PROFILE OVERVIEW
S
I am a MArch graduate with eight months experience working within an acclaimed Manchester based Architecture firm looking to complete my experience and undertake part III. The wide range of projects covered in both my parts I and II, and the practical year in training have allowed me to develop a depth of experience in numerous fields of architecture. Motivated by a desire to create a scheme that forges material and metaphysical links with the surrounding context, I design using a combination of sketching, model making and technology when required to deliver a successful outcome. It is the potential of balancing aesthetic intention with practical application that drives my projects forward, but it is the interest of details of structures and the technology behind construction that originally fashioned my passion in architecture.

EXHIBITIONS, COMPETITIONS AND PUBLICATIONS WINNERS: [not] The Oxford Road Corridor 21.06.2012 Worked along side partners from Camlins Landscape Architects and Stockleys Consulting Engineers. “With map in hand, to explore Oxford Road from Whitworth Park to the Museum of Manchester is to see it for the first time, not as a “corridor” but a series of interconnected rooms, some internal with roofs, some external beneath the sky and the stars. Rooms for scholarship and learning, rooms for experimentation or hypothesis; rooms for worship or to take food and drink; rooms for performance, play or relaxation; rooms for healing and motherhood. When placed within a painted map, a mosaic of places emerge, some of which already exist while others have yet to reveal themselves.” The resulting scheme was shown in the Architects Journal. My work has also been exhibited and published by the Manchester School of Architecture, the RIBA hub at the Cube Gallery and the Continuity in Architecture blog
TECHNICAL SKILLS Over the course of my architectural education, I have built up a range of skills on computer packages as well as practical skills in designing. I have a high level of competency in: AutoCAD [PC and MAC] PhotoShop In-Design SketchUp Kerkythea (rendering) Microsoft Office Packages

WORK EXPERIENCE Mere Lane Healthcare Centre, Liverpool, ÂŁ6 million I was heavily involved with the BREEAM excellent submission to the environmental consultants which included: Leasing with the ecologists to see what we could implement within the design to achieve the wanted credits. Volumes and specifications of all major building materials, including all types and positions of insulation. Opening area of all windows having to be over 5% of floor area. Highlighting all areas of potential risk of damage and showing all measures that have been taken to reduce damage. HMG Paints and Little Greene Paints, Manchester Architectural Visualisation and Liaison
June - August 2009 July - August 2012
Brought in to help attain the visions of both Manchester based companies. HMG required the design and presentation of a new manufacturing building to house NewGen Coatings, a branch of the company, as well as scheme designs of a possible new factory if they were to move. Little Greene Paints required architectural environmental advice and designs on creating a carbon neutral building within Manchester. Attended several meetings at the City Council about the environmental accreditations that should be achieved.

INTERESTS AND HOBBIES Insight and inspiration comes from external sources and experiences. Here are a few things that intrest me outside of architecture: Sport:
I have played rugby from an early age actively participating at club, school and university level, winning several trophies including one representing my club at an international tournament. I also enjoy playing golf and tennis in the summer, and am a keen fisherman and enjoy canoeing and boating. Interests: For several years I have helped with logistics and performance of firework displays with the family run business Brimstone Pyrotechnics. During the four year period I worked at the Cinnamon club, I played the bass guitar, and played and performed with several bands. Working and playing with experienced musicians allowed me to develop and expand my experience and ability giving me the opportunity to teach several younger bassists through the local jazz club that was affiliated to the building where I worked.

THE INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE MUSEUM OF PRESTON 5th Year Studio Project Duration: 2011-2012 Location: St Johns Ward Preston
MICHAEL JAMES JOLLEY
Bridging the Ginnel Forging new links between historical and contemporary
The rich historical influences that shaped the context of post-industrial Preston, as well as the desperate need for re-appropriation within the urban fabric allowed an exploration of my interest in the historical grain of cityscapes and the relationship between public-space and built environment that emerges in the contemporary environment from this. Through the introduction of the Industrial Heritage Museum of Preston, I attempted to re-introduce a public realm that was so significant through the Industrial Revolution. By both preserving the original integrity of the relationship between streetscape and building mass, yet introducing contemporary structures that utilise and enhance the surrounding redbrick context, I wanted to create a new layer of architectural archaeology that becomes part of the historical story of Preston, rather than simply erasing and disregarding the original context. THE COMMUNITY HUB OF THE GIUDECCA 6th Year Studio Project Duration: 2012-2013 Location: The Giudecca Venice
MICHAEL JAMES JOLLEY
Creating a New Axis Emphasising the Central Axis of the Cinema, While Allowing Views of the Lagoon Beyond
Through analysis and reinterpretation of the archetypal Venetian social centre, the Campo, my scheme looks to introduce a community hub that facilitates the remembrance of such urban landmarks in an environment that lacks them due to the spatial development and historical uses of the Island of the Giudecca. By aesthetically merging the vernaculars and combining the fragmented social networks that are present on site, the Giudeccan Community Hub creates a core for the island – a place that represents the original ideas embedded in Venetian community whilst endowing the Campo with a new expression of Giudeccan identity.
