SOUTHERN TIER AIDS PROGRAM

01

From the Board President & Executive Director New York State, through organizations like the Southern Tier AIDS Program, is attempting and having success ending the AIDS epidemic. But what does that really mean? How do we measure success? To public health folks, it means that the number of people infected with HIV each year will be fewer than the number of people dying as a result of AIDS related illnesses in that same year. That magic number for those who are interested, is 750 annually. We are fortunate that we have amazing tools at our disposal to make this dream a reality. Testing can now detect HIV infections 18-45 days after exposure and only requires 10-20 minutes. HIV- persons can take a pill once daily that will prevent HIV infections even if they are exposed to the virus. HIV+ people who follow their physician’s treatment recommendations and have an undetectable viral load (low Jerry Halbert and John Barry

number of copies of HIV virus in their blood) cannot transmit HIV to others sexually. Effective treatment is creating a world where HIV is rapidly becoming a chronic manageable illness. One might begin to believe that we no longer need to be concerned about HIV/AIDS. If only it were that simple. The stigma attached to HIV is alive and well. HIV+ people still need organizations like STAP with expertise in HIV/AIDS. This became clear to us when we began working with HIV- people and were compelled to create the ‘doing business as’ entity of Southern Tier Care Coordination, because those living with other chronic diseases were concerned about working with a care manager from STAP. They did not want anyone to assume that they might be HIV+. The treatments for HIV and the technology to prevent infection are marvelous, but they are simply not available to everyone. HIV continues to exact a higher toll in communities of color and among women,

transgender people and those living in poverty. This disease continues to show us in stark relief the communities that we have left behind. When we reach “the end of AIDS,” it will be a great day, but make no mistake, there is still much work left to do. I will join you in celebrating the end of AIDS when everyone has equal access to treatment, prevention and their basic needs are met so that they can remain healthy living with HIV. Until that day, our mission and our work here at STAP is more crucial than ever. I am going to go back to work now— there is a lot to do.
