Specialist Mathematics

English Literature and Media is an alternative to English for Academic Purposes. It is designed for students with more advanced English. Entry is usually by selection or by special application. This subject suits students who enjoy independent reading. As well as Media themes, the emphasis is on the reading and discussion of works of literature, including a novel, short stories, a play, poetry, and film as text.

Mathematical Studies is designed for students intending to study university programs in physical or mathematical science, computing, engineering, surveying, economics, finance or commerce, humanities and social sciences.

This subject aims to develop an understanding of some of the key ideas of physics, the characteristics of physics and the ways in which physicists ask questions about nature. Students develop an understanding of how the concepts of physics are used in selected applications and learn to evaluate physics related information and data.

The study of psychology aims to describe and explain human behaviour. It does this through the scientific and systematic study of mental processes and behaviour; the processes that underlie it and the factors that influence it. Through the study of psychology, students can come to better understand themselves and their social worlds. Psychology also aims to predict and modify or change mental processes or behaviour for the betterment of individuals and societies.

Students undertaking a study of Specialist Mathematics will study Mathematical Studies concurrently. Specialist Mathematics is recommended for students intending to study science, computing or engineering based university subjects. This subject develops the skills and ideas of mathematical studies as well as exploring some additional concepts.

The study of English Literature & Media develops the skills and knowledge necessary for students to use language appropriately for a wide variety of purposes, and to engage with mass media in a responsible, critical fashion. College Facilities & Location

If you require assistance with this, we have experienced Student Services staff who will take care of your accommodation requirements by helping you find a place to live which best suits your personal needs.

The College's main campus is within the University of Adelaide precinct. This campus is located in a modern, spacious building offering classrooms, student lounge, study areas, staff offices, computer suites and a student kitchen. Computers at the College are exclusively for Bradford College students' use. They have automatic access to both Bradford College facilities and the University of Adelaide's resources including the library, email, internet, student intranet and connection to the University of Adelaide's wireless facility.

A range of different forms of accommodation are available including: • Student hostels • Homestay • Private rental. Students under 18 years of age must live in accommodation approved by Bradford College. This usually means homestay, an approved student hostel or with a blood relative over the age of 21.

Health Cover It is a condition of an Australian student visa that students obtain Overseas Student Health Cover. This currently costs A$385* per year. Bradford College is located in central Adelaide so there are several good health centres and hospitals with medical practitioners close by. Bradford College will ensure that you are introduced to one of these clinics if the need arises. *Subject to change without notice.

Accommodation Bradford College provides a personalised accommodation placement service. Your choice for accommodation in Adelaide consists of homestay, student hostels, university accommodation and independent rental.

33

Accommodation

Homestay Homestay is the arrangement whereby you stay with a family in their home, living and eating with them. Homestay is therefore your opportunity to have a uniquely Australian experience. As Australia is a multicultural country, homestay can be an opportunity to understand different cultures so that you will develop an appreciation for other ways of living.

Full board homestay accommodation (generally priced at $220 per week) includes:* • A single room with bed, desk and cupboard • Laundry facilities • Three meals per day. Part board homestay accommodation (generally priced at $130 per week) includes:*

The homestay experience is ideal for developing English language skills and assists with your adjustment to Australia by providing a family atmosphere bridging you into Australian society.

• A single room with bed, desk and cupboard • Laundry facilities • Access to the kitchen, where you can do your own cooking.

Homestay can also be an enriching experience where lifelong relationships and friendships are formed, thus adding tremendous value to your overseas study experience. You will be staying with an Australian family who will treat you as part of the family, with the use of living areas and facilities. However, you are expected to fit in with the family’s lifestyle and meals and follow their house rules. Please be aware that you are required to compromise with other family members, help around the house and show respect for others at all times.

In part board homestay, students must buy and prepare their own food as meals are not provided. All Bradford College homestay providers offer wireless broadband internet which is available at a small, extra cost. *Please note, homestay fees do not include telephone calls or personal toiletries. Students should budget approximately $12,000 - $14,000 per year for living costs in Adelaide. Bradford College does not enter into a contract with either the student or the homestay family, but simply acts as the facilitator for the homestay placement. Bradford College takes extreme care when matching homestay families and students, but can take no responsibility once a placement has been accepted by both the homestay family and the student. Please note you are required to stay with your homestay family for a minimum of four weeks unless there are extenuating circumstances.

34

University Accommodation Accommodation is also available to students at the University of Adelaide Village. Applications should be made directly to the University online via www.adelaide.edu.au/accommodation. You will be required to commit to one full year and pay 12 months rent in advance.

Independent Rental Accommodation Independent rental accommodation (including shared house accommodation) is an option only open to students over the age of 18. Students will need to find their own property. This option provides you with more independence, privacy and freedom than other forms of accommodation and costs approximately $5,000 - $10,000 per year plus four weeks rent for bond. The cost of independent rental does not include meals and other living expenses. Included in the rent is the cost of repairs, but not electricity, gas, internet, telephone connection and usage or water usage. You will have to do all the housework yourself, including buying food and general household duties, preparing meals, keeping the house clean, doing your own laundry, etc. You will be required to sign a lease of at least six months (and sometimes 12 months), pay a bond of four weeks rent, and provide references. Another consideration is that rental accommodation in Adelaide is often unfurnished or part-furnished, which means that you may also have the expense of buying some of your own furniture. Fortunately, there are many secondhand furniture shops in Adelaide, which offer good furniture at reasonable prices.

The facilities at Bradford College are really good, everything is very convenient. Diana Mo Li

Diana graduated from the Foundation Studies program in December 2007. She is now studying the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Adelaide.

Shared Housing Accommodation This entails living with other students in a house or apartment. After paying weekly rent, you must also pay for usage of gas, electricity, telephone and internet. Students must find this type of accommodation after they arrive in Adelaide.

35

Student Hostels A wide range of student hostels are located around the city and suburbs. Student hostels offer independence within a student environment where it is easy to make friends. Usually these consist of a fully furnished bed/study room, with access to shared kitchens, bathrooms and other facilities. For an additional fee, meals can also be provided in some hostels.

The teachers were excellent and inspired me to reach my goals. Their constant encouragement assisted me in every way possible to fit into the Australian way of study. Shane Liu

Shane graduated from the Foundation Studies program in December 2008. She is now studying the Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours) at the Universty of Adelaide.

The price varies depending on the type of room you require ranging from $120 per week for a single room with no private facilities up to $240 per week for a single room with all meals included. You must contact Bradford College’s Accommodation Manager to secure your student hostel accommodation. If you require more details regarding these hostels, please visit their websites or contact Bradford College for assistance. Always request a written contract with the hostel to protect your rights and be aware of your entitlement to be given a copy of the rules and regulations that are adopted and enforced by the hostel.

Under 18 Student Accommodation Options The only accommodation options available for Under 18 year old students are: • Homestay • Bradford Lodge • Living with a blood relative (can only be a parent or sibling who is over the age of 21 and who has been visited by and approved by the College). All accommodation for under 18's must be arranged and overseen by the College Accommodation Manager and Student Welfare Manager. This must be completed before the under 18 year old student arrives in Australia.

Accommodation Booking Process Please note that accommodation will only be arranged and booked for a student once they have accepted their offer and enrolled in the College.
