“The air quality has improved immensely” “I am writing to inform you of how satisfied I am with the air filter system that your company sold to Duffy’s Bar. The air quality has improved immensely and our clients have mentioned that there is a noticeable difference. Thank you, again.”-Brant Read,Owner, Duffy’s Bar, Quebec “Extremely pleased with the units” “Since we started using the units we have had no problems with airborne interference with culture and have had no positive tests for bacterial contaminates. While we still have minor dust problems (which come from our house air supply) they have been greatly reduced by having the freestanding filtration units in the room (I would estimate about an 80-90% reduction). Overall, we are extremely pleased with the units.” Dr. Sam Prien-Texas Tech University,Texas “Major improvement in the health of the care giving personnel” “When we decided to improve the air quality in our day center, we purchased an air purifier on the advice of personnel at the Lung Association. There was such a major improvement in the health of the care giving personnel as well as the children at the center, the directors decided to buy eight more units (one for each class). We are more than completely satisfied with the results of these purifiers and would highly recommend these units to anyone with children in their charge.” -Suzanne Latreille, Seattle

Sensi Organic SolutionsIn Western-style medicine, the patient generally pays for the care and the remedies that go with it. As the medicinal cannabis industry emerges, dispensaries and other cannabis care providers are developing similar patient-centered revenue models. This works out fine when the patients can afford it, but many cannabis patients cannot. A common phenomenon in states that legalize cannabis for medical purposes is that the programs draw in many citizens who are living at and below the poverty line. One reason may be that in poorer areas there is far less social pressure against using cannabis than there is in upscale neighborhoods. Another reason the less well-off are out in front on the re-discovery of cannabis as medicine is because for people who have no money to spend on doctor visits and pharmacy meds, street weed is often the safest and cheapest medicine they can find. The prospect of legally acquiring this herbal medicine attracts them to the program, but then reality hits; medicinal grade cannabis is expensive, and almost nobody’s giving it away. Patient Empowerment Sensi Organic Solutions (SOS) is a startup non-profit organization based in Narragansett. Their mission is to help financially strapped cannabis patients in the state get the medicine they need. Founder Kyle Capalbo said they were going to do that by helping patients help themselves: “Nearly half of the medical marijuana patients in Rhode Island are on social security. Some have no income at all. We know that there are many patients who have gone through the [state registration] process and have a legal right to use medical marijuana, but they simply can’t afford it… Social security is not providing [medical marijuana] for them, the government isn’t providing it for them, and dispensaries charge what to these low income people feels like an arm and a leg for the medicine…some people choose to stay on their prescribed pain meds just because they are getting them at low or no cost through social security… We have found that for about the cost of two or three ounces [at dispensary prices], patients could get the equipment and enough soil and nutrients to produce at least five times that amount—but that’s a sizable upfront investment even if you’re not broke…and if you are; forget it.
SOS is going to open the door for patients in need by giving them, at no charge, a basic grow kit and some advice...the seeds will also come from donations.” Although cannabis is relatively easy to grow, novices and experienced growers alike can find themselves without medicine for a variety of reasons, including bugs, mold, equipment failure, bad weather, and time between harvests. In those situations, Kyle said he hoped assistance would come from patients and growers in their community— online and eventually all across New England: “When someone is given a benefit, they often feel obliged to give back in a similar way. Our initial work will be to cover the start up costs for new growers and give them some help to get started. To help carry that opportunity forward, we’re building an online community platform to give our friends a place to interact, share and give back. For building face-toface connections we’ll hold festivals, block parties and workshops. Then, if someone is in between grows or for some other reason is out of medicine, there will be patients and growers [in our network] that have been helped in the past by others and who can now step up help someone get through a couple days or a week…” Asked about the dispensary system that drives most state legalization initiatives, Kyle said professional providers were important, but they were not going to be able to serve everyone who needed the medicine: “I am not against dispensaries at all, but they are in the business of selling goods and services directly to patients—meaning to people who are able to pay. The other thing is, this is a new industry and there are a lot of sharks out there who are ripping patients off, like charging crazy prices for average medicine. The fewer financial resources a patient has, the more sense it makes for them to find a way to grow their own… Truth and Reggae Kyle and his team—pretty much his whole family—have a deep connection with the reggae music community all over the world, but especially in Rhode Island and in Jamaica. They have a quaint guest villa down there near the town of Ocho Rios, and they imagined their place becoming a hot spot for vacation summits tailored to the medical marijuana community. In the short term, Kyle said
they planned to attract funding and resources with corporate sponsorships, private donations, seminars and workshops, a clothing line, custom artwork, and of course, reggae music: “The reggae community has always seen this as herbal medicine, and reggae artists have been singing about the medical benefits of marijuana for nearly 50 years…We intend on reaching out to the international reggae community for their support, and there is a plan in the works with VIS Records to produce an annual Reggae for Relief album that we believe is going to gather a lot of support…Reggae musicians have always understood the benefits of marijuana... No one is saying marijuana is right for everyone, but for people it works there is no doubt it enhances their mental and physical lives and drives their creativity and spirituality.” Horticulture and Healing Aside from the medicinal benefits of this flowering herb, cannabis also happens to be an ancient, diverse and fascinating plant that can be tremendously satisfying to grow and utilize as medicine. Kyle said seeing patients with their first harvests reminded him of working in his Dad’s garden: “I was a kid so naturally I didn’t like the weeding and such but when we picked a fresh tomato, washed it off and sliced it up…it wasn’t only the taste, there was such a great sense of accomplishment… Caring for a medical marijuana plant from seed through to harvest is powerfully therapeutic in that it requires time, focus, study and commitment…and like vegetables from the garden, when you do it right there’s an amazing sense of connection and feeling of independence, like wow; I can provide for myself… This is like the parable that says ‘Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime’…we just intend to provide that man with a pole, a lure and a little help! It is truly time for the public to become more aware of the benefits of this miraculous plant. When people realize that marijuana is just not for the bong but can also be utilized in forms such as tinctures, oils, edibles and more, they’ll start to see it for what it is…a low-cost medicine for body, soul and spirit…” -Carl Hedberg

I’m here to talk about one of the most versatile plants known to man. This plant has been cultivated for thousands of years and is woven into the fabric of human history. This plant produces a safe, effective and natural medicine as well as hundreds of nutritious and environmentally friendly products. Believe it or not, this multifaceted plant has been illegal in America since 1937!! The prohibition of this plant hurts patients, farmers, families and the environment. This startling lack of freedom, and that is what we’re here to talk about today, this lack of freedom is ripping apart the foundation of modern society. Does anyone know what plant I’m talking about? That’s right, I’m talking about cannabis sativa. I’m talking about industrial hemp. And yes, I’m talking about marijuana. The scientific name for this plant is cannabis sativa. Sativa is the Latin word for useful. So, we go from calling this plant cannabis sativa or useful, to marijuana, or “devils weed.” Who here hasn’t had a loved one with cancer who’s undergone radiation treatment or chemotherapy? Doctors regularly prescribe very powerful pharmaceuticals with a laundry list of serious side effects that sometimes seem worse than the illness. Many people are realizing that a little puff of cannabis (or a nibble on a cannabis treat) makes them feel better, improves their appetite and helps them sleep. I was at a medical marijuana conference in Maine where state representative Anne Haskell gave an inspirational talk about how her daughter used marijuana to increase her appetite while undergoing chemotherapy. At the same conference, keynote speaker and Multiple Sclerosis sufferer Montel Williams took the stage literally in tears because he was in so much pain. Montel said he needed to smoke some cannabis to reduce his pain but he couldn’t because it was illegal. From the audience, Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion said “Montel, have your medicine.” As Montel took a quick puff, everyone jumped to their feet to applaud both his courage and the bravery of Sheriff Dion. Montel said it immediately reduced the level of pain in his feet from a 7 to a 4. Cannabis helps people reduce their use of powerful and highly addictive pain medications like morphine, Vicodin and
Oxycontin that can really knock you for a loop. Some claim that marijuana is a gateway drug that will put you on the slippery slope to drug abuse. In fact, cannabis is proving to be a gateway drug away from alcohol, a gateway away from tobacco and a gateway away from cocaine, heroin and other debilitating pharmaceuticals. Who isn’t for that? Well, apparently the United States Government, which actively stifles research into the capabilities of cannabis. Cannabis is classified as a Schedule I narcotic which is reserved for drugs that have NO current medical use. This is a travesty and a truly heartless policy. Despite our government’s best efforts, new research into the endocannabinoid system is showing promise in many areas including treating Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, which is important as our society ages. Cannabis is proving effective in treating post traumatic stress disorder which many veterans return from war with. For years, we’ve known that cannabis treats glaucoma and asthma. We’re now finding out that it may also prevent osteoporosis and some types of cancer. Over 60 cannabinoids have been identified in the cannabis plant with each having different therapeutic properties. It is not surprising then, that researchers are calling cannabis a synergistic shotgun because it does so much. Incredibly, no one has ever died from smoking or ingesting too much cannabis. There is no known lethal dose for cannabis, while thousands overdose each year on aspirin, Tylenol and other over-the-counter drugs. And unfortunately, we hear all too often of people literally drinking themselves to death with alcohol. Cannabis is a much safer way to reduce stress or relax after work. You do not have to smoke cannabis to obtain its therapeutic benefits. You can vaporize it, which reduces your exposure to smoke. You can also eat a “medible,” use it as a tincture or apply it topically as a salve. 14 states have medical marijuana laws. In California, Colorado and Oregon, the medical marijuana industry is booming with thousands of registered patients and full service dispensaries. Maine and Rhode Island are also setting up dispensaries and compassionate relief bills are progressing in numerous state. Now you know that cannabis is one of
the safest and most effective medicines known to man. Well guess what? You can also produce a multitude of earthfriendly and healthy products with it. For over 5,000 years, cannabis hemp was literally and figuratively intertwined with human history. The humble hemp seed fed people throughout China, Russia and Europe. Hemp fibers were used to make paper, fabric and cordage. The sails and rope used on the ships that discovered America were made of cannabis hemp. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both grew hemp on their farms, and the great state of New Hampshire’s name is derived from the Olde English word for hemp. Cogitate on that for a minute. In today’s economy, we need something that will create jobs and revitalize rural America. Hemp could be part of the answer by creating self sufficient communities where food, fuel, fiber and building materials are grown and produced locally. If you grow, process, produce and sell products locally, money is spent over and over within the community, creating a multiplier effect. We don’t want to send our money and jobs overseas or across the country. We want to keep our jobs here. Growing hemp can help create a sustainable future. Did you know that you can actually build a house out of hemp? Just take hemp hurds, the inner part of the stalk, and mix them with lime and water, and you get a strong, lightweight, breathable, mold resistant and fireproof concrete. Hemp hurds also make particle board which is stronger and more flexible than wood particle board. Insulate your house with hemp fiber, which is better than that scratchy, itchy pink fiberglass insulation. And you can top it all off with hemp composite shingles. Finish the inside of your house with fashionable hemp/silk curtains and durable hemp carpet. You can even heat your house with hemp! Hempseed oil bio-diesel can be used for your furnace, or hemp hurd fuel pellets can keep your wood burning stove toasty throughout the winter. Hemp bio-diesel can also be used in tractors, boats, snowmobiles, cars and generators. Cellulose rich hemp stalks are a great source of ethanol, so we don’t have to use corn. If all of this isn’t

What nutrients?
I use sunshine mix #4 it works amazing with advanced nutrients. You ask why? I’ll tell you Ph is the most important steps in being a successful grower, and advanced nutrients understands exactly that. they’re coming out with ph perfect products soon, but there pretty damn close now!!
What strains have you grown? i grow white rhino and super silver haze right now, cause they are what works for my patients. i’ve also grown white russian, pink cadillac, nyc diesel and chocolate chunk. I’m not naming all of them because I have been doing this for 15 years and we don’t have all day. LOl.
What are your favorite strains? I only grow strains that i research to get the highest thc level possible; so if you ask for my favorite i might have
to say all of them. everything I grow has the one hit factor, so if it works for my patients it works for me.
tell us about your patient experience. my patient has ms and fibromyalga, I’ve seen her go from hobbling to taking karate classes in a couple of years, her benefits from medical marijuana her doctors have said are amazing. that makes me feel pretty good and her family is thankful they got thier mom back.
what type of lighting? i use hps in my flowering room and t5’s in veg.; i use t5s because my strands have a ten week flowering cycle and using my 600 or 1000 watt medal halide would speed up my veg. to quickly, so using t5’s works for my situation.

In many ways Dave is a typical Rhode Island medical marijuana patient, he has had cancer multiple times, more than one “terminal” diagnosis by doctors, and left for dead by a medical community that refuses to accept the clear benefits of Cannabis as a treatment for some of the most debilitating diseases known to man. Although, once you enter Dave’s humble abode you begin to see he is not at all typical. Dave studies the scientific aspects of Cannabis cultivation, terms like molecule, titrate, and extraction are thrown around with regular conversation as we toured his small one-bedroom apartment. A look at Dave’s ingenious cultivation methods will inspire confidence to grow in even the most seemingly unlikely circumstances. Some Rhode Island medical marijuana patients live in small, subsidized apartments and due to privacy and space issues, they may feel growing medicine to be an intimidating prospect. Not to mention the costs associated with beginning an indoor cannabis garden. Dave has used these limitations to his advantage. Tucked in almost every corner is a cultivation apparatus of some sort. Nothing goes to waste in patient Dave’s garden, every single scrap of plant materiel is used and reused to garner the maximum benefits from his labors. He makes canna-butter, cookies, cannabis vodka, hash, and everything else you can imagine. Dave is a perfect example of what one man can do with a little scientific know-how and some motivation. A look at what he has done in such a confined space should give all of us patients the inspiration to grow our own medicine and medicate safely and naturally.

Rest assured, loyal readers, that even though 1000 Watts is about to ‘go national’ in reach, our coverage will remain focused in the Northeast, especially here in New England--the new hotspot for change and freedom! We’re here to serve our community, and now you can help us with that by making a tax-deductable donation to 1000 Watts. Many thanks to Ann for helping to make this happen!

Maine Moves Forward by Stepping Back by Carl Hedberg New England is being hailed as the new hotspot for advancing the rights of medical marijuana patients, and Maine is one of the most patientfriendly states in the region. In 2009 a citizen’s initiative in the state to legalize medical marijuana passed with nearly 60 percent approval. In the years since, the state legislature took steps to make the law more restrictive and less protective of patient privacy. To restore the intent of original initiative, supporters wrote LD 1296; An Act to Amend the Maine Medical Use of Marijuana Act to Protect Patient Privacy. Sponsored by Rep Deborah Sanderson (R-Chelsea), LD 1296 received unanimous approval in the Health and Human Services Committee and passed through the House and the Senate without debate. The measure reinstates optional registration for patients and some caregrowers, and eliminates the requirement that patients disclose their specific medical condition to the state. The law also puts in place more effective processes for adding approved medical conditions, improves the access procedures for minor patients and prevents municipalities from instituting regulations that are more restrictive than the state law. Importantly, patients, caregrowers and dispensary employees acting
under the law will be protected from arrest, prosecution and discrimination. In June, Maine’s conservative Governor Paul LePage signed the bill, saying, “I am pleased that the Legislature has voted to move the law closer to the initiated bill that was enacted by the voters. I am proud to sign a bill that protects patient privacy and respects the will of the voters.” Charles Wynott, one of the chief architects of the 2009 initiative and this ‘fixer law” as he calls it, is the founder and director of the Maine Medical Marijuana Resource Center (www. asamaine.org). Reached at his home office, he said laws in Maine are going in the right direction but lots of work remains: “This law was passed at the state level (as opposed to a voter initiative), and that shows lawmakers in the state are finally getting it. As patients we know what we need. For example, the state had changed the law to say that the medicine could only be grown in an indoor locked facility. That effectively outlawed outdoor grows, and even though our growing season in Maine is short, there are a lot of [outdoor growers] who depend on that for their medicine… Access to medicine is certainly the most difficult challenge we have here in Maine. We work specifically with low income and terminally ill patients, and we’re always scrambling for money to find ways to get them their medication. It’s difficult to have to say no when they call. For patients willing and able we will set them up with pots, soil, and six plants. We give them as much help as we can but I’m a low income patient myself so it’s hard. We ask for donations but we don’t get a lot… Our biggest funding source is our Expo in April…We’ll be taking over the civic center in Augusta for two days to with live bands and a big party Saturday night… it’s going to be nice.” As far as full legalization goes, Maine lawmakers are not interested in
stepping out that far. In June the full House killed a ‘legalize and regulate’ bill with a 107 to 39 vote. Rep. Michael Celli (R) says that full legalization is a good idea that will have to wait on the federal government: “I wish that we could pass legalization of marijuana, but until the federal government does something, we would only be calling the wolves down on the state of Maine…I just don’t believe the time has come for [full legalization].”

Back in 2004 Vermont created an exemption from criminal penalties for the use and personal cultivation of marijuana to alleviate the symptoms and effects of debilitating medical conditions. That law also created a registry of individuals who are eligible to receive this exemption. This year state lawmakers defied federal authorities and passed SB 17, a measure that initiates the creation of four medical marijuana dispensaries. During the hearings, much of the patient testimony was about gaining better access to the medicine. According to Dan Riffle, a legislative analyst with the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP); “patients told the legislators cont. on page 20

that they were unable to [grow their own, which Vermont allows] due to the high cost of equipment, or because their medical condition made the task too physically demanding.” In May the Vermont House approved the bill in a 99-44 vote—this despite a threatening letter from Vermont’s U.S. Attorney reminding all lawmakers that if they passed SB 17 in defiance of federal law, the Department of Justice would “carefully consider legal remedies against those who facilitate or operate marijuana dispensaries or marijuana distribution or production…” The letter was similar to those received by state officials from U.S. Attorneys in other states where dispensary legislation was being considered. While the threat successfully intimidated the leadership in states like Arizona and Washington, Governor Pete Shumlin (D) had the political courage to sign the bill. With this measure, Vermont becomes the 8th state to explicitly authorize dispensaries to possess, cultivate, manufacture, deliver, transfer, transport, sell, and dispense cannabis, supplies and educational materials to patients that have designated it as their provider. Dispensary operations may cultivate up to 55 immature cannabis plants, 35 mature, and have no more than 80 ounces if usable herb on hand at one time. Seeking to avoid dispensary models like the social cafes out West that sell cannabis products from easily accessible retail storefronts, Vermont deemed access to dispensaries would be by appointment only, and the medicine may not be consumed on the premises. Patients who choose to designate a dispensary as their provider give up their right to cultivate at home. The law also allows municipalities to use zoning restrictions and other ordinances to prevent dispensaries from locating in their area. Vermont is the first state in the country to place their cannabis patient registry and dispensary rules and over-

sight in the hands of a law enforcement agency. The Division of Criminal Justice Services, the civilian arm of the Vermont Department of Public Safety, will be writing the rules and regulations for the dispensary system. Director Francis Aumand III said that “as the law is written now, no marijuana will be dispensed until [July] 2014. As part of the process, his department was sending out mandatory questionnaires to each of the 355 or so patients on the state medical marijuana registry. Expected to go out in September, the survey includes questions such as; What medical conditions and/or symptoms do you use marijuana to control? Do you know what strains of marijuana you use, and if so, which ones are most effective? and How much would you be willing to pay for an ounce? Mr. Aumand said their aim was to “de-

velop regulations that don’t make it easy for the diversion of marijuana, while at the same time don’t overburden the dispensaries from a business perspective.” He said the state will review dispensary applications with an eye on the financial and criminal backgrounds of the applicants, the soundness of the business plan, the recordkeeping systems, and security plans. While Vermont enjoys a reputation for being green and relaxed, casual tokers should be aware that ‘recreational’ possession of less than two ounces of marijuana is punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $500. First time offenders are eligible for deferral of their sentence, but second-time offenders can be sentenced to two years in jail and a fine of up to $2000.

amazing enough, let me tell you how good hemp seed oil is for you. Hemp seeds are high in protein, high in fiber and high in key minerals like iron and zinc, but they will not get you high. You can not fail a drug test by eating hemp foods. Hemp is chock full of omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids & essential amino acids. So instead of eating salmon, eat hemp to get your essential fatty acids. There are no known allergies to hemp foods. This is amazing considering how many people have peanut allergies or are lactose intolerant. Hemp is also gluten free and cholesterol free, making it a true superfood. There are all sorts of great tasting hemp foods on the market: hemp milk, hemp protein powder, hemp ice cream, hemp nut butter, hemp flour, protein snack bars, shelled hemp seed and good old hemp seed oil which is great straight or in salad dressings. You can buy hemp foods at your local health food stores, at Whole Foods Markets and at many supermarkets. If your store doesn’t stock hemp foods, let your shopkeeper know how healthy hemp is and ask them to order some. You can also visit any number of websites to buy high quality hemp foods online. Hemp seed oil is also very good for your skin. The essential fatty acids in hemp seed oil help your skin retain moisture. A veritable raft of body care products are made out of hemp seed oil including soaps, shampoos, lotions, lip balm and healing salves. I’m sure many of you have used Dr. Bronner’s soap over the years. They use hemp seed oil in their products and are big supporters of the hemp industry. So, when you buy Dr. Bronner’s, you’re helping yourself, you’re helping the hemp industry and you’re helping the environment. Speaking of being green, hemp is very environmentally friendly: it grows fast and blocks out competing weeds so farmers don’t need poisonous herbicides. You can make biodegradable plastics out of hemp and hemp is an excellent source of tree free paper. Automakers are using hemp fiber in some of their car parts because it has very high tensile strength and is biodegradable. These are just some of the uses of industrial hemp. More products are being developed all the time. For example, hemp fabrics used to be all itchy and scratchy but a new process has been developed that creates a beautifully soft
and strong material. The hemp industry is being established from the ground up and we need help developing, producing and selling new products. You can also help by buying hemp products. Unfortunately all hemp products sold in America have to be imported so they are more expensive than they should be. The potential for job creation is enormous but we need to grow hemp in America! So, if cannabis is such a great medicine and hemp makes so many earth friendly and healthy products, why is it illegal? Well, in its infinite wisdom, the United States government passed the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 effectively making cannabis illegal and killing the hemp industry. More than 700,000 Americans are arrested every year merely for possessing marijuana! This creates a huge prison/industrial complex: police, judges, prison guards, parole officers and the entire drug testing industry owe a large part of their existence to marijuana prohibition. This is a powerful lobby that has a vested interest in keeping prohibition on the books. Because cannabis is a plant, it can’t be patented. This makes it much harder for drug companies to profit from it so they are not pushing for its legalization. And, for more than 70 years, our government’s reefer madness campaign has brainwashed many people into believing that cannabis hemp has no redeeming value, although this is obviously not true. The evils of prohibition are many: Marijuana prohibition disproportionately targets minorities and the poor. In New York City, African Americans and Hispanics make up 50% of the population, but account for 90% of the marijuana arrests! This is destroying the fabric of society by creating fatherless children and broken homes. Gang violence is directly related to cannabis prohibition. Think back to alcohol prohibition, Al Capone and the Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre. Disputes were handled with guns, not lawsuits. Alcohol prohibition did not work and cannabis prohibition will not work. Cannabis prohibition forces patients to go to the black market or do without. There is no quality control for mold which is important for people with impaired immune systems. There is also a significant loss of tax revenue from the sale of cannabis and hemp products. All is not lost though. We are nearing the tipping point. The house of cards that prohibition is built on is about to
fall. The Veteran’s Administration announced that it would allow veterans to use cannabis in VA hospitals in states that have medical marijuana laws. So, if you care about our veterans, and I know you do, you’ll work to pass a medical marijuana law in your state. This is critical considering how useful cannabis is in treating post traumatic stress disorder. In some instances, the Obama administration is respecting states rights and not interfering with state sanctioned medical marijuana programs, although they need to do much much more. Cannabis can be grown for a fraction of the black market price of four to five hundred dollars an ounce. This is even more relevant when you consider how expensive modern pharmaceuticals are. How many medicines can you grow in your backyard? American farmers are looking north as Canadian farmers profit from growing hemp. Our farmers want to know why they can’t grow hemp. And quite frankly, we have to stop arresting adults just because they want to smoke some marijuana to relax after work. It will be hard to reverse the effects of 70+ years of reefer madness. There is still a tremendously negative stigma attached to marijuana use. People can’t come out of the “cannabis closet” for fear that they will get fired or lose custody of their children. That’s why we need laws that respect individual rights. Tell your state and federal representatives to legalize medical marijuana, to give farmers the freedom to grow hemp and to respect the rights of responsible adults and stop arresting them. Support organizations like NORML and Vote Hemp. This is not a “liberal” or “conservative” issue. This is a human rights issue. Our government’s refusal to allow American farmers the freedom to grow hemp and their refusal to allow sick and dying people access to medical marijuana is cruel and unusual punishment of staggering proportions. The thousands killed in drug war violence leaves blood on the hands of our elected officials and the millions arrested makes a sham of America’s so called system of justice. We want the freedom to grow hemp, we want free access to our medicine and we want our families back together. So the next time someone asks you why society seems like it is going to hell in a hand-basket, simply respond: It’s the (Cannabis) prohibition, stupid!

The Vortex gravity water pipe is one of the best water pipes I have ever used. It is easy and since it’s fun, this thing puts you in a good mood even before you get medicated. This pipe delivers a crisp clean hit every time. Nice and smooth and tasty. The Vortex is a great conversation piece that will amaze anyone who hasn’t seen one in action. When your friends see it they’ll want to pack it and try it themselves. So with this cool device you gain friends and bud! The Vortex gets a rating of 9. It is a must-have for everyone’s water pipe collection.

Pests are a pain, but Liquid Lady Bug, a new product I just received from my local grow shop, Organically Grown (see ad page 30) , has worked wonders! I can spray it on my clones or any stage of life right up to harvest time. My plants are clean, healthy, and mite free!!
At home I use an array of water pipes with high-quality medicine. I have been using the I-tal Hemp Wick for quite a few months and have noticed that I’m getting a clean burn from the “Wick” because it’s made with two natural ingredients; hemp and beeswax. These wicks eliminate the butane taste that would normally be there. I-tal Hemp Wick comes in a variety of sizes, from a few loops to a whole ball for patients who require more medication than others. They also have a wrap for you lighter, which will last a lot longer if you’re using these wicks. It’s a much healthier alternative to butane, but a word of caution; make sure you snuff out the wick fully before setting aside! Please try these hemp wicks with all your glassware. I think you’l enjoy the product as much as I do.
I’ve been using the breathe-ezi water pipe filter for over a month now. I have noticed a definite difference in my lungs. I’m still getting my medicinal effects just with a little less harshness. I used mine with a double spider filtration water pipe I purchased from Smokeez in Providence (see ad on page 27) I would recommend the breathe-ezi filter to everyone. Particularly those with preexisting lung conditions.

Jan what are some of your canna secrets? I make something I call “prep bud”. This is clippings of cannabis that I place on a pan and put in the oven at a low temp around 325 degrees and I watch the oven. This is not something you want to walk away from. If you miss your window of prepping and your all your medicine will go up in smoke. In about 10 minutes you will just start to smell this bud this is precisely when you need to take it out of the oven. What you are doing it activating the resin and this “prep bud” mixed with whatever other seasonings you use can be used as you use any other spiced such as basil or cinnamon in all your cooking. With the benefits you want from your medicine.
Do you have any other tips for strengthening your canna cooking?
OPTIONAL*
I add cinnamon whenever possible to most of my canna creations. Cinnamon bark increases blood circulation by opening up you capillaries which helps deliver more oxygen to your cells. This also speeds up the delivery of you medicine.

Antioxidants are widely used as ingredients in dietary supplements and have been investigated for the prevention of diseases such as cancer, coronary heart disease, and even altitude sickness. Antioxidants may protect your cells against the effects of free radicals. Free radicals are molecules produced when your body breaks down food, or by environmental exposures to tobacco smoke and radiation. Free radicals can damage DNA causing mutations that can initiate malignant transformation of cells. Free radicals are also believed to be involved in the aging process. Some of the most effective antioxidants are vitamins and minerals that healthy people eat on a daily basis. Below are some examples of antioxidants that anyone can incorporate into their diet. Remember, always consult your doctor before starting an antioxidant regimen. Beta-carotene: Beta-carotene is a member of the carotenoids, which are highly pigmented (red, orange, yellow), fat-soluble compounds naturally present in many fruits, grains, oils, and vegetables (green plants, carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, spinach, apricots, and green peppers). Beta-carotene is the water-soluble precursor to Vitamin A. Vitamin A deficiency leads to abnormal bone development, disorders of the reproductive system, xerophthalmia (a drying condition of the cornea of the eye), and ultimately death. The best source of beta-carotene is the type naturally obtained from marine algae. Vitamin E: Most vitamin E is synthetic dl-alpha-tocopherol, this should be avoided. Instead, look for natural d-alpha-tocopherol. To ensure absorption, take vitamin E with your largest meal, because it requires
some fat to be absorbed. It should also be taken with Selenium (see below). Vitamin C: A very powerful antioxidant, this can be taken in slightly higher doses. Vitamin C works best when taken in moderate doses throughout the day to ensure the blood keeps up a steady level of it. Most vitamin C is ascorbic acid, this tastes sour, can upset your stomach, and damage the enamel of your teeth. Calcium ascorbate is a much more tolerable source of vitamin C, although being a bit more expensive, it will not upset your stomach or teeth. Selenium: A trace mineral, this antioxidant has significant anti-cancer effects. Selenium occurs naturally in soil, in ares that have higher levels of selenium in the soil, it gets into the crops and the people living around the area have lower cancer rates. Selenium can be toxic in high doses, so one must use caution. It is always recommended to consult a doctor before starting an antioxidant regimen. In addition to dietary supplements, here is list of the top 20 antioxidant rich foods: 1) Small red beans (dried). 2) Wild blueberries. 3) Red Kidney beans. 4) Pinto beans. 5) Blueberries (cultivated). 6) Cranberries. 7) Artichokes (cooked). 8) Blackberries. 9) Prunes. 10) Raspberries. 11) Strawberries. 12) Red Delicious apples. 13) Granny Smith apples. 14) Pecans. 15) Sweet cherries. 16) Black plums. 17) Russet potatoes (cooked). 18) Black beans (dried). 19) Plums. 20) Gala apples.

HEMPSTERS: PLANT THE SEED follows seven activists as they fight to legalize industrial hemp in the United States. The plant is used in over 30 countries and is widely known to have numerous environmental benefits, including: less reliance on oil, more efficient use of energy, forest conservation, soil redemption and landfill use reduction. Over 25,000 products can be manufactured using industrial hemp. This is not an alternative, but the solution! Featured in the film is award-winning actor and well-known hemp and environmental activist, Woody Harrelson, who challenged Kentucky State law when he planted four feral hemp seeds in 1996. His subsequent trial and acquittal brought the issue to the forefront of mainstream media more than ten years ago, but the fight continues on. Other activists featured are: Willie Nelson, Ralph Nader, Merle Haggard, Gatewood Galbraith, Stephan Jenkins and Julia Butterfly Hill. HEMPSTERS is a thought-provoking and compelling documentary that will not only encourage all of us to take action, but move us one step closer towards a more sustainable planet.

2012 Although we here at 1000 Watts are not about to tell you how to vote, we are also not afraid to speak up when we think it's important. With that in mind, we would like you consider supporting Ron Paul's bid for the Presidency. Congressman Paul is appealing for lots of reasons, but especially because of his unwavering and aggressive opposition to the terrible institution of cannabis prohibition. He strongly opposes federal raids on state-approved medical marijuana facilities, and has said for years that ending this war on citizens would cripple the black marketby "taking the criminals out of the business", and save enough Federal money to put a dent in our rising national debt. Congressman Paul estimates that since 1970 our government has spent over $500 Billion on the drug war! That's our money and our medicine, and no other candidate on either side side has our interests in mine the way Mr. Paul does. We are living in and through one of the most exciting yet precarious periods in the long history of cannabis prohibition. To date eighteen states have legalized medicinal use of the herb, and within two years there's a good chance they'll be ten more. But there are also powerful business, political and religious forces in this country that aim to keep Prohibition in place for many years to come. Many of us thought Obama would end this war and restore our right to choose, but he's been pretty much more of the same. Ron Paul would do more to restore our rights under the US Constitution, and bring runaway government spending under control than any candidate in the running. As my fellow cannabis patients in RI can attest, change can happen, but it takes the voice of the people (We the People!) and someone to lead the charge. Check out Ron Paul's message at his website (www.ronpaul.com), and if you see what we see in the man and his mission, then please support his candidacy in anyway you can.
