Geared Up! I’m Bored! There’s Nothing to Do We all know how much time youngsters spend on their computers, chatting to friends on Facebook, playing the latest games or just browsing the internet, it seems their whole lives are on-line. But there is so much to do that doesn’t involve microchips and computer screens. So switch off their laptops and get the whole family out into the fresh air to have fun and enjoy Burnley’s great outdoors. 5V^ PZ [OL [PTL [V [Y` ZVTL[OPUN UL^ [V NL[ Ä[ HUK enjoy some healthy outdoor fun. Learn to play golf or pitch and putt with the family, dust off the kids skateboards and take them to Queen’s Park skatepark, get on your bike and experience the many routes and trails around the area or just step out along the waymarked walks to see how beautiful our countryside really is.

As a very rural area Burnley is a super place to explore by bike and with over £2m invested in new cycle facilities and many new routes opening up over the last few years, it has never been easier to get around. Burnley is now amongst some of the best areas in the North of England to cycle in.

Burnley & Padiham Greenways The Greenways are pleasant and quiet off road routes which connect Burnley and Padiham town centres to the countryside around. Padiham Greenway - the route follows the old Padiham Loop Railway. There’s easy access to many local attractions including Lowerhouse Lodge Nature Reserve with it’s varied wildlife and facilities for the RLLU ÄZOLYTHU River Calder Greenway - this route takes you over the River Calder via Ightenhill Bridge - an idyllic spot deep in the countryside - then along Grove Lane past the’ Trail of Words’ and into Padiham town centre. Brun Valley Greenway - From Central Railway Station follow the Brun Valley Greenway through parks and wooded river valleys to Rowley Lake and Briercliffe Sweetclough Greenway - Due to open in 2011 the Sweetclough Greenway goes through Habergham to Lowerhouse Lodges.

Straight Down the Middle Everyone has to start somewhere, even Lee Westwood was a beginner once, and his success has to be inspirational for anyone wanting to learn to play golf. Towneley Park has three golf courses an 18-hole and a 9-hole par 3 course and an 18-hole pitch and putt ideal for the kids to compete against the grow-ups. Mountain Bike Trail

Learn to Ride

Watch out for details of a new mountain bike trail in the woodlands near to Hurstwood village. The trail will provide thrill seekers with a dedicated facility in an area where they were already improvising their own routes. The specially designed route will go through the woodlands by Hurstwood reservoir and down towards the village and is part of the plans to transform Worsthorne Moor into an oasis for ramblers, mountain bikers and birdlife.

The purpose built cycle track in Queen’s Park was designed so that children to can learn to ride a bike in a safe environment away from the roads HUK [YHMÄJ ;OL [YHJR PZ H YLHS YVHK layout with crossings, signs and road markings just like the real thing, but without the danger. For children under 12 years old it is the best place to learn how to be a good cyclist, get used to how roads work and to have fun.

Cycling into Railway History This new circular route is a greenway which goes around the outskirts of Padiham via the old Padiham Loop Railway Line. Said to be the most expensive line built by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway its construction gave the company the opportunity to tap into the heavy cotton trade in Padiham and coal from numerous pits around the line.

It is hard work being a house maid, but it is so beautiful up here in Lancashire and such a change from London that even though I miss my family I love my job. Gawthorpe Hall is quite an old house and very grand compared to where I come from. We have an early start, I have to be up and working by 6am there is so much that needs cleaning and sorting, even when the family is in town the house has to be kept in tip-top condition in case they pop home at short notice. We have to keep out of sight most of the time so we use the back stairs to get around the house from the kitchens, it keeps you fit having to run up and down the spiral staircase all day. The housekeeper keeps us on our toes and makes sure that we maintain her high standards. While the family are still asleep we start by cleaning the main rooms on the first floor, the Dining Room is beautiful and very cosy with a large fireplace which keeps the room lovely and warm in the colder months and there is a minstrel’s gallery which is used by performers to keep the family and their guests entertained. There are always lots of visitors coming to dinner and some famous guests too, I would have loved to have been here when Charlotte Bronte came

to stay, I’ve never read any of her books but I know she was very famous and Mrs Fairfax, the housekeeper says that she has read ‘Jane Eyre’ and really enjoyed it. The Drawing Room is also on the first floor and I always feel a bit dizzy when I clean in here, it’s the wooden panels, they don’t look quite straight and make the room seem lopsided and I have to say that Lady Shuttleworth’s new fancy coloured glass

chandeliers from Italy are not really right in that room, but there is nowhere else for them to go and she likes them very much, so we just clean them and keep quiet. Once the family are up I can go upstairs to the bedrooms to make the beds and tidy the rooms. My least favourite job though is emptying the bath it’s not so bad taking up the clean hot water, but taking the dirty water down the back stairs is not something I would choose to do. But as I don’t have a choice, it gets done and I might as well smile about it. I like the Long Gallery on the top floor, its where the ladies take a walk if the weather is too cold or wet to go out in, but it is the portraits on the walls that I really like, all the costumes, hairstyles and faces from years and years ago seem to bring the past to life and you can see some of the features of our family in the portraits, it makes me proud to work here. We don’t get a lot of spare time, but we walk up to church on Sunday through the beautiful grounds by the River Calder – did you know that they actually moved the river after Gawthorpe Hall was built because they didn’t like it so near, isn’t that something. The countryside around here is lovely and on my half day off a month I like to go for a walk to explore the area. I think I will stay around here all my life it’s my home now too.
