground in the nooks and crannies of the subway system.

INTRODUCTION

These are the Mole People, made famous by journalist Jennifer Toth, who in 1993 wrote a book describing their plight. The mole people, who by some estimates number 5,000, are considered by New York’s homeless population the most dangerous and unstable of its numbers. They have chosen to live in the countless uncharted crannies of the city’s underground tunnel networks, especially those labyrinths which emanate from Riverside Park, Grand Central Terminal, Penn Station, and Port Authority.

Hooking up to wires for electricity has been easy, and the city’s discards provide all the material comforts they need: beds, rugs, lamps, paintings, even pets.

Police sweeps through the small encampments try to force the subway dwellers into accepting social services, but many resist: At least in their tunnel spaces, they can set up a relatively permanent home, and even avoid much of the crime that homeless people on the outside suffer. To the mole people, the tunnels underneath New York aren’t much, but they are home.

Only running water is lacking, and so the mole people are encrusted in dirt and grime, blackened and blending in with the darkness. Sometimes, a mole person is killed by a train, or touches the electric third rail--that’s when their head, feet, and hands explode.

In this city of eight million-plus people, there are certain rules by which we must abide in order to preserve our sanity. Take the subway for instance, those mobile zoos of human exhibition. The unofficial MTA code of conduct states that one must not maintain unnecessary eye contact (lest you unwittingly imply you’re in need of a new dance partner); one must not peruse another passenger’s reading material, even if it features naked people; one must not graze elbows or any other body parts; and one must not converse with other riders (particularly not about their aforementioned lurid reading material). But one man has found a way to quietly connect with his fellow New Yorkers, bypassing convention without breaking any rules.

A woman watches as a participant rides the train in the annual “No Pants Subway Ride” in New York January 13, 2008. The event is run by the group Improv Everywhere, and is intended to make people laugh and have an interesting New York experience

Why were we doing this? What was the point? My friend Matt and I were asked those questions many times in the weeks before our trip. Our friends, though, were enthusiastic. “What a great idea,” they said. “Take the most frustrating, boring and uncomfortable part of your day, and do it for a whole weekend” But that’s not the attitude you need to undertake something as harebrained as this. You must avoid asking whether, in light of

Take a musical journey from South Ferry at the foot of Manhattan to 125th Street in Harlem, and savor a wide variety of music at subway stops along the way. With appropriate sound accompaniments for each station, music genres include original soul, rhythm and blues, jazz, acoustic rock, pop, and a Chinese classical orchestra. The CD includes performances by Sayyd Abdul Al-Khabyyr, Didjworks, Bruce Edwards, and Little Joe. A good choice for bringing a little of the city home with you, and a perfect souvenir or gift for former New Yorkers.

Everyone has a part to play in the subway. The essential actors are the readers. They serve the crucial function of being engrossed in something. This allows the other riders to stare at them without much fear of being caught at voyeurism. Without the readers, you have an uncomfortable group of people pretending they don’t want to stare at one another. The readers also give those nearby something to read. At one point six of us craned our necks to read a woman’s Spanish magazine article rating the macho factor, as

The trip officially began at Union Square at 8:12 a.m. Saturday. The track on the Lexington Ave. stop at this station curves so much that moving sections were constructed to span the 18-inch gap between platform and train. I read that this curve, built to placate certain property owners, killed a man once. Conductors stick their heads out the window to make sure no one is stuck in the door anywhere on the train. But the curve puts parts of the platform out of sight. The unfortunate man was stuck partway in a door and slammed into the wall at the end of the station.

New York City is alive with music. You hear it on Broadway, at Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, and in the subways! SUBPLAY is the first CD to go underground, capturing the raw sound and emotion of NYC’s diversely talented subway musicians. Roger Ridley’s soulful voice, Sayyd’s sultry saxophone, Kathleen Mock’s angelic brand of folk/rock, and seven others will have you running to the subways screaming for an encore!

We got aboard fine and rode to Grand Central, where we transferred to the Times Square shuttle. Already I needed a bathroom. Twenty years ago, there were more than 900 toilets in the system. Then the Transit Authority closed more than 800 of them. We got off the 1 train at 110th to find a bathroom. The idea of riding to every stop witout ever leaving the system has panache, but we decided early on that it wasn’t worth it. We bought unlimited-ride MetroCards and forewent the style points.

His work evokes that haunting feeling of loneliness in crowds. The majority of Long’s sketches are of isolated individuals, candid moments of oblivion or reflection. When he does draw multiple figures, they are often unrelated, either unaware of the other’s presence or just indifferent to the crush of humanity around them.

And somehow this isolation feels more natural than direct interaction. Though the formal signs of an artistic education are present in Long’s drawings, they also possess a casual, unstilted quality something lacking in today’s high tech world of super polished imagery. We live in a state of immediacy, where fleeting moments can quickly be captured with a cam era phone and disseminated online. But Long says his ustaged portraits are more personal than a snapshot, “I can look back on my subject and remember very specific details about how they were moving, whether they were nervous …

Our route was drawn up by a group of enthusiastic transit planners who are designing the resurrected 2nd Ave. line. Voters approved a $500 million bond for this project in 1951, then in the 1970s the federal government was prepared to pay 15 percent of the cost. Both times, work was scrapped as money was diverted first to other improvements, then to transit operations because Mayor Beame did not want to preside over a fare increase. I wish the money were spent to keep bathrooms open.

I wish the money were spent to keep bathrooms open. At 3 a.m. I absolutely had to go, so we exited at 36th St. and 4th Ave. in Brooklyn. McDonald’s wouldn’t let us in. Burger King was closed. The gas station attendant was sympathetic. My need was not the kind that could be satisfied in a dark alcove. Things appeared hopeless. But down the street we saw a single light among the gated storefront. It was a hole-in-the-wall Cuban joint. Only four people were inside and it wasn’t entirely clear the place was open for business. A man and woman were busy controlling an exuberant drunk. The drunk cornered me, but I couldn’t understand his slurred words. Finally one of the other men interceded and distracted the drunk long enough for me to get to the bathroom. Behind the bar was the reason the place seemed in such disarray the immense proprietress was passed out on the floor. At 8:30 a.m., 24 hours into the trip, we greeted the crisp new day atop a hill at Inwood Park. The next 12 hours were a blur. Marathoners tell me the miles between about 16 and 22 are the worst. The thrill is gone, but there is no turning back.

Dreams have been here as long as mankind. Back in the Roman Era, striking and significant dreams were submitted to the Senate for analysis and interpretation. One such hypothesis for sleep-related rhythms is that they are the brain’s way of disconnecting the cortex from sensory input. When we are asleep, thalamic neurons prevent penetration of sensory information upward to the cortex. This gives the cortex a bit of a rest and explains why people who suffer sleep deprivation suffer a loss of critical thinking abilities and are prone to poor judgment. Another hypothesis is that dreaming plays a role in memory processing, especially with emotional memories. During REMsleep, the amygdalate, which play a role in the formation and consolidation of memories of emotional experiences, are quite active. A related theory is that dreams are “watchdogs of the psyche” (Baker). Dreams are mechanisms that inform and guide our feelings

Typically, a person will have four or five REM periods a night, ranging from 5 to 45 minutes each in duration. There is some evidence, however, that REM-sleep evolved before dreaming and that the two are independent of one another. The REM-dream state is a neurologically and physiologically active state. When a person is in deep sleep there is no dreaming and the waves (called delta waves) come at high amplitude about 3 per second. In REM-sleep, the waves come at a rate of about 60-70 per second and the brain generates about five times as much electricity as when awake. Blood pressure, heart rate, breathing rate, etc. can change dramatically during REM-sleep. Since there is generally no external physical cause of these states, the stimuli must be internal, i.e., in the brain, or external and non-physical. The latter explanation--that dreams are a gateway to a paranormal or supernatural realm--seems to be largely without merit, although it is very ancient. Each of the

COOM 2008

A dream is mental activity (thoughts, images, emotions)occurringduring sleep. Most dreams occur in conjunction with rapid eyemovements; hence, they are said to occur during REM-sleep, a period typically taking up 20-25% of sleep time. Infants are believed to dream during about 50% of their sleep time. Dreams occurring during non-REM periods are said to occur during NREM-sleep

S

Sleep researchers divide up sleep time into stages, mainly defined by the electrical activity of cortical neurons represented as brain waves by an electroencephalograph (EEG). The EEG records electrical activity in the brain by connecting surface electrodes to the scalp. The stages of sleep occur in sequence and then go backward to stage 1 and REM-sleep about 90 minutes later. This cycle recurs throughout the night with the REM period typically getting longer at each recurrence. Typically, a person will have four or five REM periods a night, ranging from 5 to 45 minutes each in duration. There is some evidence, however, that REM-sleep evolved before dreaming and that the two are independent of one another.

Physiologically speaking, researchers found that during dreaming REM sleep, males experience erections and females experience increased vaginal blood flow - no matter what the content of the dream. In fact, “wet dreams” may not necessarily coincide with overtly sexual dream content.

One such hypothesis for sleep-related rhythms is that they are the brain’s way of disconnecting the cortex from sensory input. The prophetic or clairvoyant dream is perhaps the strongest reason for believing that dreaming is a gateway to another world. Some dreams seem uncanny. They seem to foretell events. If a significant number of dreams of just a single person corresponded to future events, this would be a great benefit to humankind and we should try to find out what mechanism is at work here. However, no such person has yet been found. Individual dreams that occasionally seem clairvoyant provide very weak evidence for clairvoyant dreams. I once had a very vivid dream of an airplane crashing nose first in San Diego (where I lived for 20 years). About ten years after the dream an airliner went down in San Diego. Am I clairvoyant? Would the case be stronger for clairvoyance if the airliner went down the day after I had my dream? I don’t think so.

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?

W

While it is admitted by most parapsychologists that some amount of coincidence is to be expected between what a person dreams and what actually happens, it is argued that there are too many cases of seemingly prophetic dreams to reasonably explain them all away as due to coincidence. It is true that not all prophetic dreams can be explained away as being due to coincidence. Most of them probably should be so understood, but many of them may be explained away as due to filling in memories of dreams after the facts and many others should be explained away as cases of lying. But the vast majority of prophetic dreams are probably coincidences. Such dreams are impressive to those who lack understanding of the law of truly large numbers, confirmation bias, and how memory works. If the odds are a million to one that any given dream is truly prophetic, then, given the number of people on earth and the average number of dreams people have during each sleep period (250 dream themes a night, according to Hines, p. 50), we should expect that every single day of our lives there There are some people, however, who have experienced much more horrible things than I have, who dream about them every single night of their lives (Sacks). Why the brain should terrify its owner by repeating horrifying memories during sleep seems beyond comprehension. Such obsessive dreaming is of no more value than obsessive-compulsive behavior. Such people don’t just have nightmares; they are too terrified to go to sleep. They need the help of a good therapist, but they are not in need of dream interpreter. If such dreamers are to be helped they must learn to control their dreams. There are various method used to control dreaming, most of them involving visual or auditory preparations prior to sleep. Some therapists claim

shelf, hooked up “Miss Z” to an EEG machine and put her to bed. She claims that even though she didn’t read the number on the shelf, she flew around the room the first few nights. She didn’t get the number right until the fourth night. Skeptics think either Tart is making up the story or it took the girl four nights to figure out how to trick the scientist. (See Tart’s ‘A Psychophysiological Study of Out-of-the-Body Experiences in a Selected Subject,’ Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research, 1968, 62, pp. 3-27.) Others have investigated the question of whether the mind is open to telepathic input during sleep and have failed to find evidence of psychic ability while dreaming. Scientific research by psychiatrist Montague Ullman and parapsychologist Charles Honorton in the early 1970s at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, obtained chance results after an initial testing that looked positive for psi (Baker). It is possible that dreaming may be related to the OBE. In some dreams, the dreamer is an observer, even an observer of himself. Perhaps, the brain mechanism that controls spectator dreams versus first-person dreams is the same mechanism that controls the illusion of leaving one’s body in the OBE.

The word dream stems from the Middle English word, dreme which means “joy” shelf, hooked up “Miss Z” to an EEG machine and put her to bed. She claims that even though she didn’t read the number on the shelf, she flew around the room the first few nights. She didn’t get the number right until the fourth night. place during REM originate internally. Nowadays, hardly anyone believes that dreams are messages from the gods. But some parapsychologists, such as Charles Tart, believe that dreams offer entry into another universe, a paranormal universe of OBEs, cosmic messages, and blissful nirvana. His main evidence for this seems to be his personal faith and an anecdote about his baby sitter. He claims the unnamed baby sitter (he calls her “Miss Z”) had the power to leave her body during sleep. He claims he tested his flying babysitter in his sleep lab at UC Davis after she told him that she “thought everyone went to sleep, woke up in the night, floated up near the ceiling for a while, then went back to sleep.” Other psychologists might have been concerned for the mental well-being of “Miss Z” and the safety of his or her children. Tart was intrigued. He put a number on a shelf, hooked up “Miss Z” to an EEG machine and put her to bed. She claims that even though she didn’t read the number on the shelf, she flew around the room the first few
