aias promotionals This poster series, developed over the course of two semesters as the promotions officer for Texas A&M’s AIAS chapter. Originally started to explore vintage methods of advertising and design in the fall of 2011, the series evolved into the development of a template for the rapid reproduction of content through similar meeting graphics and a grid-based text layout.

In addition to the regular posters required for each meeting, desk drops and other promotional materials were designed to draw underclassmen and non-members to each of the meetings. These included the aforementioned promotional flyers for desks, conceptual business cards, and bookmarks for new officers and incoming freshmen.

typographic portrait Utilizing copy from Frederick’s 101 Things I Learned in Architecture School I constructed a self-portrait with typographic characters as the primary form of mark-making. Variations in light and shadow coupled with the distorted scale of letterforms create the illusion of three-dimensional space. The sentences, for the most part, are intentionally legible; a simpler method of stacked letterforms was avoided to preserve clarity for the observer.
social justice week
12
Social Justice Week is an annual event designed to raise A&M University students’ awareness of social justice in local, national, and global communities. This year, the university tasked students with the creation of promotional materials for the 2012 event. This particular design illustrates the magnitude of human trafficking by quantifying the total using marks and relating it to something the audience is familiar with: the average nine-to-five work day.
BEFORE THE NINE TO FIVE WORKDAY IS OVER
ILLEGAL HUMAN TRAFFICKING
WILL BE SENT INTO SLAVERY BY

typographic journey To further experiment with the relationship of typographic elements as they exist simultaneously in a single composition, the journey to campus is illustrated utilizing hierarchical text, weights, and a radial grid. The radial form is representative of a clock face; the times serve as the inevitable frame against which the morning’s events must take place. The events themselves loosely follow the grid, reflecting their lack of conformity to the rigid structure of the time.

identity From a professional point of view the logo or “mark is the symbol by which a business is immediately identified. As part of a general re-branding for my public image, I experimented with the strict geometric nature of the Futura to form a mark that related to my preference for clean geometry in graphics and architecture. By exploiting the nature of letterform I created several prototypical marks exploring negative space and simplified graphic forms.

lecture series promotionals During the spring of 2012 our team at the Agency developed several proposals to increase the number of students attending the lecture series. This proposal was targeted to the students dining in the architecture building’s cafe. Using bright colors and the latest in pop-up technology (the signs would be folded in the center; the hand is suspended vertically above the sign) we created a series of signs to encourage participation in the college’s lecture program.
WHILE I WAS AWAY...

castiglion fiorentino An early flight out of Houston, an ocean, and twenty hours later I found myself in paradise. The ItalArt institute was nestled in the Tuscan hills and exuded an air of the traditional quiet Italian town. The organic nature of Castiglion’s organization created, as if of its own free will, an incredible layering effect that can be seen from coffee shops, cathedrals, and stalwart castle walls. This medieval fortressed town was my home for four months.
28
arezzo While abroad I sought to capture something beyond the appearance of the destination: the atmosphere. I arrived in Italy during Arezzo’s annual Giostra del Saracino, the historic reenactment of military training exercises adapted into games of chivalry. Shoulder-to-shoulder with fervent Italian students, these photos document the passion of the cross-town rivalries between the various districts that comprise Arezzo.
30
rome This is a city rife with monuments to old gods, old kings, and time itself. The architecture itself stands defiant to age, wear, and use, reminding us that once men were gods and blood was shed for ideologies and glory. The Vatican, the Colosseo, and the Spanish Steps draw both tourists and pilgrims to marvel at the beauty and monumentality of these feats of architectural brilliance. The spaces draw reverence from the lips of visitors, as all great architecture does.
32
florence At the artistic heart of Italy is Florence, a city brimming with monuments to culture. The roof-top views of the city have a graphic quality to them, as if the city itself is rising from its foundations as it sees fit; roads create a tangled web that interconnects these organic city blocks. Artists can be found in alleys and outside shops, creating works in the shadow of great buildings and towering neighborhoods. Even so, moments of quiet may be found secluded in the city.
34
cinque terre With a quick dose of spontaneity I found myself in Cinque Terre, the famous five towns along the western coast of Italy. Expanding on the organic town theme that has been so prevalent in Italy, these small villages formed cliffs of pastel civilization thrusting from forested coastlines. Despite isolation, the towns are home to practicing artists, one of whom was involving the local school children in creating crowd-sourced sand art from acrylic and local sands.
36
venice Following the organic logic of Italian cities, Venice replaces streets with canals and cars with boats. The beauty can be deceptive, as rampant pollution and rising sea levels threaten the structural stability both famous architectural monuments and pedestrian residential housing. Despite these concerns, the 2009 Venice Biennale was held with famous architects and designers representing innovative thinking throughout individual nations’ pavilions.
38
berlin October found me in Berlin. In a whirlwind of sight-seeing it became evident that the post-Cold War era had reshaped the city into something unrecognizable from before; East and West embraced history and culture through strong communities and vibrant art and architecture. Street art is celebrated, from the remnants of the Berlin Wall to various murals by local artists. Despite the inclination for publica art, there is a strong reverence for historic and symbolic sites.
40
paris A city not known for its hospitable nature towards outsiders, its expansion was a far cry from the organic nature of the Italian metros that I had grown accustomed to. Despite the hectic urban fabric surrounding the usual tourist traps, moments of solitude were found within the monuments. A reverence similar to that observed in Berlin caused a silence to fall upon the Arc de Triomphe and Louvre; isolation led to selfreflection and environmental intimacy.

home Austin is not globally renowned for its architecture or reverent, historical spaces. It is, however, home to a vibrant culture of artists and musicians. Two separate series have begun here: one focused on local street art with an emphasis on East 5th and 6th Street murals, and a second which examines the rise of local artists through their work as high school and university students.
