ACADEMIC PROJECT 1

Due to the ever-increasing cost of living and the rapid change in corporate culture, artists and musicians have gradually started moving away from the city center in the context of London. The site, the engine house, has given me the right opportunity to bring art and music back into Central London. Being right across the proposed site for the new Museum of London, the actual site has easy accessibility and scope for cultural use. It opens up doors for art and culture back into the concrete jungle. The center is composed of a recording studio, a live performance space, a music library/hub, and a multi-leveled cafe. The purpose of this center is to provide starving, talented musicians with the proper equipment and facilities to communicate their unique music. Hopefully, the center will allow new musicians the ability to express their creative ideas without the pressure of selling out to make money or the pressure of being judged for not being perfect. This center is allowing the artist a chance to keep their music honest and real. Individual expression is encouraged here to provide these services to a large number of artists.

Through a rigorous design process, I was able to work on creating a new typology for an existing Grade 2 listed building in London, which expanded my understanding of various concepts and principles. The design proposal draws a contrast between the old and the new, light and shadow, and transparency. The tiny piece of land is surrounded by tall buildings, which bring light only from the south at certain times of the day. To create a dialogue between the old Engine House and the new proposal, I have drawn inspiration from parts of the old building. Textures and tones that resonate with the material of the old building have been translated into the new. Amber glass represents the red bricks, and the steel framework is a representation of the various lines running across the building. I have used corten steel and mesh predominantly in different areas, especially in the staircase, to create shadows that create these patterns and tell a different story at different times of the day.

Xenakis once stated that concert hall designers should seek inspiration in the fine art of instrument building. The form of an acoustic instrument not only has a fundamental impact on the quality of the sound, but it also determines its timbre and thus its identity. I have drawn inspiration from an acoustic guitar to design the performance space. The acoustic cylinders above the stage are inspired by the guitar pegs which play a very vital role in the instrument. For the acoustic panels, I made an oragami panel which was later given shape using 3d software.

TRASH TO TREASURE REUSE | REPAIR | REPURPOSE We live in a world where everything is ever-changing at full steam. Especially in a city like London, in the middle of all the hustling, clatter, beauty, and pandemonium, our focus is shifted to a place that has been frozen in time. It stands still in all its beauty and rich history. A place from a moment when life was extremely different.

ACADEMIC PROJECT 2

Bringing this site back to life from the standpoint of circular economy, yet maintaining the aspect of what a vital role this power station had for its time has given me the opportunity to focus on making “TRASH INTO TREASURE” and adding more threads to the Wapping tapestry. Like fast fashion in the textile industry, fast fashion in the furniture industry is a constant concern to our planet. The intention of “TRASH INTO TREASURE” is to create a hub to reuse, repair, recycle and upcycle wood and wooden furniture, and exhibit them for sale. The wood workshop will be a place for people from all walks of life to explore the craft of woodworking/ carpentry and learn a skill or two. And, while you’re either learning the art or buying a new piece of unique furniture why not enjoy a cup of coffee from the in-house roaster?

Through a rigorous design process I arrived at a concept for my main space. My exhibition design is inspired by Ron Gilad, who is a conceptual furniture designer. His work blurs the line between furniture and art, appearing to be simple black line drawings. Gilad’s sculptural objects bring graphic outlines to life and play with perspective, perplexing the viewer’s desire to find meaning in their structure. While some pieces, such as the tables with glass and metal surfaces, are explicitly designed for functional purposes, others are whimsical but intelligent abstractions of space in an area defined by the designer.

PLAN - GROUND LEVEL

Using the artist’s concept of bringing line drawings to life as inspiration, I have created a layout with frames that can even illuminate light during the night. These frames are made of timber and embedded with LED strips that make them glow at night. This perspective also gives the user a feeling of walking through different spaces, but in reality, they are moving within the same large boiler room which has been segregated into smaller bits with the help of the timber framework. The concept of room within a room is the key here. This entire framework is supportive of the concept of reusing, repairing, and repurposing wood.
