Firework Advice for Pet Owners

ireworks commonly cause stress and worry to pets, as well as to their owners trying to ensure the well being of them. So here’s our guide to help you and your furry friends prepare for firework festivities. • Your pet is likely to feel safer if you’re around so don’t leave them alone • It’s important to keep pets inside once the fireworks start, so plan ahead and make sure any exercise and toileting is out of the way in good time • Allow enough time for natural products available from your vets such as DAP sprays, diffusers and collars, or medicines, to take effect (you may need to plan for this weeks in advance) • Keep your garden gate and doors shut, and make sure your pet is microchipped and wearing their collar and tag just in case they bolt in fear and escape

• Don’t over fuss, this may indicate to them that there is indeed something to be frightened of • Some pets find the gentle pressure from specially designed products such as Thunder shirts, coats or jumpers has a calming effect • Close the curtains and turn up the TV or radio nice and loud • Make sure there’s a cosy place where your pet can hide and feel secure. Often dogs will appreciate a den created under the kitchen table, a blanket on the floor behind the sofa or if they were crate trained, their crate • Distract pets with their favourite game, toy or a treat just before and during fireworks • It’s important not to punish any signs of stress or fear and remember to stay calm yourself

Nissan Leaf Tekna Fully Electric Reviewed 14/09/14 A proper family car that’s fully electric and doesn’t drive like a milk float!!
The Nissan Leaf has really impressed me - it’s a proper family car with 5 decent seats, loads of leg room, and a really good boot. I would say it is as big (if not bigger) than a Golf or a Focus, and it drives great. You wouldn’t know it wasn’t a normal car so for anyone thinking of buying a run-around - I would strongly recommend doing a test drive. Despite the car’s space-age technology, the cabin doesn’t have a space-age look. All the controls are where you’d expect to find them and everything is clearly marked. The touch-screen sat-nav system incorporates many clever functions, such as local charging facilities, but it can be a little confusing to use. The driver’s seat is comfortable, although the lack of steering wheel reach adjustment can make it tricky to find the ideal driving position. It is packed with gadgets like Bluetooth, cruise control, all round parking camera, full leather & heated seats. There is also a really cool Leaf app which enables you to check your battery from your phone, charge it remotely, and even switch on the heater on a cold day to un-freeze the car before you come out to it!!

Taxi takeover as Skyline and MKFM raise funds for Leo’s Appeal SKYLINE Taxis and MKFM teamed up this week to raise funds for the children’s wards at Milton Keynes Hospital. This Tuesday September 3 and Wednesday September 4, customers who requested the “Superhero Cab” were greeted by Batman and Robin, ready to raise funds for the hospital’s children’s ward campaign, Leo’s Appeal.
Skyline’s Managing Director Gav Sokhi said: “It’s been a pleasure supporting Leo’s Appeal this summer and being able to help children in hospital. We’ve been overwhelmed by the support and generosity of our customers who helped us raise such a fantastic total.” MKFM Programme Director Chris Gregg added: “There was a great response from our listeners and on Facebook. We made lots of people smile and it was great to be able to help the children’s ward – it’s such a great cause to support.”
Joining the dynamic duo were mascots Leo the Lion from the hospital and Samantha the Panther from MKFM – who were broadcasting live updates from the taxi on both days. Instead of paying the driver, customers were asked to give their fares to the children’s ward appeal, with most customers adding a generous donation. A total of £350 was raised.
Head of fundraising Vanessa Holmes said: “We’re delighted to have two great Milton-Keynes based organisations working together to support us. This will make a wonderful difference to children at MK Hospital, by funding play equipment and helping us brighten up ward areas. Thank you to everyone involved.”

y the time you read this, those living in Scotland will have cast their ballot in one of the most historic votes in our lifetime; either to remain part of Great Britain or to take the path of independence. This will be one of the most significant chapters in the history of these isles and I sincerely hope we can celebrate a NO vote. I was born and raised just south of Glasgow, moving to England to study at University before taking my first job and making my home in Milton Keynes. I see myself as being British and, along with many others who have relatives on both sides of the border, I do not see the need for separation. The Scottish Nationalists have argued from positions of little substance over recent months, however, a YES vote would be an unnecessary gamble that could cost us all dearly. There is no going back if those in Scotland vote to take themselves out of the Union. I believe the Scottish Parliament should raise much of its own revenue, that England should have a clearer voice in Parliament, and that we should continue to progress local economic development powers; this should not distract us from securing our economic recovery and protecting

our country from external threats. As your MP, I will always act with a calm rationality on your behalf. Locally, fellow Milton Keynes MP Mark Lancaster and I held a successful business start-up event at the Network Rail building in CMK that attracted people from across Buckinghamshire. Fireworks Family Fun
T
he Milton Keynes Village bonfire and fireworks display takes place this year on Saturday November 1st, so put the date in your diary now!
For health and safety reasons please don’t bring any Sparklers but there will as usual be plenty of our popular Glowsticks available for youngsters on the evening, both at the Village Hall and The Pavilion. Car parking is very limited in the immediate vicinity so please walk in where possible and remember to park considerately if you do arrive by car. Willen Road will be closed to all traffic for safety reasons.
This annual event has always been a highlight for the local community, the number of people attending has grown significantly in the last few years, and it has become a real evening to remember for all the family.
As usual there is no entrance fee but we do ask that you give what you can when a collector’s bucket passes by, all the profits from the evening do go directly to our local Willen Hospice so please be generous.
Once again the display will be professionally fired by fireworks company Kimbolton, who were involved with both the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations and the Olympics in 2012, and will again feature a great music sound track to add to the whole experience. Refreshments and soft drinks will be available near the Village

everal years ago I travelled to the White Mountain region of the USA to experience the Fall firsthand. My husband still jokes that it’s the only time in my life I’ve been speechless!

The clear blue skies, golden sun and hyper-saturated colours of the foliage gave the impression that the whole New Hampshire landscape was on fire. The whole effect was unutterably beautiful. Back home I was a woman on a mission. I had to capture some of that beauty for my own plot. Through research I discovered that the quality of autumn colour in the New Hampshire region depends on two things: the combination of tree species and the climatic conditions.

The sugar maple, red oak, mespilus and viburnum are the trees responsible for the famous vivid red and purple hues of the Fall but their magic is dependant on warm sunny days followed by cool nights where the temperature doesn’t drop below 7-8°C. So now I had two problems. No way could I guarantee perfect weather conditions in England and then there was the small issue of space...the smallness of the space being the issue! I would not be able to shoehorn a Red Oak or a Sugar Maple into my suburban garden.

It tasted great at intu Milton Keynes!

hoppers were treated to delicious tasters from guest chefs and samples from local food producers this weekend at intu Milton Keynes’ first ever Great Taste food festival. The Shopping Centre hosted the food festival, which was completely free for visitors, over two days with demonstrations, local food producers and foodie fun for children. Celebrity chef, Mike Keen, played host at the live kitchen, presenting cooking demonstrations which filled the Centre with tantalising aromas. Guest chefs from wellknown local restaurants; Woburn Brasserie and Calcutta Brasserie, as well as newcomer B-town, took to the stage to demonstrate some of their mouth-watering dishes. Tasters of each dish were handed out to spectators; each one gratefully received and enjoyed by all. A selection of local food producers presented their goods which were very well received. The assortment of cupcakes, muffins
and cake-pops, scones with jam and clotted cream, and a vast array of condiments and jams, provided shoppers with new flavours and an impressive selection of goods to taste and purchase. Nik Sinclair of Sinclair Condiments Co. said: “This has been an amazing event for us; many more people are aware of us now and will have our condiments in their kitchen cupboard!” Children were invited to take part in Gulliver’s Cookery School throughout the two days; making their very own baked cheesy biscuit bites and rocky road cakes. Martin Hindson, General Manager at intu Milton Keynes, said: “This was our first food festival and we’re incredibly pleased with the quality and the presentation of all the stalls and all the chefs that took part. This was a great start to our autumn-winter line-up, which includes lots of exciting events.”
